Wall Sina, The Same Night

After being ordered to return to the capital, you and the rest of the scouts were put up and ordered to remain in house until it was time for the Military Police to take Eren from you all, which was scheduled to happen in seven days. You were sitting on the floor inside a dark room as the light of the moon shined through the window, but the shadows of the room kept you hidden. The only thing running through your mind was the images of the dead comrades that you weren't able to save from the expedition. Your eyes were strained and dry from having no more tears to shed and your hair was unkempt and hid your gaze behind your bangs. You had one knee up with your left arm rested atop of it and your other leg was stretched out as across from you, sat your ODM gear with your jacket and cloak hanging above them. You raised the hand that had the rings your mother gave you, and put them in the moonlight as they blocked your vision of your jacket and shined from the light's reflection. You leaned your head back and it hit the wood behind you as you leaned against the wall and your vision refocused on your cloak.

"I'll do whatever it takes to keep my friends alive..." You repeated one of your statements from the expedition as the image of Levi squad flashed through your mind. "...what bullshit..." You muttered as you dropped your hand and stared out the window to the moon. "We lost so many soldiers, and the plan failed...we barely made it back and now the Military is going to take Eren away...and there's nothing I can do about it..." You talked to yourself as you reached down to your side and grabbed one of your shoes and gripped it tightly while holding the same cold stare on your face. "...you should've died with them, asshole..." You said as you threw your shoe at the jacket and cloak with enough force to knock them off with a loud thud as the shoe and clothing landed on top of your gear.

You stared at the Wings of Freedom crest on your jacket and furrowed your brows as you raised your hand with the rings up once more, and slowly reached for one of them. You pinched your index and thumb on the ring that was worn on your ring finger and slowly began to pull it off as it was beginning to loosen from your skin.

"I don't deserve to where these...I'm a disgrace to them..." You thought as you were ashamed of yourself while imagining your mother and father in your mind.

Just before you could pull of the ring, a knock came from the door and you stopped midway of pulling the ring off your finger as your eyes slowly glanced over to the door. You remained silent as another knock came and then a voice spoke up.

"Y/N? Are you okay? I heard a noise." You the voice of Armin come from the door.

"Armin? Was he in the other room? Whatever...He'll leave if I just stay quiet..." You thought as you remained in your position and turned your eyes back on the ring and began to pull again.

"Y/N, you're there, aren't you? Mikasa told me you came here straight once we arrived..." Armin spoke as you remained silent and stared at the ring before trying to pull again. "Y/N...please say something...everyone's worried..." Armin said as you hung your head down once more bawled your hands into fists.

"Go away, Armin..." You said as Armin felt relieved when he heard your voice, but continued to press you. 

"Hey, Y/N...It's already late, have you had any dinner yet? We can go get something really fast, I'm sure there's some bread left." Armin said to try and get you out of your room.

"I'm not hungry." You replied to him as this was beginning to worry Armin about your mental health.

"Y/N... you don't have to go through this on your own. This expedition took a toll on all of us. It's true, you're stronger than the rest of us in so many ways, but even the strong eventually hit a wall that's hard to overcome. Your strength can only carry you so far, so you shouldn't always try to shoulder everything on your own." Armin explained as he stayed put at the door, but silence was all he received as this was beginning to worry him. "Y/N!" Armin called your name once more. 

