Theres gonna be a surprise POV >:)
Hi guys, missed you! I enjoyed writing the last chapter, hopefully I'll enjoy this one! Sorry for grammar mistakes!
Dalton's POV**
On instinct, I strapped the AK-47 to my back while Kaz strapped two golden pistols to her legs, along with a knife and sheathe on her upper left arm. Gavin, typically, chose his favored Kel-Tec SUB-2000 carbine.
Using guns was almost considered unethical for werewolves considering all we had to do to demolish a human body was sheathe our claws and clamp our jaws. The answer was resources. As much as I enjoyed old fashioned ways of tearing one apart, times were moving forward, along with technology. We'd be fools to attack those with our empty claws.
However in Nebraska I was sure than when I first became Alpha that I'd make just as many allies as I could to make up for the count of enemies that sought me out.
Some of these allied packs ran a gun cartel; the Grey Sky Pack. Their Alpha was a dear friend to my mother years ago, and through my inheritance of the pack I was able to make the alliance official. Their Alpha Lloyd Grey, became our closest friend and ally, and in return we made a deal. His guns for my strength. When they needed extra warriors to fight, or help them with some sort of dilemma, I sent over my transversal warriors to help with whatever is needed.
"Dalton," Gavin addressed me. My eyes averted to his as we shuffled through the shed. Kaz continued to search through the chest of guns while Gavin held his gun to his side.
"What do you plan to do after we get Carter back?" He asked, his dark eyes narrowing, waiting for my answer. Annoyed, I turned around and strapped a blade to my ankle, pulling my pant leg down. I hadn't though that far, but the fact that Gavin had proved to be an itch I couldn't scratch.
"What he must," Kaz answered for me, throwing her hair in a french braid down her back.
"Gavin, fetch the following and bring them in 3 minutes. I want Heather, Ygrette, Allasandra, Pedro, Jordan, Evan, Lucy and Treyvon. Heather, Allasandra, Jordan and Evan will keep tabs around us and make sure we can get in safe. They'll go in first. Ygrette, Pedro, and Lucy will have our backs as we go in. Treyvon will handle the system from afar, making sure to alert us when needed."
"Yes Alpha," He dipped his head, jogging to the stairs and out of the shed. I sighed, staring at the chest and the beautifully lethal guns it held on the inside, along with grenades, knifes, and an odd set of bow and arrows that no one dared to use. They were a gift from my mother before she died. The bow was cream and gold with leaves meticulously sculpted into it. Outlines of the bow were engraved in gold. The string was strong, and never faultered, not even when it should have. The arrows held sharp cream tips. Just a light poke would draw blood. I sighed, before I noticed Kaz eyeing me like a dog.
"Need I ask you to speak or are you going to do it yourself?" I asked with edge to my voice.
"Gavin's question still remains imprinted in my mind sir," She replied, staring at me with those blank eyes. "This life," She began walking around the shed, "isn't fair to Carter. She's young. She needs sunshine, laughter, friends, love. How on earth will she find that here?"
"You think I don't know that?" I growled venemously. Kaz put her hands up in defense, staring at the ground.
My anger and annoyance rose. No one knew how hard this was. I had to ignore a pull that my DNA urges me to indulge in. My body craves hers, as does my wolf. I knew this life wasn't fair for her nor was she fit for it, but she didn't have a choice. That night I caught her in my house, I knew. I knew she couldn't stay where she was. Her pitifully small pack could not hide her nor protect her like mine could. And yet look at the job I've done.
"I know Kaz ," I shouted, my frustration rising by the second. Defensive, she held her hands up, knowing my settings were off. "I know that this isn't fair! I did this to her! I already know, so shut up and quit reminding me," I replied in anger.
"I apologize, Alpha, I've overstepped my boundaries."
"That you have, and make sure it doesn't happen again," I growled. She nodded, wandering up the steps and outside. I took a deep breath, putting my hands on my hips.
