Chapter One
Third Person P.O.V.
Marinette had it all.
She had friends that encouraged her, parents that supported her, and an alternate persona that everyone adored. She had everything she could ever want.
Except for Adrien.
For years Adrien has only ever referred to her as a friend. 'Just a friend.' 'A good friend.' 'A really good friend.' Those are the titles that he kept calling her all these years. She loved Adrien, but she wanted more from him. She wanted to mean more to him.
But tomorrow, that's all going to change. Because tomorrow she's going to turn eighteen and the initials of her soulmate, the person she's destined to be with, will appear on her hand, and she's confident that it will be Adrien. Her logic was that Adrien loved her too.
He just... didn't know it yet.
So when Marinette woke up this morning (on behalf of Tikki) a day before her birthday, she was determined to have a good day today.
However, that was going to be a little difficult because today she had school. At 8:10 a.m.
And it was already 8:00.
What the heck was she doing just sitting around and daydreaming? She had to get ready for school! And in ten minutes at that!
After taking a quick shower, slipping on her clothes and hurriedly brushing her hair, she dashed downstairs and out the door, shouting a quick "Bye Mom and Dad, love you!" with a croissant shoved up her mouth.
Bursting into the classroom fifteen minutes late, Ms. Bustier had just finished taking the role, with Adrien not too far behind Marinette.
"Late again Marinette?" Ms. Bustier groaned. "Please try to come to class early. Set your alarm earlier or something but if you're late again, I'm going to call in your parents. That goes for you too Adrien. Understood?"
"Yes, Miss Bustier." Marinette and Adrien said simultaneously.
"Please go your seat."
Adrien went to his seat without difficulty, yet when Marinette tried to go to hers, but tripped and fell. As usual.
Chloe and Sabrina laughed at Marinette, but Sabrina didn't laugh as much.
"How many times are you going to fail standing up school Marinette?" Chloe sneered.
Marinette rolled her eyes and picked herself up, going over to sit in her seat. 'Why am I such a klutz?' she thought to herself.
"Girl, even at seventeen, you're still a clumsy mess around him. Get a grip!" Alya said.
"I'm trying." Marinette told her.
"Alright class, take out your books and turn to page fifty-one."
***After class***
"And don't forget the assignment that's due next week!" Ms. Bustier shouted as everyone rushed out of the classroom for their next period.
Marinette stayed back though, because she noticed something wrong with Ms. Bustier. Her favourite teacher looked stressed and she wanted to see if she was doing alright.
"You coming, Mari?" Alya asked her.
"I'll catch up with you." Marinette responded.
"Okay, I'll wait for you outside." Alya rose up and left.
Marinette, with her bag on her shoulders walked up to Ms. Bustier's desk. "Ms. Bustier?"
She had her head down in her her phone, so at the sound of her name, she jumped slightly. When she realized it was Marinette, she smiled warmly. "Well if it isn't my favourite latecomer. What brings you to the table?"
"You just looked a little stressed, Miss. Is something wrong?" Marinette asked.
Miss Bustier stared at Marinette. She knew she had a reputation for being kind and caring to others, but Marinette takes it to a whole new level. She seemed genuinely concerned for her teacher, so Miss Bustier decided to tell her something that no one else knows yet (because I have a secret... jk I'll stop).
"Well... I'm just a little nervous for... for a date I have tonight."
If Marinette had been sitting in a chair, she would have fallen out of it. Miss Bustier? On a date?
About time.
"Look, you have nothing to worry about Miss. Just be yourself. I'm sure whoever he is will love you just the way you are. You got this."
Miss Bustier smiled. It felt nice to confide to someone about her slight dilemma, even if it was one of her students. Marinette always knew what to say. "Thank you, Marinette. I really appreciate what you've said. You should probably go to your next class, though. You're going to be late. Again."
"Oh, right!" Marinette realized. "Good luck, Miss Bustier!" she shouted as she ran out the door.
"What was that all about?" Alya asked her as they walked to Ms. Mendeleiev's science class.
"Don't tell anyone but..." Marinette paused, looking around as if what she was about to say was top secret. "Miss Bustier's nervous. About a date."
"A date?"Alya gasped. Then she thought about for a while, and said, "About time."
"Right?" Marinette laughed.
***After school***
"I'm going to sleep for like, eighteen hours after the day I've had." Marinette said when class was over.
"Same," Alya replied, yawning. "Hey, I almost forgot to ask you; you wanna hang out with me, Nino and Adrien tomorrow to see Frozen 2? I know you've been dying to see it since the trailer came out. It'll be like a birthday present to you from us."
"Of course. Though I also made plans to help out Luka clean up his boat house. It's too big for only two people to clean so I volunteered to help." Marinette told her.
"But on your birthday?" Alya asked.
Marinette shrugged. "Helping people makes me happy, and that's enough of a birthday present for me."
"Marinette, you have what people call a heart of gold. You know that, right?"
Marinette smiled. "So I've heard."
"So about Luka..." Alya started. "He's really cool..."
"And talented." Marinette pointed out, but she was confused as to where this conversation was going.
"And good-looking..." Alya continued.
"Yeah...?" Marinette finally figured out where this conversation was going and she didn't like it.
"So... you like him then?" Alya smirked.
"What?! No! I-I mean... yeah, I do, but not in that way! He's just a friend, Alya!"
"There it is."
"There is what?"
"There's the friendzone title that you're giving Luka. You're friendzoning him like Adrien friendzones you. You claim Luka's just a friend when he clearly means more to you than you think."
'Way to rub it in my face that I'm just a friend to him, Alya.' Marinette thought. "What are you talking about, Alya? You know that Adrien is the only one for me. You said so yourself. How could you possibly suggest otherwise?" she argued. When she felt her face heat up, she knew that her argument was pointless.
"The fact that you're blushing means that I'm right."
Marinette shut up at that.
"Look, Mari, Adrien's great, but you deserve someone who actually notices you, like Luka. If you keep chasing after someone you can't have for the rest of life, you're going to eventually regret it. Maybe... maybe Adrien isn't the one for you."
Marinette gasped. Never in all life would she have thought those words would escape Alya's lips. What happened to the girl who always secretly set up plans so that she and Adrien would end up alone together?
"You're wrong!" Marinette insisted. "I love Adrien Agreste. I've been in love with him for years! He's the only one for me. I could never fall for someone else. Never!" With tears streaming down her face, she shoved the rest of the books in her bag and ran out of the classroom.
Alya tried to call out to her, shouting for her to come back, to reason with her.
But she was already gone.
