19 - Decorating Lane's Office

He examined the walls as they were and decided all he need do was add appropriate heavy, masculine furnishings (...and all the modern perks required to do anything nowadays: computers, screens, printers and the like...) He set the minions to cleaning and restoring anything that had suffered damage over the years. Most of it was remarkably well-preserved because of the enclosed space in which they had resided. The minions also wired the place with enough circuitry and bandwidth to service NASA.

On Ayla's advice, Lane decided to add a dark-wood chair rail with dark paneling under it to circle the whole room. The two had already found a huge old desk of distressed dark wood in the storage cache. They were at a loss as to how to get it out of there. While they were researching ways to do it, Airen and his minions retrieved it and had it set up where Lane had wanted it to be.

The industrious little fellows had also uncovered a large table of the same wood as the desk, originally designed for map-reading, for which they were cutting and mounting a sectioned glass top. Some documents could be laid under the glass and larger docs could be spread out on the whole table. Their most exciting find was the chair that matched the desk. It was huge and ungainly, but they were converting it to a modern desk chair with ergonomic cushions; wheels; and controls to adjust the height, depth, and other comfort settings.

Unaware of the busy workings going on behind the scenes, Lane and Ayla went on their second shopping spree into Crestfield to acquire the latest and best hardware to complete Lane's office requirements. And, "No, they didn't need installation." That was already handled. And, "No, they wouldn't need software." They knew where they could get the best software. Airen was almost smug about his ability to provide it.

The salesman gave up on trying to pad his commission, and still provided excellent, friendly service, especially when Ayla provided her ID for the charge card. Then Lane made a point of getting his name and card and left the sales guy feeling pretty good about his day.  When the pair returned from town, they found Lane's desk in place and a small batch of supplies already stored in its drawers.

Airen and the minions had also gotten together to lay plans for providing and stocking Lane's shelves with his books and curios and whatever else they thought a man of Lane's temperament would find appealing. Remembering one of Lane's comments, they incorporated the wine racks into the décor, and in addition to the old wines that were already there, they stocked them with vintages they knew Ayla and Lane liked, and a couple of rare and very fine wines that they had found on their own.

They had asked Ayla's help in adding things that she thought Lane would take a liking to. Hearing that he loved dance music, they added world class speakers in his office and made his dance studio a new "must." Airen himself was ordering posters and signed photos of Astaire, Travolta, Barishnikov, and as a sort of joke, Kevin Bacon. Airen felt that Lane would appreciate the humor.

Lane had queried the minions and Airen about any rugs that they may have found. He didn't want to carpet the room, since the original wood was so beautiful.  Lane was hoping to find rugs from about the same era as the wall coverings. He had almost given up on it and was looking online to buy something, when Seven came to him with a picture of a find he himself had discovered, not in the storage cache, but in the old attic, which was still in use. Lane told him that it was perfect and requested they restore and install it.

"Thank you, Seven. I appreciate you thinking about me. You little guys go way beyond all the time. Is there anything I can do to make things better for you guys, for you yourself?"

"Not that I can think of, sir. I like making you happy. We all do. Had you not been so good to Airen, we would not even exist." Lane's brows rose. "The example of your love for Miss Ayla prompted Airen to create Amilla, essentially our mother." Lane blushed. "You are our Grandfather, Master Lane."

"I am honored that you feel that way, Seven. If there is something I can do for you, don't hesitate to ask. If I can, you know that I will. Again, thank you." He lowered his head, his hair cascading into his face. Seven took that as a sign that he was dismissed. He didn't want to embarrass Lane, of all entities. The minions had learned a lot of Ayla's and Lane's mannerisms from Airen, as essential information for dealing with the couple. Ayla and Lane were the main concern for all of them.

When the office space for Master Lane was completed, it was nicknamed by the minions, the "throne room." Lane didn't know whether to be proud or to laugh at the other, more common, connotation. Ayla didn't make any equivocation, and just laughed out loud. Neither of them had the heart to tell the minions the idiom joke.

As his own project, Airen had been busy seeking the space for Lane's dance studio. He pored over old plans, explored closed spaces on his own, and opened rooms that had been recently used, but were no longer necessary for so few people as lived in the Towers in recent years. His diligence was rewarded. He found a long-unused ballroom that had been moth-balled because it was deemed too small for the Towers big parties. And... the access was too limited because of the turrets placement. It was located on the third floor at the opposite end of the main structure from the new gymnasium, and was easily reached from Lane's office in the basement. The turret landing and the door to the studio were literally next to each other.

For a few days while they were secretly preparing the space, the service was a few seconds slower than was usual, since nearly every minion and Amilla were occupied. No one noticed. A second may be a very long time for the 'bots, but their human counterparts never noticed or would have thought that ten seconds really mattered that much.

Once the studio was completed to Airen's satisfaction, (...Based on his extensive planning periods with Lane... and his own research based on what he knew of Lane's psyche...) he confided in Ayla and conspired with her to get Lane to the room without letting him know what was up. She told Lane that she had found a new un-opened hall, and "would you please come with me to explore it?"
