Incarnations (PT1)

A/n: could it be,,, a past life AU?? More likely than you think. Also using the Adrien was originally going to use crutches and have leg pains thing again.

Typically school excursions were somewhat boring, since they'd drill the educational aspect of the trip to the aquarium or art gallery into your head. You had to stay with the group, fill out a work sheet, listen to the history of a particular type of tree in the National park etc. but there was something about a museum trip that was always fun, even if you had to listen to a few boring tour guide talks about world war 1. It was even more fun when you were actually allowed to roam around the museum yourself. Now all the students were over 16, the school could trust them to walk museums, art galleries and zoos on their own time as long as they made it back to the meeting point at the right time.

It was probably midday by now, but Adrien was still lingering in the ancient world section. Ancient history was way more cool than modern history. He didn't care about the civil war he cared about how the Egyptians built such intricate structures with so limited tools. And like every person born male on the planet he cared about the Roman Empire. For some reason they all had a Roman Empire phase...

There was something about seeing a pot once used daily to store water or olive oil 1000s of years ago, with your own two eyes in the modern day that was almost like seeing a mythical creature. It put into perspective how much time had passed, how these once common objects were now rare and held to a high enough standard they were in museums behind glass.

Some Greek woman properly picked up this pot, scooped up some water and carried it back home to wash her kids chitons 3000 years ago. And now it was sitting in a display case, the only evidence of that woman ever existing.

"Adrien-"

Jumping for a moment from the sudden presence behind him, Adrien snapped out of his daze staring at the pot and turned around to find-

"Luka, what the hell are you doing here?" He asked.

"Pupil free day at my school, wanted to crash your excursion to be a classic brother and embarrass my sister with my presence" Luka replied.

Adrien snickered, classic brother behaviour. Juleka was probably rolling her eyes and telling him 'ugh, get out of here' when she saw him. Lovingly of course, the twins loved each other. It was just sibling law to annoy each other.

"Everyone else is wondering what the hell is taking you so long, they're in the fossil secretion" Luka added.

"They can keep wondering, I'm not leaving until I've seen every ancient cup here" Adrien replied, turning back to the case full of pottery.

"Mood, this stuff is more interesting"

Dinosaurs were cool and all, but the funny poses the people on pots were doing was cooler. So was trying to guess which god was being depicted based on their appearance alone. Luka moved closer to Adrien, to take a better look at the pottery too. They stood side by side, scanning over the shards of broken plates with patterns still on them and impressively in tact cups under the little display lights.

A lot of the time, ancient artefacts were kept under those dull, warm display lights to prevent them from fading in colour from the sun or bright light exposure. The moody effect of a dim, quiet room while you pondered on life 3000 years ago was just a bonus.

"Hey I've seen pictures of this plate before" Luka pointed out, gesturing to a plate on its display stand.

In impressively good condition, the plate showed two warriors. One bandaging the wound of the other, an arrow stuck into the ground beside them implying the warrior had been struck with said arrow. The other pulling it out, wrapping it up, and undoubtedly telling his fellow solider to be more careful next time.

The plaque underneath it read:
Achilles tending to the wounds of Patroclus
500BCE, Greece (Unknown artist)
Kyxil Vase
Greatest of the Greek warriors Achilles pictures wrapping the arrow wound on the arm of fellow warrior and lover Patroclus during the Trojan war.

"Figures it's them, who else from Ancient Greece would have homoerotic tension in their art? Actually most of the gods would..." Luka chuckled.

"Huh... I feel like I've seen this before..." Adrien muttered.

"You probably have in a history book or something, it's pretty famous"

"No as in like... deja vu"

Luka looked back at the plate, now that Adrien mentioned it... yeah there was a weird sense of deja vu... like he'd had his wounds wrapped like that before. That was stupid though, Luka had never been shot in the arm with an arrow. And as far as Adrien knew he'd never wrapped up someone's arm like that. Nether of them had even held a bow and arrow before, let alone had to pull an arrow from and arm and wrap it.

Shaking the feeling aside, chalking it up to just having seen the plate in a picture before or something, they moved on. To the rusted old weapons, the figures and statues, the fragments of parchment and what was left of sandals and helmets. The rest of the trip went as normal, although that nagging feeling of deja vu was still lingering in the back of the boys minds. By the time Adrien got home and had wrapped up his piano session and had dinner, gotten ready for bed, that nagging feeling was annoying him to the point he'd gotten out of bed and started looking through his bookshelf for any history or mythology book he may have seen that picture in.

"Kid go to bed, it's like midnight" Plagg complained, wanting to sleep but unable to with Adrien making noise.

"This is bugging the hell out of me Plagg, I need to know where I've seen that plate before" he replied.

"Why is it so important? You probably just saw it in a textbook or something"

"Because- just because! It won't leave my head. It's like... like I've seen that exact scene before. Like I've... wrapped up an arm like that? I don't know, it feels familiar"

Plagg was quiet a moment, pondering on what Adrien said. The tiny cat had been around a... very long time. He'd seen many civilisations rise and fall, and being a kwami he was literal proof magic and the spiritual did exist to a point.

"What do you mean familiar? Like you've seen the picture before or done the action before?" He asked.

"Both? I don't know. But I can see this vivid memory of holding someone's arm and wrapping it up. They're more tanned than me, they're sitting in front of me, looking away in pain... the same position as in the picture" Adrien explained.

Again, Plagg fell silent. This time the dots were connecting in his head. Past lives were a thing, he'd seen miraculous holders go on to hold the same miraculous in another body, another time, another country altogether. Although he'd never had a Greek warrior as a holder... it was possible a Greek warrior was now a French super hero.

"What? What's with that look, do I sound insane?" Adrien asked.

"No it's just... maybe seeing that plate triggered a memory" Plagg explained.

"What memory? I've never even touched a bow and arrow let alone pulled one out of my friends arm"

"Not an Adrien memory, a... past memory. From before you were Adrien"

Now it was Adrien's turn to fall silent. Was this kwami really suggesting what he thought he was?

"Wait are you saying-" he began.

"That you were Achilles in a past life? Maybe. You and I both know miraculous holders have been reincarnated into the same miraculous holder years apart. I definitely didn't have a Greek warrior as a holder, but I have seen reincarnations happen..." Plagg explained.

"That's... no I can't be a warrior, I'm nothing like-"

"Adrien, think about it..."

Plagg had connected the dots by now, but Adrien was still processing. There were... a lot of similarities.

Blonde, likes boys, a superhero is like a modern day warrior, strategic, fencing is like modern day sword fighting, stubborn, heroic, loving toward those he cared for... and he'd always had those leg pains, the ones that began in the heel and travelled up the leg as if he'd torn his tendon...

"Oh my gods Plagg..." Adrien muttered.

"Yeah... it's possible. Fuck even both names start with A, although that could just be coincidence" Plagg replied.

It was starting to sink in, but it still felt unreal to Adrien. He needed proof, some kind of confirmation. He needed to trigger another memory.

There was no way he was sleeping tonight, he needed to get a copy of the Iliad ASAP.
