Chapter 1. The Sneak

Not edited

"You're going to regret this, please! Please, don't do this!" Nat whispered as we continued to drive. It was late and the night had just settled upon us.

"Nat, everything will be fine," I chuckled. Though I was nervous, I wouldn't let her see that side of me.

"No, no it won't be! You don't know anything about this Alpha! He could kill you if he finds you with the Code in your hands, let alone in his house! I think you've forgotten this is illegal!" She shrieked. I groaned. Nat slumped into her seat and glared out the window. I looked up through the sunroof as we turned a corner, keeping my eyes on the night sky.

"You don't know him either. Besides, no one can catch me. I've snuck into our school millions of times during this hour and not once have I been caught," I said with pride.

"It doesn't matter. This is different. He's one of the most strongest Alpha's in our fucking nation Carter! I know you're one of the best fighters in our pack, but this a whole different story!" She squeeked. I rolled my eyes.

"Puh-lease Nat. You know I'll be fine," I say with a laugh, but it dies down once I pull into a gated community. I grab my phone out of my cupholder and stare at the message Taylor Quinne gave me.

"The gate code is 2454," I mutter before I lean out the window, embracing the cold air. My hand outstretches, and I quickly punch in the numbers on the post. My shaky finger presses enter, and soon the golden gates begin to open.

"Please, you can back out," Nat whispered in a hushed tone.

"Too late. Besides, I'll be fine!" I reply with a nervous chuckle. But of course who wouldn't be nervous? I was sneaking into our rival pack's house, with one of the most strongest Alpha's in the nation possibly walking around inside. And what's worse is that I had to steal a book forbidden to read by me.

"If he catches you . . " She trailed off.

"He won't. If he does I'll punch him in the throat. Now cheer up, and have faith in your best friend," I demanded as we drove slowly up a hill. She stayed silent.

I glared ahead when I saw a group of teens standing around, with Taylor Quinne smirking in the middle. Growling, I parked a few feet behind them and got out.

Nat followed me as I walked up to Taylor with confidence.

"Surprise surprise, she showed up," Taylor said, chuckling. The group of at least 6 teens from her pack behind her snickered.

"Yeah which I wouldn't expect you to do. Where's his house?" I asked with a growl.

She smirked and started to walk up the hill, me at her side with everyone else trailing behind us.

"I gotta say Carter Blake, I'm shocked you came," She said with a grin towards me. I sneered at her.

"I'm not afraid of your stupid Alpha," I retorted as I worked my legs up this never ending freaking hill.

"Oh, don't say that one too soon. Okay," She stopped and turned around.

I saw Nat in the small crowd with her hands in her hoodie pockets and stared up at me with wide eyes. I gave her a look, saying I was sorry but I had to. Which I did. I looked up and stared at these two bright stars. I like to think that those two stars were my parents.

They both died when I was 9. It was hard to hear about. I heard they were on a mission to create an alliance with another pack a few states away. I never wanted them to leave, but they swore they'd be back within a few days. They go, and next thing I know, I'm sitting in a room with a packmate telling me that my parents went missing on their way there. No one knows how. And I didn't bother asking. Because that was just how it was.

"Here are the rules," Taylor announced to the small group. I turned to face her, hands on my hips, and ready to go.

"You cannot be seen, and cannot leave the house until we see that book. Got it, Blake?" She said with a sugar sweet grin. I growled when she said my last name.

"Got it, Quinne," I retorted.

"His house," She said, turning her body,"is that one," She pointed to one across the street.

My mouth dropped. I knew the houses here were huge but damn! It wasn't a house, but a fricking mansion! Clearly he made a lot of money, which only meant he was also very powerful. I gulped, glancing at the large padio and huge white house.

"We'll be waiting here." She said with a wink. I growled.

"Well? Get going! The book should be in his office. Which I assume is the top floor to the left, with the balcony. Oh and, you have an hour and a half. Don't make us freeze." She said with a grin.

"Don't worry, your heart will do that before the cold does," I said gruffly as I flipped her off. I glanced at the house. I took a deep breath.

Here we go.

I quickly ran across the dim lighted street. My wolf was stirring inside. We both knew this was a crazy thing to do. If I got caught how in God's name would I explain to their Alpha that it was a dare?

I came to a halt when I was on the drive way looking up at the mansion. Nervously, I turned my head to see Taylor Quinne and her groupies smirking, yet all seemed curious as to what I'd do. Nat stood there with wide eyes.

I smirked at them all, ready to show them I could do this. I turned towards the house. It was now or never. I slowly walked up to the porch, and found myself in front of the door. I reached my hand out to touch but I realized this was an Alpha of a very powerful pack. I was sure he wouldn't just leave his door wide open.

