"๐๐ ๐๐๐๐, ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ !" Atticus's friend Puck hollered as he threw the ball with force into the crowd of boys who were already in their stance positions . Aerin looked at them and scoffed inwardly, she knew she could beat all their asses if she tried hard enough.
The scorching Lima sun beamed down on the blonde's face as she leaned against a wall right outside the front doors of the infamous McKinley High. She'd heard all about the people here, how social status was more important than breathing, how being pretty and popular basically meant you won the lottery. She also knew about their 'Glee Club', there rivals were from her old school, Carmel High. She was friends with a couple people in Vocal Adrenaline, and she had once gone on a impromptu "date" with their captain Jesse St. James.
As she continued to spectate the boys awful passing her cell suddenly began to buzz spastically in her hand. Aerin averted her eyes down to her phone to see a plethora of text messages from her mother.
" Please don't screw up this time" she texted
"I can't afford to send you to another school, I'm losing money as it is".
Aerin huffed as she began to text back her reply
"Don't blame me for your money problems mother, I'm not the one who goes out to poker night every week. I have responsibilities to people, remember Lennon ?"
Lennon Grace, her pride and joy. She had given birth to her little ray of sunshine 2 years ago, when she was nothing more than a naive sixteen year old girl. Most would think that she hated being lumbered with a toddler, not being able to be a teen. But she didn't care, motherhood had changed her life for the better and in a way she was grateful that she had gotten knocked up.
Her thoughts were soon cut short when she was accidentally bumped into by a girl in a cheer uniform, causing the blonde to drop her phone on the pavement.
"Fuck" she cursed to herself, as she bent down to retrieve her now cracked phone. "What are you blind ?" she questioned, not realising that she had said her inner thoughts out loud.
The girl stopped dead in her tracks, she turns and begins to head towards Aerin, her arms crossed.
"Blind ?" she scoffed. "Don't you know when you see a big group of people walking together you're supposed to move your lazy ass to the side, it's basic manners" she hissed with attitude in her tone.
Aerin smirked as she tried to hold in her laughter, who did this girl think she was. Aerin bet she was one of those popular cheer girls her brother Atticus was always swooning over.
Aerin moved one step closer to the girl " Well maybe you should learn to walk around people. unless that's a foreign concept to you people at this dump" she aimed back breathlessly.
The Latina stood in complete silence for a moment, it was like she had been put on pause. She then inches even closer to Aerin as they meet at eye level, she was basically invading her personal space at this point.
She slowly raises her finger to Aerin's face, "You messed with the wrong nฤฉna, hermana. I'd watch my back if I was you, or I'll unleash Auntie Snixx all over your ass, new kid." She then strutted away with a twinge of sass in her step.
Aerin looked back at the girl one last time with interest, she didn't know who that girl was but she couldn't deny that she was pretty. She'd never met anyone like that before, most cheerleaders she had talked to were dull minded blondes with little to no brain cells.
"Boo!" Aerin is suddenly overcome with a strong smell of old tires and sweat when Atticus bear hugged her from behind. She quickly unlatched herself from his grip as she turns around and holds her nose to block the stench out.
"Dude, you smell like wet dog. You're offending my nostrils" she moans with annoyance.
Atticus rolled his eyes and sighedย "That delightful scent is actually manly musk, the ladies love it"
" ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐" she replied, as she clutched her backpack strap tightly. She really didn't want to admit it, but she was nervous about being here. This wasn't her first time moving schools but that feeling of anxiety was still there.
Each of the high schools she had gone to were always the same. The social heirarchy was the same, the students were the same and the teachers were all the fucking same.
Aerin stared wide eyed as she stood in the middle of all the chaos around her. Kids ran up and down the halls like a pack of crazed baboons, horny teens were pressed up against lockers doing things that would make a sailor blush.
Atticus patted her gently on the back "It's gonna be fine Truffle, don't be scared" he said reassuringly. Aerin looked back at her brother with a pout "I'm not scared, I'm just taking it all in" she mumbled.
