Chapter Two: Pop Quiz
Jungkook lived for night classes. He loved the way Seoul University's campus lit up in golden light and how the January snow covering the ground contrasted the black sky above it.
He loved winter even more - each breath of crisp air felt like a drink of iced cold water. A particular crystallizing leaf caught his eye as they walked. It was dark brown, folding in on itself, but somehow despite the snow and the frost, it held onto a bare branch. Jungkook watched it sway, caught in the wind.
"Come on, we're gonna be late you idiot." Taehyung said next to him, grabbing Jungkook by the collar of his coat and starting to jog up the steps to Seoul University's main lecture hall. "You gotta stop spacing out when we're already running late."
Jungkook laughed, jumping his backpack as they made their way inside. "I'd rather we never make it in the first place. Intro to Music Theory is the freshman weed out class."
"I know, the lecture was brutal yesterday." Taehyung said, rubbing his hands together for warmth as they entered the old building. Inside was a golden lit hall with two spiraling staircases on the sides. Taehyung headed right, taking the path to the smaller classrooms located on the second floor where their six pm discussion section was located for the course.
"God, it's so eerie in here." Jungkook said as each of their steps echoed on the marble flooring.
"Boo." Taehyung said with a sudden stop. Jungkook jumped then immediately hit his friend on the shoulder.
"Not funny."
"I thought it was hilarious,"
Jungkook gave Taehyung a look as they reached the right door. Somehow, they made it with five minutes to spare. Even luckier, the Teacher Assistant leading the discussion section seemed to be running late themselves. The two boys walked into the twenty person lecture room to find students in hoodies and pajamas scattered around the seats with no one at the front desk.
"Come on." Taehyung said, nudging Jungkook to two empty seats near the back. Jungkook felt a rush of warmth finally enter his body as he sat down, the winter cold leaving his system as he took out a notebook and his laptop.
"There's a quiz already next week." Taehyung said, biting on his pencil as he stared at the empty desk. "How is that fair? The semester only just started."
"What?" Jungkook replied, "is that even possible? We haven't gone over anything yet." Jungkook scoffed, surprised to find Taehyung wasn't lying. There was a quiz scheduled for the next week on the syllabus for the class. "Guess the prof wanted to get creative in how he tortures students."
"Well we have bigger problems than just the quiz." Taehyung said while leaning back in his chair. He waited till Jungkook turned his way, getting his friends full attention, then waited an extra moment for some dramatic flare. Jungkook lifted his hand up like he would slap Taehyung which caused the boy to swat his hand away. "Jin's coming up next weekend too."
"What?" Jungkook said, blinking. "Is Namjoon coming with?"
"I think so." Taehyung said, resting his forearms on the desk in front of him. There was a click at the door and Jungkook watched his friend lose his train of thought entirely as their TA walked in. Taehyung's jaw dropped, glancing from the TA back to Jungkook like he was seeing a ghost.
"No fucking way." He said in a hushed voice, nudging Jungkook. "Isn't that the guy from Halloween?"
"What?" Jungkook said, scrunching his brows as he turned his attention to the front of the room. Words got stuck in Jungkook's throat as he watched a clearly strong, but slim, figure with dark reddish hair, pale skin, and lips red like a bleeding sun, set a bookbag on the desk at the front of the room. Parallel images flashed in Jungkook's head of the same body in tight pants and a cropped shirt verses the white button up shirt and green flowy pants the graduate student wore.
"I-" Jungkook started, shaking his head. As if hearing him, the TA flicked his gaze up at Jungkook and locked on him for the smallest fracture of a second before breaking contact to address the rest of the room.
"Hey everyone, I'm glad it looks like everyone's here. I know late classes can be tough to make, but this class will be a thousand times more difficult with each discussion section you miss. My office hours are every Tuesday and Thursday at seven pm, so come stop by if you ever need any help. Lastly, you can call me Jimin. I'm a grad student here so there's no need to call me anything else."
The TA - Jimin - threw one more look Jungkook's way. Jungkook felt something electric run down his back. It'd been months since October, but Jungkook hadn't forgotten the way the boy's hands felt on his body. In that moment, it felt as if Jimin's fingers brushed down his spine.
"Let's get started." Jimin said, turning to grab some chalk and drawing a scale on the white board. He didn't look at Jungkook again for the rest of the discussion section.

