Chapter 42
Dauntless Assassin's POV
I watched as Stormy and her..cousin? Or was it brother?
I honestly can not keep up these days.
The look of joy on Four's face honestly sickened me.
However, I think I'm gonna play the nice card and let Stormy enjoy these next months. I am, the whole brain of this operation.
Enjoy your this while it lasts, Stormy.
Stormy's POV
Bang! Bang!
Our brotherly and sisterly embrace soon came to an end once the ringing sound of bullets filled our ears. I spun around to see one of the guards that where shot aiming a guns towards the ceiling.
Bits and pieces of the wall started to crumble and plummet towards the ground.
"Run!" Luke shouts.
The three of us (Tobias now had Tris in his arms) bolted to one of the exits.
As I was panting like a maniac, questions of wether this was reality ever so slowly crept into my mind.
If this wasn't reality, why bother trying anything?
After endless twists and turns my legs started to ache and feel like jelly.
We finally came to a stop, our breaths where ragged and short.
"A-are you-u alright?" I managed to sputter out. Tris slowly looked over at me. Her eyes widened and she jumped on me, engulfing me in a hug.
"I miss you so much," She says with her voice cracking. I slightly flinched at her touch because few nightmares I have had where Tris blamed me for her fellow initiates and Sam's death.
She let go, finally giving me circulation in my body. That however was soon cut off when Luke engulfed me in an embrace.
"Hi Lukey," I croaked. He gave me a weak smile and embraced me in a hug. However, he did not say anything. I took note of his sudden..oddness. My smile faltered slightly as my brows furrowed in confusion.
"I'll tell you when we get to Dauntless," He mutters.
"If we get to Dauntless that is." Tobias interjects.
"If you haven't noticed, we're trapped in a corner. Any moment from now, guards will find us."
I instantly felt nauseous just at the mere thought going back to Jason
I desperately looked around for an entrance. The window was an option, but then again was that such a great idea?
"The shoot..." Tris says while trailing off. I glanced at the area behind her slightly disgusted.
I strode towards it and opened the door that lead to the garbage slide.
"It could fit all of us..." I said warily.
The three of them finally came to a conclusion that we where going to slide through while I reluctantly agreed.
Tobias and Tris just went through the shoot, leaving Luke and I alone.
"Ladies first." I said with a smirk while extending my arms.
"Yup, she hasn't changed." Luke confirms while shaking his head. With one swift motion, he swung his legs in the shoot and slid down.
I scrunched up my nose and swung one leg into the shoot.
"Stop!!"
My head snapped ahead where a tiny figure emerged through the shadows. I didn't move for one reason and that was because I saw that it was a little girl.
This was the same girl that I've seen attached to Tony's hip. Holly was her name. So sweet and innocent unlike her family. Her dirty blonde hair bounced up and down as she ran towards me. By now, both of my legs are half way down the shoot and I struggled to hang on. The only purpose for this was the distress look on the little girls face. I guess that was the Abnegation side of me.
A small plastic bag containing multiple items swished back and forth against her mini hands.
"This is for you," she told me quietly while shoving the bag in my hand. I looked at her confused.
"Who gave this to you sweetie?" I asked.
She placed a finger over her lips.
"I was told not to tell." She then started to giggle.
Pervious paranoia started to inch its way through my system. My fingers slipped from the wall I was holding onto. I then plummeted towards the ground where freedom would now be at my fingertips.
With a massive thump, we landed on the ground. Surprisingly the garbage shoot led to a garage that was likely left opened. How did I not see this before?
There near the opened of the garage was an Amity truck waiting for us to get it. Almost instantly at the sight, I leapt inside waiting for the others.
Two rows of two chairs where I front; I chose the one in the back and scooted over for Luke.
A giddy feeling now replaced my paranoia. I was now free.
That was when I suddenly remembered.
"Where's Lilly and Eric?" I asked wordily.
"They took a different exit," Luke reassures me although I could sense the hesitation his his voice.
I sighed and leans against the rough seat of the truck. Thoughts and events of this year overflowed my mind. It wasn't the best year; but it was something.
My head faced towards the widow. I watched in admiration the scenery Amity fields have to offer. I had missed this. The felling of being free felt so foreign. I smiled as I watched the small Amity children running beside the truck and waving. A small laugh erupts from the pits of my throat as I waved back.
'A dauntless lady waved at us!' was one of the few things I'd caught them yelling to one another.Abruptly, the truck comes to a halt making Luke and I almost fly foreword. We send eachother confused looks before looking over to Four and Tris.
"What happened?" Luke hollers over to Four.
