Cat and the DILF (part 4)
A/n: tbh,,, I really like this concept. Then again, I think I just like dilfs in general.
Things had been going well, being a step parent wasn't that bad. Adrien was fully prepared for the 'you're not my real dad' a lot of kids do when they get a step parent, it can be difficult for a kid to understand when their mum or dad suddenly brings in another adult that acts like your parent, but you've only known a few months. But Rhythm was all for having another dad. She was just a loving kid as it was, and seemed to view Adrien as another parent to add to her collection. She had a mum, a dad now another dad and if her mum ever dated again, she may even have another mum. Collecting parents like Pokémon cards this kid was.
Of course, Luka did talk to his ex about the situation. Their child was autistic after all, and big changes can be really hard fir autistic kids. Luckily thanks to the ex's being on good terms and working well with co parenting, she was prepared to handle any outbursts that may result from the stress of a big change. But she was relived to find her daughter was actually quite happy and exited about having another dad. Whenever it was a mums house week for her, she'd talk about how cool 'dad Adrien' is and how he was fun to play with.
And luckily, thanks to a very careful and serious talk with her in terms she could understand, she kept the little detail Adrien was Cat Noir a secret.
'That's only for me, you and Adrien' is what Luka told her, in his serious dad voice. So she knew it was a big secret she needed to keep or she might accidentally hurt dad Adrien. As long as she kept it a secret, she could have two dads.
After several months of sleeping over at Adrien's house sometimes, and Adrien sleeping at Lukas others, the two decided it was time to move in together. And because Adrien had a house and Luka just had an apartment, the decision for him and Rhythm to move in with Adrien was made. They did it slowly, as to not stress out Rhythm. Slowly taking things over to the house over the course of a month or so, spending more and more time there and getting Rhythm exited about it by letting her pick her own room decorations. Finally that spare room in the house had a purpose, turned from a place Adrien just kept things he didn't have a spot for into a child's bedroom.
And finally, after around 6 months of dating and a slow process of moving and easing Rhythm into things, they were officially a little family in their own house all together. Luka had quickly gotten used to being with Adrien almost 24/7, it felt so good to be in love again. Especially when it was with someone who was accepting of his child and didn't turn him away because they didn't want the burden of step-parenthood that came with dating a father. Luka had been so used to being called dad by his little girl, it was a welcome adjustment to hear her call Adrien dad too. But the excitement didn't end there because it was finally time for Rhythm to start school.
Luka had been tirelessly working to get her into a school that would accommodate her needs, that was close enough he and his ex could drive her to and from each day. It took a while, but today was the day. In truth, he was actually very scared for her. She'd been through so many changes this year, and she'd taken it like a champ. But Luka was worried the stress of starting school would tip her over the edge into a meltdown.
Her little feet sat on his knee as he did up her shoes, velcro straps so she could take them off if she needed to. He'd made her favourite breakfast, Adrien did her hair nice and gently the way she liked it, and Luka made sure to cut the tags off her school uniform so they didn't irritate her.
"You'll be alright sweetheart, but if anything happens you tell the teacher to call me ok?" Luka said.
"Mmkay" she replied, more interested in the ribbons Adrien put in her hair.
"It won't be scary, you'll make friends that are like you. And you'll get to play a lot of games that teach you cool things"
"Talking?"
She wasn't always great with her verbal skills, she'd shut down sometimes and go non verbal. On a good day she could speak full sentences, on an average day it was more a few word requests and responses.
"You will have to a little bit. But the teachers know how to use flash cards and some of the other kids talk with tablet. You'll be ok if you stop talking" Luka assured.
Shoes on, hair done, uniform neat and tag free, it was time to go. Luka picked her up off the couch and put her sturdy on her feet on the ground.
"Ready to go?" He asked.
She nodded, she seemed exited although Luka was still worried that when she actually got there, she'd freak out.
"Let's get Adrien then"
In the kitchen, Adrien had packed her a yummy first day of school lunch of her favourite treats, and made sure everything she'd need was in her backpack. Her Cat Noir backpack, that she insisted on getting even though she had the real Cat Noir sleeping next to her dad every night.