"Alright guys, that's all I have for today. Next Friday you'll be taking your first quiz during the discussion section so please make sure to prepare for it. This course is cumulative so you don't fall behind. I'll see you all next week." Park Jimin said, wiping the music theory notes off of the white board. Taehyung sucked air through his teeth, his mind already trying to predict what classical sample they'd have to score by ear next week as all the students started to tiredly file out of the room.
"Tae hold on, I'm gonna go talk to the TA real quick before we leave."
Taehyung lifted his brows but nodded, leaning against the back wall as Jungkook ran up to the front desk.
Jimin was putting his laptop into a bookbag, packing up, when he noticed Jungkook standing in front of him. Jimin's dark eyes flicked over to Taehyung who was still in the room before looking back at Jungkook. Jimin reached for his tan coat, shrugging it on over his shoulders as he addressed Jungkook.
"What's your name? What can I help with?"
Jungkook felt something drop in his chest. He took a step forward, mind racing with what to do. Does he seriously not recognize me? Am I mistaking this guy for the Halloween vampire?
"Um," Jungkook started, "I'm Jeon Jungkook. It's nice to meet you."
Jimin raised his brows, smiling warmly. He looked so small and soft then. "I don't usually have students kiss ass this early in the semester, but it's nice to meet you."
Jungkook blushed and Taehyung coughed in the back of the room. "No I - I just wanted to talk to you. That's all."
"Oh?" Jimin said, his voice teasing. He looked over to the door then and Jungkook followed his gaze to find a pale shorter man leaning against the frame. His hair was thick and black, pulled half up in a bun while the rest curled near the nape of his neck. Jimin gave the man a nod, slinging his book bag over his shoulder.
"Come to my office hours on Tuesday if you need anything Jungkook. I'm sorry, but I have to run."
Jungkook could only nod, dumbfounded. He searched the lines of Jimin's face for any hint of recognition of the fire he'd seen in the boy's eyes on Halloween. But he only found polite kindness instead as Jimin gave a small dip of the chin and walked over to the pale man at the door. The stranger gave Jungkook a confused look before placing his arm on Jimin's lower back, leading him out of the room.

Jungkook took a deep breath before knocking on the door of the discussion section room Jimin was holding his office hours at. The weekend flew by, Taehyung frantically preparing for Seokjin's return to Seoul and Jungkook trying to catch up on the homework piled up from all his classes. It was finally Tuesday, which meant that Jungkook could scratch the itch in the back of his head all weekend - that low hum of Park Jimin.
He couldn't really describe where the fascination came from with the guy, but he was smart enough to understand that whatever happened on Halloween had planted the seed of a crush. He couldn't get it out of his head why Jimin pretended not to recognize him either - was it that the boy seriously didn't remember him? It was just one party, one bar night, but Jungkook felt something that night flood his system that he'd never managed to get out of his head entirely. Was it really that one sided?
God, why did he have to be my TA? Couldn't he have been a regular student? It'd make things so much easier.
"The door's open, you can come in." Jungkook heard a sweet, soft voice say. He pushed open the door to find Park Jimin sitting in a thick pink sweater that was loose around his shoulders, typing away at his laptop.
Jimin looked up, smiling when he noticed Jungkook. "Ah, the kiss ass," he said innocently.
Jungkook closed the door behind him and suddenly the large room felt very small. The night sky caused the windows to look black, the only light coming from the golden overhead lights at the center of the room. Jimin glanced at the door and then stood up, motioning for Jungkook to sit down across from his desk.
Jungkook took a small breath, slugging his backpack off and placing it next to the chair as he sat down.
Jimin smiled, his hair a cute mess. Jungkook shook his head. "I uh - I'm worried about the quiz. I've never written a score after listening to a portion of music only twice. I'm nervous about it." He said, but the words felt like oil on his tongue from the blatant lie. He came here to quiz Jimin, to interrogate him. But sitting across from the boy, his lilac cologne heavy in the air, the confidence to do so slipped away.
What if I really am wrong?
Jimin smiled, heading for the door and locking it before walking back to Jungkook. He leaned against the desk to Jungkook's side, his foot touching the base of Jungkook's chair.
Jungkook swallowed, looking up at Jimin from such an angle caused him to blush.
