Chapter 22: Rescue

"So, who is this girl in the 104th?" Hange asked as you were all gearing back up to head out immediately.

"She's the smallest of us all. Gold hair, blue eyes, and she's like some cute puppy who wandered into the wrong side of the town which is the Survey Corps. More than anything though..." You said while throwing your cloak around securing it to yourself as you turned back to Hange. "She's always hanging around with Ymir, another member of the 104th." You said as you were about to leave to head to the lifts on the wall, but everyone was stopped by Hange.

"Wait!" Hange called out as everyone froze in their place.

"What's wrong, Section Commander?" Eren asked as you all walked back towards her as Hange looked down at the report in her hands.

"Oh, well...I was finally able to get my hands on the background report for Annie Leonhart." The moment Hange said her name, you tensed up a bit as you averted your gaze to the ground.

"Annie's?" Eren asked as this piqued everyone's interest.

"Yeah. It's taken so long to get it because managing these reports is such a mess right now. According to this, there were two others belonging to the 104th Cadet Corps who came from the same area as her." Hange mentioned as you turned towards her with a raised brow in confusion of what this had to with the situation. "And those two are...Reiner Braun...and Bertolt Hoover." She announced the names of your two dear comrades as you felt the atmosphere suddenly become heavy in the room. "Thanks to the chaos five years ago, pretty much all of their family records are spotty or missing. However..." Hange shuffled the report around before placing it down on the table in the center. "During the long-range scouting formation, their unit was given false information. They were among those purposely told that Eren was in the right wing." Hange spoke of the false information given to those two.

"The Female Titan attacked from the right wing!" Armin spoke as you this was beginning to make you uneasy.

"Huh? What does that mean?" Sasha asked in confusion.

"That it's possible they passed on that information to Annie..." Armin said as you turned towards him with a questioning look.

"You can't be serious. Why the hell would they do that? Besides, they barely interacted with one another and went to different branches of the military. I doubt they stayed in touch." You tried give reasoning to make it sound like a coincidence.

"Why? Why would they tell Annie?" Sasha asked again in confusion.

"Hey, hold on a minute, Armin. You can't just--!" Eren was cut off when the section commander spoke up.

"I know that, Eren. By itself, that's not enough to prove anything. So just in case, I'd like to hear from you how these three interacted during training. Know anything?" Hange asked all of you from the 104th as you pondered memories from the days of training.

"I know Reiner and Bertolt were from the same place, but...they didn't seem close to Annie." Armin gave his claims on the interactions between the three.

"I agree. I don't recall ever seeing the pair talking to Annie that much. Well, Annie didn't talk much in the first place." Eren gave his thoughts of the times in training.

"When we ate, Annie would always sit alone and munch on food by herself. Oh, I've got something! I heard a rumor she liked sweets, even though she looks so grouchy!" Sasha claimed as everyone looked at her strangely.

"Sasha...I don't think we needed that last bit..." You said awkwardly as she just looked at you in confusion.

"I...don't remember." Mikasa simply stated.

"But...As their comrade, I find it hard to believe. Set aside Bertolt, who doesn't say much. Reiner is like the second eldest brother to everyone after Y/N and isn't devious enough to deceive all of us." Eren defended their cases.

"I agree. Reiner gave everything he had fighting the Female Titan with me. He would have gotten crushed in her hand if he hadn't--!" Armin suddenly grew a nervous look as you looked at him in worry.

"If he hadn't...what?" You asked while taking a step closer to him.

"What's wrong?" Eren asked as you all stared at him.

"Reiner managed to escape, but...Annie suddenly changed her course...and ran in the direction of Eren. I...I did mention that Eren might be at the rear of the center rank. But Annie was too far away to hear..." Armin explained the situation they were in at the time.

"Did Reiner seem overly interested in Eren's location?" Hange asked as Armin had a look of realization when he remembered.

"Then...Where the hell is Eren?" Those words echoed in Armin's head as he remembered Reiner sounding extremely pressed for something.

