Chapter 7- A-4 Visual Tricks

Several boos were happily hovering around their King, high pitched laughs and long pink tongues lolling out in satisfaction. The leader's own blue tongue lolled out, followed by the largest toothy smile a boo could ever conceive. "Ah... My loyal subjects! It is good to be here with you all again!" King boo's smile suddenly began to dissipate. The boos around him changed their expressions to match the kings own. "However, there is still some things that are missing. First and foremost, I must have a Luigi painting along side my Mario one as soon as possible."

"As you should your majesty, but how do you suppose we start? We can't just fight a ghost hunter who is armed without a proper plan." One boo spoke up.

"That's our only problem. I wouldn't dare put my subjects in danger again! Luigi and that old coot, Professor E. Gadd have it out for bookind. They will stop at nothing to take us all down to reduce our numbers. I just can't stop thinking about all the ways they tried to humiliate us and... yes, the real problem is that stupid vacuum—" King Boo growled in frustration.

"What kind of ruler would I be if I didn't retaliate when my subjects were being treated like trash by those repulsive ghost hunters!? All of you need to feel protected..." He definitely wasn't still holding this grudge on behalf of his subjects... He absolutely hated that he'd been 'beaten' especially by a coward like Luigi. He would never let that failure slide.

The King looked into a mirror remembering the power enhancing amethyst jewel. "Perhaps... This jewel can help us! Maybe I can give you a special ability of your own to use in combat against Luigi! Gather around me, my fellow boo comrades and I shall share a portion of my power to all of you!"

Mario's painting was sitting upside down against a wall, hearing every single word the boos were saying. "Oh Luigi... Please stay safe... You gotta get us both outta this! You gotta!"

Luigi waited patiently until E. Gadd was ready to send him off on his next mission when he was finally called back, the Professor immediately began randomly talking.

"I tell ya, Luigi, some things in this world are just too strange to be real. Some are real, of course, but some are illusions." He began.

"What do you mean by that, Professor?" Luigi asked.

"Here, I've got something to show you." Professor Gadd stated, he picked up a jar from his work desk that held a wispy-like, light purple orb inside of it.

"What is that?" Luigi asked, curiously.

"This is a Spirit Ball, a paranormal specimen with the ability to cause illusions. And someone is releasing a whole mess of 'em inside the Gloomy Manor!" Professor Gadd explained.

Like a curious child, Luigi tried reaching out to the container, trying to grab it from the Professor's hand to try to inspect it closer but Gadd quickly moved it away waving a finger in protest.

"That's why some of the objects in there—even whole suits of armor—have suddenly vanished! But trust me... They're still there!" Gadd went on.

"I noticed that the armor from the Guard Hall weren't there anymore the last time I checked, but when the lightning struck I still saw their silhouette on the wall where they should have been. Those spirit balls must be what affected them." Luigi replied.

"Exactly, my boy! Luckily. I created a special Poltergust 5000 attachment a while back that will help us." The monitor screen from the ceiling came down again, only now it showed a flashlight-like device.

"That looks familiar. I think I've seen it before when I was in the lab earlier. I know exactly where it is so this should be a piece of cake. Just so as long as I don't get ambushed by ghosts along the way." Luigi said.

"I call it the Dark-light device." Professor Gadd continued to ramble. "It's a nifty little doodad able to break illusions, such as objects that have been turned invisible." The screen went back up where it once was before the professor turned back to face Luigi.

"But with all the ghosts gone hostile. I haven't been able to return to my Lab to retrieve it. But now that you're here, you can get in there and grab it!"

"So... That task gets passed down to me, of course..." Luigi took out the Dual Scream to see where his next destination was.

"You'll find the Dark-Light Device attached to its charging station. It should be fully charged by now. OK, I'm sending you in. Prepare to be pixelated!"

Luigi groaned inwardly in despair. He didn't know what was worse; having to go back into the mansion to do E. Gadd's dirty ghost-busting work for him or being pixelated. He hated both of those things but he knew the enthusiastic Professor way too well. He will never take no for an answer. The Pixelator would never be his favorite mode of transportation anytime soon though. Everytime he felt disoriented using it—feeling nauseous when he felt his body breaking down into tiny pixelated chunks and not knowing where he was headed to.

"I am not prepared for this..." Luigi swallowed as he was being pixelated.