"The first quiz is the hardest because the format is new." Jimin explained, his eyes locked on Jungkook's. Something flashed in them, then. There it is, that fire, Jungkook thought. "The professor likes to quiz you guys early so you get a sense of the course difficulty at the start in case a student wants to drop the class."
"You do remember." Jungkook said then, ignoring Jimin's words and focusing entirely on watching the playful flame continue to flicker in Jimin's dark eyes.
Jimin raised a brow, tilting his head at Jungkook like a cat would.
"Remember what?" Jimin said, "Is there something I'm missing here, Jungkook?"
Jungkook felt a chill run down his spine at the way Jimin said his name. It was smooth and drawn out, his voice so sweet it almost sounded like Jimin had sung it.
Jimin reached for Jungkook's face then, tucking his thick hair behind his ear, before retreating it back to his side. Jungkook froze, soaking in the movement.
"Do you want to practice?" Jimin asked and Jungkook coughed, his ears turning red. Jimin was so close to him now, his body leaning against the desk only inches away from Jungkook's seat. "I have a sample from last year's quiz I can play for you."
"I -" Jungkook started and then his words got caught in his throat. God, was the room this small last week? Jimin stopped, looking at Jungkook. His gaze trailed Jungkook's features, starting at his thick curls of black hair, to the arch of his nose, to his bunny teeth, to the line of his jaw. The lights flickered above them and Jimin's face was cast in shadow for a second. Something in Jimin's gaze darkened and then he smiled.
"Why are you actually here, Jungkook?" Jimin asked, pushing Jungkook's chair away using his foot. "Because it doesn't seem like you're that focused on learning the class content."
Jungkook's chest hurt as he took in a breath, slowly releasing it.
Jimin took that as answer enough.
"Get on your knees." Jimin said sweetly, a small smirk on his lips. Jungkook froze, everything in his system stopped working for a moment. The lights flickered above them again and the frost outside the windows could melt from the heat in Jungkook's cheeks.
"What?" He choked out, and Jimin stepped in between Jungkook and the desk.
Jimin looked at Jungkook's lips like he was analyzing a piece of art. His movements were so fluid, graceful like a dancer's. "Get on your knees, Jungkook. I'm not going to ask you again."
"You remember." Jungkook repeated, unable to keep the giddiness from his tone. Jimin only smiled, leaning against the desk so that his sweater rose up and revealed abs underneath it.
Jimin tapped his fingers on the desk and Jungkook blinked, hearing Taehyung's voice chastising him for spacing out. Slowly, keeping eye contact with Jimin the entire way, he made it down from his chair to the ground, now kneeling in front of the beautiful boy.
Jimin smiled, his hands going into Jungkook's hair and testing Jungkook for his reactions. Jungkook's breathing got jagged with each small push and pull, looking up at Jimin from the angle caused something to flip in his chest he didn't know existed. It felt dirty, putting himself below Jimin in such a vulnerable way, but it also caused his head to rush at the same time. He would let Jimin get away with anything, he realized in that moment.
"Hm," Jimin hummed, his delicate hand moving to Jungkook's lips and pressing against them. Jungkook opened his mouth as Jimin pushed a finger in, watching Jungkook the entire time.
Jungkook's mind was racing, his body buzzing in ways he'd never experienced before, as he closed his mouth around Jimin's finger and began to suck it. He must have done something right because Jimin gave a small, approving laugh. The sound like honey hitting Jungkook's ears.
"I don't know you, Jungkook." Jimin said finally, pulling his hand away. He tilted his head again, furrowing his brows. "All I know is that we met before and now you're my student. The dynamic has changed."
Jungkook shook his head, "I know but-"
At that moment there was a knock at the door which caused Jungkook to jump while Jimin stayed supernaturally calm at the sound. He looked down at Jungkook still on his knees and grinned in his eyes before walking to the door and opening it.
Jungkook scrambled to his feet, jumping into his chair faster than was humanly possible, as Kim Taheyung sauntered into the room. When he noticed Jungkook, Taehyung beamed like an idiot.
"Hey! Taehyung waved. "You're here for extra help too? No way, you should have told me. We could have walked over together."
Jungkook thought he would strangle his friend.
"You came just in time," Jimin said, not even a blush to his cheeks as he sat down in his desk chair. "We were just about to go through a practice example."