Atticus had quickly lost interest in his sister's concerns as he pulled out a big strawberry slushie from his backpack. He stood to the side of the hallway, soon more boys had joined in and were all waiting at the sidelines with him. Aerin looked at her brother with confusion "What's with the slushies?" she asked curiously.
Atticus looked down at his sister with a slight smirk, "You'll see" he responded vaguely.
As soon as he had said that a short, brunette girl had rounded the corner. Her eyes stayed fixated on the floor until she looked up, she drops her sheet music as she shields her face from the impending cold blast that was about to hit her.
Each one of the jocks began to hurl their slushies at the innocent girl's face, one even threw the cup at her feet.ย Aerin looked in horror, what the hell had she just witnessed. How could people, let alone her own flesh and blood, be so cruel to a person who had never wronged them?.
Aerin felt her blood boil, she pinned her bully brother against the locker as she snatched his empty cup from his hand.
" Let go !" Atticus barked
" What the fuck- why would you throw that on her idiot, do you shitheads do this to every person you don't like ?" she cursed, as she let him go.
" You don't get it Aerin, in this school people like her are at the bottom of the pile,ย they're freak shows." he retorted.
"Freak shows?, how is she a freak ?" she integrated.
" She's in that gay-ass Glee Club. They're freaks, they even got a hold of Puck and like 3 other dudes on our team, even our old QB. I remember when Coach forced us to take ballet lessons from them, that was the worst week of my life" he revealed.
Aerin couldn't take it anymore, she thought she knew her brother. She felt a sense of shame that she was related to such a piece of scum.ย she didn't know where she was but she knew it was about to be a hell of a bumpy ride.
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. From Aerin's current 24 hour sour experience at Mckinley High School, she had grown to realize that was definitely hard to come by. So far, the blonde had been catcalled by a slightly perverted boy with biggest lenses she'd even seen, already given a new less than subtle nickname by the school's cheer coach, and subjected to some of the weirdest situations that could only happen on the pages of a child's fiction book. For example, the girl had been sitting in Geography class and pretending to jot down notes on things she had learned back in grade school.
Granted, she could understand they would be behind considering McKinley's current...reputation for financial cutbacks. But learning about the 50 states and where they were on the map wasn't really something she wanted to re-learn again. However, as she wrote squiguele a familiar flagrant voice suddenly came on through the intercom, and in a matter of seconds Aerin learned way too much about two teachers romantic sex life than she wished too.
As for friends, they had also been hard to come by as well, unfortunately. People weren't exactly the 'happy go-lucky' type at McKinley High, so that meant for the most part that she had to be the one to do all the talking; the one thing she couldn't do. But luckily that was where the guidance council came in, Emma Pillsbury. A warm, kind, soul who also had a severe case of OCD. And although most found her obsessively cleaning the same apple in all its crevices to be odd, Aerin understood how hard it was for people to cope. Her aunt Rischelle had OCD as well, she'd always turn the cooker switches at the same angle every day and almost every single night.
" I'm glad you could make it...uhm," Emma beamed, her tone heightened and smile forcefully beaming.
" Aerin Cline,"ย the blonde finished as she watched Emma's eyes nervously dart to the door then back at her again in a continuous motion. Emma let out an exasperated chuckle and softly took the blonde's hand to shake, "Of course,I knew that obviously. If I didn't that would've been very concerning on my part, since I'm supposed to be the head of our newfound welcoming committee as well as the guidance counselor. Which actually brings me to my next point," Emma rambled, whilst Aerin let go of her and somberly bit her lip from the surprisingly strong grip that she had.
" How have you been finding making friends? I know that it must be hard with the tedious amount of social groups and cliches that there are," Miss Pillsbury asked.
" A lot harder than I expected actually," Aerin responded, " I mean, I did talk to this one boy in the cafeteria lunch line. He was super nice and understanding, which surprised me considering the fact that he's on the football team..who are some of the biggest jerks i've ever had the misfortune to share airspace with."
