The Princess of Egypt
Men: [singing] Mud! Sand! Water! Straw! Faster! Mud, and lift! Sand, and pull! Water, and raise up! Straw!
Guard: Faster!
Men: [continues singing] With the sting of the whip, on my shoulder!
[he whip cracks the man]
Men: [singing] With the salt of my sweat on my brow! Elohim, God on high, can you hear your people cry? Help us now! This dark hour!Deliever us! Hear our call, deliver us! Lord of all remember us here in this burning sand! Deliver us, there's a land you promised us!Deliver us to the promised land!
[the guards run]
Christine: [singing] Yal-di ha-tov veh ha-rach,
al ti-ra veh al tif-cha-d. My daughter, I have nothing I can give. But this chance that you may live. I pray we'll meet again. If she will.
Deliver us!
Men: [singing] Deliver us, hear our prayer! Deliver us from despair these years of slavery! Grow too cruel to stand! Deliver us, there's a land you promised us! Deliver us out of bondage and deliver us to the promised land!
[they all walk to a river, then Young Ayano puts the basket down, then opening a top]
Christine: [singing] Hush now, my baby,
be still, love don't cry. Sleep as you're rocked by the stream. Sleep and remember my last lullaby. So I'll be with you when you dream. [kisses the baby, then closing the top, then she continues singing] River, oh, river, flow gently for me. Such precious cargo, you bear. Do you know somewhere she can live free? River, deliver her there. [she starts vocalizing, then looking at a basket in the river, then the monkeys look at a basket, by fish, birds, crocodile, hippos, with the basket flowing, then running while gasping, then the men carry a basket by fish, then the basket continues flowing, then running, then rowing by paddles with the basket, gasping, then the basket continues flowing, then the basket flows by geese, then picking a flower, then putting her down, then Young Ayano looks at Queen Belle opening a top, looking at Baby Maddie]
Young Ayano: [singing] Sister, you're safe now and safe may you stay, for I have a prayer just for you. Grow, baby sister, come back someday. Come and deliver us too.
[Queen Belle pets the baby]
Severus: Mommy!
Queen Belle: Come, Severus. We will show Pharaoh your new baby sister, Maddie.
Men: [singing] Deliver us send a shepherd to shepherd us and deliver us to the promised land! Deliver us to the promised land!
Christine: [singing] Deliver us!
[they both go chariot racing by opening a door]
Young Maddie: Ha, ha!
Severus: Faster, you beasts! You run like mules.
[they both continue racing]
Young Maddie: Hey, Severus, how'd you like your face carved on a wall?
Severus: Someday, yes.
Young Maddie: How about now? [pushes
Severus by screeching the wheel on the wall]
Severus: You almost killed me!
Young Maddie: Oh, come on. Where's your sense of fun?
Severus: Oh, it's fun you want? [pulls the horses back, then Maddie pulls the horses back, then Severus runs down by a hill] Ohh. Maddie?
[Maddie runs over Severus, then they both continue racing, then the table vibrates, then breaking a table, then racing down the stairs]
Severus: Come on, Maddie. Admit it. You've always looked up to me.
Maddie: Yes, but it's not much of a view. [laughing] Hyah! Whoo! [the piece lands on the horses, then pulling back]
Man: Hey!
Severus: Secondborn, second place!
Young Maddie: Not for long!
[they both continue racing, then racing up the stairs, then the wood floor begins falling down, then turning left, then breaking the wood, then the paint falls down, then the ladder falls down, then drawing a mustache at the bottom of the nose but above the mouth, then the wood breaks the nose by falling into the wood, then they run like a helter-skelter, then the nose falls closer to Maddie]
Young Maddie: Jump! [she jumps away from the wooden floor, breaking it completely, then they run on top, then they laughing, then they slide down by the men with Sean and Tony, knocking everybody over, then they slide down by sand like a wave of water, then they jump off]
Severus: You don't think we'll get in trouble for this, do you?
Young Maddie: No, not a chance.
Pharaoh Rumple I: [hold a striped gold and blue cane called a crook] Why do the gods torment me with such a reckless, destructive, blasphemous son and daughter?
Severus: Father, hear what I...
Pharaoh Rumple I: Be still! Pharaoh speaks. I seek to build an empire, and your only thought is to amuse yourselves, by tearing it down. Have I taught you nothing?
Sean: You mustn't be so hard on yourself, Your Majesty. You're an excellent teacher.
Tony: It's not your fault your son and daughter learned nothing.
Sean: They learned blasphemy.
Tony: True.
Young Maddie: Father, the fault is mine. I goaded Severus on, and so I am responsible.
Pharaoh Rumple I: Hmm. Responsible. Do you know the meaning of that word, Severus?
Severus: I understand, Father.
Pharaoh: And do you understand the task for which your birth has destined you? The Ancient Traditions. When I pass into the Next World, then you will be The Morning and Evening Star.
Severus: One damage temple does not destroy centuries of tradition.
Pharaoh Rumple I: But one weak link can break the chain of a mighty dynasty!
[Queen Belle walks to Pharaoh]
Pharaoh Rumple I: [sighing] You have my leave to go.
Severus: Father. [walks away]
Young Maddie: Father? You know it was really my fault. Must you be so hard on him?
