Chapter 23

Lydia- The Pet Communicator

Chapter 23

It was almost a quarter to midnight, Drake hadn’t contacted me from the time when he left the house - unhappily. It really bothered me. I couldn’t even have forty winks. My father had to ruin everything for us by misunderstanding him, and on the other hand, Lucky’s death was a mystery to me. Who could have poisoned him and why? I couldn’t just sit back or wait for miracles to happen. It was high time to find out about Lucky’s murder.

I opt to start an investigation all by myself and behind my father’s back, because he wouldn’t let me face danger to any further extent. I wanted to investigate our car first, maybe I could get that poisonous spider or some evidence. I was stepping a foot outside my room when my phone beeped, and I was taken aback to see a message, again from Clara.

New message: Clara J.

Received: 11:54PM, 7 May

(1/1)

You must be thinking why I texted you after so long? Well, I overheard my father talking with Mr. Vivian about poisoning your father. His life is in danger. My problem was you, not your father. He is a nice man. So, I thought to inform you. Take care about him and sorry about the loss of your dog. I can’t tell you more about their plans. Oh! Your mom is the leader of the plans. Good luck with Professor Drake L-O-L.

Blood started to boil under my skin. I sought to throw my phone again in a frenzy, but I stopped immediately. I didn’t make a stupid mistake. I decided to save the message and show it to my father or to contact the police. Clara’s message was a strong evidence for me. I dropped my plan of doing an investigation and stayed back in my room. I wondered why Clara texted me to say all this? She isn’t even too stupid.

I sat on my rocking chair and kept reading Clara’s message over and over again. I wanted to reply her text message but, I restricted myself. I didn’t want to talk to her, or to show her that I am concerned about knowing more of their misdeeds. I had to wait for the morning to come and spend my whole night with difficulty, or no sleep at all. I kept my phone aside and memorized the times I spent with Lucky, while swinging on my rocking chair. The memories of him tore me apart with hurt.

I remembered the day Lucky came to me as a little puppy. I was really irritated with him at first but then, my love started growing more for him. He always protected me and my father from our enemies such as, Vivian and Clara’s father. He supported my relationship with Drake. He also helped me find who my mother and Ricky were going out with. Moreover, he waited for me in the rain when I was with Drake inside the restaurant, he didn’t even go to meet his bitch to keep me safe and he caught cold the next day.

Now, there is no one to lick all my tears away when I cry. There is no one to follow me everywhere and to give me the best company. I’m feeling all alone. It’s right when they say, dogs are humans best friends.

I grasped the arms of the chair tightly, and got up with a loud groan. I couldn’t imagine more of Lucky. I played some music at a high volume and grooved around my room frantically. I wanted to dance really hard, just to wash off the memories of Lucky from my head and get extremely worn-out, so that I could sleep for some time.

Without warning, my father walked in and stopped the music whilst grabbing my shoulders tightly in irritation. He roared in my face, “Lydia! What are you doing? Damn! Do you want me to drop you to a mental asylum?”

"Sorry daddy.” I spoke while lowering my gaze.

He continued, “I woke up with the noise of your loud music! Why are you dancing in your room like a mad zombie in the middle of the night? Don’t you get it?! You need to study for the exams by yourself after tomorrow and even harder, since Drake won't be there anymore. I’m tired of seeing you this way now.”

My father sighed heavily and sat on the edge of my bed, with his hands covering his face in disappointment. After that, he tapped on the bed for me to sit next to him. I sat close to my father and he pulled me into a tight hug. He explained,“I know that I have been rude with you and Drake. Tell me, what would you do if you were in my place? I don’t like hurting you all the time. It hurts me even more to see you cry. I am sorry,  it’s just that I am tired of the things happening around us.”

“Dad, I am fine. You misunderstood Drake and I am missing Lucky. That’s all.”

My father exhaled noisily, while responding, “Call Drake and tell him to meet me tomorrow.”

