The Paruparo Family
There was a big house that was placed near the streets. It has a red roof with unpainted cemented walls and many windows. The house was also surrounded by fences made of hollow blocks, and a wooden gate with metal locks. Outside of the house was so peaceful and quiet, but inside...
A sound of glass breaking came from inside the house.
Inside the house, it was peaceful and serene...for the moment, as it looked beautiful. The first thing that could easily be seen was the massive living room, with beautiful white walls, and a shiny brown wooden floor. In the middle, there was a small, low table with a purple vase on it. In front of the table was a little gray TV, with wires connected behind it, and metal antennas on top. The TV was off at the moment, but something soon would come along and turn it on to put on a show of great interest to watch. Across the tv and the small table was a long tan couch big enough to hold 7 family members. Next to the couch to its right was an archway that was big enough so everyone, no matter how tall or short they were, could reach the stairs at the other side of the living room wall, and easily climb up the steps to reach the bedroom upstairs. Between the living room and the kitchen was supposed to be the dining room area, though it was only a small space. There was a large and long wooden dining table, with about 12 wooden chairs to match, a lovely tan tablecloth, and in the middle, resting in a glass case, a bunch of red, lovely flowers. Right beside the dining table was a large wooden trophy case, where inside, seeable through the clear glass windows, were dozens of different medals, trophies, and other awards that shined under the light of each awardee..., except one that was empty. Next to the trophy case were 4 rifle guns that were used in the army during World War II. Across the dining table and at the left side of the couch was a little drawer that had black handles, and a bunch of picture frames of the Paruparo family. And on top of the living room, hanging from the ceiling, was a shiny white chandelier with lights bright enough to light up the whole front of the home if they ever needed extra light. In the middle of both the living room and what looked like a kitchen was a large and long divider made out of bamboo and nipa that separated both rooms, but still enabled easy access to enter and exit both rooms as well. Finally, on the other side of the divider was the kitchen, and already something very delicious could be smelled without needing to enter it. The kitchen also had matching white walls, and cemented green floor that looked really neat. The wooden counters all looked very sturdy, like nothing could break them, as the scent of food being prepared on them luminated for a while. There was also a large metallic silver stove with sturdy black turn-able handles to turn on each section of the stove, and below it was connected with a liquefied petroleum gas tank. Next to the stove was the sink, where the people cooking could clean their dishes and hands. And finally, next to the counter to the right was the family refrigerator, and the one at the left was the dish rack where they place their clean plates and glasses.
This peaceful beautiful house wasn't exactly peaceful as it was described since one of the vases fell, and broke into pieces.
A 19-year-old female Filipino with short, slightly-curled hair stood up, revealing her clothes to have a green blouse with a red butterfly mark on the center and blue-plaid skirt, and shouted at her older brother, "Give me back my diary, Kuya Boyet!"
A 20-year-old male Filipino with short greaser hair, wearing a black buttoned shirt with a white butterfly mark on the left, and blue pants, grabbed a blue notebook that was presumably to be his sister's diary, "You have to get it, Imelda!"
"That's it! You're gonna pay!" Imelda yelled.
"You gotta catch me first!" Boyet laughed, but his sister charged into him, wanting to retrieve her diary, causing the two to fight.
Another male Filipino, 16 years old, who has bob cut hair, wearing glasses, white buttoned lab coat with a black butterfly at the right, and orange pants, was sitting down against a wall, surrounded by many science, math, and history books. While he was reading one of his history books, this boy's name was shown on the front cover, and revealed to be Jayjay, "Ooh, the hand-to-hand combat sport, also known as wrestling, was invented 15 000 years ago! Interesting. I should've known math is the oldest sport. How would I know? Math is not a sport!"
Another female Filipino, 15 years old, who has a ponytail with a yellow butterfly on her hair tie, orange plaid blouse, and yellow plaid skirt, was looking at herself in the mirror, talking to herself angrily. She was actually practicing acting as she dreamed of being an actress. Her name was shown at the left part of her mirror, and revealed to be Tala, "'Mahina ka naman! You can't carry a wagon'" She then acted a different character, "'Uh, ako? You're the one who's been lying down under a tree all day!' Man, I sound good!"