"SHUT UP!" You voice shouted from the other side of the door as Armin winced in shock. "YOU DON'T GET IT! NONE OF YOU DO! You don't understand how utterly useless I was...!" You said as you were on your knees and looked down at your hands with rage as you ground your teeth together. "I am the top cadet of the 104th Cadet Corps! I was chosen by the advance team to protect Trost during the Titan Invasion! I've killed a score of Titans in one day than the entire Military Police have seen in their entire existence! I AM REGARDED AS THE STRONGEST AMONGST!!!" You yelled at the top of your lungs while raising your fist in the air and punching the ground, pushing through the wood as it split and caved in a bit. "But...I couldn't do anything at all...!" You whimpered as you pulled out your hand that was covered in a few splinters and scratches. "At every turn of the battle when we were out there, I was completely and utterly useless...I even thought I saved one life of a guy that was being chased by the target...but then...!" You gripped your right fist with your left hand as tears that you thought were run dry, began to drip from your eyes once more. "...I survive only to find out that he was eaten shortly after I saved him...!" You thought as you remembered saving the scout and pulling him on your horse and him thanking you before he left to assist the others scouts while the target was trapped. "Why...it's too cruel...!" Your entire body began to tremble as your breath hitched. "It's all too cruel...!" You said as you remembered how not even the bodies of the dead were able to come home. "...And now, one of my closest friends is about to die, and I can't do anything to stop it." You said as you raised your gaze and glared at the green cloak that the Wings of Freedom were embroidered upon as you launched to your feet and grabbed it with rage. "WHAT'S THE POINT IN LIVING IF SO MANY HAVE TO DIE IN YOUR PLACE!? WHY!?!?!" You screamed in despair as you went to punch the wall with the cloak.

"To continue the mission." You heard another voice come from the other side of the door as you froze an inch away from the blank spot you tried to make a hole in. "They die placing their trust in the comrades they know will survive. They give their lives knowing that their wills shall be carried on by the living. That is what gives their deaths meaning." You slowly turned towards the door as the lock was turned and the door opened to reveal Commander Erwin standing in the doorway, and your friends and two of his assistants behind him. "It's true that you are strong, but this world will always put a wall in your way and knock you down. However, that's why we must come together and share the burden amongst ourselves and keep moving ahead in order to overcome any wall that gets put in our way." Erwin said while stepping into the room as your head was beginning to lower. "There's still a chance to give their deaths meaning. The Survey Corps will continue its operations. Will you remain here wallowing in your own shame, or stand on your feet once more to continue the fight?" Erwin gave the question as you slowly dropped to your knees and began to cry.

"I...I...!" You broke down as you couldn't help but remember the smiles of Levi squad when things weren't so terrible during the short time you spent with them. "...I'll...continue the mission, sir...!" You began to cry.

"I acknowledge the strength you've shown during your time as a Scout, especially the strength you mustered up in this moment. You have my upmost respect, Y/N." Erwin said as he turned away from you.

"Y/N!" Mikasa rushed pass Erwin as she, Armin, and Jean all rushed in to be by your side as you held onto Mikasa while they comforted you the best they could.

"Your little brother is strong, but has there's still much more room for him to mature as a soldier. When those times come, he will need you at his side..." Erwin said while walking out the room as your sister was leaned against the wall with tears welling in her eyes. "...Sarah." He said before he and his assistants turned and walked down the hall way.

"Yes, Commander..." Sarah said as she could only listen to you cry while you were surrounded by your friends, and they held you close.

"Forgive me...forgive me...!" You cried while holding onto your friends as they all consoled you and surrounded you with warmth and love.

After a moment of comfort and finding the strength to stand once more as a soldier, you joined your friends that night and headed for Commander Erwin as there was something important that needed to be discussed. You walked at the head of your group of friends with no more tears as you sported your Scouts uniform jacket and readjusted the rings on your fingers. After traversing through the base, you all had caught up with Commander Erwin and his assistants where they led you all to one of the dining rooms. Erwin opened the doors where behind the entrance and sat in the seats of a table, were Levi and Eren who were waiting for them.

"Sorry to keep you waiting." Erwin said as Levi and Eren turned their attention towards him. 

"Not at all, sir." Eren replied before he was surprised when he saw you and your friends all walk in behind him. "You guys! U-Um..." Eren was unsure of what to say, but Erwin chimed in before he could get his sentence out.

"We have identified a person of interest who may be the Female Titan." Erwin said as the young Titan shifter was shocked at hearing this news. "This time, we won't let her escape." He said as your mind flashed back to a certain moment in the fight between Eren and the Female Titan.

