Chapter 2
As I stepped into my first period, I breathed a sigh of relief. Nobody stared at me as I walked in, and nobody whispered about me when they think I couldn't hear. I have ears like a bat.
I think I'm safe.
"Hey, Charlotte!" Amy said with a smile as I slid down in my seat across from her.
"Hi, Amy," I said with a sigh.
I had texted Amy about what had happened, but I left out the lesbian part. The way Caroline reacted is the way anybody in their right mind would. I'm a weirdo.
"I'm sorry about the other girls," Amy told me, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Things will get better. And you can always talk to me."
"Alright, everyone, take your seats," Mr. Parker said as we all sat down. "We have a new student coming into our class in just a few minutes, so I'd like you all to be very nice, okay?"
Mr. Parker is a great teacher, but he bores the entire class with his constant talking. Sometimes I look forward to first period, but other times I dread it because of Mr. Parker's long lectures about easy Spanish sayings that we've already learned.
"Oh, there she is now," Mr. Parker said as he opened the classroom door. As soon as he did, my heart fell to the floor.
I felt like Romeo when he first saw Juliet.
"Did my heart love til now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty til this night."
"What?" Amy asked, snapping me back to reality.
"Did I say that... out loud?" I gulped.
Amy giggled. "Yeah. You quoted Romeo. What's gotten into you? You hate that play."
I sighed. "I'll tell you later." My eyes darted back to the beautiful girl.
She had long brown hair and a gorgeous smile. She was tall and thin. As she walked over to our table, her hips swayed. I couldn't believe how pretty she was.
"Hey, guys. I'm supposed to sit at your table," the girl said with a grin. "My name is Amanda."
"Hey, Amanda, I'm Amy," Amy said with a smile.
"Hi, Amanda," Lucas said with a wink. "You can call me happy to see you."
Amanda rolled her eyes and smiled. "Sorry, you're not exactly my type." As she sat down, she looked at me expectantly.
I blushed for being late. "I'm Charlotte."
Amanda's brown eyes met mine. "Nice to meet you, Charlotte," she said in a beautiful voice with a sweet smile. My face turned a darker shade of red. I couldn't stop smiling.
Caroline? Forgotten. Just like Rosaline from Romeo and Juliet.
Oh God, we'd better not end up like them!
"So, do you like Mr. Parker?" Amanda asked with a grin. "Don't worry, I won't tell."
"He's boring." Lucas said with a sigh. Then, he smirked. "A lot less boring than you, babe."
Amanda giggled. "I already told you, you're not my type."
"How do I become your type?" Lucas asked.
Amanda shrugged. "It's impossible."
"Mr. Parker at least teaches us the material," I cut in. "But he's a little boring at times."
Amanda looked at me and nodded with a shy smile. "Yeah."
"Where are you from?" Amy asked.
"Gotham City," Amanda replied without a smile.
There was silence at the table before Amanda started laughing.
"It was a joke, guys," Amanda said with a grin.
"Sorry, we don't get your nerdy jokes." Lucas said, rolling his eyes. "Is that your type?"
"That was really funny," I said with a laugh. Amy smiled, but she didn't get the reference. Me? Being the freak I am, I've loved Batman since I was just seven years old.
"I know, it really was," Lucas said. "I'm the funniest guy alive."
"Wow," Amanda said with a grin. "You are so full of yourself."
"I'd be even more full of myself if you decided to go on a date with me," Lucas told Amanda with a grin. My eyes widened. "Friday night. I'll pick you up. What do you say?"
"Uh, are you even old enough to drive?" Amanda asked. She laughed. "Doesn't matter. I'm going to have to say no."
"Aw, come on!" Lucas said loudly, slamming his fists on the desk. "That would've been rad!"
"I'm a lesbian, okay?" Amanda said with a sigh. "There. I said it."
Instantly, my mouth drops open. I couldn't believe my luck! Not that she would go for me.
Amanda laughed at our expressions. "Surprised?" she asked. "I was, too. But I found out when all my friends liked guys and I liked girls."
"That's really brave of you to say," I said quietly. "Must take a lot of courage."
Amanda smiled at me and nodded. "Yeah, it really did."
"I'm going to have to ask you to be quiet over there," Mr. Parker said. "I'm trying to teach."
"Sorry, Mr. Parker," Amanda said politely, but my mind was completely elsewhere.
The girl I like is a lesbian!
She's an angel. Her eyes are brighter than the sun. Her hair is long, wavy, and silky. Her smile is happy, and when I look at her, I see genuine happiness.
Maybe I'm not a freak. This girl sure isn't, and she's a lesbian, just like me!
Maybe I don't have to live in the shadows forever!
Maybe, someday, I can come out.