Pharaoh Rumple I: Maddie, you will never have to carry a burden like the crown I will pass to Severus. He must not allow himself to be led astray, not even by you, my daughter.
Young Maddie: All he cares about is... is your approval. I know he will live up to your expectations. He only needs the opportunity.
Pharaoh Rumple I: Maybe. Maybe so. Go now. I shall see you both tonight.
Young Maddie: [walks away, then she starts whistling] Well, that went well.
Severus: Just go away.
Young Maddie: Could have been worse.
Severus: "The weak link in the chain." That's what he called me.
Young Maddie: [sighs, then continues sewing] Well, you are rather pathetic.
Severus: Irresponsible, ignorant of the traditions. He practically accused me of bringing down the dynasty.
Young Maddie: Yeah, I can see it now. There go the pyramids! [laughing]
Severus: [gets down] You can laugh about it!
Young Maddie: Statues cracking and toppling over. The Nile drying up. Single-handedly, you will manage to bring the greatest kingdom on earth to ruin.
Severus: Tell me this, Maddie. Tell me this. Why is it that every time you start something, I'm the one who ends up in trouble?
[the bag falls on Sean and Tony]
Sean: Ah, man!
Tony: Oh!
Sean: Ah! Severus! You're in trouble, young man!
Tony: Severus, get down here! I think you owe us an apology.
Sean: Oh, my new thing! I am so upset!
Young Maddie: You might as well.
Tony: By the power of Ra, you'll pay for this!
Sean: We're gonna tell the Pharaoh!
[Severus dumps the wine on Sean and Tony]
Sean: Oh, look at me! I'm drenched again!
Young Maddie: Hey. I figured it out. You know what your problem is, Severus?
Severus: What?
Young Maddie: You care too much.
Severus: And your problem is, you don't care at all. [spins the wig]
Young Maddie: Oh, in that case, I suppose you care a lot more than I do that we're late for the banquet, for example.
[they all run]
Severus: I'm done for. Father will kill me.
Young Maddie: Don't worry. Nobody will even notice us coming in.
[they both get out, then the crowd cheer]
Severus: "Nobody will even notice."
Queen Belle: [walking to Severus and Maddie] Ah, the young prince and princess.
[they all hug]
Queen Belle: Severus, you were just named prince regent. You are now responsible for overseeing all the temples. I suggest you get over there and thank your father.
Queen Belle: Apparently, Maddie, someone thought he just needed the opportunity.
Young Maddie: My Lord Pharaoh. I propose that the high priests offer tribute to their new regent.
Pharaoh Rumple I: An excellent idea. Sean! Tony!
Sean: Tony.
Tony: Hmm?
Sean: The Midian boy.
Tony: That's a good idea!
Sean: Go get him. By the power of Ra, we present for your delegation and delight, an exotic apparition stolen from a faraway land.
[the camel appears with Erik on its back]
Sean: We offer you this delicate desert flower.
[pulls Erik out of the camel]
Severus: Let us inspect this desert flower.
[he chomps at Severus]
Severus: More like a desert cobra.
Young Maddie: [to Erik, laughing] Not much of a snake charmer, are you?
Severus: [pushes Young Maddie] That's why I give him to you.
Young Maddie: No, that's generous, but...
Erik: I won't be given to anyone. Especially an arrogant, pampered palace brat!
Severus: [chuckling] Are you going to let him talk to you like that?
Young Maddie: You will show the proper respect for a prince and Princess of Egypt.
Erik: But I am showing you all the respect you deserve. None! [starts whip cracking by fighting]
Young Maddie: No. Wait! Be still.
Erik: Untie this rope! I demand you set me free!
Young Maddie: Be still.
Erik: Let go!
Young Maddie: As you wish. [lets go of the rope, then falling backwards in the water, then the crowd laugh]
Severus: [laughing] You there! Have him dried off, and sent to Princess Maddie's chambers. If it pleases you, Father, my first act as regent, is to appoint Maddie, as royal chief architect.
[the crowd cheer, then Severus walks away with Erik, being wet, then Young Maddie opens the doors]
Young Maddie: Well, right. [opens the curtain to Tony, being tied up, gasping, then muffled speaking, by the dogs wuffled whining, then gasping, then running while looking down at Erik walking away with a camel]
Erik: Shh. Come on.
Young Maddie: [climbs down, then looking at the people walking away] Guards.
Both: Princess Maddie.
Young Maddie: Uh, there's a... a man tied up in my room. Well, look into it.
Both: Right away, highness.
[she walks away by looking at a camel with Erik, then walking up]
Erik: Please, I need water. I have a long journey ahead of me.
Ayano: May God protect you.
Erik: Thank you. Hut-hut!
[Young Maddie runs by looking at the camel walking away with Erik, then breaking a glass]
Ayano: Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I... Oh, please forgive me. I... I didn't expect to see you here, of all places, at-at-at our door. Mmm, at last!
Young Maddie: [chuckling] At last?
Ayano: Didn't I tell you, John? I knew she would return to us when she was ready.
John: Ayano, do you want us flogged?
Ayano: I knew you cared about our freedom.
John: Ayano!
Young Maddie: Freedom? Why would I care about that?
Ayano: Because you're... Well, you're our sister.
Young Maddie: What?
Ayano: Be... [sighing] They never told you?
Young Maddie: Who never told me what?
Ayano: But you're here. You must know.
