Book Two: Chapter 1- The Repercussion
Batman vs. Superman-
I was laying on the cold metal table in the Kryptonian ship, strapped down again, just like I was the day they announced I was pregnant. The door slid open and I expected to see Faora-Ul coming toward me, but it wasn't her who haunted my dreams- it was him.
It was always him.
"How about a magic trick?" he asked as he appeared next to me.
A slight glint off the blade in his hand flashed into my eyes as he spoke.
"I'm going to make this baby- disappear!"
As he laid one hand on top of my protruding stomach, a ridiculous sounding laughter escaped his lips. With a swift flick of his wrist, he had sliced open my abdomen- a blood curdling scream exploding out of my chest. Pulling me by the hair, the Joker pulled my head towards him as he cooed into my ear.
"There, there," he shushed as he patted my head.
"Get off of me!" I yelled as I ripped my face away from him. "You're not real."
"Oh, but I am, Rosie dear!" he taunted. "Scars and all."
He gripped my face between his fingers as he forced me to look back at him.
"Sweet, innocent, little Rose," he murmured while running a finger along my chin. "Do you really think Arkham can hold me forever?" he asked.
As he attempted to toy with my mind, he'd gotten his finger a little too close to my mouth. Leaning forward, I did the only thing I could think of and snapped at one of his fingers. Warm metallic blood rushed into my mouth as I bit down, causing the Joker to cry out.
"You little bitch," he slapped me across the face as I released his finger. "You've got some fight in there, don't you," he chuckled. "I like that."
"Then you're going to love me!"
The deep booming voice of Clark awoke me from my dream. I abruptly sat up in the bed, my night clothes sticking to my back as a cold sweat completely covered my body. I turned to my right, but not surprisingly Clark wasn't there. Another woman, a jealous woman maybe, might have been worried that her boyfriend was out entertaining another mistress. If only that were actually the case, then maybe I'd have some relief.
Pushing myself up and out of the bed, I wobbled slightly on unsteady legs as I padded my way over to the bathroom. I splashed some cold water onto my face before looking up into the mirror. With cheeks sunken in and hollow eyes, I barely recognized the woman staring back at me anymore.
It had been eighteen months since Clark's epic battle with Zod, and eighteen months since I'd lost our baby. A repercussion that was inevitable, really-- bound to happen. A human just isn't meant to be slammed through that many walls. Unfortunately not a day went by that I didn't beat myself up over it, and somehow, in my sick and demented head, the Joker had even managed to nab credit for that as well.
I walked back out of the bathroom and over to my nightstand as I pulled the sweat soaked shirt over my head. As I replaced it with a dry one, I could hear Clark quietly open and close the front door. I assumed he most have sensed I was awake when I heard his foot steps rush towards the bedroom. He cautiously entered and eyed my harried appearance before quickly closing the distance between us.
"What happened?" he asked as he pulled me into his arms. "Why are you awake?"
I hesitated for a moment as I thought up a lie to tell him, but the second he saw the wet shirt in my hands he knew.
"It was the nightmare again, wasn't it?" he demanded.
I sheepishly nodded as he hung his head and I regretted ever telling him about them in the first place. Before, when they were about my parents, he knew there was nothing he could do. But these ones, these new nightmares he felt were partly because of him.
I shuddered as a cool breeze floated through the open window and wrapped around my body, the action didn't go unnoticed by Clark.
"C'mon," he gently urged as he pulled me into the bed. "I promise I won't leave you again tonight."
I snuggled into the safety of his warm, heavily muscled arms as he pulled the sheets up and over us. As I laid on my side in the crook of his arm, he drew long strokes across my back.
"I'm sorry, Rose."
His whisper was muffled as she spoke into my hair.
"I'm so sorry," he croaked again.
My eyes fluttered close as I selfishly chose to ignore him. Grief and guilt slowly ate away at the both of us and I feared it was eating away at our love too.
***
The next morning, Clark and I rushed out of our apartment late for work. Shortly after the destruction of Metropolis, Clark had decided to take a job at the Daily Planet as well. At first it was nice, always having him close by, but lately I've just been feeling suffocated.
We trudged silently along on our way to work. Neither of us had said anything to the other all morning. I wanted to believe it was because we had both been too busy getting ready, but deep down, I knew that wasn't the truth.
I paused in our walk just outside the Starbucks- luckily for me it just happened to be right next to the Daily Planet.
"I'm going to run in and grab some coffee," I told him. "Do you want anything?" I asked.
"Rose, we're already late," he frowned.
"Exactly," I replied. "So what's five more minutes?"
Seeing that I would not be dissuade, Clark stepped forward and grabbed both of my hands. "How about I go get your venti triple shot mocha Frappuccino and you head on up to work."
I was about to open my mouth in protest when he suddenly captured my lips in a kiss. The passion in his public display caused a blush to creep up my cheeks and right there I decided that maybe suffocating love wasn't so bad afterall.
"I don't enjoy watching Perry yell at you," he whispered when we finally pulled away. "And besides that, I'm faster," he winked.
I shook my head with a laugh as I watched him disappear and made my way into the Daily Planet. No sooner had I stepped off the elevator, Perry was screaming my name. I swear he had some sort of spidey-sense thing going on.
