Chapter 40
I ran
Simple as that
With every ounce of adrenaline I had in my body, my legs carried me to wherever they desired. My eyes stopped its frantic search for an escape and suddenly restated themselves upon a door that was fully opened. It was almost inviting. Instantly an idea formed through my mind.
The guard that was chasing me was hot on my trail.
Abruptly, I outstretched my hands and firmly placed them on the small molding that decorated the door. Not a second later, I brought my legs up high, causing the guard to loose his footing from all the running making him flail into the room right from under me.
I jumped down and quickly shut the door. Looks like the mouse trapped the cat. I glanced behind my shoulder just to make sure hat no one noticed a Dauntless woman leading a Erudite guard like a dog dragging its owner to where it pleases.
Quickly I placed a 'Do Not Disturb' over the knob.
"Where did she go?!"
My mental smirk was immediately washed off and replaced with panic. Without thinking, I sprinted towards a near by stair case. My hands griped tightly onto the railing for I was skeptical about the sturdiness of these stairs.
"Maybe we just imagined it," One scientist muttered.
I smiled triumphantly. I watched in amusement for these 'brilliant' scientist looked around dumbfounded.
What made me even more amused was that the scientist's eyes scanned over my uncomfortable statue like structure as though I was a mere piece of the wall.
My eyes trailed away from the retreating scientists and made their way to the stair wall which I was now straddling. I mentally scolded myself for not noticing the one flaw of my new location.
'Caution' tape was covering the bottom entrance of the stairway.
That's what felt odd, I thought.
Curiously eventually stabbed my back when I found myself slowly trailing up the staircase. Just as my right foot reached the top step, my foot lost its balance. I used one of my hands to cover my mouth so not even a peep could escape. My other hand frantically searched for something sturdy to grab a hold on. Luckily, I was successful.
As soon as my hand touches the object it felt like it was being pressed down. After managing to pull myself up I found what was holding me.
However, it wasn't it that held me, the question was who was holding me.
"C-Calum?" I sputter out.
His eyes widened. I saw something flash through his eyes, but I couldn't identify what it was.
It had been one year. One year since I've seen and embraced my 'brother'..yet I've seen him everyday in my nightmares.
"What are you doing here? Your not suppose to leave your quarters," he whispered harshly. I was taken aback before being hit with sudden confusion.
"You knew I was here?" I asked dumbfounded.
His facial expressions physically softened as he composed himself.
"I tried," Calum said in a much softer tone. "For the past year I've been searching everywhere for you..I-I" his voice started to crack. "I though you where dead."
I shook my head. Has anyone searched for me? Its been one whole year. Did everyone just easily give up or was I just thinking selfishly of myself?
"What're you doing here?" I asked him after a while. Instead of a typical Erudite attire he wore a black V-neck paired with blue denim jeans. He honestly looked Factionless for they always wore mixed colors. What really gave me great confusion was that an outline of a vest was clearly visible through his tight shirt. It was a bullet proof vest.
"I work here," He said with a monotone voice. He glanced behind me before returning his gaze onto me.
"I'm taking you back before Jason finds out." He said hurrily while pushing me away. I was skeptical about his motives.
His hand rested on the small of my back, as though if I escaped he could easily grab ahold of me.
Just as we walked I abruptly stopped as a familiar noise reached my ears.
A screech.
It wasn't just just any scream, it was oddly familiar.
~ Flashback ~
Eric and I walked hand-in-hand past the suspension bridge near the chasm. Just like always, we where rambling about our favorite books and starting small debates on the most random scenes from those books.
Just was we walked, a scream filled the hallways of the abandoned area.
Instantly I let go of Eric's hand and ran towards the echoing screech.
There she laid. Her arms where wrapped around her legs and she slowly rocks back and forth. Her breathing was ragged and her chest rapidly fell and then rose.
I crawled down to her sitting position and rested her head against my shoulder. My arms protectively wrapped around her frail body.
"It's okay, it'll be over soon," I cooed in her ear.
She was having an Panic/Anxiety attack.
After a while of the young girl sobbing in my arms. I pulled away and gave her a small smile. No, it wasn't of sympathy, it was a proud smile..She dealt with the situation far more better than I had expected her to.
"Thank you Stormy," She croaks out as u whipped the tears off of her face.
"No problem, Tris. No problem."
~EndOfSlightConfusion~
The screech sounded like..Tris's.
I mean, the serum Erudite had given me creates such spine chilling illusions.
This however felt, real.
Calum continues to push me until we've finally reached my quarters. Without speaking, he pushed me in.
He was definitely acting sketchy.
I was determined to find out what was up. Family or not, some betrayal will take place.
I just don't know who's.
