Chapter 5. The Defiance
not edited
The ride on the plane was long; tiresome, and most of all, lonely. It was a private plane with nice leather seats facing each other on each side of the small plane, with blonde waitresses and flight attendents checking in on your every move.
However I sat with Gavin, Dalton's younger brother as I had found out, I was more than aware of the fact that I had company. Unfortunately, my mind kept wandering off to other places, whereas my wolf wanetd to feel the presence of her newfound mate.
She wouldn't stop whining and pining! It was beginning to drive me insane and I honestly found myself frustrated with her thoughts. They were not only her thoughts, but mine too. Of course I wanted him near me, we now had a special bond that we couldn't break. Our bond was formed by a higher power, fate if you will. Even if we wanted to reject each other, which is like a way seal away the bond for a time, it's something I knew I couldn't bring myself to do.
Sadly, I found myself wanting to know about him. We just met! Well, sort of if you count me sneaking into his mansion and trying to steal an ancient book passed on from our ancestors. Did he even want to get to know me?
I still didn't understand why he was trying to take me away from all I once knew. Why take me away? I still wasn't getting straight answers.
"You even listening?" Gavin questioned. I snapped myself out of my thoughts, gazing at him with curiousity.
He hung his head, sighing, but didn't seem upset or angry.
"I was trying to ask you about movies, and if you like them, hate them, what kinds you like, er, hate?" He said, shrugging and leaning back in his seat. Before I could answer, a gorgeous exotic blonde flight attendent waltzed into the plane, and stood there with a smile. I stared at her and then Gavin, exchanging looks with each of them.
"Oh! Carter, meet Mia Lafaut Declairee."
Gavin looked like a kid in a candy shop as he openly smirked and oggled her planet sized boobs that seemed to overfill her navy blue tight dress. She grinned, her face flushing, but I doubt it wasn't any sort of attention she wasn't used to.
"Hello," She said, her voice perky and full of life. I smiled politely.
"I'll take my usual, scotch and water, hold the water," He said with a wink. I frowned in horror. Was that his take on flirting or, a pick up line or something? If that was, it magically worked but I didn't imagine it would take much to win over this exotic girl. I shrugged, imagining myself using that line on Dalton.
He'd probably just walk away while I'm in mid-sentence. I chuckled at the thought of anyone saying such an absurd thing to the big bad Dalton Valerio.
What's his deal anyways? Closed off, mean and scary.
"You got it," She replied chirpily before skipping off.
"Classy," I remarked flatly.
"Never trashy," He winked. I groaned. Man, he was just some character. I sighed, slumped in my seat, and peared out of the window.
"What's your deal, Carter Blake?" He asked. I turned my head to him lazily. "Hm?"
"Why'd you do it?"
"Do what?"
"Oh c'mon, don't play that game. Obviously I knew from the start you broke into Dalton's house. I'm not stupid, granted you did try a scent masker."
"But! You . . I, it's, wait how'd you know about the masker? It masks scents. How did you know I had some on me?" How was it possible? Did that strange woman give me a fluke? That woman, something was off about her.
"C'mon. Our pack is notorious for being great at almost everything. Tracking, hunting, fighting. You don't earn that title for no reason." He endede that brilliant explanation with a cheeky smile. I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms tightly.
"Whatever. I still don't understand how Dalton knew I was his mate since I wore the scent masker," I grunted.
He wrinkled his nose, raising a brow. I stared at him.
"Have your parents never told you about mates?" He asked with a dubious frown. I blinked.
"They died, so they didn't get the chance," I retorted, feeling a smile tug at my lips. I knew those words would make him feel uncomfortable. It made everyone uncomfortable. They didn't know how to reply, or act. His eyes widened and his eyebrows scrunched in pity.
"Oh I'm sorry-"
"It's okay, it was a long time ago," I told him with a shrug.
"Well," He cleared his throat," the mate bond is pretty incredible. Usually you find your mate from 16 to any age from there. You know it's them by their touch or scent. Obviously, their looks are appealing to you, whether you thought so before or after you discovered you were mates."
"So you can tell it's your mate by touching them? What, like those sparks and tingles?" I asked in amazement.
"I wouldn't know. I don't have a mate, but I'm assuming that's what that was."
"Did he feel it too?"
"Must've."
And then the conversation ended.
-
I guess I'd fallen asleep on the rest of the way. Not only did the large red hand print on my cheek explain that theory, but the fact that Dalton was now hovering over me, and staring at me like I'd grown a second head helped that hypothesis.
"We're here," He said gruffly, quickly turning away. On impulse, I reached out, and grabbed his shirt hem. He turned in an instant, confused. But I was also confused. Why did I reach out to grab him?
"Sorry," I mumbled, releasing although my fingers twitched.
Was that apart of the bond? Did that mean my wolf was missing his presence? I knew some about mates before Gavin explained earlier, but this was so foreign to me. His dark eyes stared at me for a second longer with blankness, before he turned.
"Your bags are already in the car," He said, his voice deep and alluring. I nodded, though he couldn't see since his back was facing me. They'd already gotten my bags? I must have really been tired.
He put his hands in his pockets, exiting the small plane. I stretched, making tiny dinosaur noises as I did so. Getting up, I waltzed out of the plane.
