Chapter 25 - Becoming An Adult
"Nancy's POV
I woke up and rubbed my eyes sleepily. I got out of bed and walked to my door. I went down the stairs and into the kitchen to see no one here.
I see a note on the dinner table. I pick it up. I looked at it. It said.
Dear Stanford and Jenny,
Your father and I decided we needed a break from you three.
The three was scribbled a little and they put a four. I sighed and kept reading.
We decided to leave you guys there and took Anne to your grandma's.
I stopped reading and pondered for a brief moment. "Do I have a grandma? That's alive?" I thought to myself. I looked back at the note and continued reading.
Please stay out of trouble and don't trash the house. We'll be gone for a while since we haven't had a break for a while.
Also, our relationship has been falling apart since we had you and want to try fixing it. We love all three of you and will see you soon.
Again they scratched out the three and put a four.
I set the note down and went the phone. Today was Stanly's Bar Mitzvah. I wanted to call Richie to see if he and Eddie were going.
I dialed Riches number and looked around. The phone rang two times before a lady's voice answered the phone.
"Hello?" She asked. I knew it was Richie's mom. "Hello, Mrs. Tozier...Is Richie there?" I asked. "Who?" She said.
"Richie...Your son." I said feeling awkward at this situation. "One moment." She said. I waited a few moments until I heard Richie.
"Hello?" He said out of breath. "Hey...Are you going to Stan's Bar Mitzvah?" I asked. "Yeah, You going?" "Yeah. Is Eddie going?" I asked.
It went silent on the phone. "No..." He said. "Why not?" "Eddie broke his arm-" "Is he alright?" I asked cutting him off.
"Yeah he's fine but, his mom thinks we broke his arm so she's not letting anyone see him." He said. "Oh..." I said. "Yeah..." He said.
It got silent again. Richie decided to break the silence. "Do you need a ride?" He asked. "Is it not a problem?" I asked.
"Nope." He said. "Alright," I said twisting the phone cord. "Okay pick you up in an hour." He said. "Thanks. Bye." I said.
"Bye, I love you." He said. We hung up the phone. I turned and got a snack from the kitchen and then made my way upstairs.
I went up the stairs and into my room. I shut the door and set my snack on my dresser. I took off my shirt and threw it in the dirty hamper.
I did the rest with my clothes and walked to my closet and got a blue and white button up half way dress.
I went to my dresser and got white panties and a white bra. I put them on first and then got socks that were white.
I slipped them on and then put on the dress. I ate my snack quickly and threw the wrapper away in the trash bin.
I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth. I brushed my hair. I then went into Jenny's room. She was still asleep.
I walked over to her "Makeup station" I grabbed her curling iron and her straightener. I went up to her and rubbed her arm.
"Steve...Stop." She said still asleep. I rolled my eyes and shook her awake. She woke up in a panic. "What!?!?!? Oh, it's you." She said.
I rolled my eyes. "Can I borrow these?" I asked. She opened her eyes a little more. "For what?" She asked.
"I'm going out with Richie to Stanly's Bar Mitzvah," I said. "Fine." She said. I left her room and went back to the bathroom to do my hair.
I closed the door and plugged in both of them. I grabbed the straightener and straightened my hair.
I felt like it was to straight so I grabbed the curling iron and curled the tips of my hair. I felt like it was perfect now.
I unplugged everything and went back to Jenny's room. she was in the middle of changing. She paused.
I walked over to her makeup station. "Can I borrow your makeup?" I asked looking back at her. "Don't you have this stuff in your room?" She asked.
"You know mom and dad barely know I exist. So, of course, I wouldn't have anything." I said. "Fine," she said putting on her outfit.
"Date with Steve?" I asked. "Yup." She said. I put on some light pink lipstick and mascara. I turned around and got up.
"You look pretty. I should get you some makeup for Christmas." She said.
"no thanks, I'd rather have that cool polaroid camera...or some cool camera I can take pictures with," I said leaving the room.
I shut the door and walked over to the clock. It's almost been an hour. Time flies. I walk into my room and get blue shoes that match my dress.
I put them on and heard a knock at the door. "I've got it!" I yelled. I ran to my door and opened it.
I saw Jenny Running down the stairs. "I said I got it," I said walking down. "What if it's Steve?" she said. I rolled my eyes.
She opened to reveal Richie in a light blue tux and a forest green tie. I smiled at how we matched. "Wow! Matchy! I love it." He said.
I rolled my eyes with a smile. "Yeah. Yeah." I said dragging him to his mom's car. "You look very sexy in that." He said smirking.
I laughed a little. We got into the back seat of the car. I buckled my seatbelt. I looked over to Richie.
