By the River


BY THE RIVER 


I first glimpsed her by the river

causing heart and mind to quiver;

such an image I had never held before.

Swan's grace and regal bearing

in the golden sunlight wearing but a smile,

and my unsuspecting heart's defenses tore.


I hastened to her company

with a hope of introduction

but the method and the words were choked with fear.

How does one approach an angel

with intention to exchange, well...

the first thing one must do is to get near.


She continued right on walking

unperturbed, without a care,

dainty feet creating indents on the shore.

The smile remained complacent,

as made myself adjacent, and I prayed

my presence she would not ignore.


I inquired the lady's name,

my request was most respectful

and she turned her enigmatic smile on me.

Her eyes were perfect circles

filled with opaque silver blue

t'was then I realized she could not see.


I introduced myself by name

holding out great expectation

that her handicap she'd think I did not see.

But her response was still the smile

and it took me quite a while

to realize she could not vocalize to me.


She turned her face toward the river

and with lithe and graceful strides

allowed herself to walk into the stream.

So now I ask myself the question

did I really see this vision

or was she simply an imaginary dream.