                                        ***

Once inside the entrance of the Gloomy Manor, Luigi decided to do some backtracking to find more treasure before working on his main objective. He heard a similar Greenie laugh coming from the Garage to his left and decided to investigate. He walked around the small room trying to find where it was coming from but only when he was about to give up his search and leave, a gold greenie lunged out from the Professor's car, frightening Luigi. After composing himself, he quickly struck the Gold Greenie with his strobulb and barely had to fight against it as it made for an easy catch.

"These ghosts look like Greenies but their golden variants. No wonder why they drop a lot more treasure... Maybe I should call them Goldies, for short."

During Luigi's short treasure hunt excursion, he noticed there was a lot more webs and spiders he had to vacuum up this time around. "I wonder where all these spiders are coming from?"

Luigi chose to ignore the thought for now as he moved on to the next room. The moment he opened the Guard Hall, he noticed the notorious suits of armor reappeared. Luigi began doing his usual run across the hall to avoid getting slashed by them again. He turned to look back at them before opening the doors to the Foyer.

From there, he entered the common hall, but as he approached the door to the lab, it mysteriously faded away! Luigi tilted his head in confusion, slowly backing up from the door. "Wh-what the...?! Wh-where's the door?!" He breathed.

Suddenly, an all too familiar, high-pitched giggle split the air, a sound which permeated the worst of Luigi's nightmares. For that sound—was a Boo's laughter. Luigi jolted in fear, squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head. He couldn't have just imagined that. "A-A boo! That had to have been a boo! Are boos native here?! Oh boy... I hope not..."

Luigi noticed a hole in the wall right next to the Lab and peeked through. The room looked similar to when he first went in there. Nothing out of the ordinary, that is until a blackboard and swivel chair started swerving around on its own. Luigi quickly pulled away from the hole and slowly backed up to the door. That's when the Dual Scream went off.

"He-Hello," Luigi answered the professor's call, a lot more timidly than he expected to.

"Luigi, am I seeing this right? Did the Lab's door just... disappear?"

"Y-Yes it did..." Luigi answered.

"It must have been haunted by Spirit Balls from inside the room! Hmm... I'm sure there's another way into the Lab!"

"I hope so or there wouldn't be a way for me to get in there to get the Dark-Light Device." That was until Luigi recalled seeing a fireplace in the parlor. "Actually I did notice a fireplace there, perhaps it could also be used as a secret passageway, like the fireplace in the study."

Well...There's only one way to find out... I'll leave you to it, Sonny! Good luck!"

"But...Wait, Professor..." Luigi tried to speak only to have the professor end the call. He wanted to mention the Boo laugh he heard but he didn't get the chance to. "Maybe I'll tell him later. It's not important right now."

With that, he headed back into the Foyer and started up the stairs... only for them to drop out from under him again.  He raised his head and glared at several Hiders who were making faces at him. When they saw him grab his vacuum, they made a beeline for the nearest hiding place. To make things worse, a Slammer arrived to help them.

Luigi chose that it was wise to engage the Slammer first. Once he stunned the large red ghost with his Strobulb, he began to pull it in. The Surge meter on the Poltergust 5000 flashed blue, and then green, before Luigi pressed the red button. Thanks to the upgrade, the improved Surge had made a significant impact on the ghosts he used it on. Luigi was able to capture the Slammer in one try.

The Hiders really stepped up their game as well. Realizing Luigi was getting much more skilled with the Poltergust 5000, they had their own new techniques up their sleeves. They were flinging banana peels as well as their usual projectiles and laughing at Luigi whenever he slipped on one and fell on his rear. But they weren't laughing for long, with Luigi stunning and sucking up two at a time. He defeated them in no time flat and still had enough breath in him to race up the stairs and into the Master Hall. He gasped in horror when he noticed the room was filled with large webs across the hallway and the ceiling. He swallowed hard, "I hate to see the spider that made these webs... It could be big enough to eat me like a tiny bug..." He trembled. Luigi tried to recompose himself, focusing on the most important task at the moment.

Luigi continued into the Parlor room. Just as he stepped inside, the fire in the fireplace extinguished, and that same Boo giggle sounded again as some more Spirit Balls exited the flue and entered the grandfather clock—making it invisible. Wasting no time, Luigi climbed into the fireplace and braced himself as he was dropped into the lab. From the impact of the drop, he went head over heels to the partially checkered floor of the lab. As soon as he reoriented himself, he saw what appeared to be a flashlight directing a beam of bright multicolored light on the ceiling.