Backing away, I came the gate on the side of the house. Crouching low, I jumped up and grabbed the tall wood fence, before hoisting myself over. I landed on my feet, one hand platformed on the cement. I gasped as I realized I just snuck into my rival pack's backyard. Grinning, I remembered my mission. Get the book.

I couldn't help but admire the large pool, with a hedge maze. I stared at it in awe. It was large, and the bushes stood at least 10 feet tall.

[Guit staring and go for it,] My wolf growled. I nodded and walked around the edge of his fancy pool, and made my way to the sliding glass door. I tried it, but it was locked. I peered inside, pressing my nose up the glass. All dark.

I backed away.

"How the hell do I get in?" I whispered to myself. Looking up, I searched for a way to get onto the roof. I backed up, before I ran to get a head start, before I quickly hit the wall with my foot, and used my momentum to grab a pipe before I halled myself up. I groaned at the amount of armstrength this required.

I pulled myself up before flipping onto the small little side roof.

I took a deep breath, making sure I hadn't made too much noise. I sat for a second before I stood up and smiled. There was  window that was just barely open.

Some Alpha.

I crouched over to it before I put my hands on the ledge, and painstakingly lifted it. I went so slow, careful to avoid making too much noise. As soon as it squeeked at half way, I gasped in fright. It was a shrill screech and made tremors fly up my spine.

I decided this was far enough. Sitting back, I put in one foot, then the other, and slowly lifted myself through.

"Fuck!" I whispered to myself as I cut my neck on a sharp piece of wood sticking out from the window. I covered my mouth, mid way into through the house. I quickly fell through, landing with a thump. I stayed on the ground, covered both my mouth and my slightly bleeding neck.

I stayed silent for a while and counted my blessings. My fall was loud enough for all of China to hear. I had to be quick. No time for resting. I slowly got up, and allowed my wolf's night vision to sink. Everything became a tad bit brighter in my eyes as I got used to the feeling.

I realized I was now in the bathroom. It was small, but nice and tidy. I quickly walked over to the counter which had a mirror above it. I looked at myself, craning my neck to see blood smeared. I sighed.

The sound of footsteps coming from below made me freeze. As though I was paralyzed, I held my breath and strained my ears. The Alpha was awake. And if he found me . . . I don't dare think of what would happen.

I hear him walk outisde through sliding glass doors and I realized that was my chance. I grabbed the bathroom door nobs and let myself out. I closed my eyes, imagining where I was. I need to get upstairs. This was a three story house. I needed the room on the left, with the small balcony. Right now I was on the other side of the house.

Opening my eyes, I relied on my instinct. I left the bathroom and came into the hallway. I didn't hesitate turning to my left and jogging down the hallway, but not before glancing behind me.

I found a door on the right that was next to a freaky painting of two wolves fighting, with two naked men on their backs holding spears. On the two wolves fighting, they had the faces of man, and on the two men on their backs, they had the faces of the wolf. Shivering, I opened the door.

I frowned when I realized it was creaky. Why was everything in this beautiful house creaking like it was made for a horror movie?!

I jumped as I heard the door's below me slam. My heart began to pick up its pace and for a minute it seemed like that was all that I could hear, other than the sound of my blood rushing to my head.

[Time to go!] My wolf chimed. I agreed with her. This room was a guest room, or at least seemed like one.

[We need that book!] I roared.

[Just leave it!] She argued. I said nothing back, and instead of running to the bathroom and fleeing like any sane werewolf, I continued my trek, not stopping until I reached the end of the hallway where a grandfather clock met me. I froze as it ticked. How has it already been 30 minutes? It's 12 now, and the eerie sound of the clock caused a certain terror to shoot through me.

Ditching the door and leaving it ajar, I turned my back. That's right! She said the one on the left! As I heard the footsteps clamber around downstairs in a hurry, adrenaline kicked. With haste, I flung open the door, and stepped in.

I closed my eyes, inhaling. Well whoever Alpha What's His Name was, he had a really nice smelling office. I looked around, acknowleding the cubicle of a room. There were large book cases plastered on each wall, with a small leather couch pressed up against one clear one. Above  it were plaques or pictures of old people  - almost like portraits. I turned around, averting my eyes to the desk. It was large, with papers scattered, pens neatly placed in a pen holding thingy.

"Dalton . . . Valerio?" I whispered, looking at the card on his desk. I took a step to his desk, feeling as though I was invading a large sense of privacy.

[Well, we came this far...] My wolf muttered. Smiling, I reached for a drawer, only to see it held more boring papers and folders. I closed gently, listening for the Alpha. I could hear his steps.

