๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ eyes peeling back and forth in the corridor watching like a hawk, anxiety running ramped. This wasn't what Aerin had in mind when Azimio told her to 'prove her loyalty', she had assumed that'd it be something more stupid or immature like hanging JBI's tidy wides on the flag pole. But slushie bombing the only people who truly cared for her, who were always there for her through thick or thin...that wasn't what the girl had signed up for. A wall of jocks stood on either side, all perfectly lined with the worst Big Quench flavor know to man, lime.
If there was any way to leave a long-lasting sting in someone's eyes, then the lemon-lime flavour would be the perfect candidate. The Cline remembered when she had been hit with it, on occasion, the tangy itching sensation still scrapped at the surface of her eyes, she couldn't see well from a distance.
" So, are you clear on the plan, short stuff ?" Azimio asked as he craned his neck in Aerin's direction, she hesitated to nod, if the girl nodded then she would've been agreeing to their cruel tormented plan, instead Aerin kept her eyes glued to the clock. Scoffing the large staturted boy turned to Karofsky, who had just run from an adjacent corridor once he'd spotted a target.
" Berry at 8'oclock, she's with Gay Hummel andย Mega Wheezie," Karofsky confirmed, throwing a thumbs up in the direction of Azimio. Aerin could feel her heart racing at speeds that she couldn't control. The blonde watched Dave and Azimio trade malicious smirks at one another, eyes widening with excitement. They both passed Big Quench cups between the group of guys down the row, each one that Karofsky pulled out of his bag seemed to grow in size. When he finally got to Aerin the boy waved the 700ml plastic in the crook of his palm with a forceful grip, waiting for the blonde to come to the dark side.
" Well, what are you waiting for?" Karofsky beseeched, eyes narrowing in anticipation. Aerin took in a harsh swallow, the base of her palms clammed as she moved her hand to grab the cup from his, a million and one thought coursed through the girl's mind. This would be the ultimate betrayal, bigger than Gollum's dubois betrayal of Frodo for the ring, or Axel Rose and Slash. But if partaking in slushing Rachel meant that they'd leave her friends alone for good, then she was prepared to get her hands dirty, even if it meant being the ultimate backstabber.
Finally swiping the cup from Karofsky's hand, the Cline girl stood in position right in the back, it was the best possible way for Kurt not to identify her from the jump. The blonde's eyes caught sight of her prize, a cross stitched letterman's jacket with her own name written on the sleeve. Azimio made it a point to wave it in the girls face like a constant reminder as to why they had tricked her into their 'slushie-nado' in the first place. It's red luminous colour almost shone from the mast of that light that had been beaming in from the hallway window, dangling as if it was prized gold. The outer sphere of Aerin's lips began to slightly dry, as did her throat, and her guilty conscience kept on creeping in and out once in awhile.
" You don't have to do this," a voice beamed from behind her back in a whisper, when Aerin turned she met the eyes of her twin brother. " Put down the slushie, and walk away...your so much better than these scumbags, Aerin, and I know better than anyone else that there's a little part of you who wants to leave as well, stand your ground and show these asshats that you're not going to stoop to their level."
Taking in a sharp intake of breath, Aerin calmly shook her head whilst her hand slightly firmed on the base of the slushie cup. "You don't understand," the girl replied sharply, eyes darting to where Rachel would approaching. "They've been tormenting me for days now and making my life a complete misery. If I throw this then they'll leave me alone for good, we shook on it...they even said that they'd stop locking Artie in the porta-potty and before this Azimio said that he'd start showing the Glee Club kids some respect. I'm not doing this for myself Atticus, I'm doing this for my friends."
Atticus placed a hand on his sister's shoulder, "If they were really your friends then you'd spare them from getting publicly humiliated," the boy began as he reached to grab Aerin's slushie. " What's better? gaining a reputation and earning the 'loyalty' of people who don't even respect you, or loosing the trust of the only people who were ever there for you when mostly everyone else wasn't ?"