I directly spoke, “Drake isn’t picking up my calls dad, and I need to tell you something important. Please don’t react okay? Well, umm, someone is trying to poison you. Your life is in danger. Please be careful and don’t drink or eat anything from outside. I also believe the water which we gave Lucky was poisoned.” My father was traumatized, a tear escaped his eye and he was frozen. I couldn’t tell him the whole truth, it might distress him even more.

“How did you know?” My father asked curiously.

“I just know, please don’t ask me more. Please?” I pleaded anxiously.

“But, you can’t just hide things from me Lydia!”

I didn’t speak a word, although he kept on asking me to speak the truth. My father stood up from my bed snappily and yelled, “Go to sleep, we have to face a lot of more problems tomorrow!”

He walked out my room, while slamming the door hard and leaving me with unease. I got up the bed and followed silently behind him to check where he went. He entered the kitchen to have some water. I sighed in relief and walked over to my bed. I lay straight on my back with a pillow over my eyes to make everything dim around me. Everything was revolving around me because of exhaustion and I badly needed some sleep.

**Ding- Dong, Ding- Dong**

I pushed off the blanket and wore my slippers in irritation, as I got out the bed. I stretched my tight muscles and swore under my breath, “This stupid as*hole had to disturb my sleep!”

**Ding- Dong, Ding- Dong**

“I am opening!” I yelled rudely , while adjusting my hair and my clothes before opening the door.

I partly opened the main door to check who was in the doorway. It was my neighbor Amanda, standing there with a fake grin on her face and she had a cute Labrador in her arms, that immediately reminded me of Lucky.

“Yes, may I help you?” I asked graciously, while opening the door fully.

“I am here to leave Garcon, my dog, to your shelter because I can’t take care of him all day.”

“I am sorry, I don’t take Labradors anymore.” I replied. I couldn’t have someone reminding me of Lucky all the time.

“No one likes me.” The dog barked sadly.

Amanda thanked me, and started walking away in disappointment. I  gave Amanda a shout and called her back to give me the dog. “I will take him, don’t worry. He seems to be a really cute dog.” I spoke quickly, while taking him in my arms.

“Thank you Lydia. How much do I pay?” She asked.

“Nothing, it’s fine.” I replied back nicely.

Amanda thanked me again, and she left with satisfaction. I ruffled Garcon’s fur and mumbled, “Welcome to your new home sweetie.”

“I am so happy to have you as an owner. I know you had a pet named Lucky. I have met Lucky him once on the streets, where a dog fight was going on. He even told me good things about you.” Garcon yapped.

**Ding- Dong, Ding- Dong**

Who was it now? I was only five steps ahead of the front door, so I opened it quickly. I was surprised to see Drake at the doorstep, with two huge gift hampers in his hands. He was smiling graciously, as if nothing happened yesterday.

“Can I come in? Wow, you got a new dog.” He walked in happily, without waiting for me to welcome him in.

“Drake, are you okay?” I asked with irritation. He nodded - a yes with a smirk, and inquired. “Where is your father?”

“In his room, of course!” I pointed towards my father’s bedroom. Drake darted off in the direction of his bedroom, while I jogged behind him with Garcon in my hands. “Why didn’t you pick up my calls Drake? I was trying to call you the whole day, ever since you left. Didn’t you care to call? I was worried like sh*t” I asked Drake.

“I am really sorry babe. I felt offended and I was not in a mood of talking to anyone, so I had switched off my phone. Anyhow, I made up my mind and came early to check up on you, after realizing how stupid I was. You must have been so worried and see what I brought you two.” He beamed excitedly, while raising the gift hampers in the air. I simply shook my head with displeasure. His answers were illogical.

When we reached my father’s bedroom, it was left half closed and it gave me a wrong notion, since my father closes his door perfectly. We peeped in to see where he was, but naught was to be seen. Negative thoughts started playing on my mind, I got scared stiff. Drake stood next to me with his mouth agape and we both stared at each other blankly.