Miss Pillsbury raised a brow, " Wait, my memory might be a little bit foggy but..don't you have a brother on the team, Atticus Cline?" she questioned under her breath.
Aerin sat back on her chair and let out a tired sigh, " My point exactly," she confirmed, her tone more sarcastic than usual.
Before Miss Pillsbury could vaguely reply, the door suddenly creaked open and a girl in a cheerleading uniform stepped. She was slim built and was more on the averagely tall side. Her gaze seemed warm and friendly, yet slightly timid and confused at the same time. But what drew Aerin's attention to the light blonde-haired cheerio the most were the two large leg warmers that she wore on her arms.
" Sorry for being late, I got lost in the janitors closet again," the girl mumbled as she adjusted the cat pin on her left. The furrow on Aerin's brow vastly deepened, and a tidal wave of confusion slapped her straight in the face, " They should really put signs on the doors, it would make getting around much easier."
" Well at least you're safe and sound now, Brittany," Miss Pillsbury nervously chuckled, her elbow accidentally bumping a straight line of pencils, much to her discomfort.
Brittany, it really suited her. Aerin had guessed her name to be something more off the nose like Lucy or bubblier like Emily.
Brittany moved to sit on the chair next to the Cline girl, " So, why am I here ? Mr Schue said I was doing community service..." the blonde's eyes suddenly shifted to Aerin's, "Is she my community service ?"
" No, uhm...this is Aerin, she's new and in need of somebody to show her around. Since you signed up to Principal Figgins new welcome committee, I thought that you could give her a special tour," Miss Pillsbury said as she straightened her pencils again in a single file line.
The furrow between Brittany's brows slightly deepened, a clear signal of her obvious confusion, " I thought the welcome committee was where you signed up to adopt foreign exchange students," the pearl blonde huffed in disappointed as she rested her chin on her knuckle, " I promised Lord Tubbington a new sibling, he's gonna be so disappointed."
Miss Pillsbury sent a forced smile towards the girl, " That's the forgein exchange program, we don't have one of those h-here," she stammered, her attention now collectively drawn towards her outside office window. Wanting to find out what the middle-aged guidance counselor was staring at, Aerin slyly craned her neck in the direction of where Emma's eyes were currently glued on. There stood another teacher in a tan sweater vest with a collar that was creased just below his neckline. He was pacing nervously outside her office with a pen that he constantly tapped on the base of his palm. It was then it dawned on the Cline - he was the voice behind that soppy drunken voice message, and Miss Pillsbury must've been his target for affection.
Once Emma had been finally snapped out of her subservient trans, and her cheeks began to flush from their duey rose colour; she continued on with trying to get the pair out the door. " You guys should start now before 2nd Period is over..which is in," the chestnut ginger quickly peered up at the clock. " 10 minutes, so you two should just go now ! there's a whole McKinley High world waiting out there too be explored...so go forth and explore it !" As she finished her a soft knock came from the door,ย and of course, the man who had been waiting oh so patiently stepped in.
" Hey Emms, do you have a minute ?" he murmured, completely disregarding the conversation that was currently going on.
" Sure, anything for you Will," Miss Pillsbury replied with a soft quiver and a smile that could only suggest the awkward tension that was slowly building up. Aerin felt herself slowly sinking into the soft cushions of her chair trying to hold back the questions that were fueling in her head about the exact nature of what was about to happen, and if she should slowly exit before things get even more intense.
The guidance counselor rose from her chair once she realised that Brittany and Aerin were still in the room, " Uhm, You two should really get going. Mr Schuester and I have to have a very important conversation, one that doesn't necessarily require you to be in the room anymore."