"It can't be..." Armin remembered how Reiner had managed to cut himself free from Annie's hand. "I only started talking about Eren's position...because Reiner was the one who asked about it first." Armin said as your brow furrowed and your teeth clenched together from the now pieced together truth. "Furthermore...when that happened, the Female Titan was staring at her palm. He might have written a message with his blades in her hand. Reiner could've..." Armin trailed off as the image of you and Reiner being friendly to each other, burned to a crisp in your memories.

"Reiner...Bertolt...both of you, too..?" You thought as an intimidating look fell upon your face.

"What the hell? Why are you saying things like this? You should--!" Eren was cut off once again by the section commander.

"Eren!" Hange stopped him before looking around at everyone. "No...Everyone, listen up! Supposing that we find Reiner or Bertolt, act in such a way as to not reveal any suspicions. Of course, do not make any mention of Annie Leonhart either. Regardless if they're Annie's accomplices or not, we need to lead them deep underground and confine them. Does everyone understand that?" Hange laid out the plan to apprehend those two.

"Either way, we've got to go!" Eren was about to head out the door, but Levi spoke up.

"Calm down, Eren." Levi spoke up as you all turned around. "You all listen, too. We're going on our own ways now. Sarah is in charge. The rest is up to you. Erwin may have thrown together your squad, but everything's riding on you. Got it, Armin? Work with Hange and combine your knowledge." Levi said to your blonde haired friend.

"Y-Yes, sir!" Armin intended to follow his Captain's orders.

"Mikasa. I don't know why you're so attached to Eren, but...use the utmost of your ability to protect Eren at all costs." Levi told Mikasa as she kept her determined look.

"Yes, sir! Of course!" Mikasa acknowledged the orders.

"Eren..." Levi turned to look at Eren eye to eye. "Learn to restrain yourself. Don't succumb to rage and lose sight of the goal. We can't afford another mistake." Levi made sure Eren knew that failure was not an option.

"Yes, sir!" Eren said as he prepared himself to do his best to not let anyone down in this mission.

"Finally, Y/N..." The Captain finally turned his gaze towards you as he saw the killer look in your eyes as he just held his stare right back at you. "...You know what you have to do. Just get it done and get your ass back as soon as possible." He said as he knew you were fully prepared for whatever was to come during this mission.

"I intend to do just that, Captain Levi." You said as you grabbed the handle of the door and walked out first as the images of the Colossal and Armored Titan flashed in your mind before they changed to Reiner and Bertolt. "If you two really are enemies of humanity...You won't escape my wrath..." You clenched your fists as all you scouts hurried out of base and made it to your horses on the others side of the wall as you took formation and followed the scouts through Wall Rose.

"There's a tower nearby where we can assess the wall. It's an abandoned castle to the southwest. We'll ride to Utgard Castle." Hange finished looking at her map as you rode ahead with no emotion, just the intention to save your friends, and lure in the other two traitors.

While riding your horse into the night with the rest of the Survey Corps, your mind had drifted back to the days of training as a cadet, and you remembered the Winter training everyone had to endure. The hardest task you remembered doing was the mountain hike you had to trudge through in order to make it back to camp. You were all kitted with heavy winter clothing and heavy equipment you had to drag along with you in order to complete the exercise. Being at the head of all your classmates, you and the first group finished within the expected time expectancy that the instructors had came up with, even though the weather was beginning to get harsher with time. You were walking around checking up with your fellow cadets to see how they were doing, and when you turned back to the goal, you saw Eren's group consisting of Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Connie, Marco and Sasha heading over as you smiled and waved to them.

"Hey, you guys made it." You said while wiping some snow off of Eren as the four of you made your way to the resting area where everyone got their rest.

"Thought we were gonna die out there." Eren said as he plopped down on his ass to catch his breath. "No one ever said winter training would be this tough." Eren complained in a weak voice.

"Damn it, I can't feel my legs." Jean said as his legs were just laid out flat and limp on the ground.

"I wish they'd let us inside already." Connie said as he closed his eyes from exhaustion.

