26: Who else will challenge them?
Kidrey helped Sandra get back to her cabin. It was almost sunrise when the two arrived in her room. Kidrey then gently put her to bed, holding her like she was a fragile human being.
Sandra sat on the edge of the bed, watching Kidrey take off her shoes.
"You don't have to do that, you know," Sandra whispered.
From looking down, Kidrey looked up to meet her eyes. "I know," he simply said.
After he was done, he sat on the edge of the bed too, looking straight at her.
Sandra cleared her throat, trying to avoid meeting Kidrey's intense gaze. "T-Thank you," she said.
Kidrey smiled a bit and leaned down to kiss her on the lips.
Sandra closed her eyes at the contact. She was not surprised by the act anymore. She had a feeling she should get used to this by now. She and Kidrey will be kissing a lot.
Kidrey broke the kiss and then stood up. Sandra opened her eyes and watched him walk to the window door, ready to leave.
Before leaving completely, he looked over his shoulder at Sandra, a small grin on his face. "See you later, darling," he teased.
Sandra's cheeks warmed at the endearment.
Kidrey then silently closed the door behind him.
Sandra was left alone, feeling like her heart would burst anytime soon.
"Kidrey," Sandra whispered in the air.
Kidrey truly knew how to make her heart swoon.
Sandra tried to sleep that night, even if the thought seemed impossible. She reminded herself that she needed rest if she wanted to pass The Impossible Task later today.
Sandra needed to win. "I have to win. I have to get inside Mad KingZ," she told herself over and over again until she finally fell asleep.
It was almost noontime when Sandra woke up. She groaned, feeling the tenderness in her body with every slight movement. Her body felt like she had run the Boston Marathon. She was in pain all over, especially on the right side of her leg where TOP and Ted had hit her hard.
Sandra groaned again. If she hadn't gone to the hot spring with Kidrey last night, she would probably feel a lot worse today.
Sandra sighed at the memory. Kidrey...
Everything was changing now. Kidrey was a major part of her plans. He was entangled in something he was not even aware of.
But something had been bothering Sandra for a while. She bit her lips. She should not feel guilty about using Kidrey.
Sandra should remember that what she was dealing with in the initiations now was the same thing her brother had dealt with last school year. Or far worse, as he had decided to end his life in the middle of it.
Sandra's heart tightened at this thought again.
She needed to be strong and remind herself over and over again of the reason she was starting this Selection Day and attending Madtown U in the first place.
Kidrey was just a pawn in the game she was playing. And she should emerge as the victor at the end, no matter what it cost.

"Good morning."
Sandra just nodded to one of the remaining applicants who greeted her.
"Good morning, Dar Rose." Another applicant greeted her, and she only nodded in response again.
They were all in the breakfast room in the cabin, where a scrumptious feast was laid out on the table. Sandra felt hungry just looking at it.
'How considerate of the kings to serve us food fit for a feast after beating us badly last night,' she thought sarcastically.
Sandra particularly wanted some croissants and coffee from the table.
She sat down on one of the chairs and started to dig into the food.
She failed to notice the fruit basket placed in the center of the table with an envelope addressed to her.
"Did you sleep well?" one of the applicants asked her.
Sandra stopped chewing and looked at them. What's with them being chatty with her now? She thought they didn't like her. Plus, they were still in a competition. She thought they might treat her as a threat for still being in The Selection.
One of the applicants scratched his head at her silence.
"Look, Dar. We're sorry we were jerks to you back at the van," he said, sounding apologetic.
Sandra shrugged her shoulders and resumed eating. "It doesn't matter," she said after swallowing her food.
The guy smiled a bit, looking relieved. "Yeah. We're almost at the end of this, anyway." He glanced at the basket on the table, noticing she hadn't touched it. "Uh... I think you should open the envelope from the fruit basket. It's for you," he stated while pointing at it. "Each applicant got one, and I think you should read its content."
Sandra stopped eating and looked at what he pointed out. She finally noticed the fruit basket and reached for it. Indeed, there was a red envelope attached to it.
'For Ms. Dar Rose,' the back of the envelope said.
Sandra opened the envelope and pulled out the letter inside. She began to read it.
