Chapter 61: The End is Near
Mabel, Dipper and I waited as the trucks rolled by, then we quickly jumped into the back of one of them.
It drove right to the Mystery Shack. Before anyone noticed, we slipped out of the trunk and hid in the grass. "Okay," Mabel said. "Here's what we're going to do. I'll take down those two guards. Dipper, you and Kayla karate chop those three in the neck and we'll backflip through the front door."
Dipper and I glanced at each other. "Um, Mabel. I think you're missing the obvious solution," Dipper said.
"Oh, right," Mabel said. She reached into her sleeve and took out the grapling hook.
"You've had that the whole time?" I asked.
Mabel shugged. "I couldn't reach it when we where kidnapped last time. Then I just sort of forgot about it."
"Nevermind," I said. "So how are we going to get in by that?"
Dipper pointed to a tree. "How's your climbing?"
~
The hook of the grapling hook hit its mark on the broken window. We had found sturdy branches to use as handles so we could easily glide across the cord of the graping hook. Dipper went first, then Mabel, but when it was my turn, I didn't make it all the way. My branch snapped and I fell to the ground.
"Kayla!" Mabel scream whispered.
'Go!' I mouthed. 'I'll distract them!'
Mabel and Dipper disapeared just as the government guys got to me. "Hey!" One yelled. "Isn't that one of the kids that we were bringing to child services?"
I crossed my arms and stood up. "Who says I'm a Pines?"
"Well..."
"I am a Surrett, fyi! My parents dropped me off here, so you can't take me anywhere."
"We can take you back to your parents."
"Oh I don't think so," I said. A time where my dream demon powers might actually come in handy. I put my hand in front of me, trying not to aim at anyone and shot a fireball.
Like I hoped, it didn't hit anyone, but I did surprise them. No one wanted to come near me. Bad news, they had the guns out. "No, wait!" I said. "You don't understand! I'm being possesed by this demon so I can't control what I'm doing!" I couldn't believe I was lying to the government.
"What does that do with anything?" A guy asked.
"If you kill me, you'll unleash the demon inside and kill an inocent little girl." Another fireball shot out from my hands.
The guy I aimed at ducked and the fire just went over his head.
"Oops," I said.
Something stirred deep inside me. Whatever crazyness I had inside, it was yelling to escape. I wouldn't let it. Who knows what I'd do if that happened.
"Stand down, demon," one of the guys said.
I shook my head with a smirk. "If you want me, you've gotta go through her."
A gun went off, by the sound of it, a stun gun. I never really got the chance to see, because, maybe its just a super dream demon power thing, but I intersected the blast with a fireball. I crossed my arms. "So you wanna place nice, eh? Well I don't." Some sort of atomic engergy built up in my hands. I let it go.
The force on the energy made all the men fly back and pass out. I stared down at me hands. What the heck?
I didn't have time to ponder my newly found abilities. I jumped over the nearest guy and ran into the Mystery Shack.
It was strangly dark in there. My eyes had to get used to the dim light. Where had Mabel and Dipper gone? I needed to tell them. It was now or never.
I soon found myself in the giftshop. An idea came to me. Maybe I could slip down to Stan's lab and shut the machine down before it could do much damage. Before I got there however, someone crawled through the window. Soos. He placed himself in front of the vending machine. Before I could make my way over there, Mabel and Dipper made their way into the gift shot too. "Soos!" Dipper said. "We need to get to the vending machine."
"No way," Soos said. "Stan told me to guard it with my life. Wow, and I thought I loved snacks."
"You don't understand!" Dipper said. "Stan's hiding something."
"I don't know dudes," Soos said. "Stan gave me specific orders."
Mabel sighed. "I wish it hadn't come to this." She reached into her pocket and took out a handful of... was that glitter? She blew it in Soos' face. "Agh!" Soos said. "Attack glitter! Its pretty, but it hurts!"
Mabel and Dipper ran into him. Soos held them back. I didn't try to help them, for fear of my powers going haywire. "Aw, I don't want to fight you guys," Soos said, holding Mabel and Dipper back. "This hurts me more then it hurts you!" Mabel kicked him in the face. "It hurts me way more then it hurts you."
I was about to slip in there and type in the code myself, but Dipper got there first. After he put in the code, the vending machine opened and the three of them flew back.
On top of me.
I pushed my way out and rubbed my head. Well, I guess they knew now. The others got up slowly. "What?"
Soos went in first, then Mabel, then Dipper and finally me. I sighed quietly. Why hadn't I just said something before?
We got to the lab. "What is this place?" Soos asked.
"It looks just like that bunker in the woods," Dipper said.
"Okay," Mabel said. "So he has a huge lab! That doesn't mean anything bad! Everyone has secrets!" It sounded like she was trying to convince herself. She picked up a picture of herself and Dipper being goofy in front of the camera. "Its still Stan and he loves us!"
Dipper wasn't paying attention to her anymore. "No. It can't be," he said. He was looking at the journals on the desk. "The other two journals?"
"Maybe he's the author," Soos suggested.
"Or maybe he stole them from the author," Dipper said. "Maybe he is the master criminal and this is his master plan!" He gestured to the machine. He kicked a file cabnet. "Was anything he said to us real?!" (I relized I kinda flipped this part around, but I'm too lazy to fix it). Dipper took the journals and opened them to four pages that looked similar. He took out his blacklight and shinned it on the pages. He gasped, along with everyone else.
"I was wrong," Dipper read out of the journals. "This machine was meant to create knowlege, but it has become too powerful. Never let it fall into the wrong hands. If the clock ever reaches zero, it could have the power to rip our universe apart!"
We glanced up at the clock. It now said 00:01:29.
"Its the final countdown!" Soos said. "Just like they always sang about!"
"We have to shut it down!" Dipper said. He flipped through the journal. It showed three keys. "We have to turn these at the same time!"
The three ran over to a table with three keys sticking out of it. "On three. One, two, three!"
They all turned them and a glowing red button apeared. I ran over to it with the others right behind me.
I was about to press it when someone shouted, "Don't press that button!"
I paused and we all turned to see Stan. He was breathing heavily.
"Please!" Stan said. "You have to trust me!"
"And I should trust you, why?" Dipper asked. "After you stole toxic waste? After you lied to us all summer? I don't know who you are anymore!"
"Please, Dipper, you have to listen to me. Whatever you do, don't press that button."
Suddenly, everything lost gravity. Things where floating everywhere. I grabbed onto a pipe in the wall.
"Dipper!" Mabel called. She pointed to the button.
"Shut it down!" He called.
"No!" Stan called. He tried to make his way over to her, but Soos attacked him. "I'm sorry Mr, Pines, if that is your name."
"I gave you a direct order!"
"I have a new mission now. Protecting these kids!"
Dipper launched himself too, one to get grabbed by Stan. "Let go of me!" I launched myself too. We where a big pile of flailing arms and legs. "Mabel shut it down!"
We heard a sniffle. We where surprised to see tears coming out of Mabel's eyes. "Grunkle Stan...I want to believe you..."
We where thrown back against the wall.
"Mabel," Stan said. "Do you really think I'm a bad guy?"
"He's lying!" Dipper yelled. "Shut it down!"
Mabel looked from Dipper to Stan. She swollowed. "Grunkle Stan..." she let go of the pedistal. "I trust you."
The timer went down to zero and there was a flash light.
Gravity came back and everyone fell to the ground.
Dipper sat up rubbing his head.
The machine was broken but something came out of it. A man.
"What? Who...?" Dipper looked lost for words.
"The author of the journals," Stan said. "My brother."