Erwin and the rest of you gathered around a table and sat down as a map of Stohess District was laid out for you all to see. Sarah sat next to you and gave you a worried glance, but was surprised when she saw you weren't showing any signs of depression or shame. Instead, your face was stern and you had a burning look in your eye that she had never seen before. 

"The operation will be in two days. It will take place in Stohess District, on our way to the capital. This is our first and last chance." Erwin spoke up as Sarah turned her attention back to the operations report that was passed to everyone. "Once we pass that point, Eren will be remanded to the capital. Our pursuit of those who seek to destroy they walls will become fraught with difficulty. Ultimately, humanity stands to go extinct. We will stake everything on this plan. Here it is." The Commander emphasized the importance of this operation as Eren nodded in agreement and Erwin pointed to a certain point on a map which lead to an underground entrance to the slums below the district. "When we pass through Stohess, Eren will act as a decoy, and lead the target into this underground tunnel. If we can get her to the lowest level, given the tunnel's size and structural integrity, even if the target transforms, we can immobilize her. But if she transforms before then...Eren , we'll need your help." Erwin brought up a failsafe that involved another Titan face off between Eren and the Female Titan.

"Yes, sir." Eren replied a bit nervous, but understanding of his role in the operation. "As for the target...Are we sure she is in Stohess?" Eren asked as your grip on the operation report tightened from the topic of the target.

"Yes, our target is a member of the Military Police." Erwin confirmed Eren's questions.

"The Military Police?" Eren asked in surprise of the precise speculation of the target's whereabouts.

"It was Armin who arrived at that conclusion." Erwin said as Eren glanced at Armin. "He believes the target also killed the two captured Titans. She may be a former trainee from the 104th, the same as you." Erwin dropped a huge assumption on the table that left Eren in disbelief. 

"W-Wait a second...The 104th?" Eren asked as he just couldn't believe the assumption of there being a traitor amongst their friends/comrades.

"The name of the girl we believe to be the person of interest is...Annie Leonhart." Erwin revealed the target of the operation as it couldn't click in Eren's mind.

"Annie's the Female Titan? Why? Why do you think that, Armin?" Eren asked in shock of Armin's accusation of Annie.

"From the start, the Female Titan knew what you looked like. And she reacted to your nickname, 'suicidal bastard', which only the 104th trainees would know. And the biggest reason is that I believe Annie killed the test subjects, Sawney and Bean." Armin backed his claims with bold assumption as you laid down the papers in your hand and lowered your face.

"How can you tell? Only someone very skilled could have done it. And they'd have used their own Maneuver Gear, which they're accustomed to." Armin explained as Eren understood the last part of what he said.

"Yeah, wasn't that why they inspected our Maneuver Gear? But they didn't find anything on Annie..." Eren tried to find holes in Armin's accusations.

"Annie brought Marco's Maneuver Gear to the inspection. That's why she managed to avoid getting caught." Armin said as this completely shocked Eren and shut his defense of Annie down.

"What are you talking about? What does Marco have to do with this?" Eren was confused on the whole situation.

"I don't know." Armin also didn't understand how Marco was involved in this situation even after being found dead.

"Are you sure it was his?" Eren asked Armin to confirm that it was Marco's gear.

"Yes, I know what I--" Armin tried defending himself, but Levi grew tired of it.

"Hey, kid. We get it. Do you have any other evidence?" Levi asked the blonde haired boy as Armin replied that he didn't.

"I think Annie's face resembles the Female Titan's" Mikasa chimed in her assumption with no hesitation.

"Huh?! What are you talking about? This isn't evidence--" Eren stood up in disagreement and denial of the accusations being made, but you suddenly stood up in a fierce way that caught everyone's attention.

"What is it?" Levi asked as everyone was now staring at you while you remained silent.

"Y/N?" Sarah looked at you with worry as you turned towards the door.

"Excuse me for a moment..." You muttered to everyone as you stepped out of the room.

They all looked towards the door as it closed behind you, and a few seconds later, there was a loud crashing noise that startled everyone except Levi and Erwin, though the Commander was a bit surprised by the commotion. Jean went and opened the door in a hasty manner, but flinched back when he saw you standing in front of the door.