"I bet they're busy putting together a huge feast for us! Yum..." Sasha said with her mouth in a hungry smile.

"No. It's just regular stew and potatoes." You said as she cried in sadness and hung her head down.

"Hey!" You heard someone call out as you all turned to see Reiner running over to you with a worried expression. "Christa is missing." He said as this made you all confused.

"She was sticking with Daz since he wasn't doing so well." Mikasa mentioned seeing Christa before they split ways from her group.

"Daz isn't here either. Ymir as well." Reiner mentioned the other two missing members of the cadet corps.

"Maybe they're with the last squad?" Marco suggested to try and put everyone at ease.

"Can't be. The last squad led by Thomas, just arrived. They never saw those three." Reiner said as you looked over in concern when you saw Thomas and his squad mates being questioned with nervous looks on their faces as you all grew worried as well.

"You don't think...they got lost?" Armin said the one thing no one wanted to suggest.

"They don't stand a chance if they're stuck in this blizzard." Connie also spoke of the harsh conditions rolling in as you instantly marched off towards the trail.

"Y/N!" Mikasa called you, but you didn't stop.

"I'm going after them." You said while throwing your hood back on.

"No, you're not." You grabbed by the instructors who had overheard you as they came towards your group.

"Everyone, get in the cabin." The head instructor ordered everyone back inside.

"You're kidding! Christa and the other two are missing!" You argued as the other instructor pushed you back to your friends.

"I know. We'll send a rescue team first thing in the morning." The head instructor said as you glared daggers at her.

"They won't last the night! Are you crazy!?" You screamed at them in anger.

"We won't make any more victims!" The head instructor scolded back at you as the wind suddenly picked up in speed and more snow came falling down as you all covered yourselves from the cold before it died down briefly.

"Fuck!" You groaned from the cold as you squinted your eyes towards the mountain in the distance. "Daz...Ymir...Christa..." You thought in worry as your friends were forced to drag you back inside, and you only offered a bit of resistance before turning back when the wind grew stronger.

After getting placed back in the cabins, you and your friends waited patiently for the right time to sneak out and rescue your friends yourselves. You were tightening your boots and while Eren walked pass you all ready to head off. Meanwhile, Mikasa and Armin were both wearing their winter gear as well and followed after Eren.

"It's better if you guys don't come along. Like our instructor said, you'll only end up becoming more victims." Eren said while turning back towards you three as you stood up straight and looked at him annoyingly.

"You know we're going so that YOU don't end up a victim right? Out of us four, you're probably the one who would get lost first." You said to him as was shocked by what you said.

"Huh? I wouldn't become a--!" Eren was silenced when you placed your hand that was encased in a warm glove on his face.

"Right, right, you wouldn't become a victim. I get it. We're still coming with you." You said while taking your hand off his face.

"We can't just leave Christa and the others." Armin also mentioned the importance of saving their friends.

"Hey. What do you think you're doing?" You all heard Reiner and turned to see him and Bertolt in the door way behind you four.

"Don't try to stop--!" Eren was silenced when Bertolt spoke up about something he wasn't expecting.

"You're gonna need a lot more gear than that." Bertolt said as Eren was confused while the two smiled at you guys.

"If you go by yourselves, you'll be in the same pickle as Christa." Reiner said as Bertolt chimed in.

"In a search, the more eyes, the better." Bertolt also gave a good tip when searching for missing people.

"You guys..." Eren was surprised by how willing they were.

"Hehe, as expected of Reiner and Bertolt, always trying to look out for your fellow brethren. You're big brother here is proud of you." You wrapped your arms around them playfully as they groaned and tried to escape your grasp.

"H-Hey, let go! Who made you the Big Brother of our corps anyway?" Reiner said as you looked at him in perplexion.

"Huh? Who else would it be? After all, I'm the best in the class so far. Hahahaha!" You gave him a hearty laugh.

"Why, you...!" Reiner glared at you in annoyance as you continued to laugh, but more footsteps caught your attention.