"Oh! That must be the Dark-Light Device," Luigi thought to himself.

He walked over and reached out to take it, but then a Greenie wearing sunglasses popped out and startled him.

"I don't think so! You're not taking this that easily! Our Master told us about you and you can't have this. It will mess up his plan!" The Greenie spoke.

"W-Wait Master?" Before Luigi could compose himself, the Greenie took the Dark-Light Device, which was actually shaped like a flashlight bulb, and retreated into the lab's blackboard.

Remembering his last trip to the lab, Luigi went to the blackboard and used the vacuum to spin it around. The Greenie tumbled out, dazed, but those sunglasses he wore blocked the Strobulb's flash. The ghosts were definitely clever creatures to think of ways to avoid the Poltergust. Luigi would have to vacuum up the sunglasses first in order for the Strobulb to work and that's what he did.

It wasn't over yet, though. Two more Greenies wearing sunglasses emerged and surrounded Luigi. He quickly dealt with them in the same fashion—sucking up the sunglasses before stunning the Greenies and sucking them both up at once. He cleared out the room fairly quickly, triumphantly claiming the Dark-Light Device which conveniently landed on a table right in front of him. He removed the normal flashlight bulb and put it in his pocket before screwing in the Darklight bulb onto his flashlight nearly dropping it in the process.

Not too long after, he answered an incoming call from Gadd. "Hey, Professor."

"Luigi, whoever is releasing those Spirit
Balls is somehow able to avoid the Parasco-" The Professor stopped for a moment and adjusted his glasses. He noticed Luigi had the Dark-Light Device at last. "Wait! Is that—? You found the Dark Light Device! Good work, my boy!"

"Thanks."

"Why don't you try it out! I'm sure there's an illusion somewhere in that room."

"Got it, Professor! Ciao." Luigi put the Dual Scream away and looked around the lab using the Darklight to find hidden objects and sucked up the spirit balls that appeared around him. He revealed a safe and a tool box finding some treasure in the process. After that, he faced the exit and used the Darklight-Device to reveal the hidden door that previously vanished in front of his own two eyes, sucking up more spirit balls as they appeared. As he used the strobulb on the door an all too familiar silhouette showed up on the wall. It belonged to a boo. "I-I knew there was a boo here! But where is it now?"

He left the Lab when he immediately got another call from Gadd. "Again?" Luigi sighed, starting to get slightly annoyed.

"Excellent, Luigi! I won't have to ask you to leave now... because you've already shown yourself the door!" The Professor laughed. "Now, then. Have you been hearing that creepy laughter?"

I guess he already knows. Of course... He does. "Y-Yes! It's got to be a-"

The Professor interrupted Luigi as he continued talking. "Whoever is releasing those Spirit Balls seem to be enjoying himself!"

"Have you found where he could be yet?" Luigi asked.

"I'm not having any luck with the Parascope, so it's up to you to find him and put a stop to him!"

"Got it!" Luigi put the Dual Scream back in his pocket and continued exploring the Gloomy Manor. He used the Dark Light to reveal a drawer that was below a window and sucked up a spider web that covered it. As soon as the window was clear, three bats flew into the Hall almost attacking Luigi. Lucky for him, he was prepared to flash them with the Strobulb to defend himself. Luigi sighed in relief. "Atleast I noticed them or that would have been bad..." With that taken care of, Luigi opened the shelves of the drawers to find some cash before moving on to the end of the master hall. Luigi saw a doormat and shone his Dark-Light Device at the wall, revealing the door.

By the corner of his eye, he noticed something also trying to materialize out of a monochrome painting from the multicolored light of the Dark Light. It was a key! He stared at it with intrigued blue eyes before turning the Dark-Light device on it again. The key became colorized and fell out of the painting, landing on the carpet.

"Fascinating," mused Luigi. "I guess I can take things out of paintings with this device!"

He unlocked the door, pushed it open and walked out into the patio, where more of those flowers awaited. Two of them to be exact. He flashed the Strobulb at them and vacuumed up the dollar bills they spat out. Then Luigi used the vacuum to spin the merry-go-round until a fountain of treasure geysered from it.

