Chapter 44

There were some moments in Anissa's life that seemed too surreal.

There was a time when once she almost lost her father to a heart attack but miraculously, he was saved and he lived. Then there was a time in which she was at her lowest and despite the circumstances, she came through.

These were the moments when she thought that the whole universe was against her. And she would feel so helpless and powerless.

These are the moments in which a person feels most human: vulnerable and weak. They feel as if everything is out of their control. And all a human ever wants is control.

You feel like you're just a tiny speck in the grand scheme of things.

Right now, it was no different.

No.

No.

NO! What is he doing here? He wasn't suppose to be here! She mentally screamed as her hazel eyes stared at him in utter shock and terror.

There he stood, his side facing her: his head low as if he was examining something in his hand. His dark hair was unkempt as if he had passed his fingers through it multiple times. His charcoal tailored suit was wrinkled.

She studied his stature: his back was straight, shoulders squared and his stance strong. His neck was slightly bowed down and Anissa's eyes followed down to see that he was looking at something. She couldn't look into his eyes but from the stone hard expression on his face, she could easily tell that he wasn't pleased.

Her fear kicked in: her hands started shaking and her heart accelerated. Adrenaline pulsed wildly through her veins and all she wanted was to run away and hide somewhere.

"W-what are y-you d-doing here?" She stuttered, she couldnt hold it in; the fear was just too intense. too overwhelming. All the memories of the pain that she had endured clouded her mind.

He didn't respond as his eyes stayed glued to object he was observing.

Anissa's legs wouldn't move. She didn't dare approach him but from the looks of it, she could easily tell what he was looking at.

It was a frame: it contained her graduation photo. Anissa was glowing that day, at her left was her father and at her right was her mother. With them stood Haris and Ramsha.

Why is he looking at that picture? She thought as shivers ran down her spine and cold sweat formed on her forehead.

So many questions were running through her mind.

How did he find out I ran away?

The tracker was suppose to be off for a while?

Wasn't he in that conference?

How did he know that I'll come here? So many thoughts and all having dreadful answers.

How ever he managed to outwit her was beyond her comprehension.

Shehryaar was supposed to be in a very important meeting with the Chinese Mafia. The environment of the meeting was such that all devices were shut off automatically as all signals were cut off. That's what Zameer told her. And that was what they both relied on: that was the main key towards success in this escape. Both Zameer and Anissa had faith that the tracker in Anissa would be temporarily shut down and she would have enough time to flee with her family until Shehryaar found her. Then how did he ever find her?

Her mind was beginning to cloud with fear: her mind ran over all the scenarios that could happen: all the scenarios that ventured around him hurting her in more ways then one.

How masterfully he had managed to control her using her fear.

And she had promised herself that she would never let him control her yet here she was, paralysed by the mere site of him.

No! This had to stop! I'm leaving him! I will not let him control me anymore. She yelled at herself and mustered every fibre in her being to draw out strength and courage.

She was broken and wounded but she hadn't lost herself in all the madness and the chaos.

This is my house and I will not let him have his way here. She breathed in deeply: a sudden calmness and sense of power rushed in her. Her pacing heart slowed down a bit and the wheels in her mind began to stir. She pushed back all the doubt and the fear.

My parents are fine. They're probably out. She thought to comfort herself. That thought was all she needed to build up her courage and put her wits to good use.

She was a strong woman and she wasn't about to let this cruel monstrous man intimidate her any longer.

"What are you doing here? You aren't supposed to be here." She said again but this time, it was in a strong tone.

He didn't say anything.

"I want you to leave." She stated bravely.

He was still silent, his expression impassive. She was growing frustrated now. And her mind was slowing descending into panic mode.

"SHEHRYAAR!" she screamed.

The corner of his lips curved up as he finally tore his eyes away from the picture he was holding and twisted his neck to faced her.

Her heart began to accelerate when she saw the look on his face: his handsome features completely still and blank, not bearing any signs of emotion. But that wasn't what scared her: when she gazed into his grey eyes, they were completely blank.

By now she was completely used to his cold expressionless look but there was something different about him right that was caused the blood in her veins to run cold.

Something sinister.

Something dangerous.

"I should be asking you the same thing." He finally spoke, his voice deep and dominant. His cold tone managed to sent shivers down her spine but she stood her ground. He turned so that his whole frame was facing her.

"Leave right now. You're not wanted here." She said stiffly.

