Chapter 3: The Billion Dollar Boss

The inside of the apartment was not to disappoint. Large floor to ceiling windows covered one side of the wall, giving me a breathtaking view of the tall buildings in New York. The living room was small but cosy, with a cream coloured couch facing directly at the window, elegant lamps were placed at various tables, and a dining table for six were placed next to the living room. The kitchen was very modern and comfortable to work in, with large bench tops and a mirror backdrop behind the stoves. I squealed in happiness, as cooking and baking was one of my favourite things to do to pass time. My stomach grumbled loudly at the thought of eating, and I decided to explore the rest of the apartment later, after I feed the hungry monster that's called my stomach.

I opened the fridge, surprised to see it all stocked with the necessities, and a note from Felicity telling me that she had stocked my fridge. That girl is an angel and I've never even met her once. I quickly pulled out all the ingredients for mac and cheese, deciding to treat myself for making it to New York. I added a bit a pumpkin and bacon in it and voilà! I sat down on my new dining table, sighing at the savoury mac and cheese in my mouth, and the beautiful night view of New York City.

My phone pinged as a notification came through. It was mum. Hey darling, hope you are settling in well over there, please give me and your dad a FaceTime call as soon as possible! We want to know if you are alright! We miss you lots. It read. Tears filled my eyes as I felt a wave of homesickness hit me. It's the first time I've been this far away form my parents, and who knows how long I will be staying here for. I quickly typed back a reply, telling them that I will call first thigh tomorrow morning and show them around. I wiped away the remaining moisture from my eyes as another message pinged through.

(1) New message from Douchebag

I sighed dramatically. What did he want now? I clicked open the message, tears once again filling my eyes, but this time, it wasn't because of homesickness.

C'mon Lexi, I never meant to cheat on you, there were no emotional feelings between Cassie and I, and I always loved you, I swear. I made a huge mistake, I'm so sorry, please call me. It said. I angrily slammed down my phone. That little fuck boy, how does he even have the nerve to lie to me about this? Is he trying to say here that he never meant to cheat on me with my best friend for more than half a year? That is the most amount of bullshit I've ever heard in my entire life in one sentence.

All appetite for the Mac and cheese is lost, and I packed up the remaining leftovers before placing them in the fridge. I closed down my cellphone, headed into the spacious bathroom for a shower, before jumping in bed, hoping to sleep off the mood James has created in me. With the soothing lights lightly blinking at me, I fell into a deep slumber.

I stared nervously at my reflection. I was dressed in a white blouse which is tucked into my knee length tube skirt, a navy blazer to go over the top, and white pumps. I tied my dark hair into a neat high ponytail, gave my eyelashes some light swipes of mascara, and applied some MAC matte lipstick on my lips. I hate wearing too much makeup, and for the sake of it being my first day, I decided that a little makeup wouldn't hurt. I grabbed my purse and looked at the time.

6:30 am.

Perfect. I checked out the building where I will be working at yesterday, and found out that it was only two blocks from where I lived. I checked all the stove tops before I left, rushing out the door, wanting to get to the office with plenty of time to spare. I made my way down the two blocks, my hands shaking slightly from nerves. At this hour in the morning, plenty of people were rushing around, talking speedily into their cell phones, all dressed similar to me.

I stopped in front of a building with two glass spinning doors, and floor to ceiling glass walls. There are already many people sitting inside the couches that were nearly completely empty yesterday. I took a deep breath, and walked in through the glass door.

The atmosphere inside the building hit me at once. Hushed speaking was heard in the background, and the open space in the lobby made me gulp in nervousness. If I trip up here, it would be in front of everyone's eyes. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot. I counted the steps in my head, willing myself to not trip. I finally made it to the front desk, and a blonde lady with a kind smile looked up at me.

"Hi, I am Mr Steel's new secretary, and I am looking for... Felicity." I recounted. The blonde lady perked up immediately.

"Alexis Lee?" I nodded. "I'm Felicity. Nice to meet you." She held out her hand. My eyes fell on to her name tag, and I blushed in embarrassment. Nice job, Alexis. Felicity dialled a number on the phone quickly, before speaking into it. "Maddie, please come down to front desk, I need you to take over for me. Thank you." She put down the phone, grabbed a file, before circling out of the large desk. "Come on, follow me. I'll show you around." She led me towards the elevator, and pressed going up.

"You don't have a car, do you?" She asked. I shook my head no. I don't really need to drive here seeing as I live so close. "Good. Then I don't have to show you the basement." We stepped into the elevator. "Now, every morning you have to get here by 7am, and sign in with me. If there are any issues and you can't come, just give me a call before hand and I'll talk to the big boss about it." I nodded again. She pressed level 7. "I'll just show you all the levels that you need to know. First we are going to the break room, which is somewhere you will be going frequently to make Mr Steel coffee. He likes his coffee black, with one sugar, and no milk." I took out a small notepad from my bag and wrote it all down.

