I found myself dreaming

In silver and gold

Like a scene from a movie

That every broken heart knows. We were walking on moonlight

And you pulled me close

Split second and you disappeared and then I was all alone

    Cinder woke up from her nightmare, the nightmare she had always had, but this time, she was walking with Kai, and he disappeared. When the fire appeared, she watched him burn, over and over again. She'd had this nightmare every night since their wedding. Overnight she went to sleep, curled against Kai's side, and every day she woke in silent tears, careful not to wake him, before falling back into a fitful sleep.

    Kai wasn't stupid. He knew Cinder wasn't sleeping, and he was concerned, but he knew she would tell him eventually. He knew she woke up every night, and every night he would hug her closer. Every night, nearly as long as he had loved her, Kai had woken up, breathless, after watch Levana kill Cinder over and over again. Every night it was a new form of death, and every night it was a new form of torture.

I woke up in tears

With you by my side

A breath of relief

And I realized

No, we're not promised tomorrow

    That night though, Cinder woke in tears, and she couldn't stop them. She knew she would wake Kai, but she couldn't bring herself to care. She had watched him die, over and over and over, burning, screaming, knowing she couldn't save him.

    She rolled onto her side, snuggling closer to his warmth, and opened her eyes, only to realize he was watching her. And Cinder realized three truths at the exact same time. One, she was still crying. Two, Kai was crying. Three, tomorrow is a not a promise.

    All the struggle, for the Lunar Crown, the problems in dissolving the monarchy, the last trip back to Earth, the proposal, becoming his wife, the Empress of the Easter Commonwealth, how many times did she nearly lose him? How many ties did they nearly die?

    "Kai?"

    "Yes, darling?"

    "Why are you crying?"

    "I..." for a split-second, he considered lying to her, but he realized he couldn't. "I had a nightmare. And Levana, she..." here his voice broke, and the previous whisper seemed deafening compared to the quiet tone he used now. "She killed you. Every night, she kills you. And every night, I lose you."    

    Cinder just nodded, her hair tickling his arms as she snuggled closer to him.

    "Cinder?"

    She had never heard Kai sound so defeated.

    "Yes, darling?"

    He smiled slightly but became serious nearly instantly. "Why are you crying?"

    "When I was younger, nearly every night, I had a nightmare that I was burning, but I know now that it isn't a nightmare, it's a memory, from when I was a baby, from when Levana..." No matter how hard she tried, Cinder couldn't make herself finish the sentence.

    Instead of answering, Kai pulled her even closer an pulled her chin up towards him, so her lips were a centimeter from his. And sweetly, softly, he pressed a long kiss to her lips.

    "She's gone, Cinder, she's dead and gone, and we're both safe."

    "Kai?"

    "Happy as a mechanic?"

    "A well off emperor, with plenty of girls throwing themselves at his feet, and a secure future."

    "A terrible leader, and stupid young man, with a war torn world, ill country, and way too much stress."

    "I guess we wouldn't be the same people."

    "Cinder, how did I get so lucky?"

    "That's my line."

    "Go back to sleep. We have a meeting with the Lunar representatives at 8:30"

    "Kai?"

    "Yeah?"

    Cinder didn't say anything, but instead wrapped her arm around his waist, took his hand with her metal hand, and said, "What if I lose you again?" Her words were so soft, he knew how much she hated to be so emotional wrecked, by a simple dream.

    "You won't."

    "How do you know?"

    "Because I'm right here, my queen."

    Cinder smiled sleepily and muttered, "Don't call me that."

    "I love you," they both whispered, their voices blending at the edges, becoming one and the same. And slowly, they both drifted off to sleep. When boring began to peek around the edges of the night, the woke, still wrapped in each other's arms, from the first nightmare free sleep in a long, long time.