A shaky trickled from Aerin's lips as she turned to face Atticus, eyes slightly glistening with both persistence and reluctancy. One side of her wanted to toss her slushie right in Azimio's face as some sort of triumphant twist of events, to show the strong side of her that was buried underneath all the gunky mess of the blonde's ever changing personality. But the other reminded about their deal, about why she was even in this situation to begin with, loyalty ran deep but the Cline's happiness would always outweigh that...and her happiness laid with football.
Once she noticed Rachel around the corner, Aerin quickly snatched the cup back and unknowingly merely pushed Atticus back into lockers, making the boy slightly startled. " Loyalty is a decision, a resolution of the soul," Aerin remarked as she turned back around, anticipating crawling at her skin. " I chose to give mine for a purpose and not for some backhanded popular reputation that is only rewarded to artificial wannabees who probably have 0 direction in life." hearing the small statured brunette's familiar weird shrill echo from the adjacent corridor, Aerin then shuffled behind Karofsky and another jock so that Kurt and the others couldn't see her.
" Sometimes in life we have to make decisions that might alter our futures," Aerin responded with one final breath, "And this is mine, this is my sacrifice..." the blonde concluded once Rachel, Kurt and Mercedes rounded the corner, blissfully unaware of the messy catastrophe that was about to unfortunatelyย commence. All three of them seemed to be in a very deep seeded argument, most likely about who'd be singing the solo performance for Mr Schue's Leading Ladies week, Aerin could tell by Kurt's aggravated facial expression and Mercedes's highly raised arched brow as she listened to the Berry ramble about how she was entitled to the position more then her.
" With my Liza Minelli number, I'll be sure to blow Mr Schue's expectations right out of the water," said Rachel in a tone of sheer confidence," Though I personally find most of her music to rather lackluster in comparison to such wonders like Patti LaPoune and Miss Streisand, she gives off this 'independent' and 'fierce chic' aura that I just don't simply find in Barbra or Patti."
Aerin then heard Kurt pipe up, "I thought you were choosing to sing a love ballad with Finn, for the like 50th time this year..." the slim built brunette responded with folded arms as they moved through the halls from the other side. " What was it, Don't Go Breaking My Heart or Stay with You by John Legend ?"
Aerin felt her chest tighten, just a few more steps and they'd be toast.
" Neither," Rachel was quick to quip. "Finn decided to leave me in favour of singing a ensemble song with Puckerman and the other boys, they're singing I'm so Excited by the Pointer Sisters, except they're calling themselves the Pointer Dudes."
Just a couple more seconds.
Mercedes jumped into the conversation soon after, "Well I know that when Mr Schue hands me that solo I'll be ready to give it my damn all," she smirked making Rachel turn and subtly roll her eyes. "Because that's just who I am, whenever life throws an opportunity at me, I'll be ready to take it..no matter how big or small."
There they were, right on cue, It felt as though time had stopped for a moment. Everything around Aerin became almost oblique, a momentous dazed blur of haziness. She stood still in her spot, watching aimlessly without a clue as Azimio and all of the other 15 boys ambushed them together, potbelly chuckles bouncing off McKinley's crappy walls. The only thing that was able to snap her back to reality was Kurt's loud, painful shouting as lime seeped through the corner of his eyes and dribbled down his clothes. " We don't do anyth-, why do you keep doing this to us ?" the boy pleaded through gritted teeth, rough coughs escaping from his lips,ย "What did you people put in this, battery acid ?"
Azimio placed his hand on Kurt's slushie ridden shoulder, to which the Hummel quickly swatted away in disgust.ย "Extra zing," the large statured boy replied as he wiped residue on the back of Kurt's shirt. Karofsky shoved Kurt to the locker with force out of the blue, "We thought it'd be a nice touch, wash out all that zing that you love to flaunt about Lady Hummel..maybe this way you'll finally get the message."
Kurt scoffed, "I think I got your message loud and clear a long time ago," the boy echoed back as he tried to wipe off slushie from his eyes.
As Aerin looked up, her eyes connected with Rachel's lingering stare as light green canvased down the side of her face almost like a tear. The brunette furrowed her brows at first, she found it hard to believe that a girl who was praised upon her kindness as love for others would voluntarily partake in something so cruel and awful, but when she caught sight of the blonde's signature bracelets and the Big Quench cup that was shaking in her hands, all of Rachel's curious thoughts were confirmed.
