Chapter 6 Doing What is Right, Isn't Easy
Marinette agrees to take Luka back because she misses him. Besides, she is sure he did not murder his boss. There is no way he would ever kill anyone. That is not Luka's personality at all.
Chelsea feels bad about Luka taking the blame. She can't let him be on trial for something that she did. It may have been an accident, but she knows now she must tell the truth.
Chelsea takes a taxi to the courthouse. She feels awkward about the entire thing, but what other choice does she have? She enters the courtroom. "I must speak to you at once, your honor," She says.
The others gasp when they hear her voice. The defendant looks at her surprised. What could she say that has any bearing on the court trial?
"What is this outburst about Miss Chelsea?" The judge asks.
"Your honor, I know that the defendant Luka is on trial here, but I must object." She says.
"Any reason why?" The judge wants to know.
"Yes, he is innocent, I can swear to it. I know he did not kill his boss," She says.
"How can you possibly know such a thing?" The judge questions her.
"I know because well, his boss was also my father, and I killed him!" Chelsea blurted out. It was quite how she expected the confession to go.
Luka gasped. Marinette did the same. Neither of them could believe that Chelsea had a thing to do with the crime.
"You killed him?" The judge responded. "Yes, your honor, it was me." Chelsea insisted.
The judge dropped all charges against Luka Cuffaine since Chelsea Winters confessed to the death of her father, Mr. Winters, the boss of the business. He was surprised, but he had no choice, he could not hold Luka for something that someone else confessed to.
A new trial was scheduled with Chelsea as the defendant in a few weeks. Luka and Marinette agreed to help her by hiring a lawyer to defend her. Sure she confessed, but she still deserved a lawyer.
Luka took Marinette out to celebrate his being set free. They both felt sorry for Chelsea. Luka looked at his fiance who had taken him and the ring back. He was happy again at last.
"What will you do for a job?" Marinette asked.
"I will take over the business, but I believe I will rename it and make it into a more honest workplace," Luka said with a smile.
Marinette was relieved. Luka was too. For once, he did not have to worry about watching his back so much or losing Marinette. Yes, his life was back on track for a change.
Luka and Marinette were married four months after they got back together. Chelsea was given a fair trial and the lawyer who represented her did his best.
Chelsea admitted to what happened the day her father died. She confessed she tried to quit working for him that her father had been overbearing and refused to release her arm. She had been angry and grabbed something. She hit him to defend herself and he fell to the ground his face covered in blood.
"So, you see I killed him," She said with tears in her eyes.
The jury all took pity on her. At the end of the trial, they sound they found the defendant Chelsea Winters not guilty on the charge of first-degree murder. They all agreed the defendant's arguments and evidence pointed to self-defense. Chelsea was set free. She did not have to serve any more charges in the death of her father.
Jason begged Chelsea to take him back, but she refused since he cheated on her with another girl. She knew he never loved her. She sighed. She also knew by now that Luka never loved her either. She was alone. Alone once more.
She continued to work for the company under Luka. Marinette worked there as an accountant and the designer for some of the new software and clothes for the workers. She was a part-time secretary to Luka as well.
A few others were hired to work there too under the new management. An Adrien Agreste, and his fiance Kagami Tsurugi, a Felix Graham De Vanily, and his fiance Bridgrette, and last there was Max Kante and his wife Alix Kubel Kante.
One day after work, Marinette smiled at her husband, Luka. She was glad that he had given Chelsea another chance. The girl was a great asset to the company and his spy days were all behind him.
Marinette could not be happier.
The new employees, those in charge of maintenance, etc. were good at their jobs. Soon, the place prospered more under its new manager doing an honest day's work.
The end...
