Chapter 13- My World

Rose-

"This is cozy," I commented as Bruce and I hopped into the cramped cockpit of the Bat plane.

"Well, it wasn't exactly built for two," Bruce huffed in response to my sarcasm.

I gave the inside a quick once over before replying. "Technically there's three," I reminded him with a smile as I held up and waged three of my own digits in his face.

"Or more."

My face scrunched up as I looked at him.

"And what's that supposed to mean?" I challenged after Bruce mumbled the last part under his breath.

There was a moments pause before he finally turned to me.

"He's a super alien, Rose," Bruce replied as he met my stare with seriousness. "You could have a whole litter in your belly."

"He's an alien, Bruce, not a dog."

Bruce grunted in response as he turned on the plane's equipment. We slowly began lifting off the ground and I grabbed on to the handle for dear life, hoping and praying that I didn't get sick.

"What do you think? Should we give Lex a call?" he asked, a large grin forming across his face as he spoke.

"Absolutely." I smirked back in response.

Alfred dialed the number for us and patched it in across the intercom.

"Hello?" Lex answered. "Break the bad news."

"I'd rather do the breaking in person," Bruce's raspy voice bounced around the plane's cabin.

"Oh, and don't worry," I added in my most chipper voice. "We already informed Gotham Morgue that your body will be arriving shortly."

The line went dead but I was almost positive I heard a snort of laughter from Clark in the background before Lex hung up. Bruce and I shared a look and a moment later we burst into a hilarious ruckus of our own. Suddenly I stopped laughing and my face went stiff.

"Rose, what's wrong?" Bruce shot me a worried glance at my sudden stillness.

"It's ok," I exhaled in relief. "For a second, I almost peed a little-"

"Oh my god, Rose!"

"I said, 'almost'," I reiterated in an exasperated tone. "But I am starving. Do you think we could swing through a McDonald's or something?"

"Yeah, sure," Bruce replied sarcastically. "I'll get right on that-"

"Bruce."

I placed a hand on his arm, immediately silencing him as he followed my gaze out the windshield. We were still a good ways from the city, but from where we hovered, it wasn't hard to make out the monstrous creature surrounded by a swarm of Apache helicopters.

"What the hell is that?" I breathed, but my question remained unanswered.

The military choppers unleashed a barrage of missiles and bullets, but nothing they shot at it seemed to work. In fact, it only seemed to make the creature more angry. Suddenly the mountainous blob stood to its feet, letting out a ferocious roar as a powerful red spark shot out of him threatening to level everything in it's path.

"Alfred, what's going on?"

"I- um--" There was a long pause before the old man finally answered Bruce. "I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, Sir."

Leaning forward, my eyes widened and my breathing grew heavy as I watched an unmistakable red and blue blur carry the creature upwards, past the clouds. I hadn't realized that my nails were dug into the leather until I uncurled my fingers from the dashboard to reach for my cell phone.

"Seriously?" Bruce frowned at me as I pulled the white droid from my back pocket.

I shrugged at him sheepishly before looking down at the screen.

Number Unknown...

"Hello?"

"They're gonna nuke him-" the voice spoke in a hushed tone. "They're going to nuke your boyfriend."

I looked down in confusion before placing the call on speaker phone.

"Secretary Swanwick?"

Bruce's head snapped in my direction but I was too focused on what was going on in the background to look up at him.

"Key is hot, Mr. President. Red Birds are armed to deploy."

"Fire at will."

"3. 2. 1. "

"God have mercy on us all-"

From beside me, Bruce suddenly inhaled sharply and I looked up just in time to see the bright white explosion.

"Oh my god," he breathed.

My free hand flew up to my mouth as a flood of tears suddenly cascaded down my cheeks. The other still held on to my phone and I could tell Bruce was listening to the chatter.

"Projectile 1 is about to make impact with Stryker's Island, just east of Metropolis. It's uninhabited."

"What about Projectile 2?" The Secretary's voice asked.

