Lydia- The Pet Communicator

Chapter 16

After dropping Lucky back home, Drake took me on a long ride to exactly - I don’t know where. At one time, I got scared with the darkness as we entered a cozy getaway, nestled deep in the woods. Also, the rainfall got less with time, there were only mild showers that gave the wet soil a magnificent and luscious smell.

We both were silent all the way. It felt quite odd after the kiss, however I couldn’t stop thinking about the wonderful person sitting next to me. He definitely brought back the colors in my destroyed life, yet he was still a stranger for me. I eagerly wanted to know more about Drake, like his family background and why was he doing a teaching job at such a young age. I never dared to ask him any day, it's just that I always trusted him with all my heart.

Drake stopped his car at one point, and then shoved out a white hankie from his pocket and requested me to turn my head around and also, to close my eyes. He draped the cloth material around my eyes carefully and carried me out of the car in his arms in a bridal style.

In a little while, he put me down and removed the material around my eyes.

“Surprise.” He whispered in my ear, while standing too close to me that I could feel his breath on my cheek. I was astonished to see the scenery around me. 

In front of me was a beautiful landscape of green trees and shrubs lined with gorgeous flowers that surround the crystal blue lake. The reflection of the moon was hitting the water, causing its ripples to be glittery. I could hear the birds sing their songs and multi colored fishes jumping playfully out of the lake and going back in. If we stayed longer, there might be a chance for us to see the wildlife roam the area.

“Drake, it’s beautiful. I loved it. Thank you.” I spoke while clapping my hands in excitement. Praying that, I didn’t scare the birds away. He gave me a huge grin, and asked me to walk extra with him, so we could sit somewhere peacefully for a while.

We sat on a rocky edge of the lake and the view was over-whelming. It was like a beautiful dream. I rested my head on Drake’s shoulder, and spoke “How do you know such a beautiful place? Tell me more about yourself Drake. I want to be a part of your life.

Drake looked away, he didn’t reply and his facial expression changed, to sorrowful.

“Is anything wrong?” I looked up at him and saw a tear roll down his cheek. The moonlight coming on his face made him look like a seraph. 

Why isn’t he talking to me, is he hiding something too?

I stood up and walked away. I wasn’t ready to get hurt again but suddenly, Drake grabbed my arm and pulled me into a tight hug. “I am sorry, please don’t go.” He spoke, while running his hand smoothly over my back, “I shall tell you everything today, let’s sit.”

I nodded, and we both sat in the same place again. Drake cleared his throat and spoke, “Don’t judge me until I don’t finish explaining everything please.” I didn’t give any comments, it was his time to do the talking and I assumed he went through a hard time in his life by the depressive look on his face. There must be something he was hiding from me, us.

“I come here every alternatively for some mental peace, after my girlfriend named- Lydia Robbins committed suicide out of depression six months ago. She had breast cancer, and we didn’t have enough money for her treatment. I promised her that I will find a job and she will get her treatment done. So I joined your school on that very day you met with an accident, that time your exams were going on. It was surprising that you both had the same names.

Everyone at school was talking about your accident, and I was scared for my Lydia. I wanted her to be safe and besides me always. Just after two days, my housekeeper called me to tell me Lydia has departed, and that she hung herself to death. I quickly rushed home and found her lifeless. She wasn’t breathing anymore, she was all pale. I was torn apart, because she was the only reason I lived for.”

Drake became silent. I looked at the tears flooding down his cheeks, however he kept on wiping them away with his shirt sleeves. Finally he wept, while hiding his face with both of his hands. I pulled him into a hug and tried to calm him down, but then he asked me to stop with a hand gesture. He continued,

“I didn’t know what I was going to do in life, I decided to hang myself to death too. But then, I got aspired by thinking, what if I could help the other cancer patients? They could be fighting fit because of my efforts! So, I motivated myself and moved on. I wanted to be a savior.

Now, the main story. Just after her five months of her death, your father came up to me and requested me to give you private tuitions. He told me everything about you, for example, you were six months in a coma, about your communication with animals and the depressing environment at home- after your mother left. Once hearing him out, I agreed to educate you, with all my heart and soul.

And I was taken aback when you opened your front door the first day. Everything had changed since then. I was traumatized, because you looked exactly like my Lydia!  You both had the same eye and hair color, even your laugh was similar to hers. Many times, you might have noticed me looking at you with affection right? I was not hitting on you! I saw her. Then, I decided to support you in every way and I didn’t want your life to end like hers.”

I interrupted Drake in between his story and mumbled, “I took everything the other way, I thought you had feelings for me Drake. I started liking you.”

Drake pouted and uttered, “ I told you to listen first! The scene has changed since a few days Lydia. I don’t see her anymore in you because, I started falling for you, Lydia PETER. I felt jealous whenever you mentioned Ricky’s name in front of me. I wanted to hear my name from your mouth every time and erase him completely from your life. When Ricky grasped your hand today, I wanted to take his life. I felt restless whenever I would be away from you. I couldn’t wait to see your face in the mornings, and my nights were sleepless, making me totally impatient. I couldn’t stop picturing you playing with your animals. Almost immediately, I realized that I wanted to be with you. I believe God gifted me with another better and beautiful Lydia.”

 Drake took my hand and asked me to stand up. As I stood up, he bent on his knees and posed. “Tonight , I am asking you with all my heart, body and soul, will you be mine forever, please?”

After hearing Drake's story, my heart totally melted.  Of course, I did like Drake a lot, but I was afraid to give him a commitment because of all the hurt and betrayals I got in life. I was scared of losing him as well.

“It’s fine. I don’t want to push you Lydia. Shall we leave?” Drake spoke immediately, while giving me a half smile and he started walking away. I knew he was hiding his tears from me.

“Drake, wait! I want to be yours.” I responded from behind him, and ran quickly into his arms. It felt so good to be there, he held me closer for some time and attempted to kiss me. Only then, I heard a wolf howling “Let’s chase these visitors away; they will block our way to the other land.”

I pulled apart from Drake, and grasped his arm firmly, “We need to move really fast.”

“Why?” He asked, looking puzzled.

Suddenly, his eyes fell on a pack of wolves coming towards. Drake shouted,” Holy sh*t, run!”

Drake held my hand compactly, and started pulling me away from there. The wolves started chasing after us much faster. “They are frightened!.” The leader of the pack howled. 

I stopped running, and started laughing at myself hysterically. Drake looked at me  with concern. “I forgot that I could talk to every animal on this planet. Wait and watch Drake, see how I chase them away.”

There were four wolves all big sized with sharp teeth and big eyes. They were glaring at us heatedly, while encircling us both. They were planning to attack us, I could hear their minds. Drake slowly hid behind me,  he was trembling out of fear. In fact, his teeth were gnashing too.

“So you think you can chase us away, huh? Not so simple wolfies!" I challenged.

“She can talk to us.” The she- wolf howled.

“Yes, I can! You better don’t scare us away and go do your job, you are spoiling our mood.”

Almost immediately, all the wolves started moving to their planned direction, however they turned several times to look at me. It looked like they were confused or maybe horrified to see me talking to them so gradually.

“Go and don’t turn back, or I will tell the humans where you reside, they will come to catch you mu-ha-ha.”

“Run guys!” one of the wolf howled and soon they were out of sight.

I gave out my hand to Drake for a high-five, but he held it down and pressed his lip with mines. “Let’s go home animal princess. It’s late.” He looked at the time on his phone and continued, “I already got three miscalls from your dear father.” He chuckled.