He also sucked up clumps of dirt and uncovered more illusions with the Dark-Light. One of them was an invisible Cheep-cheep statue in a nearby fountain. He noticed that the two that were in the fountain looked out of place and once he used the Dark-Light where a third one should have been he was not disappointed. Once it was visible, Luigi noticed a rectangular Amethyst was spat out from its mouth once he captured all of the Spirit Balls. He retrieved it and continued finding more treasure around the outside patio.

Another illusion was a statue of Gadd with a propeller mounted on top. Luigi could've missed that illusion if it wasn't for two crows seemingly perched in midair. Spinning the propeller raised the statue, revealing another key. He pocketed it and used the Strobulb on a third flower, earning himself more treasure in the process.

During all of this, Luigi noticed that the Spirit Balls made tiny squeaking noises as he vacuumed them up. It was something he didn't notice before until he was using the device constantly, getting used to all it had to offer. Another thing he realized a bit too late was that the Dark-Light device would overheat and burn out if he held down the button for too long. Also causing him to burn his hand in the process. The moment it happened, Luigi felt a red hot sensation go through his white glove and began burning his hand, dropping the flashlight in a panic, he inspected his now burning hand. He used the water from the fountain to cool it down before picking up his flashlight again. He had to wait a couple seconds for the Dark-Light to cool down and recharge before using it again.

"Mamma Mia! I guess I have to be more careful with it from now on... I wished the Professor told me about that..." Luigi thought.

Meanwhile, he revealed another hidden door which took him under the stairs, where some treasure and some golden spiders awaited. Another door took him behind the aquarium in the Foyer, where another Amethyst gemstone was located. Only this one was shaped like a star. He found another golden bone from a vase before unlocking the door to the kitchen with his recently found key.

The kitchen was dark, and Luigi could hear some ghosts bustling about. He noticed a rolling pin moving on its own over a fish. Even the fish was picked up and was moved to a different direction as if someone was in the middle of cooking it. He moved towards the moving objects to investigate then further when those same old gates slammed down over the doors. Two Hiders, an unarmed Greenie and an armed Greenie revealed themselves. The Hiders kept Luigi on his toes by flinging all sorts of fruits and vegetables at him, while the armed Greenie tried to bash him with a rolling pin and the unarmed Greenie taunted him. He took care of the Hiders before dealing with the armed Greenie, who nearly wracked him on the head with the rolling pin, but fortunately for Luigi he swiftly ducked in time to avoid the attack. It was a rough fight, but Luigi stayed with it and won, eventually taking out the two greenies. Then he continued on his way.

Luigi took a detour to the Library in hopes to find more treasure when he noticed something looked off in the other side of the room. He used the Dark-Light to reveal a globe. Being the klutzy brother he was, he dropped it and it shattered. Surprisingly, he found an oval shaped Amethyst in the rubble. He collected it and went back into the previous room.

He took the secret passageway up to the dining room, where he was greeted with a sight that made his blood run cold...

A Boo hovered above the dining room table, casting Spirit Balls all over it and making it disappear. The Boo cackled at his handiwork before flying off.

At last the culprit responsible for the objects disappearing was revealed. Luigi was shocked to see a boo in front of him but was even more surprised to see the new ability he had. Luigi has never seen a boo do this before. He looked out the window, hoping the boo wasn't right outside and could return at any moment. He saw nothing but the large full moon.

"I guess it's gone. I might as well fix this whole mess the boo caused before I leave though. I can't just leave it like this."

Luigi used the Dark-Light device to expell the Spirit Balls from the objects that were turned invisible making a drawer and the dining room table visible again. There were so many of them in the small room that Luigi couldn't avoid touching all of them. Whenever some of the Spirit Balls touched him, he winced in pain. They may have looked cold but they were in fact very scorching hot when they were touched. Once Luigi got every last spirit ball in the Poltergust everything was back to normal.

However, not too long after he finished, the Boo returned. Disgruntled confusion scrawled across his features when he noticed that his work had been undone. That confusion then turned to anger when the Boo eyed the green clad plumber responsible for ruining his fun.

"You!" the Boo snapped. "What are you doing here?!"

"What are you doing here?" Luigi retorted.

"I asked you first!" The Boo argued before his expression changed to a grin—signature to the boo species. "No matter. Now that you're here, it's time to have some fun! I'm Boouncer! You think you can be in here? Naw, mate! Not with those shoes. Now clear off!"

