Aware
He wasn't exactly sure when he became aware, but ever since he had, Adrien had a love hate relationship with it.
Adrien Agreste aka Cat Noir, was the protagonist of a children's animated TV series known as 'Miraculous tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir'. And unfortunately for him, he was doomed by the narrative. His authors weren't exactly the best writers in the world you see, and it lead to his life becoming an absolute mess. He couldn't even take comfort in knowing that his mess was intentional and that as the story progressed, things would get better. Because they wouldn't, the mess wasn't intentional. It was unintentional.
He couldn't remember when he became aware that he was a fictional character being puppeted around by some lack lustre writers, but he first started to think something was off when he'd come to figure out that he was indeed, bisexual. He wished to be with a boy, he liked them a bit better than girls actually. But for some reason, he kept being shoved into a loveless will-they-won't-they with Ladybug. She clearly didn't like him, and once he'd come to his own understandings, he lost feelings too. So why did he keep getting tossed at her?
Could it be that his bisexuality was... accidental? That the writers didn't intend for him to be bi, but he accidentally came off as bisexual coded?
Well that was frustrating wasn't it? Knowing you'd rather be kissing boys but having your writers try to shove you into the arms of a girl you no longer liked.
The next thing that started to fall into place for him, was how no one else around him seemed to notice the many inconsistencies in their lives. They claimed to be on his side, but continued to traumatise him. They'd mentioned seemingly important things once, then never again like it never happened. People around him would show up once then disappear like they never existed but were apparently important to the friend group. Almost like... plot holes.
And it became abundantly clear to him that he was a character being written when he suddenly became aware of the running narration that had been there the whole time, he just for some reason didn't acknowledge it.
"Can you not?" Adrien spoke up.
Sorry Adrien, the story needs to be told.
Adrien sighed and rolled his eyes, typical attitude for a teenager who'd just become aware he was a fictional character.
"You'd have attitude to if you were in my position" He added.
I suppose I would. Having little to no control over my own life would be very frustrating.
"Gee, thanks for reminding me..."
But what Adrien was yet to realise was the fact something had changed within the last few minutes. He was a kids show character, so why the hell is the narrator saying FUCK and and it's not been censored?
Adrien sat up, suddenly connecting those dots.
"I can swear now?" He asked.
Try it and find out.
"Fuck? FUCK! BITCH! Uh... CU-"
Ok maybe not that one, the Americans in the audience will probably get offended.
"What? Why?" He questioned.
Fuck if I know, it's normal where I'm from. But that's beside the point. The newfound ability to swear without any censorship meant something had changed quite recently. At first he thought, perhaps it's because the audience has grown into teenagers and adults, and thus the fan base is no longer children. But then he realised, that couldn't be it. The fact this is marketed as a children show is part of why the franchise is so successful, toy sales. As if the show runners would give up their precious merchandise revenue.
"True... they're probably making bank off kids toys... never mind the show would make so much more sense as a teen to adult show..." Adrien said.
He was correct there, with the way the writers wanted to try and add much deeper and darker elements, it'd work better without having to abide by a PG rating.
See the fact he was now able to swear meant censorship had been taken away, that kids were no longer the target audience. At least, in this current moment. Almost like he'd been taken from his canon and placed into another. Almost like-
"Is this a fucking fan fiction?" Adrien said.
...
"Don't dot dot dot me, this is a fan fiction isn't it?"
Maybe it is. But don't fret, I'm not going to force you into a love square, make you go through some tragic event or anything... at least not this time.
"Wha-"
I'm letting you do what you want. You're a doomed by the narrative, bursting with potential if not for you bad writers, accidentally bisexual (and probably autistic) coded teenager. You deserve some freedom, some rebellion.
"Hold up- what's in the brackets? I'm autistic?" He questioned.
Coded. Also likely an accident from the writers.
"... great. More wasted characterisation potential"
I know right? But the point is, I'm letting you do what you want Adrien. Just say it, and I'll make it happen. You can already swear, what else do you want to do?
"Kiss boys" he said, without skipping a beat.
Done.
His phone began to ring in his pocket, and when he pulled it out he was met with the contact for one of his closest friends. One he happened to find rather attractive.
"Wh- how did you know I liked Luka?" He asked.
The locker scene, the times you've thrown yourself at him to save him, the hugs, the longing gazes, the fact you both know each other's identities, the-
"Ok- I get it"
He answered the phone, heart racing in his chest. He'd just been asked if he could leave a window open so his beloved snake hero could sneak in. He certainly didn't have to be asked twice, and he quickly went to slide open one of his windows and waited impatiently for his visitor. Said visitor was there in record time, jumping through the window and landing with a superhero's elegance.
"Luka!" Adrien smiled.
Detransforming, Luka took Adrien by the shoulders and gave him a serious look.
"Adrien how long have you had a crush on me?" He asked.
"Wh- How did you-"
What? Don't look at me. You want to kiss him don't you?
"You can hear the narrator too can't you?" Adrien asked.
"For months now. We're both self aware we're characters in a dumper fire of a show aren't we?" Luka asked.
"Yeah, you too? Damn. Rip us I guess, meant to be together but doomed to be apart by bad writing"
"Well... if we're in a fanfic now..."
Exactly Adrien, don't let me stop you. In fact I encourage you... as long as you're being safe.
"What do you mean by that?" Adrien blushed.
"Smut Adrien, they mean smut" Luka replied.
Look I'm not going to write you guys doing that NOW. You're still teenagers in this canon. When you're adults? Then we can talk. There's some other timeline out there in the fanfic world where you're married and happy and fucking every day. But this one? Don't let me stop you from being hormonal teenagers off screen, but as long as I'm narrating you, we need to keep things at the very least rated M ok?
The shrugged, good enough for them at the moment. They were just glad to finally be free from their doomed narrative, even if it was just for a moment.
Is there something you two need to admit to each other boys?
They looked at each other, excitement brewing. This was it! No censorship, no plot holes, no shitty writers who made them heteronormative!
"I'm bisexual and I love you" Adrien said.
"Me too, I'm bisexual and I love you" Luka replied.
"Can we make out? Please?"
"I'm not letting you go until we're forcibly ripped out of this fanfic"
And with that, the two could finally be gay and make out as much as they liked. No kids show censorship or shitty show runners to stop them.