"Please," the Berry asked simply with a slight quiver as she watched Aerin's hand move back in preparation.
"I'm sorry."
๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐, it's the thief of happiness and the one thing that strangles you from the inside out. It could measure to simple things like stealing extra cookies out of the cookie jar, to more horrible things like committing a criminal offense and lying about it for months on end. Aerin's gut-wrenching guilt still ate away at her constantly, she could still see Rachel's eyes widen once the slushie shot at her, and the sudden shriek that left her lips after it finally hit. It was a wonder how Azimio and Karofsky could sleep peacefully at night each day when they constantly harras and torment people. Luckily, the Cline had managed to quickly escape before Kurt or Mercedes had a chance of identifying her, but there was no doubt that Rachel had seen her.
Walking down the halls felt like one big game of eye spy, a constant guess as to which door Rachel would spring from. Aerin didn't want to run into her, she couldn't even imagine what she'd say, how she'd apologise for literally dousing the brunette's eyes with bitter lime residue. Each time the Cline came across a girl who either had brown hair that trapsed down toย their shoulders, someone with 'preschool teacher' looking clothing or anybody who was below the height of 5'6 and weirdly small sized shoes, she would instantly try to blend into the crowd. Luckily, Aerin had managed to finally get to her destination and seek refuge in an empty Science classroom where Sam Evans patiently waited.
The light blonde had agreed to help Aerin practice before her big performance in front of the Glee Club, since she was the 'guest of honour' according to Schue, whatever came out of her mouth had to apparently captivate joy and emotion in the audience. Sam had desperately asked if she'd sing, Party at a Rich Dude's House by Kesha, but as much as Aerin appreciated Sam's suggestive choice, she had opted to sing about love, because if there was one thing that everybody could relate to, then it would definitely be a song about finding true love.
When she walked into the Science classroom, Sam had already managed to arrive on time with his guitar and sheet music that was spread across a desk. "You're here ! finally !" he exclaimed as he gave her a small side hug, "I was beginning to think that you completely bailed on me for a moment."
Aerin chuckled slightly, "bail on you ? I could never !" the girl replied back as she let go of Sam's grasp, making the blonde smile in return.
Sam picked up the other half of his chocolate chip cookie and tossed it to the girl, "Here, were probably going to be in this room for a while considering you're not the best at singing," the boy teased as he stuck out his tongue whilst Aerin shot him a sarcastic offended look.
" I'll have you know that I was the Scarecrow in my Elementary School's production of the Wizard of Oz," Aerin replied back as she took a bite out of Sam's cookie, " And I killed that part, according to Chester Rodham."ย
Sam raised a brow in confusion, "Chester Rodham ? Is he some kind of famous critic?" the boy said in an inquisitive tone, passing sheet music towards the Cline girl.
" He was the Perez Hilton of my Elementary School," Aerin answered as her eyes scanned the sheet music that Sam had given her. A smile crept on the girl's upper lips once she read the title, he had found the perfect song. The lyrics, the chorus, everything fit perfectly with what she wanted to convey to the audience. Mr Schue wanted a song that captivated emotion, something that showcased woman in their best light. However, the sweater vest obsessed teacher never said anything about bringing light to the untangling love that one could feel for a person who they've lost.
Especially when that 'someone' would be sat center stage in the choir room
Aerin read through the lyrics, her smile widening and heart softening once she came across words that perfectly matched. " She says I smell like safety and home," the blonde recited under her breath, brown orbs glued to the sheet music that was in her grasp. "I named both of her eyes forever and please-don't-go," she continued, the girl's eyes slightly shifted to Sam's direction for a split second to silently share her excitement and appreciated with him. "I could be a morning sunshine all the time...all the time..this could be good," Aerin finally concluded, biting the bottom of her lip in contentment.
"So, what do you think ?" Sam softly questioned as he set his cookie down, Aerin turned on her heel to face the sandy blonde boy. She moved to the blackboard where he stood with outstretched arms and went in for a more meaningful hug. "Thank you," the girl smiled, as the Evans tired to comprehend what he did to receive such a loving embrace.