While sitting on the stairs, a young 11-year-old Filipino girl with long hair with bangs that cover her eyes, pink blouse, and black skirt that has a purple butterfly at the right side was reading a poem on a paper.
As the dawn of day shines above the sky
One is left to ask the question: why?
For what our mask shows is merely untrue
For to succeed, you wear only one disguise: the true you.
She then stepped down to another step, and bowed like she had an audience, "And that is why you have to be yourself to become a queen. Thank you, thank you! Maraming salamat for listening to the great Ligaya Paruparo!" Ligaya blew sweet kisses in the air.
Another spot of the room near the TV has a small military camp covered with pillows, a small 8-year-old boy with a cowlick hair, wearing a gray headband with blue butterfly mark on it, purple T-shirt, and dark blue shorts, holding out a wooden fake gun while hiding behind the pillow fences. He was then startled by his brother who looked identical to him, "Hey, I told you, no basketball in my territory, Renaldo!"
The boy's twin brother looked exactly like him, except he wore a grey cap with a green butterfly mark on it, an orange T-shirt, and white shorts. He was bouncing a basketball with his hand, "But my territory area is the same as yours, Rizalino. Our space is too small for us, especially for my basketball. Can you just make your territory smaller so I can play freely?!"
"Ugh, that's it! You're dead to me!" Rizalino yelled as he pointed his fake gun on his brother, "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Renaldo escaped, pretending to have dodged some imaginary bullets, "Ha, ha! Miss me!"
The kitchen was close to the living room where the children were playing as the parents were cooking dinner.
"Andres, Are you sure that's enough for 12 people?" the woman in her early 40s with short curly hair, wearing a pale pink apron, white blouse with an orange butterfly at the left side, and a gray skirt, asked her husband while stirring a pot.
"Ha! This fits for 20 more, Isabel!" The man in his late 40s with bald-spotted hair, wearing a green military uniform with a gray butterfly below the "army" tag, and a military cap with a gray butterfly mark on it, chuckled with his wife while helping her cook food.
Behind them was the youngest of the children. A young 5-year-old girl with pigtails, wearing a blue blouse with indigo butterflies all over and a giant pink heart with a cursive word of her name "Divina", and purple plaid skirt with small butterflies at the bottom, sat on her own kiddie table set with fake kitchen appliances. She had a brown teddy bear sitting on another kiddie chair, "You heard him, Rebecca," Divina told her teddy bear while pretending to cook real food with her toy kitchen appliances. She then poured imaginary food on her bear's plate, "If this meal cooks for 20 people, that means we're gonna have leftovers."
At the corner, a 12-year-old girl was sitting while writing something on a paper while using another book as her table. She has long curly brown hair with bangs that covered half of her left eye, and wore a yellow and black-striped blouse with a brown butterfly at the lower left, a yellow hat with a butterfly mark on top and a squeak bee toy on it, and brown plaid skirt. "Ugh! Sometimes, you can't get inspiration from your own home, but I'm close to finishing this anyway," she rolled her eyes while trying to ignore her cousins' noises.
At the living room door, Mariposa opened it with Luca, Alberto, and Giulia in tow.
"All right. Just let me do that talking, and act casual. My pamilya doesn't do well with fear," She told them before rushing through the living room, and made it to the kitchen where her parents are, "Mano po, Nanay, Tatay!" As part of showing respect, she placed her parents' hands on her forehead one by one.
When the trio walked into the living room and avoided scattering objects on the floor, Luca noticed a bunch of rifles settling at the corner next to the trophy display case as he jumped backwards with Alberto and Giulia took notice of them.
Seeing that one of her older sisters finally came home, Divina gasped and exclaimed, "Ate Mariposa's home!"
The other children happily gasped to see their middle sister come back home after a whole day of practice outside.
"I brought some friends for dinner. Is there enough for three more?" Mariposa announced.
This news caught everyone's attention as the parents, all 8 siblings, and one cousin halted from their activities, and stared at their new visitors with Ligaya lifting her bangs to see clearly.
Luca softly whimpered in fear while Alberto and Giulia were surprised to see many people in one room.
