Chapter 37
Lydia- The Pet Communicator
Chapter 37
For a stray dog, nobody knows where he came from. Nobody knows what his breed is. Nobody knows whether he is sterilized or not. People have just given him an unusual name. But, one thing everybody knows that he is a nuisance.
He is a nuisance because he barks late at night and early in the morning. He is a nuisance because he sneaks inside the warm houses of people the moment he gets a chance. He is a nuisance because he steals food and he keeps strangers away from his street. He is a nuisance because he wants to be loved.
Sometimes we go to an extent that we forget they are also a form of life, they also need shelter to survive and they also need love. People who want to keep dogs go for an expensive purebred and forget the fact that there are homeless loyal dogs down the street that has to search for food every single day of their existence.
Stray dogs are the most suffering animals today. They are picked up by dog catchers using sharp tools and heavy rods which could even cause them severe injury. They get separated from their loved ones, and after taking them to the dog pound, they meet tortures. The caretakers starve them to death and poison them because of over filling or lack of space. They don’t vaccinate them too. Not to forget, they keep all the funds and donations in their pockets. You can only find some good pounds, majority don’t give a shit about the poor creatures. Very sad, but it’s a bitter truth.
Drake was snapping his fingers at me, when I got into my senses. “What?” I asked him surprisingly.
“We reached the dog pound Lydia. You haven’t said a word all the way and something seems to be bothering you. Is anything wrong?” I shook my head in refusal and looked at the exterior of the dog pound. The building looked like some haunted house. It had a big broken sign board above its main gate, written -Cambridge Dog Care. I gulped hard with fright.
The two dogs who brought us here barked, “Hurry! The gate is open, luckily.”
We got out of the car quickly and tiptoed inside the pound. The gate keeper was fast asleep. He was literally drooling in his sleep with loud snores. Eric started giggling when he saw the gate keeper and Drake glared at Eric heatedly. So, Eric walked away tight lipped.
When we entered, we saw no dog catchers or the care takers in the room. There were so many dogs locked inside the pound, all were barking with their own sad stories. I couldn’t listen to all at a time and it really bothered me.
The dogs who came with us, took us to his friend. It was a brown Labrador, just like Lucky and Garcon. It really touched my heart. A tear escaped my eye when I realized that I didn’t have the key to open all the locked dogs. All of them were so hopeless and upset. Not only that, they were also squeezed in with other dogs in small cages.
“Drake, I don’t know how to unlock these poor dogs. We need the keys to open their cages.”
“Wait here, Eric and I will go get the keys from somewhere.” Drake assured me.
In a little while, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I turned to look back, there was a care taker in his uniform. He was all grouchy and repulsive. He spoke harshly, “What are you doing here in beautiful red dress? Partying with the dogs tonight?” I felt like punching on his nose, but my eyes fell on the keys which were hanging out of his jeans’ pocket. In no doubt, I got the keys to release the dogs out.
“No. I came here to meet someone like you. What are these keys for Mr.?” I asked purposely.
“To keep these stray dogs locked in and far from beautiful people like you.”
“Where are the other keepers? You don’t want to go party tonight?”
“I am left alone here to do this stupid duty, but fortunately you came here to party with me.” He spoke, while touching my bare arm.
*THUD*
I punched him hard on his nose. With the sound of him screaming in pain, Drake and Eric hurried to me. I shrieked loudly, “He has the keys and there is no one, except him on the duty tonight!”
Drake took control over his hands, at the same time he punched the caretaker hard on his stomach and his nose. Eric pulled out the keys from his jeans and handed them to me. Both of the stray dogs, who were with us, attacked the caretaker too. I instantaneously started unlocking every dog, one by one.
All of the dogs ran out at once, after getting released. I even gave a sign to the two stray dogs to stop attacking the caretaker and leave immediately with their friend.
We heard continuous whistles which were blown by the gate keeper outside the building, as a group of dogs ran out all together. Drake pulled me and Eric out of the pound building hurriedly.
“Hey stop! I am calling the police! The gate keeper shouted, as he saw us running out of the gate.
“Sit in the car, do it quick!” Drake yelled at both of us, we jumped in the car and drove quickly back to home.
“Phew! This was close. I bet the police won’t leave me this time.”
“All the people are with you and majority wins!” Eric chirped. I checked my wrist watch to see the time. It was almost five in the morning.
“Drake, my father must be awake by now. We are so doomed.” I heaved out a sigh.
“He must be tired after doing some exercise with your mom, so don’t worry.” Eric teased.
“Eric! I thought you are so quiet and humble! Duh." I exclaimed.
“Everyone is quiet at the start, and then they show their true colors. Right, Drake?
Drake didn’t reply Eric, but he started rubbing his forehead with a moan. It seemed like he was having a headache.
“Drake, what’s up man?” Eric somewhat punched him on his shoulder. Drake stopped driving the car in the middle of the road, and rested his head backwards on his seat. “My head hurts Eric. I can’t focus.” Drake stammered.
We got out of the car and shifted Drake to the backseat. I wasn’t good in driving, but I managed to reach home with the help of Eric’s awesome guides. Shortly, I could see my father standing at the main door in his night wear, since I was a few minutes away from reaching home. Eric looked at me dreadfully, and I started adjusting myself to look better.
My father looked at us angrily from the top to bottom, as we approached him. Eric carried Drake in a bridal style.
“Drake is heavily drunk, huh? How dare you hang out at a night club whole night, Lydia?” My father spoke with anger. I shook my head nervously. I didn’t know what to reply.
“Did you drink too?”My father asked me immediately.
Drake started mumbling very slowly, but we couldn’t hear whatever he was trying to say. Then, Eric interrupted, “Well, Drake is not feeling good and we didn’t party all night. We went to rescue the stray dogs.”
“Come in.” My father spoke sympathetically.
We took Drake directly to our bedroom and put him on the bed. Eric and I went to my father outside, who was waiting for explanations from us.
“Eric, let Lydia explain. You are my guest, so I won’t be able to scold you.” My father informed.
“Daddy, I am sorry. Truthfully, we went to the night club for an hour only, none of us had alcohol too and when we were returning home, two stray dogs met us on the way and asked us for help. So we went all the way to the dog pound to free the dogs. A lot of things happened. Can I tell you more in the morning, please? We are extremely tired.”
My father nodded with a reply, “Fine, I trust you. I have taught you good manners all my life and I believe you will never disappoint me. Go to sleep both of you.”
After some hours of sleeping, I woke up with the noise of sirens outside my house and I assumed the policemen were here to take us. I hid behind the curtains to check out of the windows. As I expected, the policemen were doing some inquiry with my dad.
“Eric, Drake, wake up! The police are here.”
“Call Antonio to solve the matter please, I can’t get up.” Drake spoke lazily in his sleep. Eric didn’t move. I got irritated with Drake and Eric, both didn’t even bother about anything. So, I called Antonio without more ado.
Antonio received my call right away and spoke, “I know, I know, you need to come to the police department. I can’t break the laws, sorry. The caretaker is injured severely Lydia. Anyway, come here first and I will handle everything okay.”
My phone glided on the floor as my father along with a policeman, opened my bedroom door. “Arrest them!” The police officer yelled, and two officers came from behind my father to take us. My father couldn’t do anything, except stand at my door sullenly.