"Sorry, I had to let off some steam..." You said while walking back inside as they all looked into the hall to see a smashed wooden barrel broken in pieces on the ground as you sat back down with a bloody knuckle. "I have evidence that confirms Annie is the right person of interest, and that she is the Female Titan." You said as this piqued everyone's interest as your friends stared at you with shock. "First off, Jean, you remember finding me hurt in that alley the night after cleaning up Trost?" You asked.

"Y-Yeah...you were beaten up in a way I couldn't imagine seeing you get beat up." Jean said as he recalled the night picking you off the ground in an alley.

"That night, I was coming back from visiting my mother. On my way back, I thought I recognized someone I knew and saw them duck suspiciously into an alley." You started and hid the fact that it was Reiner that you saw that night, because you didn't want anymore people that were close to you tangled in this situation. "When I followed them and found out it wasn't who I thought it was, I was about to leave. Then, someone in dark clothing knocked both of us down and robbed the person who I followed into the alley. I gave chase and we wound up on the rooftops. After catching up, they revealed and tried attacking me with Maneuver Gear blades. I thought it strange thinking a thief would have such gear for mere muggings, but I never suspected it of anything else..." You said as Levi took notice of your last sentence, but remained silent. "However, with Armin's claims and the fact that my attacker was using Maneuver Gear, there's almost no doubt that it was Annie I fought on the roof that night, and that I caught her when she was trying to go to where the test subjects were being held." You explained the first piece of evidence you had.

"Then, your second piece of evidence?" Erwin asked as you looked towards him.

"During the fight between Eren and the Female Titan, I noticed at the end of it, a distinct action I saw the Female Titan perform, and it was an action I only ever saw one person do. During our days of training in the 104th, I knew everyone around me and certain habits they had. During hand-to-hand combat exercises, Annie had this unique fighting style and fighting stance that she would show off before completely destroying her opponents. Rarely did she spar, but when she did, I would always take note of her pose. The Female Titan made the same fighting stance that Annie makes whenever engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Same form and technique." You laid out your second piece of evidence as this further strengthened, practically confirming that Annie is the Female Titan. 

"These are all just assumptions! There's no proof--!" Eren was cut off by Levi.

"So you have no proof, but you'll do it anyway." Levi said as Eren stared at you all with disbelief in his eyes.

"You have no proof? What? Then why do it? What if it isn't here?" Eren asked as Mikasa replied instantly.

"Then we'll know she's innocent. That's all." Mikasa said as Eren was out of breath from what he was hearing.

"And then I'll feel bad for Annie. However, if we don't do something, you'll end up being sacrificed to the people in the capital!" Armin said as Eren turned away from everyone, denying all the claims against Annie.

"You're crazy to think Annie's a Titan." Eren said as this was beginning to get on your nerve at this point.

"Eren, now that you know we suspect her, isn't it ringing any bells?" Mikasa asked Eren's memories from his fight against the Female began to pour in.

"Remember, Eren...the last blow from the Female Titan was a powerful kick only a professional martial artists could pull off." You said as Eren was beginning to lose himself. "It's all true, Eren. Annie is the enemy. She's a Titan!" You said as Eren had a despaired and confused look written all over his face as you let out a heavy sigh. "I thought you'd be more understanding than I was about this whole situation, but it appears I was wrong..." You said while turning towards the door. "Commander, I also have something to add, but I'm not too sure about this assumption of mine." You said as he turned towards you.

"What is it?" Erwin asked in interest of the information that was pouring out of you.

"Due to personal experiences I've shared with her, I believe Annie also seems to have me set in her sights, as well." You said as this surprised your friends.

"Huh?" Armin was jaw dropped in shock.

"Why? What reason would there be in coming after you?" Mikasa asked as you closed your eyes and remembered the night you spent with Annie.

