Chapter 10
Lydia- The Pet Communicator
Chapter 10
Oh no, what to do? I should hit him in the head with my crutches, I thought quickly. I hurried over to my father, but before I could take action, Lucky ran up and sunk his teeth into Vivian's leg.
"Fu**! Son of a bi***!" Vivian yelled at Lucky. He dropped the knife and started rubbing the area where he’d been bitten.
"It’s true! I am a son of a bitch!" Lucky barked.
My father speedily picked up the knife and aimed it in Vivian’s direction.
"Dad, stop! Please!” I demanded.
My father glanced at me blankly. He hadn’t realized I’d been standing behind him, watching them fight; the knife dropped to the floor, and his mouth formed an “O” shape. Before anyone could grab the knife, Lucky picked it up with his teeth and brought it over to me.
"Thank you, my friend." I took the knife and ruffled Lucky’s fur. If it hadn’t been for him, someone might have been murdered.
"You piece of shit!" Vivian yelled at my father.
Calmer now, my father asked, "Why are you here? You took everything from me—what’s left for you to steal?"
"Because of you, I lost my job! Why’d you have to call the head of Blue Cross and give him that information? The only reason your wife left you was because you’re not a man!” My father clenched his teeth and got ready to throw another punch.
"Release the dogs from the shelter!” Lucky barked. “Quickly! If they all run in here, they’ll stop the fight!”
That’s not a bad idea...
I nodded and took a step towards my father. "Wait! Dad, before you do anything, please hear me out."
I leaned in and whispered Lucky's plan into my father’s ear. When I was finished, my father grinned and turned back to Vivian, ready to distract him a little longer. “I’m sure you can get your job back, and you’ve already taken enough from us, so why fight?” he said to Vivian. We can talk it out.”
As they conversed, I headed to the shelter with Lucky, where we talked to the other dogs about our plan. All they needed to do was attack Vivian and stop him from hurting anyone.
"We want to come, too!” the horses neighed. “One kick and he’s dead!"
“We have sharp teeth!" the cats meowed.
"We can distract him!" the rabbits grunted.
"No, that’ll be too suspicious,” I said, shaking my head. “If he gets seriously injured, the police will wonder why you guys only attacked Vivian.”
"Fine, but if you need us, we’ll be waiting,” the Arabian horse said.
I agreed and quickly freed the other dogs. Lucky had been elected leader of the dog team, so all the dogs followed him over to the house, barking, “Here we come, Vivian!”
I tried to keep up, but the dogs were too fast for me, and I ended up arriving a little after they did. When I entered the house, I could see them all attacking Vivian. He was screaming for help, and I knew he must have been in pain—dog bites are dangerous, and they can cause a nasty infection.
My father was laughing out loud. I walked over to him and gave him a high-five, then glanced back at Vivian; one of the dogs had broken the skin on Vivian’s arm, and it was starting to bleed.
"Okay, guys, that's enough!” I shouted. “Go back to the shelter!"
The dogs only became crazier. They had to have been holding a grudge against him, since nothing I said could stop them from attacking.
"That’s enough!” Lucky growled. “He’s bleeding, okay? Hurry back to the shelter!"
The dogs dispersed. When Vivian saw that they’d all left, he ran out of the house, clutching his arm; I noticed that it was bleeding severely. After reaching the door, he stopped and squealed, “I know that was your plan, Peter! I will get payback!”
My father flipped Vivian the bird, and he left angrily.
"Dad, that didn’t go very well,” I groaned, staring at the floor. “I feel really guilty.”
"He deserved it! And besides, we’re safe now,” my father replied. “Forget about him and we can have dinner.”
In a little while, my father and I sat down at the table, and we began to tuck into our meal. My father had ordered a pizza, but he’d also prepared some mixed vegetable soup all by himself.
"I’m sorry, I don't know how to cook, but I tried making soup for you. I guess I’ll have to learn cooking now, huh?"
I chuckled and replied, "I know how to cook, Dad, don't worry. We’ll both make it together."
After a silent dinner, we both decided to go to bed. It had been a rough day, and tomorrow I had to be up earlier than usual for my first private tutor session.
What will my new tutor be like? What will he think of me when he sees me talking to my pets? Lucky is always beside me, and he barks a lot if I don’t reply to him.
Later, I lay on my bed and enjoyed the feeling of cold sheets around my body. The view of the stars was beautiful tonight, which I could see through the window next to my bed. However, I had trouble falling asleep; though my eyelids felt heavy, my mind was full of thoughts, first of everything that had happened that evening, then of Ricky.
I looked at the beautiful ring on my finger that Ricky had given me. I missed him so much, but he hadn’t even called or texted.
Warm tears rolled down my cheek as I retrieved my phone and began reading through our previous chats. I wanted to text him and say that I still loved him, that I missed him more than anything, but my heart only stopped me. What people always said was true: love feels like heaven and hurts like hell.
I closed my eyes and recalled all the lovely times I’d had with Ricky.
"Ricky, give me my book back! Just let me read, okay? Besides, you need to leave—if your teacher catches you here, you’re totally doomed. I’ll just meet you at the canteen later."
"Nope, answer me first,” Ricky said with a smile. He was a little older than me, but he always ditched his classes so he could follow me around. “Will you have dinner with me tonight?"
"Sorry, I can’t. I have exams tomorrow, so I’ll be doing a lot of reading after school."
"Say yes or I won't leave, Lydia."
"Keep it down, you two!" the boy sitting next to us hissed.
I looked up at Ricky and nodded a yes. I kind of liked him, or maybe it was something else...
Unexpectedly, Ricky leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. It was our very first kiss, and it felt so good. His lips were soft, and he smelled like berries.
The memory trailed off as I fell asleep.
*************
Ding-dong
I woke when I heard the doorbell ring. Who could that be so early in the morning? Where’s Lucky? Dad must be fast asleep... I guess I’ll have to answer the door.
I stretched my body to relax my rigid muscles, picked up my crutches, and wandered out to the front door. Worried that it might have been Vivian or some other creep, I didn’t open the door fully, instead taking a quick look outside to assess the visitor.
The person on my doorstep was young, and I realized with a start that he was extremely good-looking. He had to have been around twenty-four, but I couldn’t have been sure, since I’d never seen him anywhere else. His hair was loose and sandy blonde, and it framed his tanned face perfectly; his wide eyes were a mesmerizing green, and his long eyelashes made the color pop.
His features were sharp. When he smiled at me, he revealed two dimples. I couldn’t help but stare.
"Is this Mr. Peter's house?" he asked, trying to distract me.
I nodded, speechless.
"You must be Lydia, then. I’m Drake, your tutor.”
This has to be a dream.