He cocked his head to the side and studied her with narrow eyes.

"Didn't you hear me?" She seethed. She was growing restless and fearsome by the passage of seconds. "Leave right now. This is my house. You have no power here." She claimed.

Shehryaar burst into a fit of laughter as he threw his head back. His laugh was deep and throaty: if things had worked out between them then Anissa would've admired his laugh but right now, his humourless laugh only sent her mind into a panicked frenzy.

She looked down and her breath got caught in her throat when she saw his other hand gripping a black hand gun.

Shehryaar stopped laughing and faced her. "It's cute that you think you can actually order me around." He said.

"Get out right now or,"

"Or what? Anissa." He said. Anissa knew now that he was being dead serious.

No games, no stalling.

And then it clicked.

"M-my parents. Where a-are they?" She stammered, terror and dread gripping her hard. She could no longer fight her fear as thousands of possible outcomes flashed in her mind.

Shehryaar's jaw clenched, the muscles ticking in his mandible as his fingers tightened around the handle of the gun, so tight that his knuckles turned as white as sheets and the angry vein lines on his hand became prominent.

Anissa swallowed hard as she stiffled a whimper.

"You actually have the nerve to ask me that? I think you haven't yet realised the gravity of your situation." Shehryaar spoke coldly and threw the picture flame in the ground. Anissa flinched and gasped when she saw him put his foot on the frame, his eyes trained on her face as he took tentative steps towards her.

"And to think that you would disobey and disrespect me to this extent." He muttered. His aura dark: his whole demeanour radiating power and dominance as his strong muscular frame sauntered in her direction.Everything about him screamed danger and if Anissa knew any better, she would've run away by now but the whereabouts of her parents kept her rooted to her place.

Her situation was so mind boggling: she was afraid but she was angry as well. Why wouldn't she be? So she focused on her anger and said whatever was in her mind.

"Why wouldn't I?" She spat, clearly challenging him. "Do you have any idea what you've done to me? Treated me like an animal, you punished me for every little thing as if I wasn't human rather a rag doll. You pushed and shoved me around as if my feelings and rights didn't matter. You killed in front of me!" She was screaming now.

"You starved me to death. You enslaved me. You raped me again and again. You reduced me to nothing. You shattered my confidence and damaged my pride. You're inhuman. You're insane and I'd rather get a divorce from a psychopathic killer like you rather then spend the rest of my life in torture. I hate you and I'll never forgive you!" She shouted at the top of her lungs. She knew that her neighbours would hear everything by now but she didn't care.

She was past that phase now.

"Get out of my house and out of my life!" She screamed, her heart feeling light after getting everything out.

"You're evil. You're a monster!" And that was when she saw it: his blank eyes finally displayed emotions: a myriad of emotions as his face hardened further.

She looked at him closely.

He looked hurt? She couldn't tell. But he did look thoughtful as if his mind was somewhere else.

And that's what was happening in his mind.

It travelled back in time, a memory coming to glance from the deep corners of his brain. A memory of his youth.

'You're evil. Both of you. You're monsters.'

Her voice rang in his mind.

It was as if she had said those exact words to him at the exact moment of the present. He had to fight with himself to keep himself at bay. But he couldn't deny the pain of the words.

Anissa had also said them and those words made him recall all those memories which he never wanted to.

And his fury grew ten times more fierce.

His nostrils flared as he breathed in deeply.

"You seriously don't know what you've just done." He spoke through clenched teeth. "Then let me explain to you sweetheart of what you have just done." He said so calmly that Anissa's guard went up tenfold.

"What have I done?" she scoffed and let out a dry chorttle. She was feeling very brave; perhaps it had something to do with the fact that he was in her home, thus her territory. "What I have done is used my right as your spouse. I have every right to demand divorce and there is nothing you can do about it." She acclaimed confidently.

"Do you fucking realize what you've done?" He repeated, his tone calm and steady, his eyes giving nothing away as is he was in a drunken stupor. She couldn't understand why he kept repeating the same thing; it was almost as if he was in disbelief of what she did. and what about his behavior? The most she had expected was anger but he wasn't displaying any vestige of human emotions. Her mind was beginning to recall, she had seen him like this once before but those memories were hazy and she couldn't remember.

"I didn't do anything that wasn't in my capacity to not do. I have every right to leave you after what you have done to me." She was surprised that her voice came out strong. But as soon as those words came out of her mouth, she saw his eyes darken and shimmer with fury, his control finally snapped.

