Fishing Buddies

Short walk from house to dock

With fishing poles in hand

Wood dock rocks with footsteps

Dock floats where water stands

Pontoon boat tied to dock

Passage to fishing spots

With first streaks of the dawn

Clouds look like polka dots

Crow caws fly overhead

We push boat from wood dock

Motor roars and rumbles

Mallards take flight and squawk

We head on down the lake

To favorite fishing holes

Hair flies back behind me

We watch far shoreline roll

Enter a quiet cove

Trees line the edge of shore

Cut motor, then we float

And share some fishing lore

While catching fish is fun

There's so much more to do

We talk about our lives

Mistakes that we still rue

We share our future plans

Hope for a better life

Steps to make world friendly

Help those immersed in strife

A doe steps from dark woods

And takes a timid drink

When hunting hound dog bays

Doe's gone before I blink

Then there is a nibble

Clear fishing line rolls out

Pole jerk to set the hook

"Missed him," I softly pout

My buddy makes a cast

Sharp hook lands in a tree

"You won't find fish up there!"

I laugh and slap my knee

Takes a little effort

To disengage sharp hook

Leaves twirl to cool water

While tugs cause branch to crook

I slowly move the boat

Slip closer to the shore

With a little swearing

Frees hook with wooden oar

We chuckle over goofs

Commotion settles down

Soon our lines are singing

Our worries left in town

Catching fish a bonus

Togetherness our goal

Lake's motion and her sounds

Help soothe our troubled souls