Young Maddie: Be careful, slave!
John: [grabs Ayano] Oh, my good princess. Um, she's- she's exhausted from the day's work. Uh, not that it was too much. We... We quite enjoyed it. But-but she's confused and knows not to whom she speaks.
Ayano: I know to whom I speak, John. I know who you are. And you are not a princess of Egypt.
John: Ayano.
Young Maddie: What did you say?
John: Your Majesty, pay her no heed. C-come,
Ayano. May I discuss something with you?
Ayano: No, John. No! Please, Maddie, you must believe!
John: That's enough.
Ayano: You were born of my mother, Christine.
John: Stop it.
Ayano: You are our sister!
Young Maddie: Now you go too far. You shall be punished.
John: No! Please, uh, Your Majesty. She's ill. She's very ill. We beg your forgiveness. Please, Ayano, let us go.
Ayano: No, John. Our mother set you adrift in a basket to save your life!
Young Maddie: Save my life? From who?
Ayano: Ask the man that you call "Father."
Young Maddie: How dare you?
Ayano: God saved you to be our deliverer.
Young Maddie: Enough of this.
Ayano: And you are, Maddie. You are the deliverer.
Young Maddie: [grabs Ayano] I said, enough! You will regret this night. [walks away by Ayano]
Ayano: [singing] Hush now, my baby, be still, love don't cry. Sleep as you're rocked by the stream. Sleep and remember my last lullaby. So I'll be with you when you dream. [puts tears in her eyes, then Maddie runs away, by tripping the man]
Man: Did you see her? It's Maddie.
Young Maddie: [continues running away, then looking at the temple, then she continues running away, then singing] Gleaming in the moonlight, cool and clean and all I've ever known. All I ever wanted. Sweet perfumes of incense, and graceful rooms of alabaster stone. All I ever wanted. This is my home. With my father mother, brother. Oh, so noble oh, so strong. Now I am home, here among my trappings and belongings, I belong. And if anybody doubts it, they couldn't be more wrong. I am a sovereign princess of Egypt. A daughter of the proud history that's shown etched on every wall. Surely this is all I ever wanted. All I ever wanted. All I ever wanted.
[she closes the eyes, then opening the eyes on the wall by looking around, then Pharaoh points at Young Maddie, then the guards run at Young Maddie, running away by a bush, then the guards continue running on a wall, by a woman laying down the stairs, then putting hands out, then knocking the woman, then grabbing a baby, then they take Ayano and the baby, then looking at the guards taking the baby by Ayano, then they all run, by the guards running up the stairs, then the guards run at the wall, the they all walk on the ceiling and the wall, then running up to Ayano and the baby, then putting a basket down, then opening the bushes, then putting a baby in the basket, then closing the top, then flowing on the river, then putting a tear drop, then the guards run at Young Maddie, then falling down with babies and crocodiles, then the shadow appears, then getting up, then laying at the wall, then grabbing a torch, looking around, and a wall, then walking in the walls, then gasping at Pharaoh pointing at the baby, with the babies in the water by crocodiles, then putting the torch down]
Pharaoh Rumple I: The Hebrews grew too numerous. They might have risen against us.
Young Maddie: [to Pharaoh] Father, tell me you didn't do this.
Pharaoh Rumple I: Maddie, sometimes, for the greater good, sacrifices must be made.
Young Maddie: [gets up, then putting a hand on the baby] Sacrifices?
Pharaoh Rumple I: Oh, my daughter. They were only slaves.
[she walks backward, then running away, then sitting down, looking at the geese]
Queen Belle: Maddie?
Young Maddie: Is this where you found me?
Queen Belle: Maddie, please try to understand.
Young Maddie: So... So everything I thought, everything I am, is a lie.
Queen Belle: No. You are our daughter, and we love you.
Young Maddie: Why did you choose me?
Queen Belle: We didn't, Maddie. The gods did. [walks down the stairs, then sitting down, then singing] This is your home, my daughter, here the river brought you, and it's here the river meant to be your home. Now you know the truth, love. Now forget and be content, when the gods send you a blessing, you don't ask why it was sent.
[they both hug]
Severus: [puts scrolls down] Last night, the gods granted me a vision. I'm not merely going to restore this temple, I will make it more grand, more splendid than any other one in Egypt.
[the slave whip cracks the man's butt, then walking up, then the men continue pulling, then bringing a bag, then the men continue pulling, then knocking the man]
Man: Get up! [whip cracks the bag]
[he walks away by knocking the man]
Severus: Maddie! Look. Fate has turned our little misadventure into a great opportunity.
[they both walk]
Guard: Get up, old man!
Severus: Father will be so pleased...
Guard: Put your back into it! Faster!
[John continues chopping]
Severus: This is just the beginning. A gateway will open to an entire new city of white limestone, more dazzling than the sun. And here, a statue of Hapi.
Guard: [whip cracks the man] I said, hurry!
Severus: ...two great column halls.
Ayano: Stop it!
John: Ayano, no!
Ayano: Somebody's got to stop this!
John: There's nothing we can do.
[the guard whip cracks the man, then running by looking at a man with a whip crack hitting him]
Young Maddie: [quietly] Stop it. [louder] Stop. Stop it! Leave that man alone!
Severus: Maddie!
