Love Letters

“Lu-chan!”, Levy shouted, skipping her way towards Lucy.

“What is it Levy-chan?”, Lucy smiled happily at her. Natsu raised an eyebrow on the blue-haired mage.

“Can I talk to you for a second?”, Levy stopped in front of their table and eyed Natsu. “Alone”, with that Natsu seems to understand what Levy was trying to imply. She clearly wants them to leave. Pouting a little, Natsu and Happy stomped their feet, walking away from them and sat on the bar counter, asking MIrajane for fire foods perhaps. When Levy was sure Natsu was far enough for them to be heard, she created a rune barrier around them to make sure no one will be able to hear anything from them. Some members of the guild looked at them suspiciously.

“What’s with the barrier Levy-chan?”, Lucy looked at Levy with confusion.

“Well, that’s because I’m too embarrassed for anybody else to hear this. I only want to ask you for advice Lu-chan. I am having a really hard time for this”, Lucy saw Levy made such a troubled face while she fidgets in their seat.

“Alright, I’ll hear you out Levy-chan, what is it that you want to seek advice from me?”, Lucy soothed the Solid Script mage’s worries with her words. Levy’s face lit up at the sound of her friends help.

“Well you see, I kind of feel a little strange with Gajeel. I seem to become sensitive with seeing or being near him. Every time he was near, I got scared, when he gazes at me, I fidgets and my heart beats really fast. I don’t know what to do!”, Levy told her in a fast pace.

“Calm down Levy-chan! I can’t understand if you talk fast like that!”, Lucy tried to calm Levy down. Levy let out a heavy sigh with a sad look on her face. Suddenly, Gajeel stepped inside the guild. Both mages glanced at each other before Levy turned and averted her gaze with a deep blush on her face. Lucy saw her reaction and smiled. She smacked Levy’s shoulders lightly but hard enough for Levy to look at her with a confused expression.

“Lu-chan?”, Levy asked.

“You’re worrying too much Levy. You like him that is all!”, Lucy seriously said with a smile.

“W…what? Yo…you…..you don’t….really? I….well….it’s not like I’m….”, Levy stuttered and panicked. Finally, she held her breath and let it out with a sigh. “Really Lu-chan? You think I really like him?”, Levy asked.

“Positive! With your expressions when you see him, I would say it’s more like a love than a like”, Lucy grinned at her. Levy blushed so hard and looked once again at Gajeel who was no longer at the door.

“Hey shrimp, what’s with the barrier?”, Levy literally jumped from her seat when Gajeel’s voice startled her. She didn’t know Gajeel was already in front of them.

“Levy-chan, you better tell him your feelings, I’ll support you all the way, alright?”, Lucy smiled at her. Levy nodded and dispersed the barrier.

“So, wanna tell me what you and Bunny-girl were talking about?”, Gajeel asked, hands crossed on his chest.

“Well…you see…I….”, Levy stuttered, her face resembles a tomato. “I….I…..about the letter before….I…”

“Hm?”, Gajeel leaned a little closer. Levy stepped back but was stopped by Lucy. Lucy held Levy’s shoulder as sign of support. Levy gained a little more confidence.

“Gajeel”, Levy looked at him seriously. Now it was Gajeel who stepped back. “I like you”, Levy said too low for anyone to hear. Gajeel heard it faintly but didn’t quite catch it at first.

“What did you say?”, Gajeel asked for clarity and leaned closer once again.

“I SAID I LIKE YOU, YOU IDIOT!”, Levy snapped. Everyone at the guild froze at turned their heads to the three at the center making a huge commotion.

“WHAT?!”, Everyone shouted at a smiling Lucy, an awestruck Gajeel and Levy who looks like a human tomato now. Gajeel stayed in his still form as he tried to process what he heard from her. Levy ran outside the guild with tears flowing from her face.

“Levy-chan!”, Lucy was left with her hands held upward. Lucy turned to scold Gajeel’s stillness but when she looked for the Iron Dragon slayer, he was out of sight. Natsu pointed his finger to the door as way of direction. When Lucy followed it, she saw the Iron Dragon Slayer ran his way to catch up with the crying Solid Script Mage. Everyone at the guild was smiling as they look to the two who just ran outside. Well, not everyone, for there is two people crying their hearts out from the scene. I’m sure all of you know who those two were.

The guild was as busy as the other days should be, the only thing different is the closeness of the two mages who just got together yesterday. Gajeel and Levy were together in taking missions and hanging out the guild. The only time they were separated was when it’s time to go home. Gajeel is making sure Levy was safe at home before he himself goes to his. He was also picking the girl up in the morning and let her pick a job for both of them to share. He doesn’t mind Levy picking such an easy job for them for he knows Levy was not really a very powerful mage and the risk of endangering her life must have been a consideration for him. In short, he was being a protective boyfriend.