When Aerin turned back to Mr Schue, he was in the same precarious thorny state. The teacher sent his best attempt of a warm smile before responding with a mumbled ' Welcome to McKinley'. Once the two girls finally left the room, and Miss Pillsbury quickly rushed to slam the door shut, Brittany stood in the halls playing with her hand leg warmers, " They're so fluffy, and warm...kinda like the inside of a cat."
Choosing to swiftly ignore the tall blonde's odd comment for the sake of her self intelligence, Aerin decided to begin by asking Brittany the question that had been playing at her. " So, what's the deal with the Guidance Counselor and that other dude. Are they dating ? or are they like friends with benefits ?" she asked curiously whilst Brittany still played with her hand leg warmers.
" A bit of both actually," Brittany replied, eyes still focused on the minx fur that wrapped snugly around her. " I mean, he cheated on his wife with her, and then they totally had this whole will they won't they thing for so long. Oh, and Quinn told me that Mr Schue was the main reason for Miss Pillsbury never marrying Coach Tanaka, the old football coach. And then yesterday, he called her sexy through a drunk voice message. "
" Woah, that's alot," Aerin commented under her breath as the pair began to walk down the hallway. Though she had definitely heard her fair share of Teacher drama back at Carmel High, this had most definitely taken the prize for being more extreme. It seemed like everyone and everything was always falling apart throughout the day in this place, whether it was the sudden slushie attacks, the lack of teacher motivation or people suddenly deciding to regin havoc; it never stopped, another thing the Cline had slowly learned with her 24 hour experience of McKinley Hell.
"So, this is my chemistry class. My teacher is called Mr Novikov and he's real grumpy buzzkill. I leave him apples on his desk to turn his frown upside down and keep the dentist away too so he doesn't have to get a check-up," she then gripped onto Aerin's free hand and opened the door without warning.
A class was still in session and the aforementioned Mr Novikov had been in the middle of explaining the Atomic structure to a room full of bored students. Some fiddled with test tubes, others drew rather obscene images on their desk and a larger portion of the classroom had taken the time to either catch up the hours of sleep they missed or text other people.
" Brittany? What are you doing," Aerin whispered as she leaned towards the aloof girl, her cheeks splashed in pink once she realised all the eyes pointed at her direction, " This isn't exactly what Miss Pillsbury meant when she told you to give me a full tour of the school."
" Yeah, but I wasn't finished with 2nd Period yet, new girl," Brittany whispered back, her grip loosing and eventually releasing from Aerin's sweaty palm.ย " I already have 29 tardies in this class, and Principal Figgins said that if I get another he'll call my parents in for a meeting about my progress, and I simply can't let that happen."
" Why not ?" said Aerin through a low murmur tone, still reflecting the embarrassment that was corousing within her.
" Because, If I get 30 tardies, Coach Sylvester will kick me off the Cheerios-"
Suddenly, as if on unfortunate cue, the bell which signalled the end of 2nd Period rung out. Brittany's eyes widened once the realisation of her being grounded and booted off the cheerios hit. Letting out a disappointed sigh, she then accepted her undisclosed fate and turned towards her displeased Chemistry teacher whilst everyone started to leave. " Do you think he saw me ?" the blonde murmured, hands tucked in her Cheerios jacket pocket.
" Well, from his pissed off expression I'm vogueing on..yes," Aerin replied, patting the blonde's back in consolement. Brittany let out a glum sigh as she leaned up against the wall next to her desk, already accepting the long detention sentence that was awaiting her.
The Cline sought it best to just leave the girl and get on with her day, but it also dawned on her that she had nothing planned for the next two periods except for this so-called 'tour'. From this, the girl had now ultimately learned a third lesson of the day with her 24 hour experience of McKinley Hell.
Never get on Mr Noviok's bad sideย and try toย steer clear of Brittany's study notes in the future when needed.
As Aerin stood beside Brittany, aimlessly staring at the paper mache atoms dripped in fuchsia purple, a finger suddenly tapped her shoulder. She sharply looked behind her to meet the eyes of two faces, one which seeped of friendliness and another which was mildly agitated, most likely from something that had nothing to do with Aerin.
