Sick Day
This one shot is a conclusion to my very first one shot of Mac x Ruby, in which Mac becomes really sick and texts Goo to come over and help him, along with the rest of his friends, but due to his fever, he accidentally texts someone he helped in the past, he at first was nervous, but the person took this opportunity to repay him for the kind favor he did for them.
Mac P.O.V:
It was a cold autumn Saturday today, it was the start of a three day weekend for all of the students in the collage I go to, but, this morning when I woke up, I felt myself becoming tired despite going to bed at nine pm, and my throat was really dry, I tried drinking some water to help my throat a bit, while it helped a little bit, it was still sore, and the strangest thing is that I felt so cold that I started shivering.
I used a thermometer to check my temperature and saw that my temperature was ninty nine point nine, meaning I must've caught a cold or a small fever.
I figured my best option was to drink plenty of water and get as much rest as possible, I grabbed my phone and called my friend Goo, to let her know that I was feeling sick today.
"Wait, you're sick!?" Goo asked on the phone as she was surprised. "You need me to come over there to take care of you!?"
"Aw, it's okay, I'm fine right now, I just have a small fever." I explained while my voice was a little raspy. "I'll be feeling better in no time."
"If you say so, I'll let the others at Foster's know that you'll be absent." Goo explained on the phone. "Call or text me if you need anything."
Soon after Goo hang up, I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, just in case if my throat were to become dry and lay on my bed to get some rest, while also having the covers over me.
As time past, I thought things were gonna get better and that my fever would almost be over, I was unfortunately proven wrong, not only did my throat become more sore, but I started coughing frequently, I had a bad headache, my vision was a bit blurry, I didn't have that much energy to move and I felt as if I was slowly dying because of how tired and sick I was.
I used the thermometer again and saw that my temperature has now reached up to about a hundred and two degrees. "Seems like I overestimated my fever..." I said as my voice was completely raspy. "I need to drink."
I grabbed the water bottle next to me and was about to take another drink, but saw that my water bottle was now completely empty, this was not good. I tried to get up to grab another water bottle, but I couldn't get myself to move.
"This was worse than I thought..." I said as I knew that if I didn't do something, I would likely continue to be thirsty or get worse. "Better text Goo and let her know."
I then got my phone, my vision was a little blurry but I was able to send a text message to Goo to let her know that my fever has gotten worse and that I'll need her to come over and help me.
After waiting for what looked to be nine minutes, I heard the doorbell rang, meaning that Goo might've already arrived, it was hard for me to get out of bed my bed because of my fever, but I managed to get enough strength to leave my room and make my way to the door, every step that I took felt like I was on the verge of collapsing.
"Come on legs...don't give up on me now..." I said to myself as I finally reached the door, unlocked it and opened it. "Thank goodness you made—"
Before I could continue talking, I fully opened my eyes and was shocked to see what was in front of me, at my doorstep was not Goo or any of my other friends from Foster's, but that of a certain red haired woman named Ruby, a woman I met during the summer and have made friends with, we haven't seen each other much, but we still call or text each other.
"R-Ruby? What are you doing here?" I asked in surprise.
"Well, I got your text saying that you were really sick and wanted to check and see if you were alright." Ruby explained to me.
I was now confused, I only remembered telling Goo that I was sick, I checked my phone with the same text message I sent to Goo, only to realize that the message was sent to Ruby instead of Goo.
'Ah crap! I sent the text to Ruby instead of Goo!' I thought to myself as I was shocked and nervous at the same time, I then looked up at Ruby. "S-Sorry, I was meant to send that text to someone else, you don't have to..."
My legs couldn't take it anymore as then collapsed onto the ground. "Mac! Are you okay!?" Ruby asked as she was worried, she then touched my forehead and became more worried. "Oh no! You're burning up!! We have to get you in bed now!!"
