Prologue

"Lucifer, I've just got the most brilliant idea."

Lucifer spared him a glance before going back to working. His hand worked fast, the letters appearing on the paper at a speedy rate. "What is it, Diavolo?"

He leaned forward on his desk as if he was telling a secret. He gleefully watched Lucifer at his own desk not too far away from him for a second. "Most schools have a student exchange program. Devildom has not had one yet. Do you know what this means?"

Lucifer stopped writing, gently placing his pen down to fully give Diavolo his attention. "I'm not quite sure I like where this is going."

"Devildom is going to have a student exchange program!" Diavolo answered his own question excitedly. "We'll have two human transfer students and two angels. What do you think?"

"How long will it last? How will they protect themselves?" He pinched the bridge of his nose, emitting a small sound of disapproval. "I hope you're not making this long term."

"We'll worry about the details at a later date," the prince dismissed, a smile dancing on his lips. "This will give us the opportunity to learn more about the human world and the angels. We'll be bringing all three worlds together."

I'd rather not be associated with the angelic realm. Lucifer bit back his response, instead settling to try to support Diavolo the best he could. He knew that when Diavolo's mind is set on something, it's hard to get him to change. "I'm not quite sure it's a good idea, but if you're set on it, I suppose I can't change your mind."

Diavolo laughed in response. "You know me too well, Lucifer."

"We've been friends for so long, it's a given." The avatar of pride felt his mouth run dry as he almost spat out the word friend. Oh, how he despised the word. Friend. As if you could ever fully trust someone like that. "Have you found a partner yet?"

He hummed thoughtfully. "If you're referring to my soulmate, then no, I haven't found mine yet. What about you?"

"What do you mean?" I didn't mean to change the subject to soulmates. I must remedy this. "Soulmates do not exist, they're only minor annoyances."

"Do you really believe that?" There was a certain undertone to Diavolo's voice that Lucifer most certainly did not like. It wasn't threatening but maybe just a tad intimidating. Of course, that would be intimidating to regular people. The avatar of pride did not get intimidated or scared in any circumstances.

"I do," he honestly admitted. Why wouldn't I believe that? Lucifer felt the concealed words on his wrist ache slightly, and shifted his gloves to try to cover it better. Father did only create soulmates to punish us- No, to punish me. I refuse to let him control my life, even now. I won't let him win. "What about soulmates is important? They don't have any use."

Diavolo's eyes softened ever so slightly. He maintained a small smile as he spoke. "Many would disagree with you. A lot of people find that having someone to share their life with is very comforting. Someone to share your thoughts with, to shoulder your burdens. . . Wouldn't you want someone like that, soulmate or not?"

Lucifer paused to consider the question. He opened his mouth to speak before closing it again. Eventually he sighed. "My burdens are my own. I do not need another to tell me what to do."

Knock, knock, knock.

The knocks hit the wooden door gently. "May I come in, m'lord?" A soft spoken person requested.

"Come in," Diavolo called out. His smile finally reached his eyes when he saw Barbatos walk in, Lucifer mentally noted. "Ah, Barbatos, a wonderful surprise."

"Thank you for thinking so, m'lord." Barbatos returned the smile.

Not being able to be in the room anymore, Lucifer gathered his things quickly. "I have finished my work, so I shall turn in for today," he announced to the two.

"Leaving so soon?" Diavolo spoke. Out of obligation most likely, Lucifer thought.

"Yes. Apologies." Lucifer calmly walked out of the room and could only feel relief as the door closed behind himself. To him, the energy in Diavolo's sub office was suffocating. He retreated back to the House of Lamentation, hoping to find happiness in seeing his brothers.

"Barbatos, have you gotten a response from the angels?"

"Yes, m'lord. They have agreed, and are sending the angels Simeon and Luke. Have you decided on the humans, yet?" He inquired curiously, standing in front of his master's desk respectfully.

"Only one so far." He hummed. "A human sorcerer named Solomon. And.. I want to invite the descendant of a certain person. Will you find them for me?"

"Of course. It would be my honor."

Diavolo grinned widely. "Wonderful. Thank you, Barbatos. I wish you good luck on your search."

Barbatos bowed. "Thank you, m'lord." He turned to leave.

"Barbatos."

He paused. "Yes, m'lord?"

". . .It's nothing." Diavolo gripped his pen just a little bit tighter when the other male left. He glanced at his wrist.
