Prologue
It was a hot, sunny morning in a small peaceful town called Toad Town in the wide land of the Mushroom Kingdom. A short, elderly man with a tuft of tall but thin white hair on his head was carrying a big cardboard box full of old paintings out from his red car's trunk and set it down on a table. He was wearing brown shoes and a white lab coat with a red shirt underneath that would resemble him as a scientist. He was in fact a scientist and inventor. He sighed in exhaustion from carrying the heavy load and adjusted his large circle frame glasses on his pink nose. He smiled and waved at a yellow Toad that was watching him nearby, exposing only a single tooth from his mouth.
The small Toadstool gave him a small smile in return before looking through the box of paintings. They included a tall man with orange hair and orange mustache wearing a purple robe sitting on a rocking chair reading a book known as Neville, the bookish father. A woman with blue skin and bright yellow eyes, an oval-shaped face and short blond hair that frills up at the ends, wearing a pink bathrobe with a white lining at the sleeves and the bottom, sitting in front of a mirror brushing her hair, labeled as Lydia the mirror gazing mother. And an infant wearing a yellow baby gown with a white bib. He was also seen sucking on a yellow pacifier. He was also carrying a pink rattle as well. He was labeled Chauncey, the spoiled baby respectfully.
"Excuse me, sir, but what exactly are these?! They look rather strange!" The Toad asked, as he was looking at the painting of Chauncey nervously.
"Ah... I see you're curious about my portraits, youngster. These are old paintings I had lying around for years. I figured it wouldn't hurt to sell them for money towards moving now. I thought they would fetch a pretty penny if you know how much value they are worth. I've been living in the same area for decades since I was around 20 or so. I would think a nice change of scenery would do nicely so I feel it is time to move on to a different place that's more peaceful for my research. In fact, I laid my eyes on one area in particular that I plan on moving into soon that would be perfect for what I'm researching in a safer environment." The old man explained.
"Hmm... I don't know! They look kinda creepy to me!" The yellow Toad replied as he was gazing at a portrait of a boo with yellow eyes, numbered 22.
The Professor looked at the painting from behind the Toad's shoulder. He knew exactly what the little Toad was looking at. Its name was Boolossus.
"Well I suppose only through the eyes of the beholder, you can see the true beauty of the art within. Believe me, someone will come through here and have a liking to these. Everyone has their own opinions after all."
"If you say so...!" the Toad said, giving him a strange look. "Where did you get this one from?!"
The old man adjusted his glasses again to see a painting of a Boo with a crown with the King of the Koopas, Bowser.
The strange old man laughed in amusement. "Hehehe... I got that one with help from a friend years ago. It was actually one of my favorites."
"Then if it's one of your favorites, why would you be selling it at a garage sale?" The Toad asked, curiously.
"That's because I need the money." The man answered again.
"If you say so... But I don't think anyone would really buy this one if it has the terrible monster, Bowser on it." The Toad wasn't wrong though. Everyone would recognize exactly who Bowser was so who would want something that involved him in their household?
The Toad then turned his gaze to the boo also on the portrait. He was a rather large boo with glowing purple eyes. His mouth stretched into a creepy mischievous smile that only boos could achieve staring at the Koopa king with pleasure in his gaze. "Who is the peculiar looking boo?! Why is he wearing a crown?!"
"Ah... That's the ruler of the boos, King Boo. He may not look like much but he has mysterious but also very dangerous powers."
The Toad didn't respond at first and instead he was too fixated on the boo instead of Bowser. As the toad stared at it he could not help but feel the eyes pierce into him, as if the boo in the portrait were watching him with his own eyes. He suddenly had chills down his spine and shuddered. He was still too transfixed on the portrait as he continued to stare at it in utter horror. Time seemed to stand still until a murmur interrupted his trance.
"Hey, you alright there, young feller?" The old man sounded concerned.
Jerking his head up at the old man in front of him, he then seemed to come back into reality. "Er...Um... Yes! I'm good..." the Toad squeaked in response. "But my point still stands, I don't think this one or any of your items are really going to sell. It all seems like a bunch of junk."
"It's just some knickknacks I had lying around collecting dust and old inventions of mine that I don't use anymore. Don't fret, my boy, someone is bound to find something they like. Everything sells eventually. I'd like these items to get a new chance at life. Even if I stopped using them, someone else would make some use out of them."
As if to contradict the Toad's response, a tall figure in a mysterious black cloak walked over to them. "Are you selling these paintings?" A feminine voice asked. The Toad, slightly startled at first, looked at her with a strange look. He quickly noticed that she was wearing sunglasses to cover her eyes.
"Yes, in fact, I am selling all of them. Why? Do you like any of the ones you see?" The human asked.
"Yes. As a matter of fact, I like that one right there. How much you're willing to sell it for?" The anonymous woman spoke up, pointing at the painting that the Toad was holding.
"I would sell it for a few thousand. About 10,000 perhaps, considering how much of a prized possession it was."
"You got a deal!" The woman replied, joyfully rubbing her transparent purplish hands together. She quickly put her hands down into her cloak sleeves to avoid showing her true appearance but the Toad wasn't really convinced with the woman. He figured the man in the white lab coat would see through her disguise but he seemed to be more interested in the money as he took the painting from the Toad's hands.
"Great! I'll package this one up for you. Are you sure this is the only one you want or do you want to keep looking?" The man asked.
"I'll keep looking. Thank you!" She told him, politely with a smile.
"If you need anything else, be sure to tell me." He told her before walking off to wrap the painting up in bubble wrap.
The tall woman continued rummaging through the ghost paintings box, seemingly knowing what exactly she was looking for. She seemed to have known what they actually were and didn't want anyone knowing who she was because of it. She noticed the Boolossus painting and also picked it up as well. "I found another one that I'd like to buy, sir!" She announced to him.
"Wonderful! Bring it here and let me take a gander at it to set a price for that one too."
She listened to the short old man and he looked at the painting she was holding. "8,000!" He settled with. "That'll make your total... 18,000 dollars."
"Got it!" She nodded, giving him the money before quickly leaving. The Toad still couldn't help but think something was unusual about the woman but he didn't want to seem rude so he chose not to say anything.
The Professor only counted all the money that he received from the mysterious woman. "You see, my boy! That's how you do business!"
The Toadstool only rolled his beady eyes in response. "Yeesh... He only made one big sale and he thinks he's the big smart guy here... That woman seems very fishy to me..."
***
It was a long day for the old man but he did finally manage to make enough money so he could take up residence in Evershade Valley after learning that the ghosts there were friendly. He was eager to examine the ghosts that lived there without fear of being attacked by them. He was thrilled to learn about them but he wasn't aware of the trouble he would later cause from his greediness. A mistake that would put him and his friend into a dangerous situation that could have been prevented.

A/N: That is the start of my very first story adaptation for a video game. I do plan to do Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga as well but I figured since Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon's anniversary was today (or more like yesterday since I'm a little bit late) that I would start this one first since I did already know how I wanted to start this one anyways and I did start playing the game again today. Although, This part wasn't really shown in the game itself it was still mentioned. So this is basically a back story of the game. Next chapter will be the next part of the prologue before it gets more into the actual in-game events though. But since this is my first story adaptation of a video game, I would like some feedback on how well it goes and if I should change some things.
Happy 10th anniversary to Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon!!
More chapters will be coming but this story will most likely have slow updates since it is based on a video game. It all depends on how far I can get through the game again. I feel I should play the entire game as I write this.