Ruby was then able to help me get to my room and I was able to get onto bed and rest, after Ruby gave me some medicine for my fever, I was able to feel a little bit better, but I still felt terrible because of my sore throat, headache and being a little cold.
I was in my room alone while Ruby was in the kitchen, as I was in bed, I was left feeling nervous. I honestly didn't expect Ruby to come back to my apartment after that one rainy night during the summer, it was admittedly nice to see her again, but I didn't think we would be in my apartment together again on a day that I was sick.
I felt a little ashamed of myself for texting Ruby on accident because I felt I was interrupting whatever it was that she was doing, and it was likely that I made her waste her time coming here.
Just then, the door to my room opened as Ruby then came with a cup of herbal tea in her hand. "Good afternoon, Mac." Ruby said as she then sat down to a chair and scooted it towards me. "How are you feeling?"
"A little better, my throat still hurts and I have a bit of a headache, but I'm good." I said to Ruby.
"Here, I made you some herbal tea with honey." Ruby said as she gave me the mug of tea. "It's a little hot, but it should help with your sore throat."
As I blew on the tea, I then took a sip of the tea, it felt sweet and warm, and it felt like my throat was starting to feel better than before, which made me smile a bit.
"Thanks." I said as my voice was a little less raspy.
"No problem, are you able to eat?" Ruby asked. "If you're hungry, I could go to the kitchen and make you something."
"Uh, sure, I can eat." I said politely.
"Great, I'll be right back." Ruby said as she then got up and went to the kitchen.
Meanwhile, I was still in my room drinking the rest of the herbal tea that Ruby made for me to help my throat, after a while, Ruby arrived back to my room with a bowl of chicken noodle soup.
"I made some chicken noodle soup." Ruby said as she smiled. "Would you like some?"
"Oh, sure." I said as Ruby then sat down and used a spoon to scoop some of the soup. "Now, say Ah..."
Ruby was about to feed me the spoon full of soup, but I immediately felt sheepish and blushed madly, it was as if Ruby was my mom and she was trying to feed me, which caused me to back away a bit.
"H-Hang on a sec!" I said I was madly blushing and back away a bit, Ruby stopped for sec and then looked away while being a little shy.
"S-Sorry, I didn't know what came over me." Ruby said as she looked away, still holding the spoon that was full of soup.
"I-It's okay." I said as I apologized to Ruby. "I was just surprised that's all."
Then grabbed the spoon that was full of chicken noodle soup and took a bite, I was a bit neutral when it comes to chicken noodle soup, but when I ate the soup Ruby made, the taste felt so delicious and warm, it was as if my tongue had a lot of flavor on it.
"Wow, this is delicious." I said in shock as then then continued to eat the soup, I then finished and noticed that Ruby was smiling at me, I immediately felt myself blushing because of how cute Ruby looked when she smiled. "Th-Thank you for the meal.."
"It's not problem." Ruby said as she then took the empty bowl of soup from my hands.
I then took a sigh as I then looked down. "I uh, want to apologize to you, I was thankful that you came to help me, but I still felt ashamed when I sent you that text about me being sick, when it was supposed to be for someone else." I explained as I frowned and feeling ashamed. "I'm sorry that I interrupted on whatever you were doing, and I probably wasted some of your time by telling you I was sick..."
"N-No of course not, you didn't waste my time or interrupted anything I was doing..." Ruby said as she still smiled. "In fact, I was actually thankful that I took care of you."
"Really?" I asked as I was surprised.
"Yeah, I was really touched by how you let me in and helped me during that rainy day during the summer, I mean, no one's ever done something so kind for me." Ruby said as she smiled sweetly. "So, after I found out you were sick, I thought that taking care of you would be a way for me to repay your for your kindness, so, I humbly thank you."
I then felt my heart beating nonstop and was astonished, I never thought that after all I did for Ruby, she would repay me by taking care of me while I was sick, and when I saw her smile again, it was more beautiful than any of the other smiles she gave to me in the past, which caused me to blush red.