Dear Miss Rose,
Congratulations on making it to the last part of The Selection. Unfortunately, we cannot go through with the last step today due to emergency reasons. Instead, one of the official members will contact you shortly about the final process. Good luck.
- MAD KINGZ
Sandra closed the letter and looked at the other applicants. They were already looking at her, seemingly having received the same type of letter.
"We are not doing the last initiation today then?" she finally asked, confirming.
One of the applicants nodded while sighing. "Yup. Seems like it."
Another applicant added, "It's good they postponed it. I still feel terrible from what we faced last night. I need more time to heal."
They all agreed. They needed to rest.
"Do you know what's the emergency, though?" Sandra asked again.
They shrugged their shoulders.
"Not sure about the whole thing," one of the guys answered. He had visible bandages on his body. "But this morning, I overheard them talking about Mad KingZ frat house being trashed last night while everyone was out."
Sandra looked at him in surprise. Mad KingZ fraternity house had been trashed?
"By whom?" Sandra asked.
The guy shrugged his bandaged shoulders but quickly groaned in pain afterward. He massaged them instead. "I don't know. They left quickly after that. Seemed urgent."
Sandra fell silent, lost in thought. If this was true, then Mad KingZ had other enemies too. She grabbed another croissant while thinking about who it could be.
"Must be from the rival gang..."
A theory from one of the applicants.
"Who knows? They make a lot of enemies."
"We don't know, so let's just eat the food, go home, and wait for them to contact us again..."
Sandra looked at the applicants again, curious about something.
"Why do you guys want to join the Mad KingZ frat?" she asked, changing the topic.
One guy quickly answered while grinning, "It seems cool to be part of their group."
Sandra looked at him like he had grown two heads. To look cool, he was willing to take the paddling. 'Nuts,' she thought.
"I want a good life after college. I'm just an ordinary person, but the Mad KingZ can make me influential like them," another guy answered, smiling at himself.
"My mother wants me to be in a fraternity. Any fraternity. But Mad KingZ is the coolest at Madtown U, so I picked it," the last guy said, shrugging his shoulders.
Sandra fell quiet at their answers. How about her brother? What was his reason for joining the fraternity? Was it because of money, reputation, or ambition? It could be anything.
Sandra then unknowingly crushed the croissant in her hand at this thought. Whatever her brother's reason was, it was no use now. It was too late. She could never find it out. Joining Mad KingZ had ended his life.
"How about you?"
Sandra looked up to see three pairs of eyes watching her. "What?" she asked.
"What's your reason for joining the fraternity?"
Sandra didn't answer right away. She slowly wiped her hands with the napkin. Then she looked up and stared at them. "It's my goal to join Mad KingZ this year," she answered in a low voice.
The answer was enough to make them believe her.
Sandra then got quiet. The answer was not the entire truth. Get into Mad KingZ and break them from the inside. That's the goal she was talking about.
Sandra stood up, ready to leave. The Selection Day was done for now, so she could go home.
The guys were still talking in the breakfast room, exchanging theories about the reason for the postponement.
"It must be due to the rival gang's doing..."
"Maybe...who else would dare to challenge Mad KingZ?..."
'Me,' Sandra silently answered as she stood in the doorway, ready to go home.
---
The Mad KingZ members looked displeased as they surveyed the current state of their fraternity house. It was a wreck.
The windows were shattered into tiny pieces on the ground. The entire garden was destroyed, flowers randomly pulled from the ground. The angel on the water fountain had lost one of its wings. The pool was dyed red. Everything was a mess.
But amidst all that, what they noticed most was the missing Mad KingZ flag from the flagpole. Somebody had taken it.
"Those bastards," Mateo gritted in anger, clenching his fists.
Jon sighed. "What a big mess they left."
"Cowards. They attacked when we weren't here," Ted added, feeling insulted.
TOP puffed his cigarette as he looked at the quiet Kidrey observing the damage. "What now, God?" he asked, curious about his next step.
Kidrey wandered his eyes over the mess their rival gang had left. His eyes were cold.
And if anyone looked at him right now, they would get chills from the promise of revenge in his eyes. They had angered him.
"We'll retaliate," Kidrey declared after a while. "CODE will go to hell," he continued, dangerously.