"Dalton! Everyone is here and ready to go." Gavin called from outside. Determination overwhelmed me, and I soon forgot about what we had fought about. I marched up the steps, welcoming the fresh air. I looked up, rain clouds forming instead of snow falling to the ground. I stared at all the members of my pack that were about to embark on this with me.
"Treyvon," I stared at the young male who's glasses pushed up against his nose, "will hand you all transmitters. If he needs to reach you to tell you where Carter or an enemy is, he will .If you need to shift, do it. And kill anyone who gets in your way." Ygrette, Lucy and Pedro smiled deviously. Those three had a knack for missions and fighting.
"Let's move," I growled to the group before we took off to ours cars.
Gavin and Kaz seated themselves in my porche, Kaz taking the front seat much to Gavin's dismay. I watched the other packmates from out of my tinted windows. Each one got into a car of their own with no fear, only anticipation.
I gave a ghost of a smile, but it faded just as soon as it had arrived.
As I started up the car and led the way to our destination, my thoughts wandered over to Carter. She'd never forgive me for this. My secrets, my enemies, all of which were returning from a dark cave in which I'd buried them were coming back to haunt me. I gripped the steering wheel, checked behind me for my pack, and continued to drive in silence with the two in the back.
"Alpha," I heard Treyvon signal on my radio. Kaz, interested and alert, reached for the volume, turning it up.
"What is it?" I replied.
"Exact location is a warehouse that breaches just barely in our own perimeters and boundaries. It seems to be near a harbor, henchmen are everywhere." He replied into the radio transmitter.
"How many?" Kaz asked, leaning into the speaker. I glanced at her then at the road.
"Henchmen that keep bordering the docks, about 15. I'm in the inside system, but I can't get a hold of their security cameras. I can tell you they're harboring some weird chemicals in there," Treyvon said, sounding confused at the end.
"DNA transfusions . . ." Kaz whispered, hair eyes staring mine down.
"Special weapons?" Gavin asked from the backseat.
I turned the steering wheel as he spoke.
"Yes, but you already know that. Neurosimulation darts. It'll barely prick you but the pain is the equivalent of getting shot with an actual bullet."
"But?" Gavin asked.
"But some of the darts have a toxin that eats away at the targets cardiovascular and muscular system." Treyvon said.
"Fantastic," Gavin retorted with a fake smile and thumbs up. He casually put his arms behind his back and leaned against the black leather seats.
"Let me know when you get into the camera system and locate where they're keeping Carter."
"Yes Alpha," he soon ended the call.
I took a deep breath. They were mixing their DNA with animal DNA. These people aren't werewolves, but they do have the minds and manipulation of of my kind. The DNA mixing will enhance their senses, giving them much more power.
I glanced at Kaz and into the back mirror at Gavin. Each had a nostalgic distant look in their eyes and I could tell they were thinking about the past just as much as I was. It was painful, not just for me but for them as well.
"If we see Vince, what do you want us to do with him?" Kaz asked.
"Depends. Either he slips out of our hands-"
"Again," Gavin spit out in hatred. I ignored his arrogant comment.
"Or, we're able to get him alive. He wants revenge, he'll do anything for it. I don't blame him, but it doesn't score him points for taking Carter. Understandable, yes, okay? No."
Kaz's POV***
Staring out of the window, I watched the trees rush past us. We left city life and headed west for this harbor, all to save Dalton's mate. I'd been with the Valerio brothers since I was a little girl.
When I was younger, my mother was murdered, my father soon after. I was 7, and had no choice but to watch the life fade from my parents' unmoving bodies. Can you imagine a 7 year old sitting in a pool of thick, suffocating blood rather than in a bathtub, playing with a rubber ducky?
Terrified, I sought refugee through Dalton's pack. His father took me in, watching over me. I'd learned to respect both Dalton and his father. Through the years, I've learned many things about Dalton and Gavin.