"For..."
" For understanding me," Aerin finished off his sentence of inquiry. "I've never felt such a deep rooted connection to a song before, and I've definitely never heard songs about falling for someone who isn't a unconventionally attractive boy."
Sam drew the Cline girl closer to his chest, grinning, the average statured sophomore cleared his voice to prepare to do one of his many infamous impressions, " No greater gift there is, than a generous heart," the boy remarked.ย Aerin tired to suppress the laughter that was trying to escape from her mouth, but once Sam complete his impression with a smarmy grin that weirdly stretched from either side of his face, the girl ended up bursting into loud spurts of laughter.
"What? Was it that bad ?" Sam responded through a couple breathy chuckles, "I think i've gotten better, just last week I was able to totally fool Quinn's mom into thinking that she had just dialed Al Pachino accidentally over the phone."
Still lingering in Sam's hug, Aerin shook her head. "Do you want the kind answer or the cold hard one ?" the blonde replied. He thought for a moment as they broke of from there hug but still intertwined each other's fingers together in a friendly way, of course.
" Cold," Sam hastefully responded, "I guess hearing some harsh criticism might help me to improve, even though I'm practically a pro by now."
" If you truly want me to be honest," Aerin began, "I think that your Yoda impression sounded like a helium baby who inhaled a vast amount of sand and hasn't drunken water in several days."
" Oh and while I'm at it, your Count Dracula impression sounds like an old man who's been hitting his pipe one to many times, and that weird Nanny McPhee voice that you do is an odd cross hybrid between the Joker from Batman Dark Night, and Dick Dastardly," the blonde finally concluded, leaving Sam with a partially gaped mouth out of shock for her ability to come up with such clever, snide insults. Although they weren't Santana level of brutal, for a girl who was considered to be the 'friendly go lucky' type it was quite a shock.
He playfully jabbed Aerin on her shoulder with his free hand to which the girl let out an over dramatic howl as a response. "Hey, watch the jacket..this is new !" the Cline giggled, Sam's facial expression changed momentarily once he realised the red letterman jacket that wrapped around Aerin like a prized garment. If he knew one thing, it was that she hadn't gotten that jacket as a welcome gift from Karofsky and the other guys. This was down to the curseful hands of Azimio Adams and his official 'Initiations' that he seemed to hand out like they were badges of honour, when in reality they were ways to slowly diminish a person's character until they turned sour.
Sam had been asked to test his own loyalty too when he initially joined the team, his initiation? Publicly humiliate a cheerio of his choice by taking them out on a date then standing that person up and broadcasting how desperate she was. Luckily, Finn was able to pull him far away from having to complete his morally mean task before it even began when the large statured boy asked him to come audition for Glee Club. But he feared that Aerin had unfortunately not wandered into the same luck, they had sunken their point dexter claws into her.
" They made you do something for it, didn't they ?" Sam asked as he leaned up against the blackboard whilst Aerin played with a pencil in between her finger, moving it up and down through each crevice.
There it was again, that heart-thumping feeling, the Cline's guilt had welcomed itself back inside her head once more. She took in a harsh swallow and quickly shook her head in response, "No..this is an extra, coach said I can have it," the blonde lied. Flashbacks soon drew in, Rachel's shriek, her paralyzed facial expression before the slushie hit her bare skin. It played in loops, like a broken tape recorder with no off switch.
"You sure ?" Sam checked as he watched Aerin's eyes dart to the floor with instantaneous speed, a look that always suggested that she was trying to hide something. "Aerin, you know that you can tell me anything...if they forced you into doing som-"
" I said no didn't I ?" Aerin quickly snapped, cutting off Sam mid-sentence which stunned the blonde.
" They didn't make me do anything, I would never let them...I'm much stronger than that."
