Soup (Gilbert Blythe)
A/n: Sorry, this isn't someone's request, I got a little carried away with writing this instead😅
It was a cold and dreary day in Avonlea. It was now winter time which was sometimes fun but not in this case. Y/n walked through the woods shivering as she took each step. She could feel her nose beginning to run and she groaned. She hated being sick.
She rubbed her arms as she came up to the schoolhouse and opened the door. She walked in and sighed at the warmth that went over her instantly. She put her coat on the coat rack then took her gloves and hat off.
She went over to her seat and sat down next to Anne who smiled at her. "Good morning, Y/n." She said happily and Y/n sniffled.
"Good morning." She sighed and placed her head onto the table. "Are you ok? You don't look too well." Anne asked now growing concerned. "I think I'll be ok." Y/n mumbled and Anne just took her word for it.
Gilbert then walked over and Anne looked up at him. "Is she alright?" He whispered to Anne and she just nodded. "I just think she has a cold." She replied and he got down on one knee beside her.
"Y/n, are you sure you're alright?" He asked and she picker her head up. "I said I'm fine." She reassured and he noticed that her cheeks were turning a slight pink.
He took this opportunity to place his hand on her forehead and his eyes widened at the touch. "You're burning up." He said now standing back up.
"Gilbert, I said I'm fine!" She exclaimed loudly and he looked at her slightly shocked. "Ok." He said backing away from her with his hands up and went back to his seat.
She grumbled and laid her head back on the table. She heard Mr. Phillips talking but she droned him out as she laid her head on the desk.
She sniffled and coughed into her shoulder. "Mrs. L/n, can you please tell me the answer to the problem on the board?" Mr. Phillips asked knowing that she wasn't paying attention.
Y/n moved her head up and sniffled as she looked up at the board. "I don't know." She shrugged and Mr. Phillips just frowned.
"Uh, Mr. Phillips. I actually think that Y/n has a cold and she should be at home getting some well needed rest." Gilbert said standing up. Josie Pye glared at Y/n who paid her no mind.
"I would be glad to take her home." Gilbert continued which made everyone begin to whisper. Mr. Phillips looked at Y/n and saw that she was now growing paler by the second.
"Very well. Go right ahead." Mr. Phillips replied and then continued on with the lesson. Gilbert stood up and walked over to Y/n. She huffed as she looked up at him and began to stand up.
They both walked over to the coat racks to put on the rest of their attire. Gilbert then turned towards her and placed his cold hand against her warm forehead again.
"Your fever has seemed to increase. We better hurry." He murmured and she just nodded, not up to arguing with him while she was feeling so horribly.
They walked out of the school house quickly but not too quick to where they would slip on the ice covered plains. They walked in complete silence with only the sounds of birds chirping filling the cold air.
They reached her home and Y/n walked in feeling the warmth that the house always brought her. "You should lay down, I'll make you some soup." Gilbert said gesturing over to her couch.
She didn't argue and laid down. She grabbed a blanket that was carelessly laying over the couch and wrapped herself in it. Even though her body was warm, she was still getting chills.
She curled into a ball and closed her eyes as she listened to Gilbert cook in the kitchen. She then felt him softly shake her and opened her eyes. There he stood with rosy cheeks and a bowl of soup on a tray, held in his hands.
Y/n sat up and he placed the tray into her lap. She began to eat the soup and Gilbert sat on the couch across from her.
"Why are you doing this?" She asked softly and continued to eat her soup. The soup was divine and felt wonderfully as the warmth spread throughout her. "Why not?" He smirked which just made her roll her eyes.
He always had a playful personality that he had only seemed to bring out when around her. "I mean, why? You never do anything like this for me? You just tease me and are always trying to outdo me." She said with her spoon now hitting the bottom of the bowl.
The soup was so delicious that she hadn't even realized it was all gone. She placed the tray onto the coffee table and just looked up at him still waiting for his answer.
"Can't I just do something nice for you?" He asked raising an eyebrow and she just shrugged. He then stood up and picked up her tray to take it back into the kitchen.
He placed the bowl and tray into the sink.
"Gilbert." She called after him and he looked over his shoulder at her. "Yes?" He asked growing concerned as he stared at her.
"Thank you." She breathed and he just smiled widely making his eyes wrinkle. Her heart fluttered at the sight, "My pleasure." He replied and turned back to the sink to tend to the dishes.
Y/n snuggled herself back into the couch and closed her eyes. She felt her cheeks become warm but this time it wasn't from her cold. It was a strange feeling but it was slowly starting to grow on her. She drifted off with a smile on her face.
Y/n woke up to an empty house and looked over to the grandfather clock in the corner. She had been asleep for 3 hours and it seemed that Gilbert had left.
She had felt better than she did all day and was hoping that this was a sign her cold passed. She stood up and felt her stomach rumble. She walked over to the kitchen and opened the fridge.
She saw a bowl with an aluminum cover and a note attached to it. She took it out of the fridge and set it on the counter.
She picked up the note and unfolded it, then began to read:
Dear Y/n,
I made you an extra soup just in case you woke up feeling hungry. Since I had to leave to take care of some things. I checked your temperature and noticed the fever had went down so I hope you are starting to feel better.
Hopefully, this soup will be as good as the last since I noticed you liked it so much.
When you asked me before why I did this for you, it's mostly because I care about you.
When I saw you not feeling well, I knew I had to step in and make sure you were alright.
I'm sorry if I was in any way annoying. I was just trying to help you.
Yours truly, Gilbert Blythe
Y/n smiled at the lovely letter and folded it back up. She placed it into her pocket and then began to heat up the soup. As she waited, she thought over what he had said.
"Because I care about you", rang in her head over and over again. It brought a slight blush to her cheeks to whatever he could mean. Did he mean it in a friend way or in a romantic way? The second possibility really made her heart swoon.
She sat down at her kitchen table eating the soup and felt her heart hammer in her chest from just knowing that he had put so much effort into making it. This was the day that she had started to feel something different for Gilbert Blythe and she didn't want it to change.
