Chapter 14 - Familiar

"What now......?" Jim asked with an audible sigh, as Victor grumbled once again. The sargent sure that it was the tenth time he had done such a thing since Schultz had appeared with the new XO. The pair of feral mutants sitting at the end of the long table. Both watching as the new captain ate and laughed with the others.

"There is something not right about that one........" The comment from his older sibling making James roll his eyes.

Of course, Victor had been complaining about what had happened, ever since he was able to step foot outside the captain's office. The feral wanting to know if his brother had known about their new officer being a shape shifter and hadn't told him. James telling him that he hadn't known a goddamn thing, and that Victor was only annoyed because the captain had been able to beat him at his own game. Victor of course claiming that he would have won, if Black hadn't been able to change into that big moron, Dekker.

"What? What's not, right? Look, you got rid of Drake because he wasn't like us; what did you think......that they weren't going to send a replacement? That the brass were just gonna let us get on with this, by ourselves. If anything, you got what you wanted, Vic, the XO is a mutant......."

"Its not that........" James once again rolling his eyes.

"Then what......?"

"Don't ya think that he looks familiar?" Victor continued. Jim's brows furrowing, as he turned his attention back to the captain.

He had to admit that when he had sat down in the office, there had been something; something about the man in front of him that had brought back memories. But he had forgotten about it, when the captain had started talking about what he wanted for the platoon; what he was going to do for the men. But obviously if Victor had seen it too, perhaps he shouldn't have let the thought, slip.

"What..........?"

"If I didn't know better, I would say that that was Matt Walker. The guy is the spitting image of him........"

"Matt? But Matt........"

"Yeah, I know. He bought it in the last one." Victor interrupted, as he finished off the food on his plate and wiped his mouth on the back of his sleeve. The two feral's continuing to watch the captain as he listened to the likes of the lieutenant, Sanchez, Novak and Gates talking about what happened around the camp, as well as what to expect when he finally got to meet the camp commander.

"Didn't he tell us that his wife was pregnant? Maybe that's his kid. Looks about the right age. Widow could have married again and that's why the name change." Jim countered, as he watched the captain's movements; having to admit that this John Black certainly did look like the doppelganger of the man that both ferals had known in the last war; but the movements, gestures and how he held himself, were definitely different.

"Maybe. But it's not just that. There's something weird about that guy's smell, too. As soon as I stepped foot in that office........there was something not quite right..........." Vic mused, as he sniffed at the air, hoping that he could catch the odour again and put his finger on what made this captain so different.

"Will you just leave it, Vic. Look, just accept it, this guy is here ta stay. You aren't gonna run him off like ya did, Drake. Let's give him a chance, huh?" James countered; slumping back in his chair, as Victor let out a huff before getting to his feet and leaving the mess tent.

                                                         >>----------------------------------<<

(Y/n) looked up as Creed suddenly got to his feet and left the mess tent. She wasn't going to take it personally, despite the strange look that the big feral had given her, before making his way outside; it a big step in what was hopefully in the right direction, that he had stuck around, even after she had come into the tent with Schultz. It obviously having embarrassed the feral that he had been seen getting his ass handed to him. Though if he knew that she was actually a woman, that slight embarrassment would certainly become complete and utter humiliation. And she would rather save humiliation for another time; it her weapon if Creed continued to be less than cooperative. So, for now..........

"Well.........." The captain slowly getting to her feet.

"If you gentlemen will excuse me, it has been quite an eventful day; and we have lots of work to do tomorrow. So, lieutenant, let's not forget those little demonstrations in the morning. And if you know of somewhere beyond the camp where we can do it, I think that would be better. As I said, lets keep everything about this platoon, to ourselves for the time being. And Schulz, Gorsky and Dekker, I want to see you all at seven am, in what is left of my office." The other men at the table getting to their feet and saluting as the captain left them. (Y/n) giving Howlett a small nod, before she too left the tent.

                                                         >>----------------------------------<<

"Who are you........really.............?" A voice called out from the darkness, as (Y/n) made her way back to the makeshift building that would be her home for some time to come. Her arms crossing over her chest, as Creed appeared from the gloom to stand in the moonlight.

"With that kind of question, Creed; I feel like I should only be giving you my name, rank and serial number." She replied, as she took a few steps closer to the feral.

"I am Captain John William Black............."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah........I know that my eyes might agree with you; but my nose......" Creed tapping the side of his nose with his finger.

"My nose tells me something different. It tells me that you are more than meets the eye........."

"I am a shape shifter, Creed. I take on all aspects of those I change into. Maybe, just maybe, you are smelling yourself. May a suggest a shower before you bunk down for the night." The captain giving him a look; the two glaring at one another, until Victor reluctantly saluted.

"Now that's more like it. I will make a real soldier out of you yet, Creed...." (Y/n) said, before turning to leave.

"I'll figure it out. And when I do..........."

"Yeah, I know. And until you do, I am gonna be a pain in your ass, Creed. So, get used to seeing this face every time you turn around........." (Y/n) called back. Not even bothering to look at the sargent as she walked away.