“Ah man, Gajeel has become an ass. He’s weaker to look right now.\”, Natsu put his hands at the back of his head as he eyed the two at the corner of the guild.

“Natsu, you really shouldn’t see it that way, he was just being protective of Levy, rather than seeing him weak, he looks more mature than you guys”, Erza complemented, making Natsu stop whining at the Iron Dragon Slayer.

“But who would have thought that guy would really come down to this state huh?”, Gray shrugged.

“Gray-sama, your clothes”, Juvia blushed and fidgeted.

“When did this happen?”, Gray exclaimed.

“What an idiot”, Charle said.

“Aye sir!”, Happy agreed.

“I heard Levy-san gave Gajeel-san a love letter”, Wendy said.

“Love letter huh? I remember creating one, it didn’t go smoothly as I planned”, Juvia glumly said.

“Who did you gave it to?”, Gray asked. Juvia blushed hardly.

“She tried giving it to you dummy, who did you think Juvia will give it to? There no one else she could have thought of giving it other than you!”, Natsu mocked.

“What’s that? You dare called me a dummy, stupid torch?”, Gray stood up and initiated a fight.

“That’s because you asked such a stupid question when you already knew the answer you freaking stripper!”, Natsu scowled back.

“I didn’t even know she created that letter and I didn’t even received it! Besides at least I was given letters but knowing you? I will hardly believe it if you even receive at least one from a girl!”, Gray responded.

“Knock it off! Are you two fighting already when there are girls in front of you?”, Erza glared at them. Instantly, the two boys straightened and sat back quietly.

“Well what happened Juvia-san? I thought for sure you gave it to him”, Wendy said. “I gave mine to Romeo the same day you did”

“Juvia accidentally made it wet due to her nervousness leaving the letter all messed up”, Juvia confessed her clumsiness.

“You gave a love letter to Romeo?”, Lucy asked in shock. “Wendy is still young for these things!”, Lucy thought.

“Only a letter though, I was trying to ask him to accompany me on a mission with Fried-san just like before since we both can’t go on missions alone yet”, Wendy explained.

“Oh”, Lucy said with a sigh of relief. “A love letter huh? Maybe I should create one too”, Lucy looked at Natsu who was hungrily eating his food. She felt her cheeks burn. “What the heck? What am I thinking! Did I just looked at Natsu? Oh no! I couldn’t possibly think of giving him a love letter! Wait, I just said I’m giving him a love letter? Wait what? AHHH! Lucy you idiot stop making such ideas!”, Lucy panicked at her thoughts.

“LUCY!!!”, Lucy was snapped from her reverie when Natsu’s voice rang loudly on her ear.

“WHAT IS IT!”, Lucy snapped back.

“Tomorrow’s the Harvest Festival, wanna come?”, Natsu asked.

“Well sure, what about you guys?”, Lucy asked Erza and the rest.

“Sorry, I made plans of going to an S-class mission tomorrow with Juvia and Gray”, Erza said, Gray and Juvia nodded in agreement.

“Well, tomorrow’s our mission with Fried-san as well, and Charle wants to take Happy with us too”, Wendy excused herself as Happy was bowing his head for an apology.

“What? How can you go on a mission when there’s a festival tomorrow? Don’t you all want to see the Sakura Blossoms bloom?”, Lucy asked them.

“Well, we already participated last year, and you haven’t so, I wish you’ll just enjoy yourselves”, Erza said.

“But! I could go on a mission with you too”, Lucy insisted but Natsu stopped her when he held her hand.

“Lucy, you’ve been sick last year because of a mission which caused you not to see the Cherry Blossoms bloom so I thought of suspending a mission for you to enjoy tomorrow’s festival. Don’t you want to see and participate on the festival yourself not just by looking at it out your window? I won’t uproot another tree just for you to see because last time I almost had Gramps angry with me for a week”, Natsu explained with a pout. Somehow Lucy felt guilty and touched by his words. He didn’t made any plans of having a mission on the day itself just for her to participate and to make sure she won’t get sick again.

“Alright. Thank you Natsu”, Lucy gave out a warm smile. Natsu turned his gaze away and said that he has to get fire food from Mira again.

“Looks like Natsu matured a bit as well”, Erza complimented.

“Yeah, I guess he kind of are”, Lucy said in agreement.

“I still think he’s an idiot”, Gray said.

“I COULD HEAR YOU GRAY!”, Natsu scowled from the counter. Wendy and the others from the group sweat-dropped and just smiled at him wryly.