"The truck ran out of stupid gas!" He yells back. I chuckled at his annoyed tone.
I nudged Luke and gestured over towards the kids who near the truck. "Let's go say hi..or hey"
Luke looked reluctant, but he eventually gave into the puppy dog look I was giving him.
We jumped out of the truck and landed into the waist high grass.
A slight breeze picked up, sending my hair to move sync with it.
"Hey!" Luke shouts over to the kids who where now trying to get a glimps of the inside of the truck.
Their age groups seemed to be around 12 to 15along with two others who poked around 7 or 8; They got startled by Luke's voice and a kid who had another kid balanced on his shoulder dropped her. They all looked petrified knowing that they've got caught.
"Don't worry, your not in trouble," I reassured them. Visibly they relaxed at my words.
"So," Luke began. "What're little Amity like y'all doing on this side of the grass. Awfully close to the fence, don't you think?"
I could already see the plan forming in Luke's mind; he was trying to scare them.
The two little ones started to whimper quietly. A girl who looked around 14 nudged the whimpering girl while another boy smacked the whimper boy upside the head.
'Don't show weakness' the boy hissed at the two. Assuming he wasn't heard, he then acted as though nothing happened.
"Don't show weakness?" I ask in a mocking tone.
"What're we? Dogs who engulf the feeling of fear?" I feigned hurt.
'Dang, do they have super hearing?" A girl who looked about 13 asked another who looked 15.
"Maybe," Lule says wile smirking towards he girl who asked the question to her friend.
"Cool!" The little boy exclaims, causing me to chuckle. Instantly, the words that escaped from his mouth fully registered through his brain as he cover his mouth with his chubby little hands.
He mumbled something along the lines of 'sorry' which adorably turned out as 'sowy'
After all the shyness had left the kids, they asked us about life in dauntless and if we wanted to pick some fruit with them (which we politely declined).
As they continued to chat with us, Luke and I both shared a look; these kids where planning on transferring.
Out of all three girls that where present in the group, one caught my eye. I just couldn't figure out what..but this girl looked oddly familiar.
She then came up to me with a hand extended.
"Hey, I'm Ivy. Ivy Azalea."
Azalea
My jaw literally plummeted towards the ground.
This was Willow's younger sister. The one she would always talk about during our initiation.
"My sister transfered to Dauntless a couple years back," she continues. "Do you possibly know her?"
I touched her shoulder and kept my face void of emotion.
"I'm sorry, kid." I say. The confusion in her eyes was instantly replaced with panic. Before she could say anything, I beat her right to it.
"Shes' dead."
A tear painfully pricked behind my eye. Just like Willow would do; Ivy's face was clear of any emotion.
"Did you know her?" She asked just barely above a whisper. I nodded in reply.
"She was in my initiation. Ranked second and even though I didn't know her for that long, she was my friend and one of the best warriors I knew."
Ivy's bottom lip trembled.
I didn't dare say 'Sorry' since It was an overused phrase that was usually non-sincere nor did I say 'Stay Strong' for that was complete BS.
A small tug was suddenly felt around my wrist. I turned to see Luke gesturing towards the truck. I then realized that Four had fixed whatever problem it had.
"I must be going," I tell her quietly. She nods solemnly. Just as I walked towards the truck, I felt a hand grab my shoulder. Quietly I winced fore that was the shoulder that was frequently pricked with needles and shot.
Ivy remained solemn as she spoke her words.
"Whoever did that to her; kick their @$$."
I chuckled at her request and nodded.
"Don't worry Hun, that was already done."
She smiled gratefully in which I gladly returned.
Soon, we departed the fields of Amity. Luke was now driving and I sat in the front with him while Four and Tris both slept in the back.
"I never got to say this," I began. " but thank you."
Luke tore his eyes away from the road and glanced at me with a confused expression.
"Don't look at me as like you don't have any idea what I'm talking about." I add while pointing an accusing finger at him. He chuckled and shook his head.
"Storm," he began. "I've known you since we where in diapers. We where inseparable. You where there for me and vice versa. Also, your like Dauntless's favorite person because; a) your the more calm and understanding leader, not to mention selfless. Then b) your the only person who could calmed down Mr. Ruthless."
"Your a Dauntless hero, Stormy." He finishes.
I scoff at his ending. How was I possibly a hero. I was weakly held in another faction for a whole year while being tortured and abused. If that's heroism then I would really like to know what villainy is.
"Wait. You don't know do you?" He asked. I shook my head as I patiently waited for him to elaborate.