[Maddie attacks the guard, who falls down, breaking wood below]
Guard #2: Out of my way. Out of my way. Move! Who did this?
Man: Up there! It's her. Up there.
[she pants, then looking at the men, gasping, then running away]
Ayano: Maddie!
[she continues running away, then rolling down, then Severus grabs Maddie]
Severus: Maddie, what's going on? Maddie!
[she continues running away]
Severus: Maddie! Maddie!
Young Maddie: Let me go!
Severus: No, wait.
Young Maddie: You saw what happened. I just killed a man.
Severus: We can take care of that. I will make it so it never happened.
Young Maddie: Nothing you can say can change what I've done.
Severus: I am Egypt! The Morning and The Evening Star! If I say "Day is Night," it will be written, and you will be what I say you are! I say you are innocent.
Young Maddie: What you say does not matter. You don't understand. I can't stay here any longer.
Severus: Maddie!
Young Maddie: No! All I've ever known to be true is a lie. I'm not who you think I am.
Severus: What are you talking about?
Young Maddie: Go ask the man I once called "Father." [walks away]
Severus: Maddie? Please.
Young Maddie: [to Severus] Good-bye, brother.
[walks away]
Severus: Maddie! Maddie!
[she continues running away, by desert, then walking down, by wind, canyon, on top, then crawling, by rocks, sun, then tripping on the ground, ripping a sandal, then grabbing the sandal, being torn, throwing away, then taking the necklace off, then taking the rings off, looking at the ring, then putting the ring back on, then taking the wig off, then throws the wig on the ground by the wind on Maddie, with the hair on top of the desert, with the camel walking under Young Maddie, then sniffing, then grabbing the head, biting the hair, then spitting at Young Maddie, with the camel walking away, shaking the bag]
Young Maddie: [getting out of the desert wind] Hey, wait. Please. [drags her on the ground, then she continues dragging on the ground, by sheep, then hits a well, then putting the face in the water, all wet, then the sheep drops water out]
Girl: What are you doing? Help! Let our sheep drink! Leave us alone! Get away! Stop it! My father's the high priest of Midian. You're going to be in big trouble.
Young Maddie: Hey, you. Aren't these your camels? Hut-hut!
Man: No, no! No, no! [they both run to get the camels] Wait! Wait, stop!
[she lays on the ground, nut falls into the well, then they all try to get Young Maddie back up]
Erik: What are you girls doing?
Boy: We're trying to get the funny woman out of the well.
Erik: Trying to get the funny woman out of the well. Well, that's one I've never heard before. [gasping] Oh, my. Oh, uh, don't worry down there! Uh, we'll get you out. Hold on!
[they all pull Young Maddie back up]
Erik: You.
Young Maddie: Huh?
Erik: [lets go of the well, falling in as retribution for what happened] Mm-hmm.
[walks away]
Girl: That's why papa says he'll never get married.
[they all wash Young Maddie]
Young Maddie: You don't have to do this. Ladies, please, I'm really... I'm really quite... No, not there, please. [laughing] That tickles. Ladies, you've cleaned every inch of me. Whoa, I... I was wrong.
[the kids laugh]
Loki: Let me through. Let me through. I want to see her. Ah! You are most welcome. [hugs Young Maddie] You should not be a stranger in this land. You have been sent as a blessing. And, tonight, you shall be my honored guest.
[walks away, laughing]
Erik: My father, Loki, high priest of Midian.
[she walks outside of the tent, then looking at a fire]
Girl: Psst. Sit with me.
Young Maddie: Um, all right. [sits down, then taking an orange]
Girl: Psst. Not yet.
Young Maddie: Oh, sorry.
Loki: My children, let us give thanks for this bountiful food. [pets the boy] And let us also give thanks for the presence of this brave, young woman whom we here tonight.
[they all clap]
Young Maddie: Please, sir, I wish you wouldn't. I've done nothing in my life worth honoring.
Loki: First, you rescue Erik from Egypt, then you defend my younger daughters from brigands. You think that is nothing? It seems you do not know what is worthy of honor. [singing] A single thread in a tapestry though it's color brightly shine can never see its purpose in a pattern of the grand design, and the stone that sits on the very top of the mountain's mighty face. Does it think it's more important than the stones that form the base? So how can you see what your life is worth or where your value lies. You can never see through the eyes of woman. You must look at your life, look at your life through heaven's eyes.
Crowd: [singing] La-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la. La, la-la-la-la-la-la. La-la-la-la-la-la. Lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-la.
Girl: Dance with me.
Young Maddie: No, I don't know how.
[grabs the children, then clapping to the dancing beat, then they all pull up a tent]
Loki: [singing] A lake of gold in the desert sand is less than a cool, fresh spring, and to one lost sheep a shepherd girl is greater than the richest queen. If a woman lose everything she knows has she truly lost her worth, or is it the beginning of a new and brighter birth? So how do you measure the worth of a woman in wealth or strength or size? In how much she gained or how much she gave? The answer will come, the answer will come to her who tries, to look at her life through heaven's eyes! And that's why we share all we have with you, though there's little to be found. When all you've got is nothing, there's a lot to go around. No life can escape being blown out by the winds of change and chance. And though you never know all the steps.
Erik: Dance with me.
Maddie: No, I... No. No!
Loki: [singing] You must learn to join the dance. You must learn to join the dance!