"What's wrong with you, stu..." Alberto was about to greet them with the same phrase he used back in Portorosso with Luca, but both Luca and Giulia quickly covered his mouth, remembering that Alberto still didn't understand what that phrase meant.
Andres and Isabel glanced at each other before lightly nodding.
"Sure. Just offer them three extra chairs," Isabel told Mariposa before turning to the other children, "Mga bata, help us with dinner, please."
The 9 remaining kids dropped down their things, and came to help the 2 parents. Mariposa then turned to her new friends, and nodded at them while bringing out three chairs at the dining table.
While the whole family were preparing for dinner, the trio just sat comfortably while staring at the guns besides the trophy display case.
"What do you think he kills with those?" Alberto asked quietly.
"Anything that can scare and hurt my family," Andres heard the tall boy's question as he handed over three pictures to her daughter, "Nakita mo na ang diyaryo today?"
"Ugh, there's no such thing, Tatay," Mariposa groaned while pouring a pitcher of water on three glasses, and turned to her cousin, "Cousin Elizabeth, can you give them these?"
"Opo, pinsan," She took three glasses, and placed them in front of the three guests, "Sorry about us. Everyone here in the Philippines believes in mythical monsters," she showed three pictured to them
"Or pretend to believe them," Mariposa muttered.
Luca, Alberto, and Giulia looked at the pictures to see a horrifying face of a monster calls Aswang, another monster with bat wings and a missing lower torso called Mananaggal, and a third monster that looked like a baby, but has monstrous looks called Tiyanak.
Luca yelped in shock.
"Oh, so those are what monsters look like here," Giulia said.
"Well, I'm not pretending because they are real!" Andres took the pictures from Alberto.
"Ugh, awful evil creatures!" Isabel added while pinning the three pictures on the wall with one of her knives. Even Rizalino shot an arrow onto them with a bow.
There were other horrifying pictures of monsters that were believed to exist in the Philippines. Some of them were pinned by sharp stakes and scissors that might belong to any of the children.
Luca spat water on Alberto's face revealing partially his sea monster form, and causing Luca and Giulia to gasp as they both pushed Alberto down under the table while Mariposa and her family turned to see them what was going on, but they were unable to see them because of the divider blocked the dinner table.
Under the table, the three were encountered by two cats; one was gray with black stripes, and the other was a tuxedo cat. The two then growled at them with their narrow eyes. Ignoring the cats, Giulia took out a small towel, and wiped the water on Alberto's face.
The three then went back up, grinning nervously.
The whole Paruparo family stared confusingly at them
"Slipped," Luca stated as he put his glass back up.
The siblings and cousin shrugged as they went back to prepare food.
"Phew!" Luca, Alberto, and Giulia sighed in relief, until the two cats appeared in front of them from the other side of the table, narrowing their eyes and growling at them.
While trying to keep himself from getting eye contact with the cats, Luca turned to see the trophy display case. There are 12 rooms, which meant there was one for each with their names. The name for each room of the display case showed which awards belonged to which family member, but Luca noticed one of them was empty, and that was Mariposa's. Her display was empty.
"Dinner's ready!" Andres announced while placing a huge bowl of pork cube that were marinated with vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves, and black peppercorns, which is browned in oil, and simmered in the marinade "Ngayong gabi, we'll eat pork adobo."
"Yes, my favorite!" Tala yelled excitedly.
"Mine too!" Rizalino added.
The rest of the family sat down on their chairs.
"Kainan na!" Isabel declared as she scooped a serving spoon of pork adobo on her plate before passing to Andres.
Then, Andres passed the bowl to Boyet, to Imelda, to Jayjay, to Tala, and to Mariposa, who offered Luca, Alberto, and Giulia the same amount of their plates. She then passed the bowl to Ligaya, then to Rizalino, then to Renaldo, to Divina, and finally, to Elizabeth before she put the bowl back in the middle of the table.
The whole family started to eat, as so was Giulia, but Luca and Alberto were confused by the look of the food. They were too nervous to start eating the dish they haven't tasted yet. Giulia knew how to use both spoon and fork, but the two boys knew how to use a fork for eating pasta, but no with other dishes.