"Gee, that's all too much..." I said shyly as I was then able to smile back. "Thanks...and you're welcome."
Ruby's P.O.V:
After I was able to serve Mac some herbal tea and chicken noodle soup, I was cleaning the dishes and putting them away in the dishwasher, after that was done, I went to visit Mac again in his room.
When I saw him, I saw that he was fast asleep, seeing how the covers looked a little uneven, I went over to fix them and put them over Mac to help warm up, while also place a small wet towel over his head to cool his temperature, which caused Mac to smile he was still sleeping.
I wasn't gonna lie, I was starting to feel myself blushing when I saw Mac's smile, he was honestly kind of cute when he was sleeping. "Sweet dreams, darling..." I said to Mac as I wished him well, I then felt myself becoming embarrassed, I can't believe I called Mac darling despite just meeting him during a rainy day at summer.
Suddenly, I heard the front door opening and the sound of another voice. "Hey Mac! You doing okay!?" A voice of a woman asked. "You were quiet for a while and I thought that maybe your fever might've gotten worse, so I came over to help you."
Then, the door to Mac's room opened as coming in was another woman with three buns in her hair and dark skin came in, judging by how she knows Mac, she must be one of Mac's friends.
"Oh, there you are Mac." The woman said with a smile but then noticed me. "Oh hello, I'm Goo Goo Ga Ga, but you can call me Goo for short, I take it you must be Ruby?"
I was then surprised, I had no idea how the woman, now known as Goo, was able to know my name. "How do you know my name?" I asked with surprise.
"Mac started talking to me about you during the summer, like how you met him on a rainy day, and how he thinks your red hair is pretty." Goo said as she smiled.
I then felt myself blushing, I knew I get compliments about my hair but I didn't someone like Mac would think that it was pretty. "I'm really flattered." I said while looking away, I then turned to Goo. "So, I take it you're a good friend to Mac?"
"Yup, he and I go way back to when we were kids." Goo explained to me as she sat down next to me with another chair. "We always used to play together at this foster home for imaginary friends, our friendship had a little rocky start, but we eventually became really great friends."
"Oh, how wonderful." I said as I smiled, then I started to wonder about something. "So...do you happen to also be Mac's girlfriend?"
Goo then looked shock, I then put both my hands on my mouth, it felt so stupid of me to ask that, why did I ever ask that question? What on earth was I thinking?
"S-Sorry, I j-just thought that since you and Mac seem to be close, you might've been in a relationship with him." I said as I apologized.
"Oh no, it's okay, I understand." Goo said as she reassured me while smiling. "Me and Mac are just friends, I'm already in a relationship with someone else."
"Oh, you are?" I asked as I was surprised.
"Yup, me and my boyfriend have been together for two years." Goo said as she smiled, and then gave a smirk. "Though I'm curious as to why asked if Mac has a girlfriend? Is it because, you might like him?"
I felt myself turning as red as a tomato when Goo asked that. "Uh, well I...." I said as I tried to find an answer to Goo's question, I mean, I admittedly like Mac, but I didn't think that I liked liked him. "Maybe?"
"No worries, your secret is safe with me." Goo whispered to me as she smirked. "And by how you helped Mac, I have a feeling that you and him will be more than just friends, sooner or later."
My blushing then eased down as I then smiled at Goo. "Thanks Goo." I said as I was thankful.
So during the rest of the day, me and Goo stayed at Mac's apartment to see if he needed anything, and he was slowly starting to recover from his fever, it felt really great to help Mac and repay him for all the kindness he did for me, maybe, when the time comes, he and I will become closer, and possibly be more than just neighbors or friends...
(Hey guys, hope you enjoyed part 2, now, for my one shot book, I'm thinking of making more one shots that focused more on the other versions of Mac X Ruby, such as the genderbent version, the lesbian version and the yaoi version, let me know if you have ideas for three of those versions and I'll see you soon.)
