Lumniroraiyan lore time! (That's a mouthful!)

The city of Athenya extensively uses something called Void Magic, the Minecraft equivalent is the block tile.end_gateway.name (end gateways).

If someone uses Void Magic too much it will corrupt them, causing their blood to look like Void:

This is normal and no cause of concern, but very rarely the corruption can go further...

So that's what this post is about!

(Void + Fauna)

Name: Voiauna VOY-AW-NA

Creation: when a human/humanoid excessively uses Void Magic their blood quickly gets corrupted to look like the void, in very rare cases the corruption can spread and turn them into Voiaunas, only Atheniyans have turned into Voiaunas due to them being the only city to use Void Magic, but it is theoretically possible for someone else to get corrupted. Voiaunathropy is not genetic.

Appearance:

Type 1:

Coloring: usually stone grey, but can be darker or lighter, some Voiaunas are subtly tinted other colors like purple, green, blue, pink etc.

Tail: long, thin, prehensile, dragon-like, with a tuft of darker grey fur on the end and small spikes down the back

Arms: scaly from the middle of the forearm down, sharp darker claws on the fingers

Legs: scaly from the calf down, more paw-like feet and short, darker claws

Back: large, thin, bat/dragon-like wings, wings are not that strong

Head: small, demon-like horns, very dark grey

Mouth: canines become fangs


Type 2 (post-metamorphosis):

Tail: darker in color, almost black. tuft and spike color is changed to look like Void

Arms: darker in color, almost black. claws and a few scales have changed to look like Void

Legs: darker in color, almost black. claws and a few scales have changed to look like Void

Back: wings are darker in color, almost black, slightly bigger. Bottom of wings looks like it was splatted with Void colored paint, wings are not that strong

Head: horns are slightly longer and curl at the tip (direction varies), black at the base and faded to Void color

Mouth: teeth are slightly more pointy and sharper


Characteristics:

Sleep: prefer to hang upside down by using their tail to hold onto stuff hanging from the ceiling (rafters, beams, chandeliers, stalactites, etc.) but can sleep normally

Flight: very agile fliers, like to push themselves to their limits by attempting tight turns and dangerous dives, often ends in minor injuries, uses their tail to help steer

Magic: when using Void Magic the user's eyes will glow aqua-cyan. Strange, almost runic shapes appear on the underside of the wings, also glow aqua-cyan


Metamorphosis:

After 6-7 months of being a Type 1 the Voiauna in question will start getting more aggressive (after a week they will be full on feral) until it creates it’s cocoon, to create a cocoon it must use it’s magic to corrupt blood, stone, dirt, wood or fabric (basically anything not sentient). When corrupted the objects will be molded into a pill-like shape large enough for the Voiauna to fit with it’s tail curled up against themselves, blood is the easiest to corrupt and mold. Once half of the cocoon is created (creating a boat shape) the Voiauna will make an identical piece, crawl into one half, pull the other half on top, mold the two together from the inside and go into a coma until hatching time.

This cocoon is fragile, if cracked from the outside or exposed to high/very low temperatures it can splinter and hurt the Voiauna inside. Ideal temperature is slightly cooler than room temperature (67°- 64° Fahrenheit).

After about a month of being in the cocoon the Voiauna will awaken and start its attempts on hatching, because it has been still for so long it will be greatly weakened, some Voiaunas don’t survive hatching. Hatching typically takes 3-7 days, during this time they cannot experience high intelligence, only act upon instinct, this includes:
tapping on the cocoon from the inside when someone from the outside taps it (showing that they are alive) and breaking out of the shell and eating the shattered pieces afterwards. They can, however, sense some emotion from others around them (fear, worry, happiness, pride, encouragement, anger and sadness) and this can effect their hatching.

after hatching they will break up the cocoon into small pieces and eat the shards, this helps them regain all their strength quickly and return to them their minds. For a few days after all this happens they will be a little lethargic from their coma, but will soon return to normal.

I really liked creating this creature for the lore of Lumnirora, it was a lot of fun, it even inspired a (very short) paracosm!