That night, Lucy was thinking about what she’ll do for tomorrow, Natsu promised her he would pick her up by 5 o’clock at dusk so she still has time to get ready. Lucy was thinking about how those Love Letters helped Levy tell her feelings for Gajeel and how Juvia failed to give hers. She was weighing her options of whether or not to give Natsu a love letter or not. Sure she has developed feelings for the Fire Dragon Slayer but she don’t know how to get in through to him. He was just a dense idiot who doesn’t take things seriously. He seems to just take everything as a joke and wave it off. A part of her was saying to create one but half of her says no.

“Its not like I would give it to him anyway”, with that thought Lucy darted off to sleep.

____________________________________________________________

The next morning, Lucy starts writing down on a piece of white paper. It was not like a letter of confession, rather, she was just writing down her thoughts, her feelings for the past year of being with Natsu. The past one and a half year since she met him, all those times that he helped her, through bad times, and good, all those memories they shared with everyone at the guild, she extracted all her thoughts to it. Her feelings of gratitude even to the littlest things that he do for her, and even her feelings of sadness and anger towards him at times when he was so dense that she could slap him in the face; every time he sneaks in her apartment, how hard he tried to make her agree with him sleeping on her bed; she wrote all of it down in that letter. All the feelings she felt for him was inside that letter. As she sealed the letter with his name on top, she looked at it. She’s not going to give it to him, she just want to write it down to lift the overflowing feelings in her chest. Yes, that was what Lucy decided foe she doesn’t want to change what relationship they have right now. For her, being friends and close to each other like this was enough, or was it? As her thoughts were being drawn to her trance, a wind blew the letter out the window. She tried to catch it and stop it from leaving her premises but her attempts failed. With a fast beating heart, she ran and followed the letter outside.

“Oh no! If anybody read it, I’m in deep trouble! What’s worse, it’s almost four and the sun is beginning to set! Natsu will be here soon!”, Lucy ran faster as the letter just flew above her.

Natsu made his way inside Lucy’s apartment when he didn’t hear anyone respond his calls. He searched for Lucy but smelled her scent faintly indicating that she was not in her apartment anymore. Following his nose, he ran where her scent leads him to.

“Just when I was about to be able to see the Cherry Blossoms and the festival, this thing happened! What should I do?!”, Lucy was getting tired of running. “I lost track of my letter”, she slumped on the ground. The streets are starting to turn their lights on. When she was about to give up, another wind blew past her and she saw her letter being blown again. She ran again to take a hold of it.

With all the running, she didn’t notice the darkness and she stopped in front of a full bloomed Cherry Blossom. Lucy was amazed at the sight she was seeing. Her feelings were drawn back at her as she fell in love with the view of the Cherry Blossom. She was at a park with the Cherry Blossom at the middle of it. Her letter was forgotten as she looks at the tree.

“Lucy”, Lucy turned her gaze as she heard her name being called by none other than her partner – Natsu Dragneel. Her heart was filled with guilt for not coming back in her apartment on time. He must have waited and looked for her.

“N…Natsu”, she turned around to meet his gaze. Brown orbs meet Onyx ones. She could have melted with his gaze at her but her stare was distracted when she saw her letter drop behind Natsu. Natsu saw her reaction and turned to see a letter lying on the ground. He glanced to her one last time before turning and walked towards the letter.

“No, don’t! Don’t take it! Please, stop! I don’t want you to read it Natsu!”, Lucy screamed in her head but she can’t utter a word. Instead she just looked at Natsu’s every step until his hands take a hold of the letter. She felt herself crying as she reviewed in her head all the times they’ve been together. The weight of her feelings that she lifted with that letter overflowed her rapidly beating heat once again.

“This letter…”, Natsu started.

“Natsu, that letter, please….please don’t read it”, Lucy managed to choke out, tears welling up her eyes. “Please Natsu, don’t open it”, Lucy’s lip trembled. She can’t look at him right now. A hand touched her cheeks and she lifted her head to see Natsu grinning at her.

“You know, you make such a weird face Lucy. Come on! Let’s see the festival, the fireworks were about to start!”, Natsu grinned at her. Lucy felt her heavy burden got lighter with his denseness. This was the first time she thanked how dense he gets at these things. Her tears flowed but smiled at him radiantly.

“Yeah, let’s watch it together”, she said, not minding the letter at his hands. “With this, I can say goodbye to my feelings for him”, Lucy’s eye shed a tear.