"Lunch, water bottle, pencil case, books... uh... hat... I think that's all" Adrien muttered, double checking everything was there.
He was a little nervous for her too, although he'd seen this school before a few times as Cat Noir, having to keep akumas away from it. He knew there was a very well done system in place in the event of an akuma attack, so he wasn't worried about his now step daughter completely melting down like she did the day he scooped her up to safety. He knew she was safe at this school, but the parental nerves still buzzed in him.
"Packed?" Luka asked, walking in with child in tow.
"Ready to go, PLAGG WE'RE LEAVING!" Adrien replied, the calling out for the still in bed kwami.
Plagg groaned in annoyance floating down the stairs, having wanted to sleep in.
"It's to easrrrlyyy..." he complained.
"It's a school day, you'll have to get used to this"
Rhythm found Plagg quite funny, and he had a surprising amount of patience with her. Even he understood she didn't exactly have the same awareness and restraint as a regular kid did, and would play along with her unless it got too much for the both of them. So he let her pick up out of the air and hold him in her hands to talk to him.
"Good morning!" She smiled.
"Yeah, good morning kiddo. You're lucky you're cute" he replied.
Adrien just shook his head and snickered, typical Plagg. The family headed out to the car, strapped Rhythm into the child safe seat and got on the road. While she was occupied playing 'spot the animal as we dive past' with Plagg, the dads got a chance to chat.
"Hun I'm dying of nerves here. I really don't want this to be any harder than it has to be for her" Luka sighed.
"She'll be alright, even if she has a bit of a hard time at first she'll ease into it" Adrien assured.
"I know it's just... it's not the school, I know the school is a good one. It's more the fact she's already had so many changes his year I'm worried this will make her pop"
It was a valid concern, sometimes autistic kids will build up stress and explode later rather than react in the moment. And just because she's seemed to be coping well with moving house and getting a step dad, doesn't mean that stress hasn't been bubbling.
"I get it, but she's got you and her mum, you're both doing everything to make things easier for her. Even if she doesn't have the best time today you'll make her feel better just by being there for her. You always do" Adrien explained.
"You've helped a lot too you know? You may not be at the same level she is, but you have the same diagnosis so you connect with her better than anyone else I'd say" Luka replied.
"You're her dad, you've been there from the moment she was born. I'm just a step parent"
"One she loves. Don't sell yourself short, you're part of this family too. She loves you, you're 'dad Adrien' to her"
That was true, even if they weren't related by blood, they certainly had a family connection. Which is why when they arrived at school and walked her in, stayed from the first hour or so with all the other parents to get the kids used to a new place, and eventually finally said 'see you this afternoon' and left, Adrien felt the adrenaline and pride of a proud parent.
She did well, she was definitely a bit shy and clingy. But once the teachers had all the kids playing some games and making friends, she eased up. Her nerves starting to turn to excitement when she was given a colouring booklet teaching her how to read basic words. She got very into tracing the word, then colouring the picture next to it.
Luka was a little more at ease seeing her adjusting well, although in the back of his mind he was still worried about getting that 'come pick her up' call later in the day.
But it was done. The first day of school drop off was done. And the house felt a bit empty without her in it when it wasn't a mums house week, he was used to her being home with him all day.
"Calm down darling, she'll be ok. She's doing well for someone in her situation" Adrien assured, sitting beside him on the couch once they got back home.
"She did do well, I'm proud of her. Just... dad nerves I guess" Luka replied.
"I'm proud of her too, she did better than I'd have done at her age"
Luka smiled, pulling Adrien into his arms and kissing his forehead.
"Thank you for treating her like your own" he said.
"As far as I'm concerned she is my own. If she's calling me dad, then I'm her dad" Adrien replied.
"You're already a million times better than your dad ever was, and you've only been doing this full time dad thing a few months"
"I refuse to ever sink to his level. She won't have ANY daddy issues on my watch"
Adrien had admittedly been a bit nervous about the idea of being a parent all his life, because he'd always worried he'd end up like his own father. But meeting Luka and Rhythm only proved once and for all that he'd NEVER repeat that cycle.
"I love you Adrien" Luka smiled.
"I love you too Luka... you and Rhythm. Our little girl"