"No apparent re-entry."

"Projectile 2? What's Projectile 2?"

"Superman, Mr. President. Projectile 2 is Superman," The Secretary answered.

With my hand still covering my mouth, I attempted to stifle a sob as I squeezed my eyes shut and looked away. My thumb hovered over the end call button but Bruce suddenly grabbed my phone.

"Sir! It's moving. The shock waves are getting stronger and every time we hit it, we make it more powerful."

"We can't attack," the Secretary sighed in disbelief.

"Calvin," the voice of the President spoke up, "What're you saying?"

"I'm saying it's unkillable."

With a disgusted snarl, Bruce ended the call before tossing the phone into my lap. He angrily slammed his hands down on the steering wheel before bowing his head in what I can only assume was grief. My cheeks were still wet with tears when Bruce gently grabbed hold of my hand.

"It's up to us now," his voice was barely above a whisper. "We've got to stop that thing."

I slowly nodded my head. "It's what he would have wanted," I agreed.

As we circled back over the island, it didn't take long before we laid eyes on the grey skinned mountain.

"Can you shoot?" Bruce smirked as he gestured to the joy stick in front of me.

"Can I shoot," I snickered as I grabbed hold of the lever. "Can Han Solo fly?"

Bruce shook his head, obviously unimpressed by my Star Wars refrence and kept his attention focused ahead of us. "Then let's see you put your money where your mouth is."

We flew in closer and I held my breath, letting my finger slide over the trigger. I glanced over at Bruce, who glanced back at me, and as he nodded his head I let my finger press the red button. Within a matter of seconds, I unloaded an entire magazine on the beast but it only seemed to be pissing him off.

"Not bad kid, but how bout you try actually shooting at him?"

Suddenly, searing hot lasers shot out of the monsters eyes. They were like two uncontrolled beams of energy, and they were directed at us.

"How bout you just shut the fuck up and focus on getting us the hell out of here!" I yelled back.

As Bruce hammered down on the steering column, I was smacked with a feeling of dejavu.

"Bruce, it's Kryptonian!" I yelled in realization.

"Master Wayne," Alfred's British accent resounded throughout the cockpit. "I think Miss Montgomery is right," he confirmed.

"So if that thing is Kryptonian, than only a Kryptonite weapon can kill it," Bruce thought out loud.

"It might," I shot Bruce a dirty look. "If you had any left."

"What about the spear, Master Wayne?"

"The spear, Alfred!" Bruce exclaimed excitedly. "It's 100% pure Kryptonite. If I can penetrate the skin, the spear will kill it!"

"In theory, yes-" Alfred had his reservations. "But I think there's one problem you seem to be over looking."

"What's that?" I asked.

"The spear is back in Gotham."

I swung my legs over the edge and dropped the last few feet to the ground. Seconds later, the Bat Plane tore off with the hulking monster roaring right behind him. I ducked down as chunks from the already deteriorating ceiling came crashing down around me.

"Rose?"

I spun around. "Lois, what are you doing here?"

"Oh, my god, Rose," Lois breathed while throwing her tiny arms around me. "I was so worried about you! Clark told me what happened," she explained. "Lex kidnapped you and Batman almost killed Clark. It's a good thing I arrived when I did-"

"Yeah, I'm really grateful for that," I cut her off as I drug my hands through my hair. I tried to hide my frustration at her incessant rambling, but right now I just didn't have the time for this.

"Look, I don't know if you've seen what's going on out there, but Bruce sent me here to find a spear."

The building quaked yet again, and I suddenly found myself rushing to one of the crumbled outer walls to get a better look at what was happening. My heart raced in my chest and I found myself crying out at the sight of Bruce's plane crashing to the ground. I could see the bright red glow sparking inside the hideous blob again and my breath hitched as the beams of energy shot out of it's ugly head.

"What the-- who's that?"

My eyes followed Lois' gaze to the scantily clad woman who had suddenly placed herself between the beast and Bruce. At the last possible moment, the woman threw her arms up in front of her and somehow the blasts deflected off her bracelets.