I grimaced, realizing it was freezing and all I had on was a long sleeve purple shirt, leggings, and black converse. Jee guys, thanks for telling me that it'd be butt ass freezing. Note the sarcasm. I found a jet black hummer, with Dalton speaking to a man beside the driver seat.
Anxious, I walked down the little stairs, and made my way to the car.
Once Dalton noticed me, he immediately got into the front seat, as if looking at me had set him on fire and the car was like his water pale. Annoyed with the pitiful amount of attention I'd been recieving from him, I trudged to the other side of the vehicle and let myself in the passenger seat.
"What are you doing?" He asked, his eyes glaring at me. I returned his gaze.
"Oh, you're talking to me?" I asked, feigning shock. He responded with a light growl in his throat. I felt the need for him to at least acknowledge my existence. We were mates, like it or not.
"Get in the back seat," He demanded, turning his head to me, as if daring me to challenge him. Challenge accepted.
"I'm not 5 years old. I can seat in the front eat last time I checked," I retorted. If he wasn't careful, he was going to see my stubborn side.
"And last I checked, this is my car, and you're acting 5. In the back. Now," He growled.
"No," I growled back, turning my body to him in my seat. His angry eyes locked with mine, and for a minute none of us moved. I could keep up this game for hours pal, so let's see who wins.
Shaking his head angrily, he turned on the ignition, and off we went. I smiled in my mind, happy I won this battle.
I slumped in my seat and glared out of the window. God, he was already trying to boss me around! I wasn't an ignorant little kid! He was the one who took me away and now he's snapping at me and we're not even at his stupid house or wherever the heck we're staying.
Bored within 5 minutes of our drive, I reached for the radio, but his eyes glared daggers me.
"Can I not listen to music?" I whined.
"I'd rather you didn't," He said, returning his gaze to the window. I frowned.
"Don't have such a stick up your arse, Jesus," I huffed, turning on the volume, hearing jazz play.
"Jazz music?" I asked him, but he said nothing and continued to drive. I guess I didn't mind jazz. I sat back in my seat and stayed silent the whole ride, wandering if we'd make any more contact.
"We're here," He grunted. I noticed we weren't really on pavement, and more so stony gravel on this new route. Oh God, is he taking me somewhere to kill me? Terrified, my eyes scanned the entire area in a frenzy.
There was basically just snowy forest all around us. It was actually . . . beautiful. For a second I forgot about everything and just focused on the scenery. It was so different from what I knew. The snow glistened in the sun the further we drove. Curious, I peered up ahead. My mouth dropped when I saw a large clearing of snow with the trees surrounding a beautiful house, no - mansion. Man, he really was loaded.
It was like a log cabin, but it was polished wood on the outside, and seemed at least 3 stories if not 4. It was overall huge.
He pulled into a driveway, where some other cars were parked. I unbuckled my seatbelt, still gaping at the house.
"Wow," I said to no one in particular, as I got out and landed on the crunchy snow beneath me. The fresh and crisp breeze carried my hair in his whisps, causing it to fly behind me. This place, was undoubtedly amazing. Perhaps being kidnapped and taken to the other side of the world isn't so bad.
I quickly turned when I heard the trunk open. I walked to the back, seeing Dalton grasp a bunch of my suitcases, and getting them out.
"Thanks," I muttered.
He said nothing, closed the trunk, and walked off to I'm assuming the front door. I frowned. A nice "you're welcome" would've been great.
I took my rolly suitcase, and my handheld one and followed him to the other side of the house, walking through the front door. I stared at everything. Though the outside was wood and seemed fit for a rich lumberjack, the inside was posh, and all the furniture, and walls were either white, clear, or black. Man, I wish I was this rich. Or maybe I don't. Maybe that's why he's such a stick in the mud, what with that angry demeanor thing he has going on.
"Your room is the third floor, last room at the end of the hallway on the right." Dalton lightly called out as he walked under the foyer, staring at me with his hand in his pant pockets. He seemed to be studying me. I frowned, suddenly feeling insecure with his gaze. He was a very attractive person, hell, he was sexy and hot. I was . . . messy and not. There are times when I feel cute, or pretty, but I know I can't compete with some of the girls that attend my school.
I thought I heard Dalton say something, so I stared at him. Yet he must've just muttered under his breath, for he continued to observe me.
"Right," I whispered, staring at me feet, and pulling my luggage with me to his double winding stairs. Wow, these stairs are probably worth more than my house back with my grandma.
I turned to see if he was still watching me, but he was gone. Shrugging, I continued to walk up the stairs, or rather try. You see, I'm a girl. That means curling irons, bags of makeup, shoes, the whole shabang. Obviously my bags aren't going to be light. I made it half way, needing a break. I slumped against the rail, catching my breath, before forcing myself to make it to the top.
When I made, I swear I could hear the holy angels singing and congratulating me. Granted I was a werewolf, that didn't mean my cardio was excellent.
Ready to just haul these bags out of a window somewhere, I picked them up despite the cries of my wimpy little arms, and turned right on the catwalk that split two ways.
I went down the hallway, finding another pair of stairs.
"Are you fucking serious?" I groaned, slapping my hand against my face. I groaned, yet nevertheless I put on my game face, and forced myself up the stairs.
At the top, I wanted to just give up and die in a hole somewhere.
I quickly found my room, set everything down, and made my way to the shower without glancing at the fancy arrangements.