The girl on the left wore a sequin black beree on her head, it fitted well but on occasion it had the tendency to slip down whenever she turned to the side. Her shirt was white and doused in different jaguar patterns, whilst her trousers and hightop sneakers matched one another in a mink red colour.
The boy whose eyes were still glued to his phone had on the nicest scarf Aerin had ever seen in her life, even though it might've only been a cheap knock off from Ebay.
His assortment was mainly made up of dark blues and red, two colors that could only indicate the deep depth and compassion laid underneath. Aerin didn't know what to do with her hands when she turned, greeting first meant that she would be the one to start the conversation, one coming up with topics on the spot just wasn't on her forte. However, if she let one of the other two begin it would only make her seem shy and cold.
" Let me guess, you got Brittany as your official tour guide around the school ?"ย The raven haired girl asked with raised brows, a soft smile forming on her lips.ย Aerin sent a confused look to the girl, she had no clue whether that was a bad thing or a good thing, which made her stifle a response.
" Yeah, she was supposed to show me around the courtyard and where the fire assembly exits are apparently, according to this slip of paper," the blonde confirmed, turning to the side of her back to pull out a small pink slip and handing it to the girl. " Do you think I should just wait for her to finish, or should I-"
" Leave ? You should definitely do that,"ย the boy finally spoke up with a prolonged sigh, " If you stay then you'll most likely have to write lines with her, and then wipe the whiteboard until it's spotless. Trust me, after having to be her stand-in whilst she 'went to the bathroom' made me more cautious to exit quickly once Mr Novikov tells her to see him at his desk."
Aerin let out a flat chuckle, as did the girl and boy as well, but Aerin couldn't tell if they were truly being genuine or not. Once one last deep sigh escaped the cusp of the chestnut brunette's lips, she then made it a point of conversation to actually learn who these people were before she actually went away with them.
The Cline never liked to judge a book by it's cover, but they definitely didn't fit the whole stereotypically 'popular' mould that tv and other media outlets loved to glorify, " I don't mean to be rude, but who are you people? Are you another branch of the welcome committee that like rescues the new kids from mixing with the wrong crowd ?"
The curly haired girl let out a snort under breath at the insinuation before she moved towards Aerin to drape her arm over her shoulder. " Me ? Welcome Committee?" she said incisively, as the three headed towards the door to exit. " If I was part of the welcome committee, baby doll, then i'd telling you to pack your load and book a one way ticket out of this place before the people sink their conniving claws into you."
"I'm Mercedes, Mercedes Jones. My Friends call me 'Cedes, but my fans are gonna call me the Reincarnation of Beyonce in a few years from my god given vocals. And this is-"
" Kurt Hummel, local bully target and only openly gay kid at this dumpster fire of a school," the boy cut in, sardonic smile tracing at his lips. Aerin was hesitant to laugh, considering the fact that he had just brought up two very heavy subject topics about himself in the span of 0.3 seconds. However, once Kurt saw her sympathetically look at him he was quick to confirm that he was alot more than that. " I'm also here for you if you need anything, like fashion advice or how to make your MySpace look more fung shui and aesthetically pleasing."
" You know, I've actually been meaning to talk to someone about that," Aerin beamed as the boy warmly linked arms with her, and Mercedes followed suit. " Mine just has a pixilated photo of a football spread out like 20 times, and a couple of photos of my family and then some of Jesse, Lauren, Amber, Christopher and a bunch of other people that you obviously don't know-" the dirty blonde rambled, stopping once she noticed that the two were glacing at each other with an expression she was all to familiar with. The one that people usually gave whenever they found something odd, or someone, " I'm Aerin by the way, Aerin Cline"
"Hold up, did you say Jesse ?"ย Mercedes questioned once they left the class and unlatched from each other.
Aerin raised a brow, " Yeah...Jesse, we used to be close for some time until he moved to this school actually, to be with some girl named-"
" Rachel Berry," Kurt finished off with a bitter tone, crossing his arms.
