HIS MOTHER was about to search into her lilac purse when her son suddenly pushed the door open.

"Mama! It's open!"

"Open?" Mary mused, eyebrows knitting in confusion. "Why isn't that strange, Paulie?"

The eight year old boy shrugged his shoulders and continued eating the lolly his mother just bought him from the candy store. They stepped inside, her eyes growing wide when both of them heard loud thumping sounds. Paul watched as his mother's face fell.

"Oh my god." She let go of her son's hand and dashed upstairs, leaving the poor boy alone in the living room. "Oh my god! Jim!"

"Mary?! Oh fu---"

Paul's little legs moved quickly up the flight of stairs that led to the bedrooms.

"How could you?"

The boy shrank back, flinching at how shrill his mother's voice sounded. Her voice raised and Paul heard another woman's voice chime in.

Mary's face grew bright red with anger. "I am his wife, you disgusting whore!"

"That's enough!" Jim shouted, voice ringing in Paul's ears. He never shouted before.

The boy could only stand back and watch from the ajar door, the adults unbeknownst to the damage that was imprinted on Paul's psyche.

"Mum are you.. okay?" Paul asked, hand reaching to rub her shoulders.

She was sniffling, salty tears running down her pale, gaunt cheeks. Jack Daniels sat nearby with only a quarter left.

"Look what he done to me, Paulie." She sobbed, her cries piercing Paul's heart. "If he hadn't slept with that disgusting whore..."

Paul's broken mind didn't bother to catch the rest of what his mother said. Whore. Whore. The word used to be so strange to him but now it reminded of pain in his mother's heart. She broke her apart, took her husband--- his father--- away from them. And because of that, she was now happy fucking him whilst his mother drowned herself in booze.

If he hadn't slept with that disgusting whore...

"Don't worry about her, mum." He pressed a soft, tender kiss to his mother's cheek. "I'll take care of her."