Crowd: [singing] La-la-la, lee-lai-lai-lai. Lai-lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai. Lai-lai-lai-lai, lee-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai. Lai-lai-lai-lai, lee-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai. Lai-lai-lai-lai, lee-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai-lai-lai-lai! Lai-lai-lai-lai, lee-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai! Lai-lai-lai-lai, lee-lai-lai, lai-lai-lai-lai-lai! So how do you judge what a woman is worth by what she builds or buys, you can never see with your eyes on earth! Look through heaven's eyes! Look at your life! Look at your life! Look at your life through heaven's eyes!
Maddie: [touches Erik, then kissing Erik] I love you. [gets up, then walking away, then opening a curtain, looking at the sky by the sheep, then inhaling, then walking by the sheep, then petting the sheep, then the sheep runs away, then sighing, then walking up] It's too early for this. [she walks inside a cave by God, then looking at it, then getting down by God, then touching the fire, holding a stick, then the head touches a fire]
God: Maddie. Maddie. Maddie. Maddie.
Maddie: Here I am.
God: Take the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.
[the rocks roll away]
Maddie: Who are you?
God: [echoing] I am that I am.
Maddie: I don't understand.
God: I am the God of your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Severus.
[Maddie drops the stick]
Ayano: You were born of my mother, Christine. You are our sister.
Maddie: [drops the sandals] What do you want with me?
God: I have seen the oppression of my people in Egypt, and have heard their cry.
Young Maddie: Stop it! Leave that man alone!
God: So I have come down to deliver them out of slavery, and bring them to a good land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And so, unto Pharaoh, I shall send you.
Maddie: Me? Wh-who am I to lead these people? They'll never believe me. They won't even listen.
God: I shall teach you what to say.
Young Maddie: Let my people go!
Maddie: But I was their enemy. I was the princess of Egypt, the daughter of a man who slaughtered their children. You've... You've chosen the wrong messenger. H-how can I even speak to these people?
God: Who made man's mouth? Who made the deaf, the mute, the seeing or the blind? Did not I? Now go!
[she pants]
Gods: Oh, Maddie, I shall be with you when you go to the king of Egypt. But Pharaoh will not listen. So I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders. Take the staff in your hand, Maddie. With it, you shall do my wonders. I shall be with you, Maddie. Maddie. Maddie.
[she looks at a stick, then grabbing a stick, then standing up, by looking at the leaves falling down, then the sheep runs, then looking at a village, then running by Erik, then dancing with Erik with scenes with no dialogue, then hugging, then showing a feet, then grabbing a stick, then walking around, then back to dialogue]
Erik: But, Maddie, you are just one woman.
Maddie: Erik, please. [sighing] Look at your family.
[they all chatter]
Maddie: They are free. They have a future. They have hopes and dreams, and the promise of a life with dignity. That is what I want for my people. And that is why I must do the task that God has given me.
[the people walk with the sheep, then they hug]
Erik: I'm coming with you.
[they all wave with the camel walking by Maddie and Erik, by desert, buildings, then the men push, with the camel walking with Maddie and Erik, then laying on the ground, then grabbing the boy, then the men walk away, the guards walk inside, by the men, then they all lay down, then Severus puts his hand up]
Maddie: Severus.
Severus: Maddie? Is it really?
[they both nod, then Severus walks down the stairs by Maddie and Erik]
Severus: [hugs Maddie] Maddie!
Maddie: Severus!
Severus: Where have you been? I took you for dead.
[they both laugh]
Severus: Look at you!
Maddie: Pharaoh.
Severus: Well, look at you. What on earth are you dressed as?
Maddie: Oh, Severus, it's so good to see you.
Sean: Excuse me, Your Majesty. We are compelled to remind you this woman committed a serious crime against the gods.
Tony: We are loathe to bring it up, mind you.
Sean: The law clearly states the punishment for such a crime...
Tony: Death!
Sean: We hesitate to say it.
Severus: Be still. Pharaoh speaks. I am the Morning and the Evening Star.
Maddie: Severus.
Severus: It shall be as I say. I pardon forever all crimes of which she stands accused, and will have it known that she is our sister Maddie, the princess of Egypt.
Maddie: Severus, in my heart, you are my brother, but things cannot be as they were.
Severus: I see no reason why not.
Maddie: You know I am a Hebrew, and the God od the Hebrews came to me.
Severus: What?
Maddie: He commands that you let his people go.
[the crowd murmur]
Severus: Commands?
Maddie: [raises her stick] Behold, the power of God. [puts her stick down, then transforming into a snake]
Severus: Well, uh, impressive. Hmm. Very well, Maddie. I'll play along. [chuckling] Sean. Tony. Give this snake charmer our answer.
[they chuckle, then they dance by closing the windows, shining at the mirror, by putting hands up and down]
Both: By the power of Ra.
Sean: Mut.
Tony: Nut.
Sean: Khnum.
Tony: Ptah.
Sean: Nephthys.
Tony: Nekhbet.
Sean: Sobek.
Tony: Sekhmet. Sokar. Selket. Reshpu. Wadjet. Anubis. Anukis. Seshmu. Meshkent.
Sean: Hemsut.
Tony: Tefnut.
Sean: Heket.
Tony: Mafdet.