Luca held both spoon and fork, and stared at them before turning to Andres and Isabel and chuckled nervously.
While they were eating their food, the couple were also watching their new visitors if they enjoyed the food. They understood that Giulia was enjoying the new dish she ate, but they were still waiting for the two boys.
Luca gulped. Since Luca was still too nervous to taste the new dish, Alberto volunteered by taking a pork cube by hand.
Jayjay, Tala, and Ligaya were jolted a bit while having their spoons close to their mouths while glancing at each other.
Alberto threw a pork cube into his mouth to taste it. He was surprised how good it was as he continued eating with his mouth. He didn't care to have his hands dirty. Luca saw how his best friend was enjoying this new dish as he took a small pork cube, and tasted it.
"Uh..." Mariposa was puzzled why her two new friends were eating with their hands.
Filipinos used their hands while they ate too, only because some families couldn't afford to have utensils, but since the Paruparo have utensils, they don't need to eat with their hands.
Luca was also fascinated by the taste of the food too as he ate with his hands too.
Mariposa stared at Giulia as a gesture if Luca and Alberto were alright.
Giulia saw how suspicious Mariposa was, she came up with an excuse to cover for them, "Heh, heh, boys. Am I right?"
"Okay, then," Mariposa nodded as she was buying it before continuing eating while Boyet and Imelda were suspicious while chewing their food.
"Where did you three come from?" Andres asked.
Luca and Alberto looked up to Andres with their empty plates while Giulia did the same with a spoon in her mouth, finishing the last slice of pork.
"They're, uh, tourists. From Italy," Mariposa answered for them, "Luca, Alberto, and Giulia."
"And what brings you here to Manila?" Isabel questioned nicely.
"Oh. Uh... funny you should ask. They're just here for their winter break. You know, vacation. But they're also going to help me with the singing competition," the middle child explained.
"The singing competition?" Andres and Isabel repeated while turning to their daughter.
"Yeah. Uh, you know what? Don't worry about it."
"'Don't worry about it'?" Andres scoffed.
"Opo. Don't worry about it," Mariposa finished her food as she quickly gathered her, Luca, Alberto, and Giulia's plates, and ran towards the sink.
Isabel sighed as she called her, "Mariposa. We need to talk about... that."
Mariposa stopped on her tracks, and hung her head down, knowing what her parents would talk about with her.
Later, after dinner, Mariposa and her parents sat down on the couch.
"Your Tatay and I were talking this morning, and we decided not to let you join the singing competition again. You still can't get over your stage fright," Isabel informed while touching her daughter's hand.
"Nanay, Tatay, sige na, I have a band now," Mariposa pleaded.
"There's also the entry fee. We don't have enough for 4 children!" Andres exclaimed worryingly.
"I'll work hard at the palengke. Whatever you need," The middle child said.
"Opo, and Jayjay, Boyet, and I will hand over the orders our clients asked," Imelda added with her brothers nodded.
"We can't sell empty handed. What I need is more fish, and your mother needs more farm products," their father reminded Mariposa, hanging her head down sadly.
"Pasensya na, Mariposa," Their mother patted Mariposa's back.
"Um, excuse me?" Luca interrupted the family meeting while raising his finger, "We could help."
"You know how to fish?" The veteran clarified.
"And you know how to farm?" The housewife questioned.
"Oh, we? We live near the sea. We know lots of fish," Alberto smirked.
"We do farm sometimes," Giulia admitted as she remembered there was vegetation up on Mt. Portorosso.
Seeing her parents might have doubts, Mariposa unleashed her begging kitty-cat eyes. "Pleeeeaaaaassseee!"
Both Andres and Isabel sighed loudly as they couldn't resist Mariposa's pleading.
"You want to work for the entry fee? Fine, we'll put you three to work tomorrow," Andres announced.
"Really?" Luca formed a smile as he, Alberto, Giulia, and Mariposa chuckled in excitement.
"Oh, maraming salamat, Nanay, Tatay!" Mariposa squealed as she threw her arms around her parents, and her siblings and cousin applauded.
The trio's excitement got interrupted when two cats from earlier crawled closer towards Luca and Alberto with their growling angry eyes glaring at them.