"Because of you Stormy, the Materiel Code is broken. It's being rumored to be made illegal now. Not only that, Dauntless has been chaos since you where gone."
I stiffened and looked at him wordily.
"In what way?"
He stopped the truck and turns his whole body so he could face me.
"Eric had been slowly relapsing to his old self. Not only that, more and more people are being sensed as Divergent. You know how it works, they've been treated like scum while you where there. And now-" He takes a big gulp and glanced at Four and Tris.
"They're being hunted down. Murdered."
My blood ran cold at his words.
"W-who's doing-" I was cut off by a hand that suddenly griped my arm.
"It's Eric, Stormy." Four says in a dark tone. "Your beloved fiancé"
~ Time Lapse ~
All the jokes and general happiness have now became a mere memory. Now, we where in a semi lighted warehouse.
Our presence wasn't announced, until Four suddenly cleared his throat.
All eyes where now one me.
"She's Back!" The joyous sound of Michael's voice rings through the room.
As I continued to look around, my vision was suddenly blocked and replaced with the view of messy turquoise hair.
"Hi, Mikey." I chocked out from his grasp.
Everything then felt odd, as though our little meeting was being watched; I ignored it however.
"C'mon, Storm." Four says softly. I nodded and released Michael, who sill wore a goofy grin.
We walked through the arrays of weapons and computers.
I Guess it really did take a genius to figure this all out.
What I really noticed of this whole group was that everyone had stopped what they where doing.
They where murmuring amongst each other things such as 'So that's her' and 'omg look'.
The unfamiliar faces took in my appearance as though I was their prey.
"Why are they looking at me like that?" I murmured to Tris who was right next to me.
Her pace slowed suddenly down along with mine.
"Are you serious?" Her voice was filled with amazement and slight confusion. I nodded; I honestly believe that I've done more things to destroy Dauntless than help it.
"Stormy," she stuttered a bit as she looked for words. "Your the Dauntless Superwoman! Have you not realized all the things that you've done without realizing? Your one of the most selfless Dauntless-borns, you're one of the biggest a inspirations to Dauntless children! You've broken and almost banned a horrific law that is still used today."
I nodded without saying anything. I almost laughed at her words. I was a weak dauntless who had suicidal tendencies and just happens to become a magnet for becoming everyone's burden.
It was a emotion that was buried deep inside of me. Sometimes, when I'm around my friends, my mind wanders away from it. All was a blissful state. Then, everyone would leave, the feeling would return and arise from its grave.
I looked around at the people who had done all these things just for me.
A bile taste formed in my mouth at the thought of someone dying for me. The thought was extreme, yet it was possible.
I hated this ungratefulness that was inside of me. I didn't want anyone to risk anything for me. Fore I have been reminded many times that I was nothing special or a work of art; just a plain canvas.
Fighter? Selfless? Strong, Independent?
These words some people would use to describe me. I, also, have a few of my own;
Weak. Venerable. Soft. Selfish. Needy. Annoying. Burden.
My mods instantly darkened obviously from my thoughts, but something about this atmosphere just gave it a boost.
Luke and Four, who I have now realized where away for a while, scurry back and forth from two spree are tables.
While leaving Tris, I walked over to the one that was nearest to me. My fingers grazed upon the mahogany wood and papers theater where scattered on the tables surface.
"Hmmm," I hummed as I started to read what was on the papers.
Suddenly, I noticed a paper had just been sent in from the small fax machine at the center of the table....
11:34 - n/a
11:35 - n/a
11:36 - n/a
11:36 - P > sq1 > sq2
11:37 - P > sq2 > sq3
11:38 - W missing
11:39 P > sq3 > sq4
11:40 - no report found
My brows furrow in confusion as I read this particular sheet of paper.
A gasp then emotes from my mouth as I saw that the very corner of the paper was signed.
Need help? -DA
My pulse quickness and my guts felt like they where being twisted in a knot. I glanced behind me to see if anyone was watching before ripping the side of paper that was signed and stashing it away in my pocket.
"Four" I beckoned got him to come closer. He strode a couple steps before standing right next to me. I mentally scowled while thinking; advantages for tall people. I shook the idea away before handing him the paper.
"This was just faxed in," I say while handing him the paper. My heart continue to hammer in my ears as the picture of the signature flashed multiply in my mind.
I watched him carefully as his eyes scanned every detail for the paper. I looked down at my hands which where slightly shaking; I stuffed them in my jean pockets to steady them.
Four suddenly curses causing me to jump and get startled.
"What? What does it mean?" It sickened me to hear actually vulnerability in my voice.
"We've been betrayed."
A/N Thoughts?