Before she could react, Shehryaar caught her throat and slammed her body against a wall and banged her head hard. She cried and began to see black spots. Shehryaar tightened his hold around her throat, cutting off her air supply and causing her to choke. Her eyes welled with tears as her hands clawed at his but he was unfazed.

"Do you have any motherfucking idea what you've done?" He yelled.

"You ran away. From me? Me? You're fucking husband?" He was practically screaming at her face, his expression finally giving into his emotions: his eyes darkened and seeing red as his grip around her throat increased.

Her lungs burned for air and her throat rubbed harshly causing it to go rough. Her knees gave in. Her hands fell to her side and her eyes began to roll back into her head.

Shehryaar immediately released her. Before she could fall, he caught her hair and yanked her back to her to her feet. She had barely caught her bearings when his hand came up and sharply slapped her across the face. She collided back to the back, her breath knocked out of her and she fell down.

Her head was swarming with dizziness, the veins in her skull throbbing badly. He sat in his toes and His hand came back to her throat. He jerked her head up so that her eyes were staring into his.

Her hazel eyes filled with tears and displayed her fear while his smokey grey ones displayed his dark fury.

"You've betrayed me Anissa. That's what you've fucking done." He hissed at her face, his fingers tightening around her throat.

"And what's even more funny, instead of running away to some other place, you come running here where you know I could easily find you." He chuckled darkly.

"For someone I've actually given credit for being smart, this was a pretty stupid move on your part." He stated mockingly.

Anissa's chin wobbled as his words registered in her mind. it took every bit of her self esteem to glared at him. "Why wouldn't I?" She croaked, her throat raw. "Why would I hide from you like a fugitive? I have every right to come back where I belong. And if I've betrayed you by doing so then so be it." She barely managed, pouring all her hatred and loathe for Shehryaar in her glare and her words.

She knew her stubbornness would get her in harms way and not only her but her family as well. But if she was going down, she would go down fighting. She wasn't worried about herself. And she wasn't worried about her family either. After all he had promised that he would never harm her family and he himself proudly claimed that he never broke his promises.

"It's this fucked up stubbornness and disobedience that gets you to suffer. You're being incredibly stupid and stubborn right now." He claimed as if he was disappointed in her. She didn't understand what he meant." He gritted."And now, you're gonna fucking pay." He sneered.

He saw her confusion in her light hazel eyes.

For a moment he didn't say anything as if contemplating his next words carefully.

"Do you remember, what we had a deal on? You would say good bye to your family forever and I in turn would not harm your family." He said. Anissa's eyes widened.

No no he wouldn't. He promised.

"N-no," she gasped, her shock evident on her face as all the color drained from her face and her body began to quiver badly.

"You wouldn't. Y-you promised." She choked.

Shehryaar laughed. "Promised? Ah yes that I did. But you do realise what you've done. You've just betrayed me and now you have the audacity to expect me to keep my promise to you?" He spat viciously.

"And now because of your stupidity and carelessness, I have to break my promise." He stated cruelly.

And she couldn't deny him: he was right. She was being stupid. But she couldn't blame herself, her mental well being was at stake. How could she possibly think clearly? All that mattered to her was getting home and getting a divorce.

But how could she have been so simple minded? How could she not have known that her husband was a manipulative psychotic killer. He was right. She was smart. Her mind could've come up with something more useful. She should've run away somewhere else. At least then the safety of her family wouldn't be risked.

But in her angered and emotional state, she completely underestimated him and forgot that he held the power: he held her in the palm of his hands because he may not kill her but he can easily kill her family to teach her a lesson.

And when she glanced into his soulless grey eyes, the darkened depths revealing nothing but vicious promises of pain and making her pay for her sins.

And to him, her betrayal was her biggest sin towards him. And apparently, she had betrayed him and wounded his pride. She shouldn't known better that this wouldn't have been so simple.

"P-please, d-don't hurt my family." She cried through his death grip, her tears rolling down her cheeks. "Pl-please," she begged.

His lips contorted into a cold cruel smile as his grey eyes shone with maliciousness. She seldom begged but when she did, it did great wonders to his ego and sadistic mind.

"Fucking worry about yourself, you're gonna need it." And with that, he harshly hit the handle of his gun on her temple. She fell to the ground, A small rivulet of blood trickling down her forehead as she lost consciousness, her eyes closing.