"Yeah, that's the one. Her mom, or wait- her birth mom, was one of the coach's for our school's show choir team Vocal Adrenaline. They're really good, one of the best actually if I'm honest with you...I remember this one year when they totally wiped the floor clean with this one competing team from McKinley High," the Cline began, her smile growing wider with amusement whilst Kurt and Mercedes simoustanly faded to flattened ones. " One Direction ? 5 Directions ? I really can't remember their name. They sang this rendition of Faithfully by Journey and then after that, according to my friend Annalise, one of the girls on the team just randomly went into labour when they were about to perf-o-rm."
The last line of her sentence came out in a dysphoric splutter once realisation finally hit her in the head like a heavy ton boulder. At that moment, she recognized the two's faces from a recording of the competition on YouTube, and the other couple photos some of the kids at her school had printed and defaced later on. " You guys didn't happen to be on that team, did you ?" she muttered rather softly out of embarrassment, cheeks starting to burn.
" Be on? We're still on it," Mercedes corrected, which only heightened the Cline girl's impending embarrassment. When she caught sight of Aerin's eyes dragging to the floor nervously, she decided to brink her voice down to a more friendlier octave. " But, I know we'll bounce back eventually in time for Nationals. Even if it will take months of practice and having to put up with Rachel and Mr Schue's petty selves."
Before Aerin could respond the hall's serene nature was vastly interrupted by the bustling bandaging and loud voices of everyone flooding in many groups. And though Aerin had very much enjoyed getting to know Kurt and Mercedes, one on one, she was also ready to have some one-on -one time with herself for a bit, " Hey, I think I'm gonna be heading out now. I said that I'd meet my brother up at his locker so he could give me some of his stuff for AP Calculus."
"You have a sibling who goes here ?" Kurt questioned in an inquisitive tone, " What's his name ?"
"At-Atlas, his name is Atlas and he's in the AV Club,"ย Aerin responded with a stutter once she realised the impact mentioning Atticus would have on her blossoming friendship. "Yeah we're twins, but we look nothing alike. Like at all, so don't try and search for him because it'll probably be real trick-y," she spurted again, cursing internally at herself for not coming up with a better name.
" Oh, wow, that's a unique name," Kurt responded, tightening his satchel strap.
"Anyways," Mercedes said, taking in a sharp intake of breath, " I was thinking that we could meet at the Bean after school today, just so we can get to know each other better. You're a lot more chill than I thought."
Chill. the word universally known in any teenage dictionary to describe something that they liked, that they loved, that was cool. That meant you were definitely in a person's good books
"Thank you," Aerin smiled half-heartedly, fist slightly balling from annoyance out of the answers she'd, unfortunately, have to give. " But, I can't. I have to pick up Lennon from my Mom at the Department Store since I promised her that I'd babysit."
Kurt let out a chuckle, " What? Is she like your mom's pet Pomeranian ?" he chortled light heartedly.
" No," said Aerin with a voice that could only describe all the pain that came with having to tell people the truth about her predicament, "She's actually my 3 year old daughter. However, Lennon does radiate major Pomeranian esk vibes."
Aerin waited patiently for their reply, but surprisingly, the pair had actually both taken it really well. They didn't knit their brows together and pucker their lips awkwardly like most people did whenever she mentioned her daughter for the first time, nor did they ask obscene and rather offensive questions about 'how it feels like to be lumbered with a kid' or 'did you ever try and apply to get on sixteen and pregnant? (to name a few).
However, after their more so passive sweet comments subsided, the two wasted no time to give her the contacts to one of their Glee Club friends, who just so happened to be head cheerleaders, old help group for struggling teen moms. And with that, she subconsciously learned her fourth and hopefully final lesson from her 24-hour experience of McKinley Hell.
Never overshare, because it'll come back to bite you right in the ass when you least expect it too