"Hey." You six turned around to see Connie, Sasha, and Marco walk out of the cabin room in their winter gear as well. "We're coming to." Connie spoke up about their plan to join you.

"The weather's steadily improving. I think we'll be fine." Marco spoke about the chances of success rising with time.

"I brought extra rations!" Sasha said while raising a sack of rations up as you nodded confidently and walked towards the door with your hand raised in the air.

"Alright! It's settled! Our search party is ready! Time to head out and--!" You stopped speaking and your hand stopped on the door handle when all of you heard an explosion off in the distance as its sound echoed through the valley. "What the hell was that?" You said in confusion as you ripped the door open and rushed outside to try and find where the sound came from, but visibility was still low. "Do you see anything!?" You yelled to your friends as the wind was still too loud and you all rushed out onto the trail.

"I can't see anything!" Reiner said as you all tried harder to find what had happened.

"Somebody's coming!" Sasha called out as you all turned to see her pointing towards the distance and towards the mountain as you all looked off to the side of the trail and saw a light in the distance.

"Oh shit...!" You went wide-eyed as you turned around and grabbed Armin by the shoulder. "Go get the instructors! Tell them that we've got a survivor! Run!" You said as Armin ran off to the other cabin as you turned back towards the rest of the group. "Let's go!" You yelled as all of you ran off towards the person in the distance.

You rushed off as fast as you could towards the person in the distance, but due to the heavy snowfall and high winds, you were fighting with everything you had in you to take one more step forward. The snow off the trail had piled high and it was up to your knees as you held your hand above your eyes to try and keep snow out of it. Everyone struggled, but the desire to help their friends kept them going as you all pushed on and eventually managed to get closer to the person making their way back.

"Hey! Who is that!? Christa?! Ymir!? Daz!?" You yelled while sinking your right leg back into the snow.

"Y/N!? That you!?" You heard the voice and recognized it to be Ymir. "Help me out will you! Daz is being a useless sack of shit!" You heard her say as stumbled in the snow but managed to keep your balance.

"Are you guys okay!?" You yelled as you grew closer and closer before finally you were the first to reach them and saw Daz unconscious on a makeshift sled. "Daz! Hey! Get over here quick!" You waved for your friends to come over.

"What's wrong!?" Reiner yelled in concern before falling face first in the snow.

"Daz is unconscious! We have to get him warmer and get him back inside! Use your coats!" You yelled as you slipped your gear off and pulled your coats off and threw them on top of Daz. "Alright, boys! Grab the rope!" You yelled as the wind blew stronger once again and you all yelled from the freezing temperature. "Hurry up!" You yelled as all the boys grabbed onto the rope. "PULL!!!" You screamed as you six male cadets yelled while pulling the sled as fast as you could and running back to camp.

"Are you okay? Where's Christa?" Mikasa asked as she and Sasha came towards Ymir, but she brushed pass them.

"Christa is making her way down and is fine, and I'm fine. Let's get back, I'm freezing my ass off." Ymir said while hiding her face in her hood as the other girls just followed after her.

"FUCK!" You yelled while kicking the door open and falling to the ground as the other boys dog piled on top of and around you in exhaustion as you dragged Daz inside. "I'm sweating like hell...but the cold is freezing my sweat and I feel rigid...!" You groaned and huffed heavy breaths as you turned over on your back.

"Are you all alright?" The instructors came inside to see you all on the floor and with your coats off that were covering Daz. "Get changed into warmer clothes and get near the fire inside. Now." The head instructor ordered as they crouched down near Daz.

"Come on, Y/N..." Reiner grabbed you by your shirt and lifted you off the ground a bit as your body was limp.

"Leave me...I'm done for..." You spoke in exaggeration as you were dragged back inside the cabin to get changed.

After getting into warmer clothes and huddling around the fire with blankets to warm you boys up, the girls returned to the cabin to get out of their gear as well while the instructors and a medic treated Daz. You were sitting in front of the fire in a much more rested state when a cup of a hot drink as lowered from above you and into your face as you glanced up to see Sasha.

