The Season of the Witch

I had no recollection of my past or my identity when I woke up in the middle of a clearing, but I had a very strong feeling that I wasn't alone in the forest. My ears were ringing, and the sunlight was blinding my eyes. But that was no explanation for the low growls that I could clearly hear. Whoever made them sounded worse than just a pack of wolves, which would have been bad enough.

At first, I considered to stay where I was, wait for them to come upon me and kill me.

I don't know why anyone would do something as stupid, but I found it hard to move. Whatever had happened to me had drained most of my energy.

Then I saw them. A small girl whose features were obscured by a huge red cloak came running towards me and tried to hide behind a giant stone, but she wasn't fast enough for the large wolf with sparkling eyes who followed her. He was about to jump on her when -

"Freeze!"

I only realized what I had done when I had stood up, taken out a tiny wand from one of my pockets and said the spell.

Somehow, the spell worked, and the animal froze in mid-air.

The little girl looked at me, and perhaps the appearance of a witch frightened her more than the wolf had. "Please, don't hurt me!" she pleaded with me.

"Why should I hurt you?" I said and was more than confused. I had just saved her after all.

"Because everyone says that most witches are evil."

"Well, I'm not," I said, but I wasn't so sure whether that was true. Had I been an evil witch and lost some kind of a battle? Was that the reason why I couldn't remember who I was?

My answer seemed not intrigue her. "Are you here to free us from the monsters in the Enchanted Forest then?"

"How many monsters are we talking about?" I asked carefully.

"Like, most of the monsters that live in the kingdom live here."

"Why would you come here then?" I asked her because it didn't seem to make sense to me why a child would put herself in danger.

"Because my grandmother lives here. She is a good witch, too, you know, someone who fights the monsters. I'm training to become one one day. Come with me, and I'll introduce you to her," the girl suggested.

I didn't know what to say at first. The last thing I wanted was to get caught up in someone else's battle. On the other hand, if the girl's grandmother was a witch, she might be able to tell me who I was and what had happened to me. At least I hoped that was the case since it was also possible that she didn't know me at all. I thus said, "Okay. That sounds like a good idea."