"Twist! Daru! Don't you! No!" Mariposa demanded, but the striped one attacked Alberto, while the tuxedo launched at Luca, "Twist! Daru!
Later, Luca and Alberto got claw scratches all over their faces, and walked out of the door with Giulia behind them for comfort, and Mariposa followed them.
"I'm so sorry about the cats. They are more of lovers, not fighters," Mariposa apologized to them.
"It's fine. We've been dealing with cats before," Luca said, "Well, we better head home."
"Oh, so you know where you're going? We can give you a ride," The Filipino girl said while tilting her head, pointing a red jeepney at the garage at the left side of the house.
"No thanks. We'll walk home. I think I got a map, right here," Giulia pulled out a scroll of a map from her pocket.
"Hey, what is that?" Luca couldn't help but notice a giant yellow glowing star hanging on the branch of a year.
Mariposa turned around, and noticed the star Luca was pointing at, "Oh, you mean, a parol?"
"A what?" Alberto inquired.
"A parol! An ornamental lantern decoration for Christmas that Filipinos love to make and hang in the holidays," Mariposa explained as she climbed up the tree, and got a yellow parol.
"That's the closest star I've ever seen," Luca cooed while reaching his hand on the lantern.
Seeing how Luca was already obsessed with the parol, Mariposa smiled, and handed the parol to him, "You know, you guys can have it if you want it."
"Really?" Luca gasped as he grabbed the star that was almost the same size as his body, "Thank you."
"No problem. You guys be safe home. Magandang gabi," Mariposa smiled before walking back inside the house, and closed the door.
The three then turned to walk back to the streets to find their way to their apartment.
"That was close," Luca sighed in relief while holding the parol.
"I know. That family is so big! Mariposa has lots of siblings. It's like a whole army," Alberto commented.
"Yeah, a lot. I'm not sure I can handle that many," Giulia chuckled while elbowing Alberto's right arm.
"I thought we were gonna die, like, a hundred times again," the young boy almost hyperventilated.
Alberto then said, calming his best friend down, "Hey, relax. We got this. We just have to lay low, just like what we did when we came to town for the first time."
"Yeah. You two fooled us back then," Giulia laughed, remembering the times she had with the two boys before she found out they were sea monsters.
But Luca still remembered how many people lived in Mariposa's house. As an only child to his parents, Luca didn't know much about siblings, "Wow, what would it be like if... we grew up in a big family?"
"Chaotic!" Alberto answered immediately, "That's what I want to describe. But I don't think I wanted to have a big family like that," He then grabbed Luca and Giulia closer with his arms, "Besides, I got the siblings I needed right here."
Luca and Giulia laughed appreciatively that Alberto treated them as his own siblings, and they treated him as their own older brother too.
While the trio walked down the sidewalk, Mariposa's siblings and cousin were watching them from the windows on the 2nd floor.
"What do you think of them?" Jayjay asked his siblings.
"They are innocent, but I don't think I can trust them," Boyet said.
"Boyet, don't be racist," Imelda elbowed her brother.
"It's not because they are from Italy, I'm just not sure if they are good for Mariposa, especially of her condition," the oldest clarified.
"I think I despise that Alberto guy. To me, I think he's an orphan. I can see the look on his face that he's rebellious and a loner before he had these two," the smart sibling described.
"Yeah, I don't think he's a perfect friend to Mariposa," Boyet agreed, but then, he thought something terrible that Alberto might not be just a friend to his little sister, "What if... What if... what if he's...?!"
Imelda knew what her brother meant as she slapped him across his face to snap him out of it, "Boyet, Hindi! I don't think Mariposa would 'like' Alberto. They just met!"
"You're right, you're right. I was overreacting," Boyet nodded in agreement as he shook his head, "But I'll keep an eye on him."
"Ha! You don't like Alberto much? I don't like that guy," Ligaya pointed at Luca, "With his big eyes and innocent smile. What would he want to do, huh? Wanting to know more about Mariposa?! Ha! I don't think so! I won't allow it!"
"Yeah, Luca appeared to be innocent, but we can't let that fool us!" Tala agreed while crossing her arms.