The two enjoyed their night together looking at the Cherry Blossoms which makes a shade of rainbow as it blooms. They fancied the fireworks as they looked up, being amazed at how well they lighted the skies. Lucy and Natsu felt complete with each other. They returned to the Cherry Blossom tree at the park where Lucy still gets amazed by it.

“Natsu, is this the same tree you uprooted before for me?”, Lucy asked.

“Yeah, it was harder than I thought. You should have seen our faces. Happy had a hard time looking for a large pot big enough for us to plant this tree”, Natsu explained.

“You did all of it for me?”, Lucy smiled wryly, her back still facing him. She really don’t want to look at him directly.

“Of course, you’re our friend Lucy, we can’t enjoy the festival without you so I thought letting you see the Cherry Blossom Tree you were so excited of seeing”, Natsu said.

“I see”, Lucy felt a hard rock being thrown at her. Her chest squeezed and she feels like gasping for air. The word “friend” lingers in her head. From inside her heart, Lucy felt a little disappointed for not letting Natsu read her letter. As she looks up, she regretted ever telling herself that being friends was enough. It was never enough. As long as he is beside her, her feelings keep overflowing.

“I can’t….I just can’t with him being this close to me….I can’t say goodbye to this feelings….I was wrong! I don’t want to be simply friends anymore!”, Lucy cried. Natsu noticed her crying.

“Lucy what’s wrong? You’ve been really weird lately, are you sick again? You should have told me so…”, Lucy interjected what Natsu was about to say.

“Natsu…the letter……well”, Lucy stuttered.

“Letter? Oh yeah, wait, is this yours Lucy?”, Natsu asked. “I’m sorry if I picked it up, good thing I haven’t re….”

“READ IT”, Lucy beat him to it. Natsu was taken aback from what she said. “Natsu, I want you to read it”, Lucy said, more like ordered.

“What? It’s yours isn’t it?”, Natsu said.

“Natsu, I wrote that for you. Your name’s written on it idiot”, Lucy said as she guided him. Natsu turned the letter, exposing its front. His eyes widened when he saw his name written on it with Lucy’s handwriting. He opened and read the contents. Lucy’s heart gets quicker by the minute as she looks at Natsu reading it all. She know Natsu would be able to understand it because he can perfectly read now with all the training he gets from her and Erza. Natsu finished reading it and just froze in shock like Gajeel. His hand holding securely the letter which was closed like it originally was before.

Lucy was afraid to talk and break the silence but looking at how still Natsu was, he will clearly not move for the next five minutes so Lucy had to talk first.

“Natsu, the truth is, I never really intend to give that letter to you. I just wanted to get these feelings off my chest. I can’t run away from how I feel anymore. I just…..it hurts so much Natsu. I can’t look at you as a friend any longer! It must have happened since I met you one and a half year ago. Natsu…all this time….all this time….from a long time ago…I’ve been..I’ve been in love with you Natsu!”, Lucy was finally able to say it.

She felt like the overflowing feelings she had in her chest blew a thousand shreds. Lucy cried as she slumped on the cold ground. Natsu on the other hand, hearing Lucy’s confession, gripped tighter at the letter and his face blushed a crimson red, the same colour as his fire. His blush was visible even under the shade of the Cherry Blossom Tree. He was intently looking at the crying Lucy. He started to walk towards her with a very calm and soothing expression. He helped her stand up and kept her there.

“Lucy, look at me”, Natsu took Lucy’s chin to fix her gaze on his. “Don’t cry idiot”, Natsu grinned at her as his thumbs wipe away her tears.

“Natsu…I”, Lucy started.

“Don’t talk anymore Lucy. I get it, I really do. Now I understand how Gajeel became like that, I feel like I’m turning like him too”, Natsu said calmly. Lucy’s eyes widened in hearing this; she was feeling light-headed now. Natsu enveloped her body in a tight embrace. Lucy gripped his shoulders as she cried more. “Lucy, I’m in love with you too”, Natsu said pulling away from her to see her face.

“Natsu..”, Lucy gripped Natsu’s hand as they both leaned for a gentle kiss. Even if it’s not under the mistletoe, they felt like the Cherry Blossom tree was enough to bind them together forever.

“I didn’t know Love Letters could really work”, Lucy thought.

“That Gray will never know I received one from Lucy unless he notices it himself”, Natsu thought as he gripped tightly at Lucy.

“I’ve never expected the festival to be this fun”, Natsu said with a slight blush.

“Me too”, Lucy smiled at him.

“Come on, let’s get you home”, Natsu held Lucy’s hand as they walk back to Lucy’s apartment.

“I guess I’ll start looking like Gajeel from now on”, Natsu thought as they walked with a grin on his face. He hadn’t felt any happier.
