29: The Impossible Task

The doorbell rang. It was only 7 am that Saturday morning when Sandra checked her table clock.

Sandra groaned and was forced to get up from the bed. Being nearest to the front door, it was louder on her side. Plus, P.O. was a deep sleeper. He could sleep through hurricanes.

Sandra wore a robe and tied the ribbon around her waist as she walked towards the door and opened it.

She was surprised to find Mateo standing outside.

"Good morning, Miss Rose," Mateo greeted her with a smile.

Sandra forced an awkward smile back. "What are you doing here?" she asked bluntly.

Mateo scratched his head at her tone, understanding her not-so-warm greeting early this morning. "I'm here to pick you up for your last initiation."

Sandra was taken aback. She didn't know and wasn't prepared. So, it will be today?

Mateo understood her reaction. "I know it's sudden. I came straight from the frat house. I didn't inform you ahead of time. It's just..." He scratched his head again. "Kidrey wants to do it this morning. ASAP."

Kidrey? Why isn't he the one picking her up?

Sandra was reminded of yesterday. She bit her lip. Kidrey must not have liked what he saw between her and P.O.

Sandra clicked her tongue. If Kidrey was really jealous of her kissing P.O., then it meant he was so into her now. She wanted to see how far her effect on the leader of Mad KingZ could go through.

'Was it because you wanted to see Kidrey jealous? Or do you want to prove to yourself that you're not falling for him?'  her subconscious taunted. 'Hy-po-crite.'

But Sandra was getting worried now. She should've done it after the last part of the initiation, not before, where Kidrey might take it out on her. She didn't expect him to be this jealous so soon about her.

But in this initiation...Kidrey wouldn't want her hurt, right? At least that's the impression he gave her back at the hot spring.

Sandra looked at Mateo. He didn't seem angry, which was kind of a relief. If anything, Mateo looked more carefree.

"I'll be downstairs once you're ready," Mateo said.

Sandra nodded and closed the door, walking back to her room to prepare.

Her heart beat fast, thinking about the sudden last part of the initiation. She didn't know what to expect.

Once ready, she went to find Mateo. She wordlessly got inside his car. It was a quiet ride, but at some point, she thought he looked anxious, glancing at his phone once in a while.

"Are you okay?" Sandra finally asked him.

Mateo glanced at her. "Yeah. Sorry. I just can't think of two numbers for The Dailies tomorrow. I'm thinking of betting a lot of money on that."

Sandra raised her eyebrows. Oh yeah, this was Mateo Perez, the gambler of the group.

"I can suggest numbers if you want," Sandra offered.

Mateo glanced at her again. "Really? Ok, tell me."

"Zero, twenty-one," Sandra suggested.

Mateo smiled. "021. Got it." He said, then sped his Porsche.

Sandra shrugged and watched the view outside the window instead.

What kind of individual initiation would she get? Another paddling? Sandra jolted at the imaginary pain. For whatever reason, she wouldn't take another paddling. No way. Mad KingZ could go to hell if they insisted.

Mateo took her to a busy road in Madtown City. They were on Road 21, the busiest street in the city.

Suddenly, Mateo stopped driving. He parked at the side of the road, climbed out, and opened the door for her.

"We're here," Mateo declared, suddenly looking serious.

Sandra stepped out of the car, sensing something unusual about the place.

Sandra noticed the red phone booth nearby.

Is this where she's going to have her last initiation? What was she going to do here? Where are the rest of Mad KingZ?

Sandra looked back at Mateo, but he went back inside his car. He rolled his window down and spoke to her.

"Miss Rose, you will receive a phone call from God from the booth over there." He pointed to the booth. "He will tell you the rest of your initiation." Mateo smiled a bit. "Good luck, black cat." And he sped away.

Sandra was confused by what Mateo said but went inside the phone booth anyway.

Once inside, the phone rang right away. She also noticed a piece of clothing folded properly near the phone. She examined it.

"Hello?" Sandra greeted upon picking up the phone.

"Miss Rose," Kidrey answered.

Sandra was taken aback by Kidrey's tone. He sounded so...distant.

Not the usual playful tone Kidrey used with her.

Sandra cleared her throat. "Y-Yes?" 'Damn.' Why was her voice shaking?

"We are at the other side of the road," Kidrey stated.

Sandra looked over the other side, and indeed, the rest of Mad KingZ was there. Some were sitting on the road railings or the benches or lawn chairs. But Kidrey was standing on one corner, leaning on a brick wall, a cell phone to his ear. Even from afar, Sandra knew Kidrey was looking at her.

"I am the one giving you The Impossible Task," Kidrey continued coldly. "If you pass, congratulations, you made it to Mad KingZ." Kidrey sounded sarcastic at the last part.