"I don't know. I think Luca is cute, and he is innocent," Divina thought before glaring and pointing her finger at Giulia, "I don't like that girl. Urgh! She thinks she's really nice, and thought everything was normal between the two with her nervous smile."
"I think she's as curious as Luca to know Mariposa's secret," Renaldo stated.
"Or worse, if they found out about Mariposa, they would hurt her!" Elizabeth theorized.
All of the siblings and cousin gasped in horror before glaring at the happily walking Luca, Alberto, and Giulia until they were out of sight.
"Oh, that's not gonna happen!" Rizalino growled angrily.
"We need to keep an eye on those three, and make sure that Mariposa is safe!" Boyet suggested as the rest nodded before slowly backing away from the window, and Imelda and Tala closed it tight.

Back at the apartment, while Massimo was cooking dinner, and Daniela and Lorenzo were placing the plates on the table, Luca, Alberto, and Giulia made it back to the apartment safely, and entered from the door before Giulia closed it behind them.
"There you kids are! What took you so long?!" Daniela exclaimed in relief.
"We've been awfully worried!" Lorenzo said.
"Sorry, Mom, Dad. We got a little sidetracked this afternoon, but..." Luca wanted to explain with a complete story, but Alberto interrupted him.
"But we met a new friend!" He said.
"A new friend?" Grandma Paguro repeated while taking a bite on a small piece of bread.
Alberto nodded, "Yeah, her name is Mariposa, and wow! She's cool with music. And she has a big family. Lots of siblings, and I think the other one is a cousin? I'm not sure."
"Mariposa welcomed us to her home, we even ate dinner there," Giulia continued the story
"Oh, so you don't want my Trenette al pesto then," Massimo acted like he was sad that the three children were full to eat the dinner he just cooked.
"Papà! We can still eat your dinner," The red-haired girl chuckled as she stood by her father's side to help him with the dinner, "But if you try pork adobo, it was so delicious and meaty."
"Well, I have more room for pasta anyway," Alberto said, until he felt there was bay leaf left on his tongue from the pork adobo he ate earlier. He threw away the bay leaf, and assisted to help his adoptive sister as well.
Luca then looked down at his parol, and he admired that it was shaped like a star.
Grandma Paguro noticed her grandson, as she asked him, "And what have you got there, bubble?"
Luca looked up, almost startling, and answered, "Oh, this? This is a parol. It's a star-shaped lantern that humans here hang as a Christmas decoration. We should hang it somewhere."
"Hmm," Daniela looked around to find a good place to hang an object that her son admired, "Oh, how about here?" She pointed a space at the upper part of the window. Daniela took the parol from Luca, and was able to reach the nail on top of the window, and hang the parol there.
Luca gasped as his eyes sparkled in delight, "It's perfect!" He hugged his mother before joining the rest for dinner.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally! I posted one of my favorite chapters. Meet Mariposa's family, the Paruparo family! This big family was based on the Loud Family from The Loud House, and the Diaz Family from Stuck In The Middle. The last name "Paruparo" means "butterfly" in Filipino.
The food, Philippine pork adobo, is a popular Filipino dish and cooking process in Philippine cuisine that involves meat, seafood, or vegetables marinated in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves, and black peppercorns, which is browned in oil, and simmered in the marinade. It has occasionally been considered the unofficial national dish in the Philippines.
Three of the popular monsters in the Philippine mythology were revealed in this chapter, but it will be further known in the next few chapters.
A parol is a Filipino ornamental lantern displayed during the Christmas season. The word paról is the modern Filipino spelling of the original Spanish name farol, meaning "lantern". In the native languages, parol and lanterns in general are also known as paritaan. The tradition of the parol dates back to the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. It is a local adaptation of the Hispanic tradition of carrying small light sources (like torches, candles, or braziers) during the nine-day Christmas Novena procession leading up to the midnight mass (called Simbang Gabi in the Philippines). The parol is reserved only for the Christmas Novena procession, in other types of Novena processions in the Philippines, lit candles are carried by participants instead.
Though Mariposa's age was confirmed in chapter 3, she has the same age as her cousin, Elizabeth, so Mariposa appeared to be 12 years old, and the middle child of the 9 children.
