::Prologue::

[just a reminder they are eleven here]

It started out like any other day. Michael and I woke up around the same time, opening our curtains to wave at one another out the window before heading down to eat breakfast with our own families.

I wasted no time shoveling down my oatmeal and fruit my mom placed in front of me, she kissed my forehead and told me to have a good day at school. I have 15 minutes before the bus shows up. It's also the last day before summer break meaning Michael and I have all summer to do all things exciting together. Maybe we can go hiking or learn how to surf.

Finishing my breakfast, I head out the front door after telling my parents goodbye. It has always taken Michael till the last minute to leave before I have to physically drag him out of his house and down the street to the bus stop. Surprisingly he's waiting waiting for me at the end of my driveway. A smile was plastered on his face, making me smile.

"Am I dreaming or is my best friend Mikey actually smiling at 7:30 am?" I giggled, skipping alongside Michael.

"I think you're dreaming." Michael giggled with me, nudging my shoulder.

We continued down the street to wait at the bus stop. No other kids lived our street, we were just surrounded by old people who were constantly angry at us for laughing or making "too much noise" because it's late out, when really it's only 3 o'clock in the afternoon. So we didn't have to share the stop with anyone else, it was peaceful until Michael started yelling and jumping onto my back.

"I'm so happy that today's the last day of school!" He exclaimed. "This Summer is going to be so great, we can do everything together. See movies, eat junk food, play video games all day long. Just you and I."

"We'll make this summer ours."

"What do you mean you're moving, Mikey? Summer break just started last week." My eyes were welling up with tears. This couldn't be happening, my best friend cannot be moving away. I won't let it happen.

"My dad got a promotion, and he has to travel to lots of places for it, and we have to go with him." Michael said sadly. I could see tears forming in his eyes.

I threw my arms around Mikey, pulling him as close as could in hopes that this really is a dream, that I'd wake up in a few hours to my best friend right next to me cuddled up in bed after we fell asleep during a movie, not in a van moving thousands of miles away. "Don't forget about me." I cried into his shoulder.

"I could never do that." He whispered against my head. "I'll be back before you know."

"Promise?" I pulled out of his embrace to look him straight in the eye.

"I, Mikey, Luke's best friend, promise to return one day."

And maybe it was the moment or maybe it was the thought I'd never get to see my best friend again. But I took a chance and kissed him right on the lips and pulled away before he had time to react.

"What was that for?" Michael asked me, chewing on his bottom lip. He wasn't disgusted, he didn't run away screaming from me.

"Oh, just a goodbye kiss?"

"Can we do it again?" Michael blushed, his cheeks were almost the color of his lips.

I nodded quickly.