This was one of the many reasons why the blonde didn't want to perform in front of people like Rachel Berry in the first place, judgement was not her foretaste. Mr. Schue had been pacing around the room for what felt like an eternity, explaining why women's voices have changed the industry and how from now on, he would consider trying to implement female-driven songs in their assignments. Aerin's mind was completely ajar from the conversation, weirdly, setlists and Schuester's sudden feministic lifestyle didn't really seem to interest her. All she wanted to do was sing what she had prepared with Sam in the Physics classroom, the anticipation was practically tickling at her like unsettled bed bugs.
" I still don't get what she's doing here,"ย Rachel remarked, hands firmly crossed against her tartan sweater which had a rather large cat stitched on the front, a fresh one from the slushie-covered stained one that was attached to her body from earlier.ย " When you implied that there would be a special guest at today's meeting, I was hoping that you'd meant someone who actually influenced music and not someone who takes joy in making other people's lives a misery."
Tina shared a confused in Rachel's direction, "Misery? what did she do ?" the raven-haired girl asked in an inquisitive tone.
Rachel turned to Tina, " She threw a slushie in my face, a high citrus one in fact," the brunette responded sharply, which made Aerin practically sink to the bottom of her chair. "It felt it burn through my supple smooth skin...look there's still a mark right below my eye," she turned to face Finn as she showed him her nonexistent scar. he softly grabbed at her face to examine it, pushing it back slightly for a better angle.
" Oh man, I can see it...looks pretty nasty," Finn remarked as took his hand off Rachel's face.
"Hold on, that was you ?" Mercedes asked with furrowed brows and eyes that were narrowed so far that her pupils had become enclosed by her eyelid. " I had to walk around with gunk sticking out of my hair from the extra stuff that was in one of those slushies," the girl then flicked a small chunk that had suddenly reemerged on her shoulder.
Kurt's stare was absent-minded, he didn't know who to believe. On one side he wanted to trust in the fact that Aerin wouldn't do something so heinous and partake in the one thing that constantly made going to school a constant panache for him. But the other knew that deep down, Rachel was most like right. the dark brunette remembered her being absent for a number of hours, he remembered the sheepish guilty grin that took up the entirety of the Cline's face once he found her again wandering in the corridors. She had suddenly come back with a team jacket that was definitely not in her property a couple of hours before.
" That's low, yo," Artie commented with his arms folded whilst he subtly shook his head.
Quinn was quick to jump in and defend her friend from the negative storm that was currently consuming the girl, "You can't prove anything, for all we know Rachel could be lying about Aerin slushie-ing her as some weird power trip."
" Why on earth would I do that ?"
" Because you're Rachel Berry," Brittany rebutted back simply, "An annoying evil dwarf who gives me the heebie geebies."
Santana bit her bottom lip tightly as she watched Aerin from her chair at the back of the risers, her urge to jump in was skyrocketing. It hurt, no ached, to be a bystander whilst everyone practically tore chunks out of the blonde. Stirred confusion reflected through Aerin's baby brown orbs and from the way she was hunched in her chair it seemed that her anxiety was bubbling from within. Santana was more than aware of that look, and if she knew Aerin, whatever came from it never ended well.
But before she could say anything Blaine had already beaten her to the punch line.
" I'm sorry Rachel, but with Quinn on this one," the gel-haired boy responded, earning a grin from the Fabray and a subsequent scowl from Rachel. "Aerin's not that cruel, and although I haven't known her for that long I'm still certain that she wouldn't do something like that."
" I saw her with my own eyes !" Rachel remarked once more in a stern tone
Aerin felt a lump form in her throat, and her hands start to slightly clam. The guilt from what she did was still dragging her down deeply, never in the girl's life had she felt so low. When Azimio had talked about an initiation she thought it would be something light-hearted, funny, weird; like hanging someone's underpants on the flagpole. But amusing the ones she cared for,ย leaving them drenched in a puddle of their own slushie gooped up mess. Sitting upright, the Cline angled her chair towards Rachel's and sat up. "I'm sorry okay? there, is that what you wanted Berry? I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm freaking sorry !" the girl unexpectedly spat
Rachel's eyes fell to the floor for a moment as she tried to recollect her anger, looking back up the small-statured brunette let out a tiny sigh. " Well...you can sincerely take back that apology," the girl said, " Because I don't accept it."