"Montgomery!" he yelled. "My office, now!"
I winced at the tone in his voice, but for the life of me, I couldn't think of anything I had done to piss him off lately. As I walked in, I let out a small sigh in relief at the sight of Lois.
"Nice of you to join us today, Montgomery," he scolded as I sat down. "I was just explaining to Lois here, how against my better judgement, I'm sending the two of you into a terrorist cell in Nairobi," he informed us. "Now, I don't know why, but for some reason the General of the al-Shabaab militia has agreed to an interview with the two of you," he said. "You'll be granted access deep inside hostile territory and it will be extremely dangerous. I need to here from the two of you, right now, that this is something you want to do."
As Lois glanced over at me, I could see by the look in her eye that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I only had to nod my head once at her before she turned back to Perry and agreed.
"Good," he said as he threw two tickets down on the desk in front of us. "Cause I already booked you're flight."
***
"Can we just talk about this for a minute?" Clark begged as he slammed my empty suitcase shut for the third time.
"What's there to talk about?" I challenged. "I was given an assignment by Perry and I'm going. End of discussion."
I huffed in frustration as I turned to dump the stack of clothes from my arms into my suitcase but found that it was closed again.
"You're not going," he spoke sternly. "I won't let you."
He narrowed his eyes at me just as I looked up at him in disbelief. As he crossed his arms over his massive chest, a smug smile rested on his face. In the blink of an eye, he had managed to put away all the clothes I had set out and I could feel my entire body flush with anger as I stared at him.
"Would you stop doing that?" I screamed.
"Not until you promise me you won't go," he replied. "And trust me when I say, I can keep this up all night long."
"Yeah, until somebody needs your help." I scoffed.
"And what's that supposed to mean?" he asked angrily raising a brow.
"You know exactly what it means."
"Is that why you're doing this?" he accused. "To get back at me or something?"
"Back at you for what?"
He rolled his eyes before huffing at me in annoyance. "I'm not stupid Rose," he said. "I know you blame me for losing the baby."
"What?" I practically screeched at him in response. "How could you think that?"
"Because it's the truth," he stated flatly. "I should have known Zod would come after you- I should have been able to keep you safe- but I couldn't and now it's my fault-."
"Clark, listen to me,"I interrupted, placing a hand on either side of his face. "Zod was a mad man- a monster- and I'm lucky to be alive at all. The only reason I'm alive- the only reason I'm standing right here- breathing today is because of you."
After that, Clark let me leave for Africa without another word of protest. But as I currently found my self jostling around in the back of a morbidly hot mini van, I was beginning to wonder if for once in my life I actually should have listened to him. As the vehicle came to a screeching halt, Jimmy Olsen, the new photojournalist and I were ushered out and the fabric from around our heads was ripped off. I grimaced as my eyes attempted to adjust to the brightness before cursing Lois under my breath for getting sick and bailing on me.
I was dragged over to a small table and chairs before being introduced to the General of the militia. As I sat down, I pulled out my journal and pen and looked up at the man sitting before me.
"Are you a terrorist, General?" I asked, cutting quickly to the chase.
"They said you were a feisty one, Miss Montgomery," he chuckled. "But no. What I am, is a man with nothing except love for my people."
"Who's paying for these security contractors, General? Who pays for the drones that passed over our heads last night? One question leads to another-"
Suddenly there was a loud commotion behind me as the General's men started accusing Jimmy of being CIA. I was grabbed harshly by the arms and forced down onto my knees- I could feel the barrel of a gun being pressed into the back of my skull.
"No, no, no!" Jimmy yelled. "Not her. We just used her credentials as cover," he explained.
There was a moment of silence before they shot Jimmy in the head and I grew slightly dizzy when his blood splattered across my face. As I was dragged into a dark room and tossed to the dirt floor, my breath was forced out of my lungs by the sudden impact.
"You have to believe me," I began as I looked up at the general. "I didn't know-"
The sound of heavy gun fire instantly cut me off and as I looked around, I couldn't help but feel like this was a set up. I whispered for Clark not to come but a second later as the sky above us sounded with an atomic boom I knew he had ignored me. Fear radiated off of the General's body as the infamous figure clad in red and blue came crashing down through the roof.
Clark took a step forward but stopped when I felt the cold metal of the General's gun against my temple. "Take one more step, and you will see the inside of her pretty head," he taunted.
As Clark's hands balled into fists and his face distorted in anger, I wondered if the General was really this stupid or if he'd just never heard of Superman before. With bated breath, my arms slowly lowered to my sides and in that second, Clark and the General disappeared through the now gaping hole behind me. Moments later I found myself wrapped up in Clark's incredibly strong arms as we flew over the ocean back to Metropolis.
He leaned in for a kiss but I violently pushed him away. "I told you not to come," I hissed.
"And I told you not to go," he angrily shot back. "What was I supposed to do? Just sit back and watch?"
"I had it handled," I insisted as I crossed my arms over my chest.
Clark tried to hold in a laugh as we both knew that wasn't true but he decided it was better not to argue.
"Of course you did," he chuckled as he leaned in again for a kiss.
This time I didn't push him away.
