The king has a power to wipe memories. If someone would get this, they would spread it by touching people. And for those who weren't affected, they can make people remember the wiped memories. 

This is set basically like if you watch and/or watched Lord of the Rings, basically like that.  

Elves are forgotten and thought of as enemies, mainly because they are the first shifters. They are the only people who can shift into mythical animals. 

in order to shift correctly, you must've seen the animal you shift into. For example, Rose can shift into a wolf. She would have had seen a wolf first hand. So then you would think, how can elves shift into mythical animals? well, that means they aren't that mythical after all.