Sean: Ra, Mut, Nut, Ptah. Hemsut, Tefnut, Sokar, Selket. Seshmu, Reshpu, Sobek, Wadjet. Heket, Mafdet, Nephthys, Nekhbet, Ra! [singing] So you think you've got friends in high places with the power to put us on the run.
Tony: [singing] Well, forgive us these smiles on our faces. You'll know what power is when we are done.
Both: Daughter.
Sean: [singing] You're playing with the big boys now.
Tony: [singing] Playing with the big boys now.
Sean: Oh, that's pretty. [singing] Every spell and gesture.
Tony: [singing] Tells you who's the best.
Both: [singing] You're playing with the big boys now. You're playing with the big boys now. You're playing with the big boys now.
Sean: [singing] Stop this foolish mission!
Tony: [singing] Watch a true magician!
Both: [singing] Give an exhibition how!
Tony: [singing] Pick up your silly twig, girl!
Both: [singing] You're playing with the big boys now!
Sean: Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Priests: [singing] By the power of Ra, Mut, Nut, Khnum, Ptah, Sobek, Sekhmet, Sokar, Selket, Anubis, Anukis, Hemsut, Tefnut, Meshkent, Mafdet!
Both: [singing] You're playing with the big boys now! You're playing witb the big boys now! By the might of Horus, you will kneel before us! Kneel to our splendorous power!
Sean: [singing] You put up a front!
Tony: [singing] You put up a fight!
Sean: [singing] And just to show we feel no spite.
Tony: [singing] You can be our acolyte.
Sean: [singing] But first, girl. It's time to bow.
Priests: Kowtow! Or is's your own grave you'll dig, girl. You're playing with the big boys. Playing with the big boys. Playing with the big boys. Playing with the big boys! Playing with the big boys! Playing with the big boys! Playing with the big boys now!
[the crowd cheer]
Tony: They love it.
[they all shout and cheer, then grabbing a snake, transforming back into a stick, then they both walk out]
Severus: [chuckling] All right, Maddie. I know you. [takes the hat off] What's this really about?
Maddie: Severus, look. What do you see?
Severus: A greater Egypt than that of my father.
Maddie: That is not what I see.
Severus: [puts the hat down] Maddie, I cannot change what you see. I have to maintain the ancient traditions. I bear the weight of my father's crown.
Maddie: Do you still not understand what Rumple was?
Severus: He was a great leader.
Maddie: His hands bore the blood of thousands of children.
Severus: Hmph. Slaves.
Maddie: My people. And I can no longer hide in the desert while they suffer at your hands.
Severus: So, you have returned, only to free them.
[she takes the ring off, then putting on a chair]
Maddie: I'm sorry.
Severus: [takes the ring] Yes. I had hoped that... [kisses the ring, then getting out of a chair, then putting the hat back on] I do not know this God. Neither will I let your people go.
Maddie: Severus, please, you must listen...
Severus: I will not be the weak link! [walks away, then opening the doors] Tell your people as of today, their workload has been doubled, thanks to your God. Or is it thanks to you?
[closing the doors, then picking mud off]
Man: It's Maddie. [throws mud at Maddie, then falling down]
Erik: Maddie! Ohh.
John: So, Maddie, how does it feel when you get struck to the ground?
Maddie: I didn't mean to cause you more pain. I'm just trying to do as God told me.
John': God? When did you start caring about any of us? In fact, Maddie, when did you start caring about slaves? Was it when you found out that you were one of us?
Erik: Don't listen to him.
Maddie: No, he's... he's right. I did not see because I did not wish to see.
John: Oh, you didn't see because you didn't wish to see. Ah! Well, that makes everything fine then, doesn't it?
Ayano: John! You shame yourself. [walks down by Maddie and Erik]
Maddie: Ayano. I'm so sorry. [puts her hand on the face]
Ayano: Maddie, hear what I say. I have been a slave all my life, and God has never answered my prayers until now. God saved you from the river, he saved you in all your wanderings, and even now he saves you from the wrath of Pharaoh. God will not abandon you, so don't you abandon us.
[they all look at the men, then grabbing a stick, then walking down, then Ayano walks down]
John: Ayano. Where are you going? A-Ayano.
[they all walk down, then looking at a boat]
Sean: The ball disappears. Where is it? In his hand.
[they all laugh]
Maddie: Severus! Let my people go!
Severus: [laughing] Still gnawing away at that bone, are we? Carry on.
Maddie: You cannot keep ignoring us.
Severus: Enough! I will hear no more of this Hebrew nonsense. Bring her to me.
[the guards take swords out, then they jump in the water]
Erik: Maddie!
John: No!
[the guards continue walking in the water, then the wind blows at Maddie]
God: Take the staff in your hand, Maddie.
[she holds the stick, then walking in the water, then touching the water, putting the whole blood in the water, then they all run down, then the blood continues flowing at the guards, then touching the blood of water]
Draco: [touching the blood of water] Father.
Erik: It's...
Guard: Blood! Blood! Oh, blood!
[they all run to the boat, then holding on, putting blood around]
Severus: Sean! Tony! Explain this to me!
Sean: Ah!
Tony: Rest assured, Your Majesty,
Sean: Uh, yes, we were going to demonstrate the superior might of our gods. Uh... [puts the jug down, then putting blood in] By the power of Ra!