Gavin was like his mother. Warm, outgoing, caring and carefree. Dalton and him were complete opposites. Dalton would rather spend the evening helping train our younger pack members, taking on the responsibilities of an Alpha whereas his brother would much rather use his money to his leisure. The two were complete opposites. Dalton was a rock and Gavin was a rainbow.
However when it came to things they cared about, they were the same. Protective. It was the one of the few things that signified they were brothers other than their looks.
I only knew of one thing they each had cherished dearly that they'd risked their lives to protect. One thing was their mother. Oh did they love their mother. She was beautiful on the inside and out. The pack yearned to be in her presence was enough to turn an awful day into a sun shiny day. She was a Luna like no other. She didn't let Dalton's father ever over rule her. The two were equals, and no one was complaining about that. She was fierce, strong, smart and maternal to the pack, treating everyone like they were her kids. Of course the love she held for Dalton and Gavin were held to higher standards. When she died, the boys changed forever.
Dalton climbed into a shell, and hasn't come out since. Determined to protect himself from feeling, he refused to let anyone in ever again. Gavin was torn up, consumed by a depression that caused many to lose their recognition of the young and innocent boy their beloved Luna had raised.
Still, the pack never lost sympathy nor disrespect for the Valerio boys. For that I can't help but love this pack even more than I do.
And now here we were. Saving the cold, uncaring Alpha's mate. A girl who needed someone to be there for her. At first I felt bad for Dalton. Keeping his identity a secret to the girl all while ignoring his pull to her. Now I pitied her. She was a young she wolf who needed fresh air, freedom. Not this hidden mundane life of darkness and fear.
If Dalton still refuses to open up his past and self to the girl, I will have no pity. If the past repeats itself, then it's because Dalton made the same mistake.
"We're here," Gavin announced, breaking me out of my thoughts.
We were in a shabby parking lot on a hill that overlooked the harbor, with a large building resting just where the wooden docks began to zigzag and connect to others. Boats jostled around in the icy water. I shivered, imagining what it'd be like to fall in there.
I looked over at Dalton's hardened face, his jaw constantly clenching and then relaxing. His pale eyes stared straight ahead and his messy hair was all over, but it didn't look bad on the guy.
"Heather's group will surround the docks first and make sure no one is following Kaz, Gavin and I." Dalton said, hoping everyone had heard him through these ear pieces Treyvon had given us.
"Affirmative," Heather soon replied through the transmitter.
"Get yourselves ready. This isn't going to be simple, but we'll make it as simple as possible," Dalton said, unbuckling his seat-belt. Nodding, I unbuckled as well, getting out of his car. The cold breeze his me hard, making me squint. We were near freezing below temp waters, of course it'd be even colder here.
"Fuck it's cold," Gavin said, appearing at my side. Dalton was on the edge of the small hill, crouching and keeping an eye on the warehouse. I sighed.
Gavin rubbed his hands together, shoving them into his hoodie pocket. I kept my eyes alert.
"Hey, do ever think about your mate?" Gavin asked me, his eyes fixated on his brother who's back was to us. I lolled my head back, relishing the breeze.
"Who doesn't?"
We lay in a silence for a second, before I stared back at Gavin. His eyes were glued to his brother's unmoving frame. I frowned.
"You like Carter."
"Is it that obvious?" He asked with a smirk, returning his dark eyes to mine. I shrugged, leaning against the car and crossing my arms.
"You might as well make a sign. Props for not kissing her though," I replied in monotone. I wasn't very sociable like Gavin. It's not like I hid my emotions like Dalton, I just didn't have them. They were taken from me when my parents died. Call it PTSD if you want.
He chuckled. "I'd be dead the second I thought of even doing that." I smiled.
"And yet you're still alive."
"And yet I am still alive," He repeated, sighing.
I did often wander what it would be like to have a mate. I wasn't lovey dovey. I had just about as much emotion as a brick. How could I possibly love someone to the ends of the earth when I barely felt sympathy for others. I could take the life of someone easily if I had to if under Dalton's orders.
"I'd never do this to her ya know," Gavin said once more.
