chapter 23: watching over you

Listening to Soojin cry over the phone to someone -- perhaps Ae Ra -- Chan stood motionlessly against her door, staring into abyss upon trying to connect the bits and pieces to form a full conversation that could be taking place behind that door. He had not been there for the most part of the call, but when he had arrived, he had been hearing her sob uncontrollably.

She yelled out, "Are you kidding me? You were the one who implanted that idea in my head."

Considering the rest of their conversation, was she referring to the idea of her living with Chan? He bit his lip; even if that idea was not hers, she went along with it. That was equally inevitable.

"No! I told you to stop!"

Did she?

Chan's mind barely functioned, the only analysis being of the fact whether Soojin really wanted to ruin his life for money. And now that he heard her arguing with someone -- most probably Ae Ra -- over the phone about the idea being implanted in her head of her performing all these actions against him, he felt even more guilty.

Had he been holding so much rage toward her for something that she did not even intend to do?

"Ae Ra... I just want to end this deal."

He was right. It was Ae Ra. And he had been holding grudges against Soojin for no reason.

"Soojin," he whispered, wondering whether he should knock on her door.

He stood there for a while, until he heard the call ending with a ting and the phone being dropped onto the floor with a loud thud. He inhaled and exhaled, and knocked on her door, "Soojin?"

Moments later, she opened her door, and he did not know what to say.

All he saw was her tear-stained face and a grimace, and her pain stricken eyes and knotted eyebrows. She looked like she lacked all sort of energy.

Chan gulped, ransacking his brain to find an icebreaker. Yet, all he did was stare at her pained face as she waited in anticipation for him to speak something.

"Are you... okay?" he managed to slip, and she averted her eyes, "No... Thanks for asking."

As she was about to shut her door yet again, Chan gently grabbed her wrist and croaked out, "I'm sorry."

Soojin stopped and looked up at him, "What?"

"I'm sorry for doing this to you," Chan said, slightly boldly.

"It's... nothing new," she spoke, "People hurt others, and then they go. Some have the decency to apologise, but how does it make it right? Does it ease the pain?"

Chan stood quietly.

"I'm not saying that I haven't hurt people either," she said, "I've hurt you, too, and I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything. Everything, Chan. Everything I've wronged you for."

Chan did not get safe vibes from her words, "What do you mean, Soojin?"

"Ae Ra has..." she let a tear tricke down her face, "We aren't talking anymore. And I think I'm done."

"What do you mean by that?"

"Chan, don't talk about it. You won't be able to sleep at night again."

She shrugged his hand off her wrist, and turned to move inside. Chan immediately acted, entering her room and blocking her path, "Soojin, please don't tell me you're gonna do what I think you are."

"Does it make it easy if I don't say it?"

"Soojin..." Chan furrowed his eyebrows, "Don't do this. Please. You have..."

"I have your mistake inside me. I know, Chan. I know," she sniffled, "Do you not want it gone?"

"No!" he argued, holding her shoulders, "Soojin, are you listening to yourself? You are that same woman who fought for our child to live, and now, you're killing it? And yourself? Please hold yourself together. You aren't so weak."

"It's been a while since I've been holding myself together, Chan. I deserve a chance to break, too."

"You don't. No, you don't," Chan spoke, walking out of her door, "And you aren't closing this door tonight. I don't want to see you gone for something that isn't your fault."

"What are you going to do, Chan?" Soojin tiredly asked.

Since Chan knew that he, in no way, was supposed to be sleeping alongside her, thanks to his previous actions as well as her will, he ended up at her door, sitting on the floor against the doorframe.

"I'm watching over you."