I then noticed something different and it wasn't the clothes. "Did you get new glasses?" I asked. He looked away from the window and had his attention on me.
He smiled. "Yup got them yesterday." He said pushing his glasses up. I smiled and reached over to him. I grabbed his glasses.
"Hey!" He said trying to grab them but missed. I put them on. "Sheesh, have your eyes sight gotten worse?" I asked looking over at him.
He squinted his eyes and blinked a few times. "You look hot with my glasses on." He said. My face got hot in embarrassment.
"O-oh?" I asked taking them off shyly. I wouldn't be this shy if his mom was around hearing this conversation.
I gave him his glasses back and he put them on. He looked at me. "Did I make wittle Nancy Wancy all shy." He said in a baby voice reaching over to pinch my cheeks.
I smacked his hands away. "Don't," I said all giggly. We laughed and played around with each other the whole way there.
We then came to a stop and we looked out. A lot of cars and people were around. "We're here." She said.
She then parked and we got out of the car. Richie kept almost touching the cars which made his mom mad.
She grabbed him and held his hand. He looked so embarrassed and I was no help. I kept getting close to his ear and whispering "Mama's boy". He kept a huge glare on me.
"Awe, did I make wittle wichie upset?" I asked in a babies voice. Once we got inside she let go of his hand and looked around.
richie crossed his arms. I just smirked and poked his cheek. "You can't stay mad at me," I said. "Oh, honey don't bother Richie just hang with me." Richie's mom said.
I looked up. I knew about how Richie was technically unplanned.
All they wanted was a girl. Then Richie came along and they still sorta acknowledge he's there but sometimes forgets about him.
That's why his mother drinks. So she can pretend Richies a girl. It's sad. That's why she loves seeing me over when she does see me over.
I look over to see Richie looking sad. "You okay?" I asked quietly. "I'm fine. Go hang with my mom. I'm gonna go find Stan the man." He said walking away.
I sighed and walked with Mrs. Tozier. We went through the crowd of people and got food then went and found a seat.
We chatted for a while until people started coming it sitting down. I had to embarrass myself a little by placing a foot on Richie's seat then remembering I had a dress on.
I put my legs together again and kept them closed. He finally came through the crowd and kept pestering me to move over a seat.
I went to the next seat and he sat down. I turned to him. "So, did you find Stan the man?" I asked.
"Yup! his hair is gelled down. It's not noddle head today." He said. I giggled and then quieted down when they were starting.
Stan came through and went to the podium. He looked so nervous. He opened the Torah and began to read.
Every time he almost messed up Richie almost spoke. I kept having to punch his leg. He finally got the hint and stayed quiet.
I then felt a hand on my leg. I looked over and saw Richie's hand resting on my leg. I looked around worriedly and pushed his hand off.
He put it back on but much closer up. I decided to let him but was still cautious. I decided to pay attention.
His reading was over and now all he had to do was make a speech. He sighed and took a deep breath.
He grabbed the microphone and put it close to him. He looked around cautiously like a bomb was in the room.
"U-um...Reflecting on what I just read...I like what it says about indifference. So, I would like to talk about it a little. Well, when you're a kid...you think the universe revolves around you...that you'll be protected, cared for...That you'll always have the same friends as you did when you were twelve...Then one day, something bad happens...You realize none of the caring is true. You wake up not caring about lives outside your own...nothing going on your front door matters anymore...y-y-you separate everything that matters to you. Neighbors, family, your friends...But, when you're alone when you're a kid...the monsters see you as weaker and they start to come for you. You don't even know they're coming closer till it's too late. So, they attack you before you can find out the truth. If any of you opened your eyes...If you really cared...You would see what we're going through and not blaming it on lame puberty and calling it a day. I guess indifference is apart of growing up." His father growled his name in anger but trying to act cool.
Everyone stood amazed at how Stanly was being. Stanly licked his lips and kept going.
"Becoming an adult...isn't about able to vote...or being able to drink or drive," Stan said almost angerly.
His father walked over and tried to grab the microphone from his hands. Stan pulled away holding on to the microphone with a death grip.
"Becoming an adult..." He started walking off still holding the microphone.
"According to the holy scripture of Derry..." He walked away to far and almost fell from the cord not being able to reach.
"Is learning not to give a shit." He said throwing the microphone down and storming off.
Everyone looked at him in disappointment. Except Richie and I. Richie got up clapping while I tried so hard not to get up and clap with him.
Everyone looked at Richie and gasped. Mrs. Tozier grabbed Richie and pulled him back into the chair. She looked like she was fully humiliated that Richie did that.
Richie came up to my ear and whispered.
"That was awesome."
