Mama's boy
A/n: I'm feeling particularly queer for Nathalie right now. And I'm non binary so it's gay if I like guys AND girls.
Ever since the tragic loss of his mother, Adrien had surprisingly, kept a mother figure in his life. Because to his luck, Nathalie had been there even before he was born. She'd always been there, babysitting when his parents were busy, coming on work trips with them, teaching him when he was still homeschooled. She'd been there from day one. So when Emilie died, Adrien didn't loose a mother altogether, he lost ONE of his mothers. Which was still horrible and tragic to go through of course, but Nathalie had been the one to help him through it all. His father was no help, the man just cut the whole world off.
Grief was a beast to tackle, but it was something you could deal with. Unfortunately it tends to make already bad people worse, hence why Adrien came out the other side healed and Gabriel didn't.
The first Mother's Day after Emile's death, he'd spent most of it moping. Understandably so, it was the first time he'd be giving Mother's Day flowers to her grave and not to her smiling face. But who was there for him? Nathalie.
The second Mother's Day without Emilie was easier, as time had helped heal and in general, Adrien was doing much better. It was still a bit gloomy, but he wasn't as much of a wreck as he was the year before.
And now it was the third Mother's Day post Emilie. And he intended on not just leaving the annual Mother's Day flowers on his mothers grave, but giving something to Nathalie too. Because she was his mother, even if not by blood. She stepped up when no one else did, she'd been there as a kid and she was still here today.
Although he found himself unsure what to get her, or make her. This would be the first time he'd celebrate her as a mother officially, openly acknowledging she was his mother. Even if they both knew it, they'd not really said it out loud. So he asked the most sentimental person he knew for help, Luka of course.
"I dunno I feel like it needs to be something that acknowledges she's my mum but not something that makes her feel like I'm... replacing? Overlooking? My biological mum" Adrien rambled.
"What did you usually get your mum before she died? Still flowers?" Luka asked.
"Flowers are definitely a her thing. I got them every year, along with a card and something else. Sometimes it was jewellery, sometimes it was the fancy chocolates she liked... I got her a perfume once, she wore it every day until the bottle ran out"
Luka had always been a good gift giver. He was the kind of person that gifted with meaning. He'd make something personal, or save up to get the recipient something they'd been really wanting. Adrien's favourite birthday and Christmas presents were always from Luka, he always knew exactly what to get. A CD with all their favourite songs burnt onto it, handmade bracelets with his birthstones, hand bound journal in his favourite colours, the exact vintage record player Adrien had been trying to find for years. He always knew exactly what would bring others to tears with how grateful he could make you feel.
"Hmm... something she'd get use out of. Fancy stuff is all well and good but there's no point if it's not going to be used. It'll just sit on a shelf and collect dust... unless it's like art or something that's meant to be a decoration" Luka suggested.
"Something she'd use... I mean, she writes a lot but she uses her tablet for that. Uh... she wears glasses? That's something she uses a lot. Although I'd need her prescription if I got her custom frames..." Adrien pondered, pacing around Lukas room trying to come up with something.
Luka watched him pace, he couldn't help but smile seeing just how dedicated Adrien was to this. It was sweet, knowing and seeing just how much he viewed Nathalie as a mother. In truth, Luka liked Nathalie too. She was the cool parent of Adrien's legal guardians. Unlike his shitty dad, Nathalie was a real one. She'd always pull strings to let Adrien go out with his friends, she'd pick him up late into the night from long hangouts without any complaint, she was always quick to offer Luka and his sister a ride home from school when the weather was bad and she came to pick up Adrien. Overall, just a good person who wanted her son to have his own fun, safely of course. And wanted to be involved in his life by meeting his friends.
So when Adrien inevitably started having the 'oh my god I like men and if I date my bestie Luka here my dad will kill me' panic, his first thought was 'Nathalie will understand'. And she did. It was because of her keeping the secret from the public Adrien was allowed to date Luka at all, she'd make excuses for him and drop him off on dates.
"She studied history right? Or was it archeology?" Luka spoke up.
"Both. Man I can't believe she picked working for my dad over a cool job like an archeologist..." Adrien replied.
"She was loyal to your family I'll give her that"
"In all honesty I think she was in love with my mum, but wanted her to be happy and just let her go when she fell for my dad. And when things got bad she stuck around because she wanted to be there for her and me"
Luka was silent a moment, THAT was some tea he'd not heard yet. He wanted all those details later.
"Ok, you're absolutely telling me that scalding hot tea once we've sorted this present thing" Luka said.
"It's a long story but I like to yap, so you're in luck. But first, gifts... what about... something to do with history, something she'd get really exited over" Adrien muttered.
An idea came to Luka, and for a moment he thought 'no way that's too expensive' but then he remembered this was Adrien he was talking to. That boy had money to literally burn.
"How about an artefact?" He suggested.
Adrian stopped pacing, giving in a confused look.
"What I just... rob a museum?" He asked.
"No, you can actually buy small artefacts legally. Like coins, pots and stuff. There's genuine legal dealers who sell them to museums and private collectors" Luka replied.
Now THAT, that was an idea. Nathalie did have a collection of recreations of artefacts in her room. Some ancient Egyptian style cats, a few mini statuettes of Greek gods, some painted decorate plates and pots recreating ones found in historical sites. But a genuine ancient artefact? That would be a great gift.
Now obviously even Adrien couldn't afford something like a massive marble statue from Rome, that's the kind of thing only a museum curator could afford to get legally. But something smaller, little figures, vases, some coins or jewellery? That was doable.
"Dude give me your laptop I have to GOOGLE some stuff" Adrien said, immediately locked in.
Luka snickered, shifting back in his desk chair to make room for Adrien to come sit in his lap. The blonde was quick to work, looking for legal dealers and trying to remember what ancient civilisations Nathalie had books on so he could get her something from one she liked. Luka wrapped his arms around him, resting his chin on Adrien's shoulder.
"I love you, you know that?" He said.
"I love you too, why the sudden sentiment though?" Adrien replied.
"Because you're such a mamas boy that even when you're not biologically her child you still go all out for Mother's Day, that just shows how big of a heart you have"
Adrien cracked a smile, glad to know his boyfriend saw just how much love he had to give. He didn't get to show that often, he couldn't often trust people around him...
"Good to know you can tell difference between being a mamas boy and having a 'boy mum' as they call it" Adrien snickered.
"Oh gods thank fuck neither of your mums were 'boy mums" Luka replied.
"You can love your son into being a mamas big without internalised misogyny, my mums are proof of it"
It was no secret Adrien was a real clinger with both his mother figures, perhaps his dads absent parenting had something to do with it. But it made him a very compassionate person who understood it was ok for boys to cry and taught him to respect feminine aligned people. And maybe it was because Luka grew up with only girls around him, a mother and sister, but he very much loved the fact Adrien knew how to respect his all girl family whenever he was staying over. Emilie and Nathalie raised him well.
"Oh my gods look at these little dudes" Adrien snickered, coming across a listing for some rather funny looking little clay figures from ancient Japan.
"They look like the little singing guys from animal crossing, the gyroid things" Luka chuckled.
"They do! Oh my gods she'd love these. She has so many recreations of these types of little creatures from around the world"
That was it, he'd decided. He'd have to order them at home when he had his card with him, but he knew exactly what he'd be getting now.
"That's for the help, you're a legend" Adrien smiled, turning to face Luka and placing a kiss on his cheek.
Luka smiled, returning the kiss with one on his lips. Gift ideas were his specialty, Adrien was right to come to him.
"And don't you forget it. Now tell me about this whole crush thing-"