Severus: [puts his hand in the blood, chuckling, then laughing] Abandon this futile mission, Maddie. I've indulged you long enough. This must now be finished.
[they all look at the boat]
Maddie: No, Severus. It is only beginning.
John: But, Maddie, d-didn't you see what happened? The priests did the same thing. Pharaoh still has the power over our lives.
Maddie: [puts her hand on the shoulder] Yes, John, it's true. Pharaoh has the power. He can take away your food, your home, your freedom. He can take away your sons and daughters. With one word, Pharaoh can take away your very lives. But there is one thing he cannot take away from you: your faith. Believe, for we will see God's wonders.
[they all look at a building, then cut to a building, with geese flying away, with the music playing, then putting the pot down, then the frogs leap up the stairs, then running away, then growing a cup, with ants walking away, then the cow lays down, then getting up, then the flies fly by a guard, the the flies fly, then the frogs leap, then hearing thunder, then fireballs fall down, then looking at the fireballs falling down, then running away, then looking around, then landing on the man, then hearing thunderclap, then looking at the flies, by grasshoppers, then they all run away, then cutting the hay, then grabbing a man, then looking at Maddie, then going inside, then grabbing a table, then breaking a table, then pointing, then grabbing the food, then looking at Maddie, then the fireballs continue falling down, then running away, then putting seperate faces, then Severus walks away, then the wind blows at Maddie, then the statue breaks, then then the buildings all fade, then walking up, then touching the hand on the wall, walking in the dark building]
[Chorus]
Thus saith the Lord:
Since you refuse to free my people
All through the land of Egypt...
I send a pestilence and plague
Into your house, into your bed
Into your streams, into your streets
Into your drink, into your bread
Upon your cattle, on your sheep
Upon your oxen in your field
Into your dreams, into your sleep
Until you break, until you yield
I send the swarm, I send the horde
Thus saith the Lord
[Maddie]
Once I called you brother
Once I thought the chance
to make you laugh
Was all I ever wanted...
[Chorus]
I send the thunder from the sky
I send the fire raining down
[Maddie]
And even now I wish that God
had chose another
Serving as your foe on his behalf
Is the last thing that I wanted...
[Chorus]
I send a hail of burning ice
On ev'ry field, on ev'ry town
[Maddie]
This was my home
All this pain and devastation
How it tortures me inside
All the innocent who suffer
From your stubbornness and pride...
[Chorus]
I send the locusts on a wind
Such as the world has never seen
On ev'ry leaf, on ev'ry stalk
Until there's nothing left of green
I send my scourge, I send my sword
Thus saith the Lord!
[Maddie]
You who I called brother
[Severus]
Why must you call down another blow?
[Chorus]
I send my scourge, I send my sword
[Maddie]
Let my people go
[Maddie and Chorus]
Thus saith the Lord
[Severus]
You who I called sister
How could you have come to hate me so?
Is this what you wanted?
[Chorus]
I send the swarm, I send the horde...
[Severus]
Then let my heart be hardened
And never mind how high the cost may grow
This will still be so:
I will never let your people go...
[Chorus]
Thus saith the Lord:
[Maddie]
Thus saith the Lord:
[Severus]
I will not...
[Maddie, Severus, and Chorus]
Let your (my) people go!
Maddie: Severus? Severus?
Severus: Oh. Let me guess. You want me to let your people go.
Maddie: I hoped I would find you here.
Severus: [throws a cup on the ground] Get out!
Maddie: Severus, we must bring this to an end. Severus, please, talk to me. We could always talk here. [she sighs] This place. So many memories. I remember the time you switched the heads of the gods of the Temple of Ra. [she sighs]
Severus: If I recall correctly, you were there switching heads right along with me.
Maddie: No, it was you. I didn't do that.
Severus: Oh, yes, you did. You put the hippo on the crocodile, and the crocodile...
Maddie: On the falcon.
Severus: Yes! The priest thought it was a horrible omen and fasted for two months. Father was furious. You were getting me into trouble. [walks away, then Maddie walks up to Severus] But then... [chuckling] You were always there to get me out of trouble again. Hmmph. Why can't things be the way they were before?
Draco: Father. It's so dark. I'm frightened. Why is she here? Isn't that the woman who did all this?
Severus: Yes. But one must wonder why.
Maddie: Because no kingdom should be made on the backs of slaves. Severus, your stubbornness is bringing this misery upon Egypt. It would cease if only you would let the Hebrews go.
Severus: I will not be dictated to. I will not be threatened. I am The Morning and The Evening star. I am Pharaoh.
Maddie: Something else is coming. Something much worse than anything before. Please, let go of your contempt for life before it destroys everything you hold dear. Think of your son!
Severus: I do. You Hebrews have been nothing but trouble. My Father had the right idea about how to deal with your people.
Maddie: Severus...
Severus: And I think it's time I finished the job.
Maddie: Severus!
Severus: And there shall be a great cry in all of Egypt, such as never has been or ever will be again!
[camera zooms to Pharaoh pointing at a baby, babies in the water, and Draco, then looking around]
Maddie: Severus, you bring this upon yourself.
[camera zooms out of the building]
Maddie: God has come to me again, saying, "Take a lamb, and with its blood, mark the lintel and posts of every door, for tonight, I shall pass through the land of Egypt, and smite all the firstborn. But when I see the blood upon your door, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not enter."