"Here, they said to give you guys some hot stew to warm up." Sasha said as she and Mikasa walked around you boys with cups of stew.

"Thanks." You said to them before taking a nice sip of the stew and letting out a relieved breath. "Haaaah...I'm never doing that again..." You said before noticing Ymir wasn't in the cabin. "Hey, where's Ymir?" You asked as Mikasa turned towards you.

"She warmed up real quick near the fire while you guys were changing before she left to wait outside for Christa." Mikasa informed of where Ymir went.

"How can she go back out there? She's definitely not normal..." Connie said as he took a sip from his cup.

"Well, at least we know that they're all okay. The weather has lightened up since a few hours ago." Marco said as the wind was no longer audible from inside the cabin.

"The instructors said that we can sleep in and that we'd head off later in the day. It's almost dawn so we should get some rest while we can." Mikasa mentioned as Reiner was the first to stand up.

"Then I'm going to get as much sleep as I can. Night." Reiner said while walking away as Bertolt followed him to the bunks in the cabin.

"Hey, Reiner, try not to snore so loud. Bertolt, I'm expecting you to give us an interesting pose in your sleep. I want some decent weather when we all wake up." You laughed while looking back at them.

"Whatever you say, Y/N." Reiner just chuckled as Bertolt smiled awkwardly, as the sight of them slowly began to grow blurry before you were suddenly snapped back out of your memories.

"Y/N! Y/N!" Armin called out to you as you shook your head to regain your bearings before turning towards him. "Slow down. You're going to drift into the center guard." He said as you looked ahead to see you were too close to those ahead of you in the formation and eased your horse back a bit.

"Sorry." You apologized as you Armin noticed the troubled look on your face.

"Are you okay?" Armin asked in worry as you glanced at him with almost emotionless eyes before averting your gaze away from him.

"Armin...what am I supposed to do..." You asked a question that made no sense to him. "I...I wanna protect my friends...my family...but now I'm finding out one after another, that there's people betraying us..." You said as the image of Reiner, Bertolt, and Annie flashed in your mind. "I don't know...who to trust anymore..." You said with a sad tone.

"Y/N!" Armin shouted with a surprising tone that startled you as you turned around to see him looking at you with a stern face. "No matter what...We'll always be by your side." Armin said as you glanced back to see Mikasa and Eren looking at you with the same look as Armin, as they overheard you.

"...Yeah..." You said as some of the shine in your eyes returned and they smiled when you grew a small smile on your face. "I can always trust you guys...We're family." You said as you remembered the memories of your childhood with Eren, Armin and Mikasa.

"And there are also more people that will be by your side. You'll know it when you're with them." Armin said as you glanced off in the distance to see Sasha riding not too far away.

"...Yeah, you're right." You said as the smile on your face widened a bit more when Sasha noticed you staring at her and waved with the almost finished potato she had received before as dawn began to rise behind her.

"Everyone, ahead!" You were all snapped out of your own worlds when you heard Hange scream from ahead of the formation. "Multiple Titans are gathered at the castle ruins! Prepare for combat!" Hange ordered as you rode faster and in the distance, you saw your friends near the Titans, and Christa was frozen still as two Titans slowly approached her.

"MIKASA!!!!" You screamed for her aid as the two of you quickly stood atop your horses and drew your blades before speeding off using your gear.

Christa had tears welling in her eyes as she thought her life was about to extinguished before she could her secret to her closest friend. Before the two Titans could grab on to her, the sound of ODM gear wires and gas filled the air as you and Mikasa dove towards the Titans and slayed them in one swoop. Christa was in awe of what just happened as you and Mikasa landed on top of a pile of rubble before the corpses of the Titans could hit the ground. Meanwhile, Reiner, Bertolt, and Connie had just caught up to Christa as they stared up at you two in shock.

"Christa. Everyone, get back." Mikasa said as you two stood up straight and turned back to them with battle ready faces. "Leave the rest to us." She said as Christa was surprised to see who had saved her.