"I'm not sure," I answered truthfully, "but if we make it out of here alive, remind me to thank her."

The creature roared, gearing up to release another shock wave when out of no where a red and blue blur whizzed past.

"Clark."

His name was barely more than a whisper on my lips, but I could feel the smile grow across my face as a sense of hope filled me.

"Lois, the spear!"

"I-- I," she stuttered as she turned to look at me.

"Lois, c'mon!"

"I threw it in to the water right here." Lois pointed to a hole in the floor as she pulled me towards it. "I thought it was the right thing to do," she added as I sent her a look of disbelief.

I pulled off my socks and shoes, while cursing Lois under my breath. How one woman could be so dumb, I would never understand.

"What- what are you doing?" she asked.

"Isn't it obvious?" I rolled my eyes in response.

Taking a deep breath, I stepped up to the edge and dove in. The cold water was like a shock to my system and as I frantically swam around in the darkness, I had no idea how I was going to find this thing. I swam up to the surface and took another deep breath before diving back in. As my eyes adjusted a second time, I nearly sighed with relief when I saw the faint green glow of the spear.

I gasped for air as I came up to the surface, tossing the spear and grabbing Lois' outstretched hand. I was nearly out of the water when suddenly my hand slipped from her grasp. I fell back into the cold darkness but when I tried to come back up to the top, I realized the way had been blocked by large chunks of debris.

"Rose!" I could hear Lois' muffled screams as she tried to dislodge the wreckage. "Rose!"

My vision was growing hazy and my lungs ached for air. I pushed as Lois shoved, but I didn't know how much longer I could keep this up. The burning sensation in my chest was growing unbearable and water poured down my throat through my mouth and nose. I think the reflex not to breathe was almost just as painful as the lack of oxygen itself and just when I thought I couldn't take any more, I found myself being pulled up and into an incredibly strong pair of arms.

"Oh Rosie, my Rosie," Clark cooed as he rocked me back and forth in his arms. "I though I was never going to see you again."

I snuggled into his warmth as he wrapped his big arms around me, but I knew that this feeling of comfort would be very short lived. There was a war raging on around us, and as Clark's eyes traveled towards the spear, there was no doubt in my mind that I knew what he was already thinking.

"Clark, you can't," I told him as he easily hauled the both of us to our feet.

"I love you."

"Please, Clark. No-"

He slowly made his way over to where the spear laid. "This is my world," he said as bent down to pick it up. "You-- are my world."

I faltered backwards, tears free falling down my cheeks as I watched him fly straight towards the monster. Clark struck the creature through the chest, but Doomsday refused to go down that easy and with a howl of pain, the beast stabbed at Clark with a jagged shard of bone. My heart cried out as I watched Clark pull himself closer, his agonizing cry piercing the night as he did so. With a final shout, Clark drove the spear further into the heart of the monster and with a shrill and painfully loud wail, the beast collapsed to the ground.

I ran.

I ran as fast as I could, tripping and stumbling over my own two feet. A quick glance at the Amazonian woman's face confirmed my suspicions, but this couldn't be it. This couldn't be the end.

Ignoring the pain, I dropped to my knees, pulling the heavy torso of Clark's body into my lap. The man had survived a nuclear warhead, but this-- this thing is what would bring him down? I couldn't believe that. I wouldn't believe that.

"You can't leave me, Clark. Remember?" I gushed. "Nobody walks out, ever."

I cradled his head closer to my own. A waterfall of my tears cascading on to his cheeks.

"Please, Clark. Don't leave me," I whispered. "You can't leave me," I insisted. "Not now-- not like this."

I burried my face into the crook of his neck. Sob after sob racking my body as I held hm. By now Bruce, Lois and the other woman had gathered around me, but I didn't care.

"You can't leave me!" I screamed as realization of the truth sunk in. "You can't! You're going to be a daddy."