The Boo cackled and swooped toward
Luigi, who ducked in the nick of time. He popped his head back up to see that the Boo had disappeared, turning his head quickly left and right, the cowardly ghost hunter looked around in terror for his most dangerous attacker thus far.

The Boo cackled. "Catch me if you can!" the Boo sang out, teasingly.

"H-How...?" muttered Luigi, and then it occurred. "Maybe the Dark-Light can uncover Boos as well as illusions."

He flashed the multicolored light in the direction of the cackling, causing the Boo to rematerialize. Luigi also found out that the Dark-Light could stun the Boo, causing them to stick out their tongues. Without missing a beat, Luigi suctioned onto the Boo's tongue, pulled it taut, and then released it like a slingshot. He stood back and watched as the Boo bounced all over the dining room like a ball. The Boo then came to a stop, where he laid there, dazed. Luigi ran over and captured them, having to briefly jump on them like a pogo stick so they could fit inside the vacuum. "Phew... That was easier than I thought. Thankfully I had the Dark-Light Device."

The lights came back on once Luigi vacuumed up the Boo, and then Gadd called. "It's about time!"

"You OK, Luigi?"

"I-I think so... I-"

"Criminy! What in tarnation was a Boo doing here in the valley?!" E. Gadd shouted.

That's exactly what I was wondering. "Wait, you mean they are not native here?"

"Absolutely not. That's the first boo I've seen here. Good thing you had the Dark-Light Device with you, or you'd have been in real trouble! Let get you out of there. Hold on tight!"

"Grazie a dio... Atleast that's over now. But... Why are boos here?" Luigi swallowed, thinking about something he didn't want to think of again... Not now... Please not now... Don't tell me, h-he's back!

Once Luigi was back in the Lab, he sighed in relief to see the Professor in person again. "Excellent! I'm positively tickled that my Dark-Light Device worked!"

The Professor let Luigi empty the Poltergust before he continued talking. "You already got enough money to upgrade it too. Thanks to this upgrade, I'll make the Dark-Light not overheat as quickly! That way it'll make it easier to use for a longer period of time."

"That'll be a huge improvement! Thanks, Professor!" Luigi replied, happily.

"It's concerning to find a Boo in the Gloomy Manor. Boo's always spell trouble—especially if they gang up! If you see any more, be sure to capture them right away!"

"P-Professor, you don't have to remind me." Luigi shuddered. "I already know how to handle boos... Especially after that... Experience... I just hope they don't escape."

"I have a special container just for Boos down in the vault. Funny story, actually. You may remember that I used to have a device called the Portrifica-"

Luigi quickly interrupted the Professor. "I know, Professor... I was there... I don't want to be reminded of that night anymore! Just don't mention it!"

"O-Oh... Sorry Sonny," E. Gadd apologized, looking concerned. Before he had a chance to press the matter further, the Professor's mind focused on something else. "Luigi... Huh? Hold on a sec. The Parascope is acting up." He spun his swivel chair to the console and pressed a few buttons in some sort of panic.

"What? What's wrong with it?" Luigi asked.

"Something isn't right, Luigi. The signals coming from the Gloomy Manor are... Give me a minute. I need to figure this out."

"Okay. I'll leave you to it," said Luigi, beginning to leave but stopped for a second. "I-I didn't mean to get sharp with you just now. It's just that I don't wanna go back there right now. The first mansion all those years ago was just way too much to take in for me. Especially when my brother was involved in it in such a way, I never expected could happen..."

"I...understand," said Gadd. "Run along now, youngster. I'll let you know if something comes up."

Luigi smiled at his mentor before heading off.

Finally that's the end of this chapter. Hope you enjoyed. More coming soon.. The next chapter might be a longer wait than this one was.

Boouncer is actually a name of a boo in the British version of the game. He took the place of Booger from the American version but I decided to use this boo's name as the first boo instead of leaving him unnamed.

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon released in the North America on this day, March 24th in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS systems. That makes the original game 11 years old now. Soon we will have an updated version for the switch—going by the name Luigi's Mansion 2 HD which looks a lot better next to Luigi's Mansion 3 in a few months. Once I get the updated version of the game updates may be much more frequent. My cartridge is starting to die so a lot of the time it refuses to read. At the moment, it's working fine again but updates could be very slow if it refuses to work for me again. It just depends on if it likes me to decide to work or not.