"...At one point in time, me and Annie spent time together on a personal level. We said somethings while our guards were lowered around each other, and before I knew it, we were doing things I didn't think the two of us would engage in at all. It was the only time I ever saw another side of Annie...a side of her that was so vulnerable, so tired of living in such a shitty world. It was as if the two of us wanted to leave this place just to be together." You explained as Levi lowered his paper.

"Get to the point, kid." Levi said as you turned your gaze towards him.

"In other words, I believe that Annie has also painted a target on my back besides Eren. During the expedition she had numerous chances to crush me into a bloody paste, but instead she tried to capture me over and over. My conclusion is that if she does get Eren, taking me would be a little bonus." You said to everyone.

"What happened between you and Annie that she would come after you?" Jean asked in wonder.

"That part is complicated...it's only my assumption, but I'm sure that an encounter between me and Annie, it might throw her off guard." You said as Levi turned in his seat.

"An assumption? We can't go off too many assumptions here now. If you know why she's after you, then--" Levi was cut off when you stood up and turned to everyone.

"I believe she is after me for the sake of love." You explained as everyone was beyond astounded over this accusation you just claimed. "Me and Annie spent a night together, it was only one night, but it felt like we had melted our hearts together and we both just wanted to leave this shitty world and live off on our own. She shed tears that night, maybe overcome by whatever acts she had committed against humanity. She's a cold hearted loner most of the time, but the Annie I saw that night when we were together, it was like she was looking for some other life that was far out of reach." You said while glancing at your friends for a moment before turning to Commander Erwin. "Commander, I know that what I'm saying is probably just some bullshit, but this is what I believe to be the reason of her attempts to capture me. I'll use this chance to get close to her and lower her guard." You walked away from the table and headed for the door.

"Y/N..." Commander Erwin called to you as you stopped at the door, but didn't turn your head back.

"...I thought for a while that I loved her...but now that I know who she is and what she's done...I can never forgive her." You said while walking out of the room and travelling down the hallway.

"I don't wanna feel alone anymore...I don't wanna feel sad anymore...I don't wanna remember those terrible things anymore...!" Those words she cried out during your night together with Annie echoed in your mind as you brought your hand up to your chest and clenched your aching heart.

"Why...Why, Annie..." You thought as you remembered the night of the ceremony for picking the branches you would join, and how Annie stared at you with tears in her eyes, pleading for you to go with her. "Are you really...an enemy to humanity?" You thought as you disappeared into the darkness of the hallway as you remembered the image of your father in your mind. "...Annie Leonhart..." You muttered her name as the image of her shattered in your mind as you clenched your teeth and your eyes boiled with anger. "To avenge my father and all my comrades your murdered...I will kill you myself, traitor." You declared this vow against your former lover as your heart filled with rage and hatred.

Meanwhile, in Stohess District, Annie was laid awake in bed while her bunkmate, Hitch, was sound asleep and snoring. Annie turned her head towards the window where she could see the moon and stars shining upon the land, and while staring at those stars, she felt that same cold feeling she was used to when a breeze blew through the window. She shivered a bit and pulled up her blanket to cover herself, but sighed when the cold feeling wasn't going away fast enough. At that moment, she tried to remember the warmth she had felt when she was with you, but the feeling never come as she wished to have your arms wrapped around her. 

"Y/N...I..." Annie muttered softly to herself when she remembered injuring you during the expedition. "I'm sorry, Y/N...I just wanted to..." She curled up a bit and shut her eyes with a frustrated look. "...no matter what happens, I swear I'll save you. Then, I'll take you back home with me, where we can spend the rest of my time together...Y/N." She thought to herself while standing up and walking over to the window to stare at the sky.

You were stood outside on a balcony of the base while Annie stood at her window, staring up at the same starry sky above your heads. Annie only had a hopeful look on her face while you had one full of rage and sadness.

"Annie..." You muttered while reaching your hand up to the sky.

"Y/N..." Annie slowly raised one hand up to the sky as well.

"I..." You slowly flipped your hand to have your palm face upward, before shutting it firmly into a fist. "...will kill you." You said with determination as you fully prepared yourself to kill the traitor to humanity, and who you thought was a traitor to your heart.