[closing the window, then the wind appears, flowing down at the buildings, then rattling, then hugging the people, then flowing at the door, sleeping, escaping the breath, then flowing inside, escaping the breath, then blowing the fire out, then opening a window, looking at a wind, then closing the window, then walking upstairs, with the wind flowing, then the pottery breaks, then the wind continues flowing at the men, running away, with the shadow flowing on the head, then the breaths escape, then the wind disappears, then Severus walks up, holding Draco, then Maddie walks up, then putting a blanket around him]
Severus: You and your people, have my permission to go.
[she touches Severus]
Severus: Leave me!
[she looks at Draco, covered in blanket, then walking away, then hugging Draco, then hearing a baby wailing, then putting a stick down, then laying on a wall, sobbing, then sitting down, then walking away, then Erik appears by Maddie, then hugging her, then Ayano walks up to Erik and Maddie]
Ayano: [singing] Many nights we've prayed with no proof anyone could hear. In our hearts a hopeful song, we barely understood. Now we are not afraid. Although we know there's much to fear. We were moving mountains long before we knew we could. There can be miracles when you believe. Though hope is frail. It's hard to kill. Who knows what miracles you can achieve. When you believe somehow you will. You will when you believe.
Erik: [singing] In this time of fear, when prayers so often proved in vain. Hope seemed like the summer birds too swiftly flown away. Yet now I'm standing here.
Ayano: [singing] Now I'm standing here.
Erik: [singing] With so heart so full I can't explain.
Both: [singing] Seeking faith and speaking words I never thought I'd say. There can be miracles when you believe.
Ayano: [singing] Though hope is frail. It's hard to kill.
Erik: [singing] It's hard to kill.
Both: [singing] Who knows what miracles you can achieve. When you believe somehow you will. You will when you believe.
Child: [singing] A-shi-ra l'a-don-ai. Ki ga-oh ga-ah. A-shi-ra l'a-don-ai. Ki ga-oh ga-ah. Mi-cha-mo-cha ba-elim adonai. Mi-ka-mo-cha. Ne-dar ba-ko-desh.
Children: [singing] Na-chi-tah v'-chas-d'-cha. Am zu ga-al-ta. Na-chi-tah v'-chas-d'-cha. Am zu ga-al-ta. A-shi-ra, a-shi-ra a-shi-ra. A-shi-ra l'a-don-ai ki ga-oh ga-ah. A-shi-ra l'a-don-ai ki ga-oh ga-ah. Mi-cha-mo-cha ba-elim adonai. Mi-ka-mo-cha ne-dar ba-ko-desh. Na-chi-tah v'-chas-d'-cha am zu ga-al-ta. Na-chi-tah v'-chas-d'-cha am zu ga-al-ta! A-shi-ra, a-shi-ra! A-shi-ra!
Chorus: [singing] There can be miracles when you believe! Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill!
Ayano: [singing] It's hard to kill.
Chorus: [singing] Who knows what miracles you can achieve.
Ayano: [singing] You can achieve.
Chorus: [singing] When you believe, somehow you will. Now you will. You will when you believe.
Chorus: [singing] When you believe.
Ayano: [singing] You will when you.
Erik: [singing] You will.
Both: [singing] Believe.

God: With this staff, you shall do my wonders!
[she drops the stick, the the water flows up, by rocks, causing the wind, then John walks by Maddie, then walking away, then they all walk in, by the wind and thunder, then putting the sheep down, then breaking a wheel]
Maddie: Leave it!
[they continue walking, then lighting the torches, by a whale, then gasping, then they continue walking, then the camel lays on John]
John: Yeah, me too.
[he puts down the woman, then the tornarado hits the ground, then the tornado disappears, then taking a sword out, the the horses run, and the guards run by horses by charging the people, then the chariot breaks, then the horses continue running, then getting up]
Severus: Don't just stand there! Kill them!
[the guards run at the people]
Severus: Kill them all!
Maddie: The soldiers! They're coming!
[the people run away]
John: Maddie! Maddie! Hurry! Hurry! I got you.
Man: Look! The shore!
[the sea opens, then the men continue running away, then hearing a thunderclap, then the water falls down, then the water attacks the guards]
Severus: No! [the water puts Severus on a rock]
[she runs away by a wave by wind, then the water transforms back into the sea, long pause, then hugging John, then they all murmur and chatter, then hugging the child, then touching the sand, then hugging the woman, and Erik, then John hugs Maddie, then Ayano hugs Erik, then walking to Ayano and Erik, then Ayano hugs Maddie]
Maddie: Thank you.
[she walks away, then Maddie walks away, by looking at clouds and sea, then cut to Severus]

[last lines]
Maddie: Good-bye, brother. [she walks up]
Chorus: [singing] A-shi-ra l'a-don-ai. Ki ga-oh ga-ah! A-shi-ra l'a-don-ai. Ki ga-oh ga-ah.
Erik: Look. Look at your people, Maddie.
[they both look at the people]
Erik: They are free.
Chorus: [continues singing] Na-chi-tah v'-chas-d'-cha. Am zu ga-al-ta. A-shi-ra, a-shi-ra! A-shi-ra!
[Maddie walks by holding a stone, by walking down the hill, by looking at the village]
Christine: [singing] Deliever us!