He was coming up the stairs! Panicked, I opened another drawer, then another. But all that was in them were files! I froze in place, hearing his footsteps lightly pace into the hallway. Horror stricken, I looked for a window in his office, and found none. Silently groaning in fear, I ducked and scurried under his desk.

I waited a second before I looked out from the small space underneath, only to see a pair of shoes walk in. My eyes widened to the point of no return, and all I could hear was the sound of my heartbeat. For some reason, the smell of pine and mint grew stronger. I closed my eyes, calming myself down. The shoes were leather, and smelled of money.

He took another step, resulting in the ground lightly creaking. I put my hands over my mouth, ducking even more. All was silent, except for the sound of fearful heartbeats, and heavy waiting leather shoes.

I looked up from the desk. If he came to this side, my chances of not getting caught dwindled into single digits. My eyes caught sight of a large black book, sitting on top of a bookcase. I gasped lightly, before clamping my hand over my mouth. The shoes turned in an instant and for a second, coming to the front of the desk.  I knew I was a goner.

Thinking fast, I grabbed my phone out of my pocket, followed by a wrapper with my old gum in it. I peeked below the desk outstretched my hand,  and hoisted the gum wrapper into the hallway. I retracted my hand as though it had been struck by fire, hoping . . . no praying, he didn't see it. His shoes turned within a second and began to make their way out of the room, closing the door.

[Oh my god . . . we're still alive] My wolf whined. Shocked, I didn't waste a single moment getting out from underneath the desk and stand up.

The book cases were tall, but that had to be the book. And I'd do aything to get my hands on it.

With determination, I placed a foot on one shelf, and my hands above, gently hoisting myself up. I reached up, extending my fingers, but only managing to barely scuff the book. Frustrated, I reached further, feeling as though my limbs would rip apart. Relief filled me as my thumb and fore finger grabbed hold of the book.

As I tried to get down, the sound of my phone erupted through the room. It had to have been Taylor! That bitch!

Horror stricken, I reached for it in my pocket to stop the thunderous noise, but in effort to do so, the worst thing possible happened.

In a flash, I was on the ground with a books falling on all parts of my body. My phone was off but my fear was on like how it had been all night. The sound of the door opening in a fast movement made my head reel. My heart beat picked up and I felt myself growing sick. There was a man with eyes glaring at me.

In a swift movement, my hands grabbed the Code which just so happened to lay on top of the pile. I got up, and kept my back to the Alpha. If he saw my face, I'd be dead.  I was officially, one hundred percent terrified.

"Who are you?" His dark voice sent a tremor down my spine.

I gulped, marred by fear.

"Do not make me repeat that."

His voice was rich and secretive. It was so pleasurable I found myself wanting him to shout at me.  What the heck?

With swift thoughts running around my head, I ducked down, picked up a few books with my one free hand, spun, and threw them. As the Alpha was blinded only by a second, I used this time to hurl the large book over his head and into the hallway.

As the books dropped after he blocked himself, he turned in confusion. Gulping, I sprinted towards him, dropping and sliding just in time to get underneath his legs and to the book. Wow, for once all those training lessons came in handy.

I grabbed the book and began my race to the stairs. I sensed him hot on my trail, so I jumped down the last four steps. I smiled as I ran to the open door. Reaching for it with hopeful fingers, my collar was pulled and I flew back. My back hit the wood floor like a stone on pavement. The book flew from my hands and onto the ground. I saw him slowly walking towards me, but I hastily turned and began to crawl my way to the book.

But my foot was grabbed and I was tugged backwards. I let out a raw snarl of frustration, kicked and squirming as I was dragged from the book. I was left on my stomach as he reached for it. Again with my fast thinking, I slid my foot on the ground, sweeping him off his feet. He stumbled, enough for me kick his back, making him land on all fours.

Okay. It was definitely time to forget that book.

I decided my life was worth more.

I turned on my heel, and made my way towards the front door.

I opened it, and flung myself down to see an empty driveway without Taylor or her friends.

"Carter!" I heard someone shout. Continuing to run down the street, not looking behind me, I sprinted as fast as I could to Nat and her car.

"Holy shit, get in!" She growled. I grasped her door and fumbled it, turning around to see the Alpha of Tyalor's pack running down the hill towards us. Getting in, Nat took off while the door was still open.

"Did you get it? What happened?!" She asked as we sped down the hill in her car.

"No," I whispered, holding my chest and looking in the rear view mirror. The Alpha's body getting smaller and smaller as we drove further. He just stood there.

"You could've been killed! I'm never letting you do anything like this every again dammit!" Nat growled as she sped out of the gates.

I took a deep breath to calm my beating heart and pulsing nerves.

Sorry this took soo long to make but I wanted it to be good plus my computer keeps breaking like the space bar and bottom keys don't work, so I'm really sorry!!