Felicity looked at me, impressed. "You know, you are the first secretary for Mr Steel that I have worked with came prepared with a notepad. Every other secretaries constantly ask me about the easiest and smallest things in the first few weeks." I blushed, and accepted her compliment graciously. We made small talk along the way, when Felicity wasn't telling me how things worked around here. I found out that my office was on the top floor, right outside Mr Steel's office. The top floor only had my office, Mr Steel's, and a large meeting room. The large windows on the top floor gave me breath taking views.

After the tour was finished, we went back downstairs to make Mr Steel's coffee. I carefully prepared it under Felicity's strict instructions, and she ushered me into the elevator with only words of encouragement and telling me to meet her for lunch later. The elevator door closed on her grinning face, and I rode the elevator alone up to the top floor. When the door pinged open, I realised how eerily quiet it was up here. I took a careful step out, my heels making a loud clack on the floor. My heart started beating and my stomach tightened in nervousness. Please don't take a dump Lexi, please don't. I told myself, because apparently when you get nervous and stressed, you will also feel the urge to take a dump. Ugh, that is so gross Alexis.

I walked up to Mr Steel's door, the realisation dawning on me that I don't even know how he looks like. Hopefully he is really, really ugly. So I won't become all flustered and shy every time I see him. My hands tightened my grip on the coffee, scared that it will slip my sweaty hands. I lifted up a shaky hand to knock, but the door was pulled open the second my knuckle touched the door. My eyes came face to face with someone's tie. Tight fitted suit, hints of muscle bulging is evident, my eyes traveled up to his neck, up to his angular jaw, and up to his stormy eyes.

My jaw fell open, and my grip slackened on the coffee cup, and Mr Steel's hand shot out and snatched it before it fell on the floor and gave us both first degree burn. "Are you done staring? I can hear your obnoxiously loud breathing all the way in my office." He snapped, his eyes cold.

"You bumped into me at the airport." I blurted out. His eyes changed into one of confusion, before recognition took over.

"Oh. It's you." He sneered. "I didn't bump into you, you are the one who wasn't looking like a headless fly"

"Geez, can you say that anymore nicely? I can almost feel the sunshine and rainbows radiate off you." I said sarcastically, crossing my arms.

Surprise flashed through his eyes quickly, before is disappeared. Ha, bet you he hasn't had anyone standing up to him. "What are you doing here?" He mimicked me, leaning against the door frame.

"I am your new secretary. Alexis Lee." I held out a hand for him to shake, but he pointedly ignored it.

"You are my new secretary? I don't want you." He said, going back into his office. I stuck my foot in between the door, right before he closed it fully, and barged in.

"You don't want me? Well that's too bad because you hired me!" I said incredulously. What is he, five? How on the earth did he become a CEO?

"Technically, I didn't hire you. My useless friend did. If I had known that he hired you, I never would've agreed."

Ok, I admit, that did sting. But this guy is a jackass. "Well Mr Steel, you should've taken the liberty of finding who I am before I came to work. And your friend hired me because I am competent. I am fit for this job."

"Too bad, I don't wa-" He began, but I cut him off.

"You have a 10 o'clock waiting outside at the moment, would you like me to send him in, sir?" I asked with false sweetness.

"Yes, but I want to see you in here afterwards." He growled, displeased at being cut off.

"After this you have another client to meet, two meetings, lunch with your parents, and three more meetings with potential clients. Unfortunately your day is already filled up." I read off the notes Felicity had prepared for me, hiding a smile at his ever growing frustration at every thing I list off.

"Have dinner with me."

Wait, what? "Sorry sir, but that is after work hours."

"Did my friend not tell you that I can request you to work extra hours?" He said arrogantly.

"Yes, but request not accepted." I said hotly.

"Come to dinner with me or you are fired."

That asshole! "Fine." I mumbled. Douchebag.

"What did you say?" He asked smugly.

"I said, fine. What time do I meet you?" I glared up at him.

"I will pick you up at 7 in your apartment. Dress nicely. Preferably in red satin." He purred.

"Why red?"

"Because, red will look sexy on you." He smirked.

I gasped in outrage. "I'm sorry sir, but I think that is hardly appropriate for work." When I saw his mouth begin to open to say something more, I quickly added, "Your 10 o'clock is already waiting outside sir, I am going to send him in." With that, I ran from the room, letting Mr Steel's client through the door, before sitting down in mine with my heart racing a million miles per minute.

This is going to be a interesting dinner.