"Y/N! Mikasa!" Christa's voice was silenced when she and the rest of her unequipped allies saw a horde of scouts fly overhead.

In an instant, your reinforcements had swarmed the huge mob of Titans and began to dwindle their numbers at a fast rate. You turned your gaze back to see three Titans rushing over towards you, and with an annoyed click of you teeth, you pulled the triggers on your gear and shot an anchor straight into the eye of the closest Titan. Using your gas, you flew and wrapped around and above the Titan as time felt slow, and in that instant, you remembered how Levi held his blades, one being in the opposite direction. For some reason, you felt that his form seemed more efficient for the spinning technique. You reversed the position of your right blade so that you held it with the blade pointed down, and with the push of your triggers, you zoomed down towards the Titan while performing the violent spiral attack, as you blades completely tore through the nape and you almost took its head off. You were surprised by how power this small change made your attack, and with an excited grin, you turned your sights on the next two and charged full speed with the spiral attack, slicing them into ribbons before delivering the final blow and killing them.

"Hmph, to think holding your blades like this would make the spins easier and deadlier." You thought as you were impressed by the effectiveness of Levi's fighting style, but you were snapped out of your thoughts when you noticed Eren swing by. "Huh? Eren?" You thought in confusion as he zoomed pass a Titan before circling around and slicing off its nape. "He got it!" You were amazed at his first kill as a human.

"I did it! My first kill!" Eren said with an excited smile on his face.

"Eren! Your wires!" You yelled as he turned around in confusion, but it was too late as his wires crossed and threw off his balance as he barely landed on his feet before flipping onto his back.

"You moron! I told you to stay back, Eren!" Eren's handling officer yelled while flying by him.

"Jeez...pay more attention, Eren." You said while walking by and patting his shoulder. "But...Nice kill!" You gave him a cheeky smile and thumbs up as smiled by your praise.

"Right!" Eren said before growing confused when you walked away.

"Now, watch this." You said before flying after more Titans.

"Hey!" Eren's attention to you was pulled away when he turned to see Connie, Reiner, and Bertolt running towards him.

"H-Hey! You're supposed to be watching me--!" You stopped midsentence when you saw Reiner and Bertolt and your emotionless eyes returned as a Titan's hand was about to grab you.

"H-Hey! Look out!" A scout was about to rescue you, but stopped when he saw something incredible.

At mind numbing speeds, the scout watched you spin in a few circles before the giant hand that was about to grab you, suddenly exploded into a slosh of blood. With terrifying eyes, you zoomed around the Titan and sliced the nape off the Titan with so much power, it fell faster and harder than the others. Feeling rage burn inside of you, the spiral attack continued as you moved on from one Titan to another, garnering everyone's attention as you were doing even more impressive than Mikasa was doing. Five more Titans remained as you flew straight over them and readied your blades, and within a few seconds, everyone saw you disappear into the horde before blood flew into the air along with four napes from the Titans. Four corpses dropped to the ground as one small Titan remained. You flipped backwards before latching to the back of its head and flying towards it at full speed. Using your feet, you slammed into the back of the Titan's head as the force was enough to send the small Titan falling down to its face. The scouts were in awe, and when Sarah finally noticed what was going on, she was beyond shocked when the image of Levi flashed in her mind briefly before she clearly saw you with raise your blades in the air. Blood from the Titan's dripped and evaporated from your body you remembered the faces off all the friends you made and the ones you felt you could trust the most.

"That's right...I know there are friends who will stay by my side..." Your blades began to fall towards the nape of the Titan as the image of your mother, your sister, and little Sarah flashed in your mind. "That's why I'll keep getting stronger..." You thought as your blades pierced the flesh of the Titan and began to cut deep into its nape. "...to protect the ones I love." You strengthened your resolve as your blades had already hacked off the nape, but because you were too far in, your swords cut through all the way and the small Titan's head came flying off as they found what they thought to be, the second strongest man in humanity, that could possibly rival even that of Levi himself.
