Chapter 3

When Qrow gets home, the only one up was Tai.

"Hey, how was your day?" Tai asked.

"Good...what are you doing up?" Qrow replied.

"Just wanted to make sure you made it home alright." Tai answered.

"No, you wanted to make sure I didn't stop at the bar." Qrow said frowning.

"N-no! I...*sigh* okay, maybe I was a little worried about that." Tai admitted slumping his shoulders.

"I knew it. I knew you didn't trust me to be out of your sight." Qrow said angrily, but quietly so he doesn't wake the girls.

"I do trust you." Tai defended.

"If you trusted me, you wouldn't be watching my every move like I'm a toddler. I got enough of that in rehab, I don't need that from you, especially from you. Stop treating me like I'm made of glass...please just treat me like a normal person!" replied Qrow, his voice cracking a little.

Before his eyes could fill up with tears, Qrow quickly walks off to his room and locks the door to keep Tai from bothering him. Laying in his bed, Qrow buries his face into his pillow. Ever since Qrow got out of rehab, Tai had been watching him like a hawk when he could. Deep down, Qrow knows that Tai means well, but that doesn't make it hurt less. Qrow didn't get the chance to change clothes before he fell asleep; so all night, he sleeps in his work clothes and shoes.

The next day, Qrow gets up early and heads to work before anyone else woke up. At the station, Qrow continues to search through the case files from yesterday.

"Hey, you started without me." Clover said sitting at Qrow's desk.

"How long have you been looking through these?" he asked.

"Since 5:30." replied Qrow.

"Wow, early riser. You didn't skip breakfast again, did you?" Clover said.

"So what if I did. It's not like it's any of your business." Qrow replied a little snappy.

Clover folds his arms over his chest and gives his new partner an amused smug. He pokes fun at Qrow for being cranky in the morning.

"Sorry...I was in a bad mood, but that's no reason to speak to you that way." Qrow apologized.

"It's okay, we all get cranky sometimes. We're all human after all." Clover replied.

"May I ask what upset you?" he asked.

"It's kinda personal." Qrow answered, rubbing the back of his neck.

"I understand." Clover said.

Qrow and Clover get back to work...but still couldn't find what they were looking for.

"Uhg! You know what, maybe this guy doesn't have a pattern...maybe there is no method to his madness." Qrow groaned in frustration.

"Well, maybe the madness is his method." replied Clover.

"If that's true, then everyone is a target to this b*stard." Qrow grumbled.

His phone buzzes, signaling a text message. He grabs his phone and reads the message. It was Ruby, she was heading to Subway to get his lunch and wanted to know what he wanted. Then another text came in from Ruby asking what Clover wanted from Subway.

"I don't mean to pry, but who's texting you?" Clover asked.

"My niece, Ruby. She's getting lunch and asked what I wanted...she's also asking for what you want." answered Qrow.

"Aww, how thoughtful." Clover said with a grin.

He tells Qrow what to tell Ruby to get him. Qrow gets a foot long meatball sub with mozzarella and parmesan on Italian herb and cheese bread; and Clover gets a foot long veggie sandwich that has lettuce, spinach, tomato, and pickles with mayo on wheat bread. This time, Qrow pokes fun at Clover for eating like a rabbit. Which Clover replies with a light hearted laugh.

When Ruby arrives with the food, Clover tries to pay her back for his, but she refuses.

"It's fine, you don't owe me anything." Ruby told him.

"You're too sweet." chuckled Clover.

"I'd be happy to do anything for a friend of my uncle." Ruby said.

"He's quite lacking in that department." she added whispering.

"Hey! I heard that! I have friends." Qrow said with a slight pout.

"Oh, yeah...name one friend other than Dad." Ruby replied.

"Well, uhh...there's...how about...oh shut up!" Qrow pouted folding his arms.

"Aw, don't worry, I'll be your friend." Clover laughed patting Qrow's knee.

Ruby laughs then says goodbye and leaves. This became their routine for the next week. Qrow and Clover would work on whatever they were assigned to do, Ruby would bring them their lunch, they would get back to work, then Qrow would drive Clover to his hotel; all while exchanging witty banter. Throughout the week, Clover and Qrow have grown to be close friends. Qrow has even grown close to Robyn; but not Winter, he doesn't get along well with Winter.

"Don't mind her, Qrow, Ice Queen here is just mad that she was made to switch cases." Robyn tells Qrow after a heated argument between him and Winter.

"It's not fair! I've been working on that case for the past four years!" Winter huffed.

"Well, it's not like you were close to solving it. No one can get anything on Raven Branwen and her stupid Black Bird Gang." said Robyn.

Qrow immediately tenses at the mention of his sister.

"I wonder why." Winter said glaring at Qrow accusingly.

Everyone's jaw dropped, they couldn't believe what she was implying. Every inch of Qrow's body burned with anger.

"Are you implying that I'm conspiring with a known felon!" Qrow growled.

"Yes! Yes I am! She is your sister, after all." replied Winter.

"Do I look like the f**king Monopoly Man? I don't go around giving people a get out of jail free card, including my sister!" Qrow shouted.

"I haven't spoken to my sister in almost twenty years! She doesn't give a d*mn about her family! She left us! So, I'd appreciate it if you didn't talk about that b**ch in front of me!" he continued, starting to get worked up.

"It must be hard having a criminal for a family member." Winter said.

"Yeah...you would know, wouldn't you...Schnee. Tell me, how's your father doing in prison? What was he in for? Oh yeah, embezzlement and tax fraud." Qrow replied.

Winter looked like she was about to beat Qrow to death.

"You son of a b**ch." Winter said through gritted teeth.

Before anything escalated further, Robyn and Clover stepped in between the two. Robyn took Winter to another room, and Clover took Qrow over to his desk.

"Woah, that almost got out of hand...are you okay?" Clover said.

"No." Qrow answered sitting at his desk.

"I'm sorry your sister abandoned you like that. I can't imagine how that must've felt." Clover said sitting across from Qrow.

"It was the worst. All my life, it was just the two of us as we bounced from foster home to foster home. I thought I could count on her. But she deserted me, her husband, and her daughter." Qrow told him.

"Ruby?" Clover asked.

"No, Yang. Ruby is Summer's daughter; Tai's second wife and my old partner." answered Qrow.

"Did she quit or something?" Clover asked him.

Qrow didn't reply, he just looks down frowning and biting his bottom lip. In realization, Clover gasped and covered his mouth.

"Qrow...I-I...I'm so sorry." Clover quickly apologized.

"It's okay, you didn't know." Qrow still staring at the floor.

"How long...?" Clover began to ask, but stopped himself.

"Fourteen years." replied Qrow.

The detective looked to be on the verge of tears. Clover tried to think of something to do...to say, to make Qrow feel better.

"Guys, we gotta get going, another body's been found." Robyn said.

"Yeah, let's go." Qrow said getting up and leaving.

Sighing, Clover follows after him. The ride to the crime scene was quiet...extremely, uncomfortably quiet.