"Your brother chooses to handle things the way he feels he should. When you find your soulmate, then you'll handle things the way you feel you should. Everyone's different, and dealing with their own things, so don't be quick to judge," I reminded Gavin. He rolled his eyes playfully.
"What are you, my packmate or my shrink?" he teased.
"Hey, you two!" Dalton called in a rushed whisper. Snapping out of our conversation like it never happened, we quickly paced to Dalton's side, crouching low.
"Look," I pointed to the dock, seeing a man with a leather jacket tied around his neck and also tied to a pole.
"Ygrette," I whispered.
"She's in. Now it's our turn. Kaz, you're smaller," Dalton finally tore his eyes away from the harbor and the warehouse. I took a second to examine him. His eyes were a light creeping red on the rims, and his brow lines were deeper than I'd seen in a while. Not since . . .
"You busy staring at butterflies or something?" Dalton's hard eyes glared at me. I stared down, shameful. This wasn't the time to be examining my Alpha's face.
"No, I apologize. Won't happen again," I murmured.
"Make sure it doesn't," He hissed, sighing and rubbing his T-zone. "Like I was saying," His eyes cut to me before staring at the warehouse once again, "Kaz, you'll slide in from the top of the building. Treyvon informed me that there was an air vent at on the left wing of the building. Get in, you're my birds eye view until Treyvon is able to hack into their cameras. Got it?" He explained all in one. I nodded.
"Gavin, you're with me till further notice."
"You got it." He replied, his eyes also plastered onto the building.
-
I stared up at the building. Thanks to Heather and her team of murderous beasts, not a single one of their henchmen were up and about, but rather in a body bag floating down the harbor.
I was swift. I was agile. I looked up again. The building was at least 70 feet tall. I shrugged.
[Well, you have to start somewhere] My wolf chuckled. I growled lightly in throat. She was right.
I reached my hand up, grasping the plaster and digging my claws in. I growled at the feeling of my nails being ripped apart. Determined, I placed my foot on a gutter pipe, but slid down. Okay, this one was going to be a challenge.
Unknown POV*** (Will be determined)
"They're coming for her," Jack said, breaking me out of my haze. I smiled.
"I know." I replied.
Jack's brown eyes narrowed as he crossed his arms and furrowed his brows. I sat back in my chair, glancing at my computer. On it was an image of Carter, sitting in her chair. Well, video moreso. Her head was lolled back and flies buzzed around broken glass that held "food" on it. The girl was much stronger than I anticipated, but then again what would I expect from a Valerio's mate?
8 days, and she's withstood the urges to eat. It's a dumb decision however I don't deny that I don't understand it. Smart yet dumb. Strong yet weak. I laughed out loud, Jack's eyes rolling to the back of his head in annoyance.
"Oh, don't be such a sour puss Jack. Everything will be fine." I assured him.
"Whatever man," He growled.
"Hey, shut it!" My mood snapped within an instant, causing Jack to lightly step back, but keep his hardened gaze.
"I make the calls. You obey them without question nor opinions. Do I have to repeat myself," I paused, getting up from the chair and slowly walking over to Jack. His eyes stayed strong but I could tell his skepticism was rising with each slow step I took towards him.
I stopped a foot in front of him. I brought out my Hunter's knife from my back pocket, lightly touching the tip of it to his jugular artery. He swallowed nervously, his head jerking back. I grazed his skin with the blade, bringing it to his navy green shirt hem, lightly lifting it to reveal a scar.
"Do I have to repeat myself," I started, brushing the knife over his tremoring skin, "after the last time?"
Jack's adamsapple bobbed up and down while he swallowed and stared down at me.
"No," he mumbled, eyes blazing with hatred for me. I grinned, backing away and lifting the knife. "Good. Now then, get going and make sure those demonic band of beasts don't get inside. I'll start prepping Carter but it'll be rough."
Everything was so close to falling into place. I sat back down on my chair, waiting for Jack to leave. I grinned ear to ear, excited to see my favorite cousins again.
