03 | the coloured hair crew
Dick had found a barn for them to show off in. He wanted to know their moves, telling them it was vital for him and others to know. "Okay. In order to work together, fight and defend yourselves like a coordinated team, we gotta see what each other can do." He stared at the four. "Any volunteers?"
The teenagers avoided Dicks eyes.
Eleanor and Gar had turned to look at the walls whilst Rachel looked over at the other three with powers (and colourful hair).
Eleanor was amazed that she and Kory had similar shades of hair, she had decided that for that reason the older woman was the best person in the whole world. So yes, Eleanor bad decided she was the founder of the Kory fan-club.
"Kory," Dick decided, coming to the conclusion that it was best to go in age order, "Rachel said you can create light, heat. Is that right?"
"Honestly, I'm still trying to figure it out."
"Okay, let's figure it out together. How exactly does it work?"
"I think it comes from the sun. I can absorb its power and direct it." Explained Kory, with the help of hand gestures. "I'm weaker at night, though. Sometimes empty, and it takes me a while to recharge."
"How long?"
"Few hours, a day? I don't know."
Gar and Eleanor watched Kory in amazement before she had even begun to show off.
"Can you control it?"
"Of course."
Eleanor had decided that Kory was her new role model, the woman was amazing and beautiful and had a similar hair colour as her. Mainly it was the hair selling it to her.
"Okay." Dick turned around before pointing at a tractor. "Could you hit that tractor?"
Kory looked at and gave a tiny nod. "Watch." She told them, stepping forward. Red light took over her body and hair, before fire shot from her hands and decimated the hole near the tractor. "Suppose I could use a bit of practice." She said, stepping back into place.
"Sick!" Gar laughed, holding his hand out.
The magenta haired woman high-fived him, burning him a little.
Dick turned to Eleanor, who had been hoping he'd not notice her, forgotten her or she's unwillingly turned invisible. "Eleanor."
Eleanor let out a huff. "Dick." She muttered in response. She wasn't too sure if she was insulting him or using his name — she supposed it was a bit of both . . . it was always a bit of both.
Dick got that, finding amusement in it as well as her worried look. "What can you do? Is it just teleporting?"
She teleported to where Kory had stood (before she had shot a beam of fire from her hand, like a true goddess) and shook her head. "There are a few things, actually, and none of them are what you expect."
"No mind control then?"
"Nada. Still very offended by that and the sexist ways of the Shelby genes."
"Can you control them?"
"Yes, yes, basically . . . not really but it kicks in when I'm in danger." She told him, her arms wrapped around her waist. Her leather jacket had been left at the motel, leaving her in her white turtle neck and velvet dress.
"What can you do?"
"Teleportation, levitation, invisibility and intangibility." She listed, nodding slightly. "Uh, do you have a knife?"
"No."
"Do you have something you can throw at me?"
"I always have something to throw at you."
Eleanor batted her eyelashes at him. "Is brotherly love and affection."
"No."
"Lame, throw it at me, hard and you can aim at my head or chest, I literally don't care." She told him, leaning to one side as she studied him.
Dick nodded slowly, grabbing his room key from his pocket. He decided to go with something small just in case. He threw it at the teenager and watched it go through her.
She was unbothered by it as she turned and picked up the key. Eleanor appeared right in front of him and put it in his hand.
"Do I have to do the other two?"
"Yes."
She groaned. Eleanor placed his hand on her shoulder, before completely disappearing. However invisibility didn't last all that long, not by choice, Eleanor just wasn't use to
being invisible or controlling it. She was little to never invisible.
"I don't really use that one, so I can do it at will but I'm not used to holding it or doing it particularly well."
"We can work on that," Dick promised her, taking his hand off her shoulder and stuffing it back into his pockets. "And the last one?"
Eleanor stepped back a little, closing her eyes. She soon felt the lack of floor under her feet. She opened her eyes, tilted her head and looked at Dick with a brow raised.
She let herself touch the floor again and appeared next to Gar. "Tag, you're it." She whispered, placing her hand on his shoulder.
"Wait," Dick told Gar, his attention still on the bright pink haired teen. "Can you mix them?"
"Intangibility works with any but other than that, no."
"We can work with that, but since when was this a thing?"
"Two years ago." She shrugged, running her hand through her bright hair. "When I woke from a coma . . . well that was a year ago but due to the events of two years ago."
He nodded, turning his attention to the younger teen next to Eleanor. "Your turn."