Sandra felt nervous. Even if she wanted it to be Kidrey before, she was still surprised and nervous to find out Kidrey would actually give her the task.

Would what he witnessed last night affect the flow of initiation today?

Was Kidrey really jealous?

Was God even capable of feeling that way?

Sandra swallowed the lump in her throat. She should've not provoked him last night, knowing he wouldn't like what he saw.

Instead of apologizing, Sandra simply stated, "Go ahead. Tell me my task."

Kidrey was quiet for a while. Sandra held the receiver tightly against her ear, waiting for him to speak.

Then, in a tone that sent chills down her spine, Kidrey commanded, "Using a blindfold, cross the street to reach me on the other side. If you make it alive, you pass The Selection." He ended the call.

Sandra was left dumbfounded. Hanging. What the?

Sandra looked at the busy street Kidrey tasked her to cross...with a blindfold.

Was Kidrey serious?

'Of course, he is serious,'  her subconscious mocked.

Sandra felt great disappointment toward Kidrey. She thought he wouldn't hurt her, but the task he wanted her to do would not only hurt her but might kill her.

...Their leader was scary...

She suddenly remembered her brother's entry.

From disappointment, Sandra's next emotion was anger.

Kidrey clearly wanted her to give up. He didn't want her to join his fraternity, so he gave her this impossible task, knowing she wouldn't do it.

Who would be fool enough to cross the street without a pedestrian crossing or a traffic light in the middle of the busiest street in Madtown City?

Sandra tightly held the piece of clothing that would be her blindfold. She stepped out of the booth and climbed the railing to get to the roadside.

Yes. She was the fool.

Sandra stood there, looking at Mad KingZ. Nomore of glaring at Kidrey.

Was God sentencing her to death?

So be it.

Sandra tied the blindfold around her eyes and began to step onto the road.

--

Ted and Jon stood up right away from sitting on the lawn chairs as soon as they saw Dar Rose stepping onto the road.

"What the hell?" Ted blurted out loud.

"Does she want to die?" Jon exclaimed.

Kidrey was quiet as he watched Dar Rose stepping onto the road. Cars were coming in and out from opposite directions. One car almost hit her but was able to brake right away. Honking sounds and curses from the drivers were everywhere. She caused sudden traffic.

Kidrey gritted his teeth. Like he expected, Dar Rose wouldn't easily back down. He had a bit of hope she would give up, but no. She was still as reckless and impulsive as before, and it was frustrating him.

Kidrey nodded in TOP's direction, and TOP nodded back as he walked away, talking to someone on the phone.

Soon, men in high-visibility clothing arrived and stopped the traffic, letting Dar Rose safely pass through.

They were TOP's men from the police department. Kidrey had asked TOP to dispatch them just in case. And as usual, he was right. They needed these men.

When Dar Rose almost reached them on the other side of the road, the men in orange-yellow vests left the traffic and the place.

Dar Rose harshly removed her blindfold and glared at Kidrey, who was already standing and waiting in front of her.

She had no idea what had happened. She just thought she would be hit by a car and die there instantly. She threw the blindfold at Kidrey.

"You passed," Mateo said from the corner, apalled.

Everyone felt the tension forming between Kidrey and Dar Rose.

"Welcome to Mad KingZ," Jon followed up, sweating a bit at the tension.

Kidrey was still quiet as he met Dar Rose's glares.

Dar Rose stepped forward and, out of nowhere, slapped Kidrey across the cheek.

Everyone was surprised. The Mad KingZ gasped.

No one...as in no one dared to do that to God.

Dar Rose was angry, and Kidrey's expression darkened instantly.

"Your Mad KingZ fraternity can go to hell," Dar Rose gritted, angrily. "It's easy for you to take away lives, you monster. Damn you all!" Dar Rose stepped back away from Kidrey.

As Dar Rose backed away, she declared something that surprised them even more.

"I am not joining Mad KingZ anymore. You all can go to hell." She began to run in the opposite direction, leaving Mad KingZ quiet and astounded.

"There she goes," Mateo said after a while, still amazed at the turn of events. "The first ever woman who tried to join Mad KingZ."

"And the first person ever to decline being a member after passing The Selection," Ted added.

Jon didn't know exactly what to feel. "Miss Rose is quite something, eh?"

Kidrey was still quiet as he watched Dar Rose leave.

TOP was watching Kidrey the entire time, observing his every reaction. Based on their leader's darkened expression and fisted hands, Miss Dar Rose had hooked their leader even more. The woman intrigued and excited Kidrey, and TOP knew it.

God wouldn't stop chasing her now.