Noticing that the conversation was going south quickly, Mr. Schue jumped in to try and shift gears back to their topic. "Alright, settle down, this isn't the place or the time for that," the Glee club director responded. Once the group had become quieter after several attempts to calm them down Mr. Schue finally turned to Aerin and gave the girl a nod of indication, "The floor is all yours."
Aerin felt her breath hitch as she stood, time once again stood still. "I-I wanted to sing something that would reflect on my hardships as a single teen mother, the struggles that we face on the daily as we try to provide for our kids," the blonde began, taking in a sharp intake of breath. "But then I realized what I truly wanted to sing..who I truly wanted to sing too."
the Cline girl's gaze fell on Santana's eyes as the Latina looked down to try and avoid eye contact, she then shifted it to Brad the Piano Guy, and then the band who had been redying for their cue. Nodding, the older man began to play the opening chorus whilst Aerin tried to shift herself to the front of the classroom.
( she keeps me warm - by miranda lambert, sung by aerin cline and santana lopez ft new directions )
"She says I smell like safety and home," Aerin began as the lights slightly dimmed, "I named both of her eyes forever, and please-don't go."
Watching the subtle spotlight mascarade around, the Cline girl decided to move along with it, drawing nearer to everyone. "I could be a morning sunrise all the time, all the time, yeah, this could be good, this could be good. I can't change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to... and I can't change... even if I tried even if I wanted to."
Santana slowly lifted her head from the position that it had been in, and in that moment, the girl realized without a doubt who the song was truly about.
" My love, my love, my love, my love, she keeps me warm...she keeps me warm," Aerin continued as she interlocked eye contact with Santana. It was as if the two had been transmitted to another galaxy, for both girls everyone around them had completely disappeared. " What's your middle name? do you hate your job? do you fall in love too easily? what's your favorite word? do you like kissing girls? can I call you baby?...yeah, yeah."
Suddenly Santana felt herself rise from her chair and move to the rhythm of the song, "she says that people stare 'cause we look so good together, yeah, yeah, yeah." All eyes turned to the dark haired girl, a small smile crept on Sam's face once he watched the two sing to one another. There were many reasons for him picking the song, the main one was about it's importance but his true intentions laid with finally getting Aerin too see that she needed Santana again.
" I can't change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to, and I can't change, even if I tried...even if I wanted to, my love, my love, my love, my love," Aerin sang out.
Santana moved down towards Aerin, her eyes never left the blonde's once,"she keeps me warm, she keeps me warm, she keeps me warm...she keeps me warm."
Soon some of the other New Directions began to hum in the background to provide extra vocals, Artie wheeled himself so he could move around the pair as they sang together. Quinn and Mercedes soon joined by rising as they too held hands and moved to the front.
" I'm not crying on Sundays."
" Love is patient, love is kind," Mercedes belted out in sweet harmony as she linked arms with Santana and slightly pushed the Latina closer to Aerin playfully.
" I'm not crying on Sundays"
"I'm not crying on Sundays, love is patient, love is kind," Quinn sang out through a ray of contentment.
" No, oh," Aerin sang as the lights slightly dimmed once again, the blonde turned to Santana, all the memories of what they once had come rushing in like a tidal current, both of them reached for each other's hand, an oblique tear streamed down the side of the Cline girls face. She felt a connection, the universal pull that everybody described as two twin flames reuniting once more.
" My love, my love, my love, my love, she keeps me warm, she keeps me warm."

new day, new chapter ! how are you guys feeling about this one ? was it worth the wait ? lmao
aah i lowkey loved writing this one, aerin and santana singing 'she keeps me warm' is just so wholesome <3 i'm honestly in love with their relationship, but i do wish that i would've developed it properly so they're could've actually been a build
anywaysss idk when the next chapter will be, as of tomorrow i will be taking a short break from updating this and focusing on bonfire heart..which i never update, and most likely generation glee if i get the chance.
also ik she keeps me warm came out in 2014, and this is set in the 2010/11 school year but i personally felt like the song really connected with what i was trying to portray through clopez's relationship plus it fit the theme really well.
I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON OR NIGHT
ronnie loves u, mwah !