"Okay. I just, uh, give me a second." He rushed over to where both Eleanor and Kory had started when showing off. He cracked his neck, letting out a deep breath. "Okay."
"Anytime today would be good."
"It's, uh, you know, it's a little weird with you guys watching and all. The first time I transformed, I tore through my clothes and, uh."
Rachel chuckled whilst Eleanor screwed her face up.
"I don't . . . this is my favourite jacket."
"Hold on," Dick spoke. "You have to be naked too?"
"Yeah, but it'll be worth it. I promise."
"Heard that before."
Eleanor let out a snort, grinning at the woman when she turned and gave her an amused smile.
"Just, uh, turn around."
The coloured haired girls and the natural haired man turned around and waited.
"If this wasn't a drill, we'd all be dead by now."
"You maybe, I can't seem to die." Eleanor shrugged, going to shove her hands into her pockets, before realising she had no pockets. Dick and Kory stared at the girl in worry, as she hadn't realised what she said. Eleanor's eyes widened as she realised the truth her words had hinted to. "Not that I've, uh, tried or anything, well totally not outside of that one time."
Luckily for her, the green tiger roared. They turned around to see him come out from behind the hay.
"Oh, shit!" Dick let out, coming to stand next to Kory.
Kory chuckled. "What do you know? It was worth it."
"That's him?"
"I know, right?"
"How?"
"He got sick of something."
"The flu turned him into a tiger?" Kory asked.
"He had a disease, the Chief saved him like he had saved the rest of us. The side effects had made him into that."
"Okay, you can turn back now, into Gar."
And so he had.
Eleanor had covered her eyes automatically.
"Ta-da."
"Proceeds to be naked in front of everyone," Eleanor spoke, still not looking.
"Huh?"
"You, Gar, I'm on about you."
A nervous sound left his mouth. "Oh, yeah. I forgot." He went away to get changed.
Eleanor removed her hands at the sound of his jacket zipping up.
"So, have you eaten anyone before?"
Gar scoffed. "Eaten? No. Dude, I haven't even bitten anymore before." He said, coming to stand between Kory and Eleanor. "Eaten anyone." He chuckled.
"Be a lot scarier if he wasn't green or vegan."
"I don't know, Dick seemed terrified." Eleanor pointed out, fisting bumping Gar.
"Was not."
"Totally was."
"Not!"
"Was!"
"I was not."
"Completely and utterly terrified."
Dick narrowed his eyes on the teenager, she argued like someone they use to know. When he had been a teenager and raised by Bruce, when he had been (maybe a little more than) best friends with the Shelby boy. Eleanor Shelby reminded him of Nathan Shelby.
Dick rolled his eyes, deciding to stop the arguing. Before he pointed between the three. "So we have Sun Woman, Cheshire Cat and Tiger Boy. There's definitely potential here."
Soon enough they moved on to Rachel, despite her protests. The moment was tense, and Eleanors instinct to push Gar behind her had kicked in the second Rachel seemed a little too out of control.
She pushed him behind her as Kory brought the situation down. The blackness went back into Rachel before the girl dropped to the ground.
"Rachel!"
"Stay back." She said in her demonic tone, soon enough she turned around. "I'm fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Did I hurt you?"
"I just need a little more practice." Rachel stuttered out, afraid of herself and the pain and grief she could cause. "That's all."
Eleanor sighed, appearing in front of the teenager. She wrapped her arms around the fourteen-year-old and held her close.
Rachel froze at first, not wanting to touch the eighteen-year-old in case she hurt her.
Eleanor didn't let go. "Hey, you can't hurt me, okay? My whole thing is surviving." She promised, her tone soft and gentle, soothing Rachel's worry.
Rachel wrapped her arms around Eleanor, bury her head into her neck as she searched for safety. "Thank you." She mumbled, her grip tightening.
Eleanor nodded, placing her head on top of the girl with blue highlights. "Don't worry about it, I've appointed myself your older sister, as well." She promised leaning back, her arms loosely around the younger one.
Rachel moved to look at Eleanor, a smile on her face. "Why?"
Eleanor shrugged as they become undone, their hug no longer a thing. "Because everyone needs a family, even if it isn't a real one."
Eleanor and Rachel turned back to the others, standing side to side.
"So, uh, we all did our thing," Gar spoke, pushing past the silence that had fallen heavily upon them. "What's your thing, man?" He asked as they all looked at Dick.
"I can keep you alive."
"Is that all, Dickie-bird?" Eleanor questioned, her head tilted and a teasing eyebrow raised.
